** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98-RCUSB, Sat Dec 19 from 1548 UT tune-in via
Pardinho SP Brasil KiwiSDR, LRA36 has made a surprise appearance after
supposedly closing down for the summer a sesquimonth ago. Tbx tip on
the WOR iog at 1406 UT:

``Manuel Méndez Lugo, Spain
LRA 36 on air, heard via SDR Kiwi remote receivers in South America

ANTARCTICA, 15476 USB, LRA 36, Radio Nacional Arcángel San Gabriel
Base Esperanza, 1352-1405, 19-12, pop song in English, 1401
identification "LRA 36, Radio Nacional Arcángel San Gabriel", Spanish,
female, comments, songs in Spanish.

Thank you very much to Hugo López from Santiago de Chile, to alert me
via whatsapp about this transmission.``

As I start listening to the S5-S6 signal, it`s a mess, seems like two
different audio sources mixing equally, music + music or music + talk.
If they are going to do that, should be on separate sidebands, but as
usual there is no LSB, so both are on USB. Various comments include at
1550, ``feliz navidad``; 1551 ``Nacional Antártida Argentina``; 1556
LRA 36 ID; timesignal! at 1600+ about 15 seconds late, including
internet delay. Surely that is not generated at Base Esperanza, rather
Bs. As. More IDs and Antarctica mentions interspersed, including
reference to the original Wed 11-13 local time broadcast. But
1621*-*1623 cut off the air. When resumed the noise level at the SDR
is higher; 1626 more or less as originally; 1628 ID in passing.

At 1636 I try other Brasil SDRs: Brasília is full, but Rio is axually
getting this better with less local noise than SP. But about 1640*
signal lost and can`t find it again on any of them.

Meanwhile, further info about this had arrived from MM at 1415:

``"Adrian Korol retwitteó --- CE3 BBC, Hugo, Santiago de Chile,
Sudamérica @CE3BBC --- ANTARTIDA - LRA36 Sábado 19 de diciembre 2020
Emisión especial de LRA 36 Radio Nacional Arcángel San Gabriel, desde
Base Esperanza. Bienvenida al equipo 2021. 15476 Khz. en modo USB -
14:00 A 17:30UTC. Informes de recepción a:
esperanzalra36@radionacional.gov.ar
11:40 p. m. · 18 dic. 2020·Twitter Web App"

According with this tweet, the today transmission is the first with
the 2021 Base Esperanza team`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ERITREA [non]. 17545V, Sat Dec 19 at 1535, presumed Bayto Yaikl is
VP S7-S9, but with BFO can tell the frequency is cycling up and down
as usual. At one point I catch it on 17545.060. This is Wed & Sat
only. Registered by RMI broker in HFCC as Issoudun, FRANCE site, but
this strange behaviour brings that into question. A previous inquiry
to Jeff White got no answer as to the correct transmitter site.

Wolfgang Bueschel also heard it today and speculates that it`s really
renting an old Soviet-era Kostinbrod, Bulgaria unit. Ivo Ivanov ought
to be able to discern whether it`s his local transmitter, e.g. by
hearing a second harmonic on groundwave, which would be 35090VV. The
same applies to the next RMI transmission after 1600 daily on 15285V,
R. Manara International which I previously caught wobbling likewise;
and maybe to the next2 one, 1700 on 13660, Alameda Bible Fellowship,
per NDXC on Mon & Fri only --- need to check whether that one vary the
same way. HFCC shows that on days 135, meaning Sun/Tue/Thu, but surely
a mistake for 246 = Mon/Wed/Fri. The latter two second harmonix would
be 30570VV, 27320VV.

Kai Ludwig speculates it could be Issoudun but via old Pori, Finland
transmitter moved in; no specific ISS info in the past decade (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 13565-CW, Dec 19 at 1452, HIFER beacon K6FRC, weak but
clearly readable, nothing but the call over and over. This may seem
routine, but not if it`s really 1.8 milliwatts as claimed, from
Patterson, California; only rarely audible and solely around this time
of day, so standard inquiry whether it`s *always* on air as beacons
should be, despite the kWh expense. Also standard: where are all the
other beacons listed in the 13550-13570 ISM band? I used to hear ~half
a dozen of them, but not any more (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [non]. 15460, Sat Dec 19 at 1454, African language, S9/+10,
the SSOB except for WRMI and RHC, surely the extracontinental SSOB,
but what? HFCC shows USAGM via VATICAN in Kin[yarwanda] on Sat/Sun
only. Then some African music until cut off at 1500*; but wait, there
is still/now a much weaker JBA signal on 15460. HFCC shows from 1500
it`s USAGM switched to BOTSWANA in Hausa daily. Aoki/NDXC shows both
as VOA (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

newsy subjects. VG reception, other frequencies unchecked (Glenn

** U S A. 9395, Fri Dec 18 at 2307, WRMI playing classical organ music
- Encore? NO, 2310 it`s Bob Biermann on `Truth 2 Ponder` saying he is
taking a break from politix, but goes on to proselytize here like he
does on `YWS`, lamenting how secular so much music and Xmas
programming has become, e.g. depressing movies on Hallmark channel
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 5800, UT Sat Dec 19 at 0259, WRMI with some dead air, then
Zanotti ID JIP, 0300 that bouncy World Music fill, Greek? So Encore is
not getting the usual unpublicized (except by me) prepeat --- oh2, yes
it is, 0302 cut to JIP Magic Flute Overture, and the rest of that
excellent classical hour; as I am listening via Missouri SDR which is
getting it at S9+20/30 despite off the back of SSE antenna (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. Area 51/61 webcast, UT Sat Dec 19 at 0100, WTO starting
AAAWWW on WBCQ. This is what should be on SW 6160v, but not checked;
Allan says on 7490 & 6160 tonight, ``we hope``. Nostalgia of VU meters
they have rather than LED displays; Angela seem to think she is
*supposed* to peak ``in the red``, which explains why she is
constantly shouting and overmodulating, distorting. Apparently she
sees red as a political statement! A spirited discussion/argument
follows the rest of the hour, and Allan also has to raise his voice
too high just to overcome her. She wonders why one monitor radio is on
``7489``? Allan explains that it`s an old Kenwood which drifts --- but
says nothing about WBCQ transmitters drifting. As a ``man of
science``, Allan declares, ``take the vaccine`` while Angela objects
--- China must have something to do with it as with the virus
itself.

At 0120 the Area 51/61 webcast of AAAWWW is suddenly interrupted by a
rapid retuning-sound across the dial, screech, switch to some music
fill, and a song repeating the F-word. I go to the WBCQ 7490 webcast
and find AAAWWW is still running there; I wonder if the same
divergence happened on SW? At 0122 a caller interrupts, Bill in Ohio
who says he has already got vaccinated, but they dispose of him
quickly.

At 0131 I recheck A51/61 webcast and just starting is ``2001, a Jane
Odyssey, welcome September 8`` --- so it appears that Larry Will,
controller of A51/61, had enough of the Wieners and decided to dump
out of their show, at least on his webcast.

Now on (7490) webcast, they are lamenting increasing ChiCom influence
in the US, etc., etc. 0145 datestamp as ``18th of December, YOOL
2020``, and assures us there will be an Xmas show too. 0147 to e-mail
starting with the new Free Radio Weekly, extracting a few frequencies
and pirate stations reported. AHW again advocates their dumping SSB
and using AM only. And so it goes to closing prayer by 0159, some
music fill and eventually Hal Turner starts, bragging about how many
countries he allegedly reaches via WBCQ & WRMI - I wonder if he knows
he`s been moved from 9455 to 5950, which BTW is much stronger than //
6160v. Axually, any full-power SW signal can reach *every* country in
the world at one time or another, no big deal. Whether there be any
significant listeners in any of them is quite another matter.

At 0219 I try to measure 7490v, but no signal direct to here! 6160
comes out as 6159.931 --- at least it`s quite stable. Now with Hal
Turner, but at 0254 recheck, music is playing. At 0342 I try
Alexandria SDR in SAM, which now displays 6160.0 minus 78 to 80 Hz.

I still want to measure where ``7490`` is tonight, so try Warrenton MO
SDR in SAM mode -- arrives there sufficiently at S7, but Hz offset on
that Kiwi is stuck at -3.7, even when I tune or jump to other
frequencies; not to be believed. At 0344, Alexandria is working as
7490.00 plus 170 to 172 Hz, now in TOMBS not // music on 6160- (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

QSLing, not a station staffer. Original report as also copied to him:

** U S A. 1150, Nov 8 at 0736 UT, besides KSAL Salina KS, I am hearing
Sousa march music, must be the scheduled DX test from KSEN Shelby,
Montana. Yes, 0737 very slow Morse Code MCW IDs: VVV DE KSEN, with
call repeated so many times I lose count. 0739 sweep tones; 0740 I
switch from the DX-398 with internal antenna only somewhat nulling
KSAL, to the R75 with E-W longwire where KSAL is more solid, but still
hearing underneath, KSEN now with continuous tone. 0742,
phone-off-the-hook pulse sounds. So that`s it. As I said, unheard 24
hours earlier, and it turns out that test was deficient at low power.
Tonight it`s widely heard from coast to coast at least. Shelby is near
Cut Bank, on I-15, only some 35 miles south of Alberta (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

Joe, Tnx for the QSL - a nice design. Added to my gallery:

** CANADA. 335-MCW kHz, Dec 18 at 0731, dash and YLD, 1000-watt NDB at
Chapleau, Ontario; would rather hear YUT in Repulse Bay, Nunavut
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) See also USA [and non]

** CANADA. 990, Dec 18 at 1451 UT, discussion of vaccine distribution
delays in Ontario, with Canuckcent, obviously CBW Winnipeg MB, nice to
hear this long after sunrise, but shortly fading out. At night it all
depends on how much auroral there be, whether this or XET dominate, or
something between like KWAM Memphis (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NIGERIA. 7255-, Dec 17 at 0727, no signal from the extremely
unreliable VON; maybe switched to 9690- instead? There is a JBA
carrier and nothing else scheduled, but unseems mandatory offset minus
as to be expected (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ROMANIA [and non]. 7345, Dec 17 at 0721, something in German is
getting jammed, adding up to S9; yes, soon 0723 ID RRI as scheduled.
The Cuban jamming is slightly excessive because of DRM Radio Martí
only until 0200 with a negligible audience in Cuba. When will innocent
bystations ever learn to avoid any frequency ever jammed by Cuba, past
or present, any time of day? Or employ diplomatic pressure against
Cuba; but those Commies have no respect for Romanian ex-Commies (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 428-MCW kHz, Dec 18 at 0725 UT, NDB POH, which is 25 watts
from Pocahontas, Arkansas. Not always audible, but this is the top
frequency for such in the conterminous (an Alaskan on 429). I have
searched three websites for why it`s named Pocahontas with no
explanations, but presumably inspired by that Virgindian (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. 332-MCW kHz, Dec 18 at 0732 UT, again trying to
unravel the NDB pileup here. In addition to IC, Wichita KS, another
one at almost same period which means they are meshing. I copy it as
NIS, but nonesuch listed; closest is FIS, Key West FL - Fish Hook.
Maybe ..-. for F is losing the first two dits or overlain with the I
of IC, making the first letter sound like an N instead of an F? All
this under stronger dash and what I copy as YT, which is also
confusing as there is no YT listed, rather YTE in Nunavut, also XT and
VT Canadians in BC and SK, but should really be QT in Thunder Bay ON
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

WOR 2065 confirmed UT Friday December 18 on WRMIs: 5850 VG S9+20/30
here; 5010 VP S5-S7 here, fair at Brasília SDR (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** U S A. 5950, Dec 18 at 1803 UT, JBA carrier from WRMI which runs 24
hours here. At low noon around the midpoint, I thought it might be
readable if one cared to listen to BS; since the upgrade and change to
355 azimuth, it does hold up better post-sunrise and pre-sunset, and
is even usable at night unlike before, tough luck for Ethiopia, et al.
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 1210, Dec 18 at 1443 UT, more than hour after sunrise here,
keeps referring to Huron - not the lake but the city in South Dakota:
ad for The Daily Plainsman newspaper --- oooh, I`m a Plainsman as an
EHS grad; show is `The Morning Mess`. Not sure of last word, as in a
meal? It`s KOKK, one of a local group at
https://www.performance-radio.com/
--- and is there a plainsman old program schedule? Of course not! Is
U4 5000/870 watts; day pattern favors SE, night pattern NW. Official
sunrise in Dec & Jan is 1400 UT. This is dominating on my E-W longwire
rather than KGYN Guymon OK almost due west, still at 1453 (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 1050-, Dec 18 at 1447 UT, obits sponsored by multi-city
funeral home, Pipestone and Sioux Falls SD; AC 507 ads. It`s KLOH
Pipestone MN, U4 9380/432 watts - how`s that for precision? Pipestone
is in the SW corner of MN, so not far from the much larger SxF SD. Day
pattern sports equal lobes to NNE and SW, favoring SxF and us, even on
my E-W longwire. At 1455, a LAH - low audible het appears to be caused
by this one about 15 Hz low beating against one or both OK 1050
groundwavers. However, mwoffsets put it on the plus side:
``1050.0097 USA KLOH (Pipestone, MN) 2019-08-07``
and only one station more than minus 10:
``1049.9798 USA WLIP (Kenosha, WI) [range: -1049.9995] 2019-08-07``
There is also a heavy 248/minute = 4.13 Hz SAH.
The OKies are not listed, but here`s a nearie plus 3.6 Hz:
``1050.0036 USA KSIS (Sedalia, MO) 2018-01-23``
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 12174.7-USB, Dec 18 at 1526, JBA 2-way in colloquial

** FRANCE. 17545V, Wed Dec 16 at 1541, JBA music, no doubt clandestine
for Eritrea, Bayto Yaikl, on apparent twice-weekly emission Wed & Sat.
As always, frequency offset+plus and wobbling, attributed to an
Issoudun transmitter. I try to measure it, cycling somewhere between
17545.050 and 17545.065. Surely same ISS transmitter is used elsewhere
than just this 30+30 minutes per week, but I have seen no other
reports of such behaviour.

Guess what: a few minutes later, bandscanning the 19mb, I encounter
another fluttery JBA carrier behaving exactly the same way! Circa
15285V, or 15285.052 at one point. HFCC shows them both, and BTW, both
brokered by RMI:

``17545 1500 1600 48 ISS 150 120 0
227 1234567 251020 270321 D 17400 Mul F RMI TDF

227 1234567 251020 270321 D 17400 Mul F RMI TDF 377``

We already know that the first half of the 15-16 hour is no longer in
use, nor any of it the other days of week, but what languages of the
Multitude? 15285 is not in EiBi, but in Aoki:
``15285 1600-1700 F Radio Manara International Hausa Issoudun 1-7``/

As for 17545, this time EiBi and Aoki agree it`s ``TIG/Tig``, so is
that Tigre or Tigrinya?
``17545 1530-1559 We,Sa CLA Bayto Yiakl TIG ERI /F
17545 1530-1600 F Voice of Yiakl/Bayto Tig Issoudun 7 [= Sat only]``

EiBi readme.txt clarifies?:
``TGR Tigre/Tigré/Tigrawit: Eritrea (1m) [tig]
TIG Tigrinya/Tigray: Ethiopia (4m), Eritrea (3m) [tir]``
Apparently we have two distinct dialects if not languages, but note
the confusion as to how they are spelt, abbr`d in Roman/English.

I`ll bet the waterfalls of both are snaky. I expect there are further
instances of this off-frequency/wobbling transmitter before and after
1530/1700. I wish others would pay more attention to such clues.
KiwiSDRs with `SAM` capability display frequency offsets numerically
and their variations. Even invisibly, they are easy to observe by ear
and by precise frequency readouts to the Hz, with the right receiver
such as my R75, which should be employed to its fullest capabilities.
I further wish that our references would specify individual
transmitters by number at each site; especially HFCC. Or even their
*true* powers. Dream on (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NIGERIA [non]. See FRANCE

** SPAIN. 9690 > 11940 > 12030 > 11685, Wed Dec 16 at 2313 quick
check, all four frequencies of REE English in expected decreasing
signal strength and quality via TWR Bonaire SDR, as Alison Hughes is
narrating something (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 5960, Dec 16 at 2314, VOT English, good via Bonaire I have
up, another Wednesday so another hopeful check for `Letterbox` to be
revived: NO; `Review of Foreign Press` in progress, nothing but a few
headlines but wide-ranging; the same old COVID-19 PSA of basic advice
--- but hey, it may save a few lives. Can we think of any other SW
station, even American, which does so on a continuing basis?? 2320,
`Today in History` for December 16, then nothing but music and some
IDs. Their letter box must be overflowing by now, or maybe the lack of
response is killing listener contact (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. Holiday Specials on WUOT Knoxville TN, my
ex-station:

https://www.wuot.org/holiday-specials-wuot

Already underway. Times are EST = UT -5. A good selexion. Remember
when I used to round up many more such pages? I`m sure lots of other
webcasting public radio stations continue doing that. Check home pages
for linx.

Unfortunately, I was reminded to check this with news of the shooter
killed outside the Cathedral of St John the [allegedly] Divine in NYC
at an Xmas concert. I hope it was not the annual Paul Winter Solstice
celebration, which on WUOT will be broad/webcast UT Tue Dec 22 at 0000
--- but however live they may sound, these are typically from the
previous year with plenty of post-produxion. Maybe the real thing was
tonight [UT Dec 14] in advance. Plenty of social-distancing available
in there, I suppose, but how is the central air circulation?

Later research: no, it was a `Christmas carol` concert and
you-know-what prevents a new Solstice concert this year, from the
COSJT[A]D calendar:

``Friday, December 18 --- Paul Winter’s 41st Annual Winter Solstice
Celebration 7 PM --- While we're unable to host the Winter Solstice
performance in the Cathedral this year, the celebration will continue
online! Visit solsticecelebration.com for more information...``

Well, that website goes nowhere with or without www. NPR admits that
this year`s broadcast is really from last year, which they would have
been doing anyway; question is, what year will play in 2021?

https://www.npr.org/2020/12/01/936249895/the-paul-winter-consorts-annual-winter-solstice-celebration

This explains how to purchase online access to this year`s concert:
https://paulwinter.com/event/winter-solstice-2020/
I didn`t realize they also do Summer Solstice concerts, maybe not
widely broadcast.

NOTE: Alan Roe has compiled and is updating a calendar of Holiday
broadcasts on SW starting Dec 19, notably BBC, but also US stations
and various German relays. This is being posted to the WOR iog and
other major SWL sites (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) See also USA: WBCQ

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2064 monitoring: confirmed Wednesday December

Also confirmed Wed Dec 16 at 2300 on WRMI 9955, S9/+10 into Bonaire
SDR, but Cuban pulse jamming gaining as WRMI fades gradually, S7-S9
total by 2312. Next:

0100 UT Thursday WRMI 7780 to NE

NEW WORLD OF RADIO 2065 should be ready for download and first SW

** U S A. 6159.93v, replies to my report about anomalies on this
WBCQ:

``Hi Glenn, I monitored 6160 last night [UT Wed Dec 16] on and off. It
was on with Area 61 by 0040 UT. At 0200 Hal Turner Show was on. Then
at 0300 there was an hour of rock music (maybe the show called Rock
Wave); Just music, no announcements. From 0400 to 0600 was Late Nite
in the Heartland. Peter W Hansen``

``Checked 6160 just before 0500 UT December 16, WBCQ with a very poor
signal into Houston. Readable on peaks, but overall unlistenable.
CFRX 6070 does better with its 1 kW here. Stephen Luce, Houston,
Texas``

Also note that Jean Shepherd shows on `Area 61` old-time-radio block
starting nominally at 0000 UT havr Xmas-themed episodes from exact
same local dates in the `60s and `70s, at least on UT Dec 18 and 19.
Keep an eye on the weekly Area 61 previews without exact timings in
2-hour blox, at http://zappahead.net/#area61 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 5985, Dec 16 at 0717, open carrier at S9/+10. Nothing
scheduled but unless something totally out of left-field, most likely
WRMI which is really here until 0600; altho this signal is a lot
stronger than normally into OK off the side of the 222-degree beam.

WRMI skedgrid shows 5985 as XMTR #2 at 0330-0600 only, the only one on
a 222-degree antenna, for Central America. EiBi and Aoki agree that is
its total timespan, but not all of it is 7 dpw. HFCC too at 0300-0600,
but also imaginary entries at 05-07 for CRI Arabic via defunct
Albania; a hole at 07-08; and 08-13 1 kW in English from RRI BIA[k?],
Indonesia. It seems the numerous wooden entries for RRI long-gone
regionals default to language English, which is ludicrous! (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

take about a month for them to seem newish (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA. 6900, Dec 15 at 2328, JBA talk seems Chinese, yet S9+25
including noise level. Probably CNR1 jammer against one Sound of Hope
frequency; another carrier on another such, 6865; and not // algo on
6970, maybe the pirate relaying a North Carolina FM station (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6000, Dec 15 at 2324, RHC is S9+35 but JBM; OTOH, 5990, CRI
relay in English, is S9+40 and sufficiently modulated, even
splattering. Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

pirate clip on the monthly but broadcast weekly Radio Emma Toc via
WRMI (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 6159.93, Dec 16 at 0022, no signal from this WBCQ, while
7490 is audible VP. Area 61 was supposed to start at 0000, and per
http://zappahead.net/#2020-1214-area61
it would have been the Jean Shepherd show of exactly 55 years ago.
Maybe running on webcast, inconvenient to check now; seems this
transmitter is sporadic. Not rechecked until 0232 when it is on with
VP music, `God Bless America`. By now it should be amid `Amateur Radio
Roundtable` on sked UT Wed at 0130-0330. And no Hal Turner after 0200
like other weeknights. Still does not include the other talkshow after
0400, reconfirmed at 0530 check via KB0FX remote; nor WOR changed from
0400 Mon to 2300 Sun (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

on at 0430 for tune-out. Is no one paying attention at Lebanon?
Meanwhile, 5085 WTWW-2 had a modulating gospel huxter at 0342+ instead
of rock show (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
