Logs
** CANADA. 940, Jan 21 at 0804 UT, Canadian sports news but not // 990
CBW so not CBM: oops, CBM is long gone anyway, now CFNV Montreal;
instead from Canadian Press, 0805 negative weather and ``It`s all you
need, GX 94``, i.e. CJGX Yorkton SK, U2 50/10 kW but CP for U1
50000/690 watts pwr NRC AM Log. Night pattern supposedly mostly NNW
with deep notch thisaway, day pattern broadly NE/SW with no notches
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA [and non]. 338 MCW kHz, Jan 21 at 0730 UT, TU, 30-watt ND
beacon in TUlsa with CCI from another, must be RYN, 400 watts from
Tucson / RYaN, AZ as sometimes heard solely (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 379 MCW kHz, Jan 21 at 0731 UT, DL, 50-watt ND beacon at
DuLuth MN. RU = really RUE, 25 watts in RUssElville AR is also on 379
and often heard, but one or the other rather than mixing (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2278 monitoring: confirmed UT
Tuesday January 21 at 0330 on WRMI 7780, S9/+10 into S Texas SDR.

Also confirmed Tuesday January 21 at 1400 on WRMI 9955, JBA direct; as
usual, music right up to 1400 with no ID break. No jamming audible.

Also confirmed Tuesday January 21 at 1506 the 1500 on WRMI 9955, JBA
direct. No jamming audible.

Also confirmed Tuesday January 21 at 2100 on IRRS SW via AM Italia,
1322.998 kHz, poorly audible into UTwente across Europe. Next:

0030 UT Wednesday WRMI 9395 to NNW;
0030 UT Wednesday SW Radio, Germany 3975;
2030 UT Wednesday SW Radio, Germany 3975;
2200 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW;
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S;
1730 UT Thursday SW Radio, Germany 3975.

Thanks this week for a generous contribution from Doug Brown, London
ON and Seminole FL, a check in US funds to Glenn Hauser, P O Box 1684,
Enid OK 73702.

One may also contribute via PayPal in US funds but not necessarily, to
woradio at yahoo.com (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. Re 9475v WRMI spur from 9395: At 0343 Jan 21, Jeff White
asked, ``Is it better now?`` My reply:

``Jeff, Did not see this until 0426 = yes, no 9475 spur heard, but
9395 has faded to much weaker than when first reported, so not really
comparable. I`ll keep checking periodically. Glenn``

Next check at 0724 Jan 21: no 9475 spur while 9395 with SMTV is S7/S9.
At same time 9955 undermodulated hymn also S7/S9. 9395 normally
stronger here aimed thisaway unlike 9955 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 1190, Jan 21 at 0755 UT, EWTN TV promo, and mention of
catholicradionetwork.com - so must be KDMR Kansas City MO, U2
5000/500. KDMR is in fact the HQ of CRN at same address. Radio-locator
map confirms site is on MO side, direxional night pattern with a notch
to SSW but we are more like SW. Why? There are no KS, OK, TX or even
XE stations to protect in that direxion. What could DMR stand for?
Divina Maria Regina? Keep Devoted to Mary the Queen? Despite the
grandiose name, CRN exists in only 3 states, MO, KS and CO, mostly FM
stations but the other AMs are 1090 & 1100 in MO, 1360 in KS, 970,
1120 & 1060 in CO (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 1330, Jan 21 at 0752 UT tune-across, ``95.7 WRAM``. First
thought it were WRAL, but WRAM Monmouth IL is a match in NRC AM Log,
with W239DB on 95.7. U4, allegedly 50 watts at night, 1000 day power,
really? Monmouth is in NW IL between Galesburg and Burlington IA.
Incredibly there are two other 1330s in N IL: Evanston and Rockford
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Tuesday, January 21 2025

Logs
** BRAZIL. 6010.1, Jan 20 at 0651, JBA carrier from R. Inconfidência,
new frequency; had been offset minus more like 6009.9, but confirming
now plus as reported this week by Carlos Gonçalves, Portugal (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** COLOMBIA. 10125 CW, Jan 20 at 0648, HK3QQ still doing its thing,
looping defective letters in keyboard order starting with QWETYUIOX...
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 9565, Jan 20 at 0645, pulse jamming against nothing, as R.
Martí operates at 2100-0100 only, per EiBi. One might also hear
different noise on 9565 at 0200-0300, irregular TDFrance DRM.

Follow-up to yesterday`s The Other Side:

``Biden Takes Raul Castro's Bait
'Governments and international organizations must realize that
negotiating with dictatorships is not a path to peace and stability'.
Carolina Barrero Madrid 20 Ene 2025 - 13:50 CET
Repressive forces in Havana in January 2025. [caption]

The Biden Administration has fallen for a trap. Like the proverbial
genie from the lamp, it has granted three wishes to dictator Raúl
Castro in exchange for the release of 553 prisoners (it is not yet
clear how many of these are political prisoners) in his last week in
the White House.

Thus, these prisoners have been conditionally released, which means
that at any time during the remainder of their sentences they could be
put back in prison, if the authorities so decide, such that they
remain prisoners at the mercy of the dictatorship's plans...
https://diariodecuba.com/cuba/1737377428_59460.html

Well, trying to get political prisoners released is not exactly
``vile``. You`re welcome (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA [and non]. 24945 USB & 24948 USB, Jan 20 at 2150, CO2XN
uttering nothing but fonetik call over and over and over and over
several times per minute, evidently trying to get a contact with some
DX on nearby frequency. Also lots of QRM pileups, something on
24946.5, but nothing audible around 24940.

CO2XN does not make it into DX heat/cluster, but lots of stations were
chasing KH7AL/KH9 - or vice versa. QRZ.com: ``KH7AL/KH9 Hawaii flag
Hawaii, Allen C Le Vie, 1915 Harvest Loop, East Helena, MT 59635, USA
--- I will operate as KH7AL/KH9 while on Wake Island during my days
off from work there (end of 2024 and into 2025). I welcome working
many DX from this prime spot in the Pacific``.

But the station I heard: ``CO2XN Cuba flag Cuba, Jose (JOE) Carlos
Caballero Garcia, Santa Rosa # 223 Altos e/ Infanta y Cruz del Padre,
Mcpio Cerro. Ciudad Habana 10600, Cuba`` with lots of photos on his
qrz.com page. It`s fortunate that a police state denizen can still
reach the outside world via ham radio (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 11529.895 approx., Jan 21 at 0008, JBA carrier,
signature offset of pirate Hikari FM (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2278 monitoring: Also confirmed Sunday
January 19 at 2000 on IRRS SW via AM Italia, 1322.999- kHz, S9 but
noisy into UTwente across Europe.

Also confirmed Sunday January 19 at 2249 the 2230 on SW Radio,
Germany, 3975.003-, S8/S9 into UTwente

Also confirmed Sunday January 19 at 2330 on WRMI 7570, VP S6/S8 into
Maryland SDR, AND WRMI 7780, S9 into same; at 2354 into S Texas SDR,
7570 S9+5/10 and 7780 S9/+15.

Also confirmed UT Monday January 20 at 0053 the 0030 WRMI 7780, JBA
direct.

Not confirmed UT Monday January 20 at 0200 on GCR1 feed to many
enumerated affiliates, rather still last week`s 2277. See:
http://globalcommunityradio.blogspot.com/p/blog-page_30.html

Also confirmed UT Monday January 20 at 0230 on WRN North America
feed.

Also confirmed UT Monday January 20 at 0400 on Area 51 webcast only,
immediately after some F-bombs. Standard disclaimer.

Also confirmed Monday January 20 at 2030 on SW Radio, Germany, 3975,
VP S9 on recommended Bedford UK SDR; S5/S7 but better into Sligo; and
no good into UTwente. Next:

0330 UT Tuesday WRMI 7780 to SW;
1400 UT Tuesday WRMI 9955 to SSE [also web-, phonecast; jammed?];
1500 UT Tuesday WRMI 9955 to SSE [also web-, phonecast; jammed?];
2100 UT Tuesday IRRS 1323-Italy;
0030 UT Wednesday WRMI 9395 to NNW;
0030 UT Wednesday SW Radio, Germany 3975;
2030 UT Wednesday SW Radio, Germany 3975;
2200 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW;
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S;

** U S A. 7570, Jan 20 at 0645, this WRMI still on with old pop tune,
presumably `Legends`; but at 0644, WRMI 9395 is OFF; 9955 is ON but
JBA (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. I notify WRMI at 0020 UT Jan 21: ``Jeff, 9395 is putting out
an extremely distorted spur again, this time peaking around 9475 +/- 5
kHz. Unreadable but modulation spike peaks match 9395 {not 9455}.
Before and after 0000 UT Jan 20 into 21. This could be a problem for
WTWW when it resumes 9475. Glenn`` -- Jeff replies: ``Thanks. I have
notified engineering.`` George McClintock says it`s even worse at his
location.

Also: 9455, Jan 20 at 2357, multi-lingual IDs from RAE, WRMI-11 relay
of Argentina. S9+30/40 direct, slightly stronger than S9+20/25 9395
WRMI-6 closing BB`s Ancient Word Radio, presumably `Truth 2 Ponder`.

At 0000 UT Jan 21, 9455 goes to TOMBS, while 9395 and spur go to
15-min ham show with ARRL news, presumably `CQ Calling` which is not
scheduled anyWRMI on this day and time.

System E grid claims 9455 with TOMBS before 0000, not after. System G
grid imagines 9395 with WRN, what? before 0000 and Viva Miami after
0000.

Also: 9955, Jan 21 at 0005, WRMI-3 is S9+20 but Just Barely Modulated,
seems like Japanese. System C grid shows RAE in Portuguese, but the
separate grid for RAE only, shows RAE Portuguese before 0000 on 7570 &
9955, and RAE Japanese after 0000 but on 9455. Contradixion after
contradixion (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VANUATU. 9960, Jan 20 at 0647, JBA presumed R. Vanuatu, for the
record (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

{correxion: this should have been headed VATICAN; NOT ``VATICAN
[non]``}

** VATICAN. 15565, Jan 17 at 1530, Vatican Radio signing on in
Amharic, mentioning Facebook etc., S9+5/15 the SSOB exceeding 15770
WRMI, and very little else on almost vacant band. I assumed this would
be via MADAGASCAR, coincidentally aimed thisaway, but HFCC, EiBi and
Aoki all show this and all 15565 VR broadcasts are direct from SMG. Of
course, we have long suspected something strange with their own
antenna, no suppression of back-radiation, or even reversed azimuth!
15565 continues until 1830 with azimuth adjustments depending on
language, 135 degrees to SE for Amharic, i.e. 315 degrees NW backwards
USward (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 7782-7828 approx., Jan 20 at 2354, loud multi-carrier,
multi-tones over this wide range of about 46 kHz, neatly avoiding,
anyway, 7780 WRMI and 7850 CHU. Peaks approx. 7795 at S9+25. WHAT is
this? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Loggings from the first few days in Masset, BC  View Printable Version
Monday, January 20 2025

Logs
I'm spending 10 days here in Masset. Usually, most of the time is spent
repairing, replacing, and upgrading the set up I have here. Still, I've
had some time to enjoy the fruits of my labour. Propagation started quite
good when I arrived on Thursday, but today (Sunday), has really gone
downhill. Even so, I'm listening to UK's TalkSport on 1089 which is
equal in strength to Seattle's KPTR on 1090...and 1485 from Svalbard with
only 1 kW, is once again booming in like a local playing macho man! Got
to love this hobby! In any case, here are a few of my logs from the past
3 days. 73, Walt

ASCENSION ISLAND 7285, 0555-, BBCWS Jan 19 Several frequencies available
during this hour. 7285 is fair/good, // to another Ascension transmitter,
9410 (good/very good) 125 kW/27 deg. Both with a rumble audible. Also //
17690 via UAE Dhabayya with 250 kW/215 deg, at excellent level. (Salmaniw,
Masset, BC)

BOTSWANA 9775, 0300-, VOA Jan 19 Excellent reception in English via
Botswana, and // to 4930 (good) also from Botswana with 100 kW/20 deg, and
6080 (fair) also from Botswana with 100 kW/350 deg. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

BOTSWANA 15580, 0545-, VOA Jan 19 Excellent level with English VOA
programming. VOA from Botswana is always a good performer into Masset,
even though it's over 16,000 km away!. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

ECUADOR 6050, 0419-0500, HCJB Jan 19 Spanich music programming, not
sounding at all religous. Gave me a good opportunity to test all of my
antennas, and best heard on the new 110 deg 600' Beverage antenna. Fair to
sometimes good reception. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

EGYPT 9890, 1910-, Radio Cairo Jan 18 Supposed to have their Russian
service here. Instead, just a strong open carrier without even a hint of
modulation!. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

GERMANY 1705, 1705-, Channel 292 Jan 18 Encore classical music program
would be perfectly well heard except for super-strong CRI Hausa on 9665
(500 kW/283 deg via Kunming). Have to use SAU to avoid splatter.
(Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

GERMANY 13590, 1908-, VOA Jan 18 Good reception with an English modern
music show, complete with DJ. VOA ID at 19:09. Targetting central Africa.
(Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

GERMANY 15460, 1730-, AWR Jan 18 Very strong reception. Carrier on at
17:28 in listed Afaan Oromoo (?huh?). Began with piano and an expression
repeated over and over. Interesting that on Sunday, there was a crash
start about 30 seconds late, with AWR IDs in English. Again, very strong.
Nice to hear AWR from more than 1 transmitter site again!. (Salmaniw,
Masset, BC)

IRAN 11880, 1920-, Voice of the Islamic Republic of Iran Jan 18 A good S7
carrier, suddenly on at 19:20 but with zero modulation. I guess they're
copying Cairo now! Listed to South Africa, and confirmed lack of
modulation using a South African SDR. Supposed to be in English.
(Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

OMAN 12095, 1709-, BBCWS Jan 19 Superb reception with a sports play by
play. Sigh!. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

ROMANIA 7325, 0124-, Radio Romania International Jan 19 Very good level in
English to ECNA. Romania for years now, is the station to emulate.
Interesting programs with superb technical parameters. May they exist for
many more years!. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

ROMANIA 9510, 0400-, Radio Romania International Jan 19 English to WCNA at
excellent level. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

ROMANIA 9720, 1704-, Radio Romania International Jan 18 100% copy noted
with French language. Not propagating very well the next morning, however.
(Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

TAIWAN (NON) 9790, 1712-, Radio Taiwan International Jan 18 Very good
reception using the transmitting services from Sofia, Bulgaria. Russian
language programming. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

TAJIKISTAN 7245, 0247-, Voice of Tajik Jan 19 Good reception in presumed
Tajik and every bit as strong compared to a Novosibirsk SDR. Minor ham
QRM. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

THAILAND 6080, 1713-, VOA Jan 18 English programming at very good level
from Thailand. // 17895 excellent (Botswana with 100 kW/350 deg), and
11850 good to very good (Kuwait with 100 kW/210 degrees). Plenty of good
frequencies to choose from!. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

UNITED ARAB EMIRATES 11785, 1621-, World Radio Network Vsemirnaya Radio Jan
19 Superb S9+40 signal strength with Russian (not from Russia)
programming. Rechecking at 16:40, it was from Radio Slovakia
International. At 16:58, WRN announcement in Russian, concluding the
program and mentioning the correct times and frequency. (Salmaniw, Masset,
BC)

UNITED KINGDOM 9535, 0600-, Radio Ndarason International Jan 19 While
waiting for VOA on 9550, I noticed a crash start on 9535, at good to very
good level, mentioning Ghana, and Mali, in presumed Kanuri. By the way,
9550 didn't come on until 06:03 (VOA English from Botswana). (Salmaniw,
Masset, BC)

USA 9955, 0100-, World of Radio Jan 19 Glenn's own program at good to very
good level into Masset, even though transmitting in the opposite
direction!. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

UZBEKISTAN 6035, 0119-, BBCWS Jan 19 Fair reception via Tashkent, with much
better // from Oman on 7410 (250 kW/63 deg) at good to very good level.
(Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

VIETNAM 9730, 1715-, Voice of Vietnam Jan 18 Very strong reception in
Vietnamese. Seems to be spot on channel, unlike in past years where the
transmitters were always off-channel. Also heard the following day at
16:30 in Russian with an S9+20 signal. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

VIETNAM 11885, 1900-, Voice of Vietnam Jan 18 English programming at good
level. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

Logs
** CHINA. 11590, Sun Jan 19 at 1550, chanting in Chinese, S9+20/25 //
slightly stronger S9+20/30 on 11670. Both CNR1 jammers against RFA in
Chinese: per Eibi at 1500-1600 Sat/Sun only on 11590 via Kuwait; while
11670 is via Tinang, Philippines, daily at 1500-1600. Only jammers
audible here, not victims (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

``Biden's Actions Spark Outrage, But Not Surprise --- President Joe
Biden did not squander his last chance to bolster Cuba’s totalitarian
mafia state.
Juan Antonio Blanco, Miami 15 Ene 2025 - 19:40 CET

President Joe Biden did not squander his last chance to bolster Cuba’s
totalitarian mafia state. Flouting the opinions of members of both
U.S. parties and the communities of Cuban and Venezuelan exiles, he
once again pressured the leaders of various security agencies to
implement his decision.

It is always "possible to do more," as Fidel Castro liked to say.
Indeed, it is always possible to stoop lower: the US president struck
Cuba from the list of State Supporters of Terrorism, and adopted other
last-minute, highly sensitive measures, in collusion with the regime
in Havana, and carried out in the dark a premeditated and malicious
manner.

After this outrageous decision - not only undermining the interests of
Cubans, but of Americans themselves - it is hard to imagine what else
the magician in the White House might pull out of his time-worn hat
before he stepping off the stage for good.

Why is this decision indescribably vile?...``

as sked at 1530 on WRMI-3. Could not make out any voice announcement
at end, 1600 into TOMBS. Transmitter skedgrid claims #3 at 1600-1700
with TOMBS on 9955 Saturday only, but this is Sunday. System E sked
shows 9955 `weekends only` at 1500-1600, not after 1600. System B sked
shows 9955 with WRN Sundays only at 1600, cut to internet only at
1630: just more self-contradixions by WRMI (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 9330, Jan 19 at 1553, no signal direct from WLCR on WBCQ;
what`s wrong? Also zilch into UTwente at 1627, Maryland SDR at 1628.
Back on by 1937 check (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VATICAN. 15565, Jan 19 at 1544, VR in Amharic, once again with
incredibly strong signal, S9+20/30 supposedly aimed oppositely. Only
other comparable sig on band is 15150 WMLK, the SSOBs. If anything in
Europe were aiming for N America it should be even bigger, but how
about simulsigs from Europe aimed anywhere on 19m?

13830, Jan 19 at 1546, //15565 in Amharic, almost as strong, S9+15/25
direct and the only significant extracontinental signal on this band.
But 13830 switches to Madagascar relay at 1600 for Swahili (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 11529.9, Jan 19 at 1547, S6 JBA music, probably from
Hikari FM, NAm pirate, and seems to be another signal near 11530, such
as Dengê Gel or Turkish jammer (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNSOLICITED TESTIMONIALS

Hello Glenn, I wanted to express my gratitude towards your work on
World of Radio. This is not the first time I have donated to you, but
in these times when stations and transmitter centers close down for
good, I feel that you keep this DXing community informed. I truly hope
you are able (and willing) to continue in 2025, and maybe, by some
game of destiny, you can reach WOR #3000. Thanks for all the effort,
and I wish you the best. I hope you have enjoyed the holiday season.
Much appreciated, Moises Corilloclla, Rego Park, NY
