Glenn Hauser logs August 20, 2022  View Printable Version
Saturday, August 20 2022

Logs
** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98 RCUSB, Aug 20 from 1445 past 1530, no signal
from LRA36 into Argentine remote this Saturday. At first I was camping
on Gary Pence, and briefly sometime before 1500 heard some music, but
he may have switched to a different frequency. Still nothing at 1809
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** EAST TURKISTAN. 11775, Aug 20 at 1810-1840+, very nice Chinese
traditional instrumental music nonstop on CRI via Kashgar, standard
accusation, scheduled as German 18-20 UT, but one of the languages
they can`t be bothered to utter anymore; VG S9/+20 into Canary SDR I
am rechecking for Nigeria 11770 but which gets nothing but splatter
from this. Continues past 1900 without a break or any announcement
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** GREECE [non]. 5130-, UT Sat Aug 20 at 0238-0300, `Greek Music
Refuge` as programmed by Zach Liangas and presented by U. Bill Tilford
on WBCQ Radio Angela, S9/+10 but noisy into Maryland SDR; would have
been better on a higher band such as 9420 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NIGERIA. 7254.936, Aug 20 at 0626, Voice of Nigeria is back! I have
been checking for it every night after 0600 so am sure this is the
first date reactivated. S9+10/20 undermodulated in presumed Hausa on
signature skewed frequency.

My last previous observation: ``7254.9v, July 12 at 0635, NO signal
from VON nor has there been for several weeks, checked almost every
night after 0600; nor have I seen any other reports about this, nor
other possible frequencies 9690-, 11770-, 15120 being heard at any
hours.``

Before then it had been sporadic: you never knew whether it would be
on after 0600 or not. I had not logged it assiduously so unsure when
it last appeared. Originally had three transmitters, but two of them
already collapsed.

7255- would sometimes be on before 0600 with musical prélude and neat
drumming IS. Nominal sked was 0600-1100 including English 0800-1000;
and 2000-2100 per Aoki. 15120 might also appear evenings in DRM.

11770- was also previously scheduled at 1500-2100 including English at
1630-1900, but Aug 20 at 1620, none of it into Canary Islands SDR,
just JBA on-frequency from presumed PBS Xinjiang, Urumqi, East
Turkistan, land of imperialist ChiCom genocide against Uyghurs and
other Moslems (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6933 USB, Aug 20 at 0126, heavy jazz/guitar S9, 0128
ID overdone that I can`t understand, ``--- Radio``, more past 0136.
These say it`s Thunder Chicken Radio, at 2341 moved up from 6930 USB
as in previous report:
https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,100843.0.html
Never heard any SSTV beepery while I was retuned (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6960 AM, August 20 at 0127, soft rock S9/+10 but
undermod compared to 6933 USB station; then, ``I wanna hold your
hand``. 0129 SFX and Ballsmacker Radio ID: still on a reliable Friday
night schedule? Many more logs here:
https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,100854.0.html
Seems the keyword for song titles was ``hold`` (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** UKRAINE [non]. (7730), catching up with `Ukraine: Security Issue`
from archive rather than UR1 relay by WRMI at 0500: Aug 18, day 176:
http://ukr.radio/images/ckeditor/files/files/ENG_NEWS_18_08_22.mp3
Including: Trainloads of heavy Russian weapons. Shrapnel dangerous for
civilians, not just missiles themselves. Russians even deliberately
injure themselves in order to avoid fighting, be evacuated. Russians
confiscating cars. Zap. power plant situation increasingly tense.
Claim Ukrainians are making provocations. Turkish pres. visiting
Ukraine, inspecting grain exportation. Risk of radiation leak at
plant.

Aug 19, day 177:
http://ukr.radio/images/ckeditor/files/files/ENG_NEWS_19_08_22.mp3
Including: Kharkiv suffers most losses since beginning. Russia used $ 3
million missile to destroy dormitory of hearing-impaired people, no
military targets nearby. Is only 15 km from Russian frontline. Donbas
settlements destroyed every day, but have not been able to capture
entire Donbas. Russians aim exclusively at civilian targets as in
several cities. R stepping up nuclear blackmail. Mig31s deployed in
Kaliningrad with hypersonic missiles threatening Poland and Lithuania
neighbors (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2051 monitoring: ``5850 UNITED
STATES WRMI 1033, Just after BBC newscast (on 9410), a tardy tune-in
to World of Radio, but confirming the px is running on schedule, with
Glenn reporting halfway thru that Italy has chosen 9/11 as date to cut
off MW broadcasts in the country. Heard very good to excellent with
Grundig Satellit 205 and indoor short wire. NOTE: px followed up by
good ID by M ann, then one of those Overcomer broadcasts with someone
playing piano over a bunch of moaning and groaning -- Very Good Aug.
17 [Wed] Rick Barton-AZ``

WORLD OF RADIO 2052 monitoring: confirmed UT Sat August 20 at 0400 on

** U S A. (7489.9), UT Sat Aug 20 at 0000, WBCQ webcast of `AAAWWW`,
starts right off with ``look up`` to see how insignificant humans are
in light of the Webbscope -- *another* repeat, 4th? time, of the
mid-July show; never mind. Then why did AW plug this earlier today
with a twit giving the phone number as if it would be new? (Glenn

Here it is:
https://www.w4uvh.net/KQKD1380QSL_220115.pdf
Or #134 via:
http://www.worldofradio.com/QSL.html

Somehow my original report of this is missing from the Roundup for
that week, so here it is now:

1380, Jan 15 at 0601-0641 UT, monitoring the MW DX test from
KQKD, 1380, Redfield SD. My report to CPC for eQSL:

Thanks for the test! First time I`ve heard KQKD, which is about 580
miles north of me in Enid OK.

I heard the VVV DE KQKD IDs immediately at 0601 UT January 15. I then
recorded 0605-0636 UT and later went thru the file to pick out two
areas with VVV VVV VVV DE KQKD KQKD KQKD - several times. Most of the
rest of the time if anything could be heard, it was sweep tones
upward, or solid tones. The recorder timing may not be too accurate,
but should be correct within 1 or 2 minutes.

Solid tones: 0611, 0612, 0616, 0627
Sweeps upward: 0613, 0625, 0629, 0631, 0635
Siren - varying tone: 0615

The first clip of Vs and IDs at about 0611; second clip about 0623.
One must listen closely but I am sure I copied ``KQKD`` several
times.

https://www.w4uvh.net/KQKDDX1.mp3
https://www.w4uvh.net/KQKDDX2.mp3

This was on my Icom R75, which runs off an east-west 100-foot
longwire, not well positioned for north/south reception. On MW I turn
off the preamps to avoid overload. Dominant station among lots of QRM
was Mexican music, probably KMUS Sperry/Tulsa OK, some 110 miles east
of here, 250 watts at night.

I also heard this on my DX-398 receiver with internal antenna only,
sweeps at 0607 UT. This allowed local 1390 KCRC Enid to be somewhat
nulled. In both cases tuned on LSB to minimize KCRC.

FYI, I did not employ any remote SDR at any time for this test.

Some background info about KQKD would also be of interest, such as
what the call letters may signify, either by original choice or
subsequent slogan formation. Looking forward to an eQSL. Thanks, and
73, (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VANUATU. 11835, Aug 20 at 0632, R. Vanuatu reconfirmed as still
AWOL. BTW, Ron Howard`s sesquiminute clip of it appears at the end of
WOR 2152 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Glenn Hauser logs August 19, 2022  View Printable Version
Saturday, August 20 2022

Logs
** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98 RC USB, Aug 19 at 1515-1615, no signal of
LRA36 into LU4AA remote in Argentina; checking just in case Friday
substitute for Wednesday debacle. Less seriously, I mistyped as LR4AA
in last report (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA. 335 MCW kHz, Aug 19 at 0650, dash and YLD, 1000 watt ND
beacon at Chapleau, Ontario, which is between Sault Ste-Marie and
Timmins. A regular in winter but first time heard in months. 332 QT
Thunder Bay and 248 WG Winnipeg also audible (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 5040, Aug 19 at 0640, RHC English at S9/+20; natch, after
mention last time that`s it`s usually in Spanish after 06. Unknown
whether really also in English after 05. Only other still on is 6100,
JBA and not sure which language - unless it`s also sked Korea North
propagating as early as 15:40 local. Something`s always wrong at RHC
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 13680, Aug 19 at 2037, S7/S9 of suppressed modulation spikes
only, presumed RHC Spanish where something`s always wrong (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** EGYPT. 9439.995, Aug 19 at 2136, NO signal of R. Cairo in English
unto Canary SDR (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6930 USB, Aug 19 at 2317, howling and laughing,
audience reaxion to someguy speaking about ticket prices, vs heavy
storm noise level adding up to S3/S7. Three more as unID here:
https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,100843.0.html
as of 2329, maybe more IDed later? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 17855, Aug 19 at 2033, NO signal of REE direct, surely off
the air despite propagation degraded and no other signals on 16 mb.
Nor at 2134 into Canary Islands SDR. 15520 S4/S6 at 2033, and 11940
JBA carrier direct. But at 2134 to Canary, 15520 is VG but now in
Arabic like // 11670 good but with squeal --- and 11940 in Spanish has
horrible distortion like Aug 17; none checked on Aug 18. Something`s
always nogood at Noblejas.

2200 tokEnglish on Friday, now on all three, but same situation.
Without 17855, none very good to Maryland; despite way offbeam toward
ME, best on 15520 via Canarias. Topix: report from Beirut, and
interview someone from British embassy (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830.018, Aug 19 at 2201, VOT English is on today, S9+45/50
into UTwente but with squeal! I am not going to put up with that.
Autonotch does not work on it, and removed only by narrowing bandwidth
too far, below 2.37 kHz. It`s equally bad on LSB and USB so part of
the DSB modulation. Something`s always erroneous at Emirler. Off by
2355 so no extra German and Portuguese tonight (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** U S A. 293 MCW kHz, Aug 19 at 0648, FBY, 25-watt ND beacon at
Fairbury, Nebraska - a regular in winter but first time audible in
months (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Maryland SDR.

Also confirmed Friday August 19 at 1430 on WRMI 9955, S7/S9 direct but
vs high local line noise level.

Not confirmed and not checked Aug 19 at 1815 on IRRS 7290 & 1323, as
expected to be pre-empted on third Friday, so we were out voting
early. Did anyone not hear it?

Confirmed Friday August 19 at 2054 the 2030 on AM Italia, 1323 kHz,
S9/+20 into nearby Noale, atop some song CCI, what? Neither Romanian
SDR is getting it and one has me JBA. Kuwait is not getting Iran. UK
stations are very low power. That leaves 10 kW from Tanzania?
Unsought. Or some of the several China super-stations adding up to
over 1300 kW, but the music sounded Western. 2100 IRRS SW ID and FSN
without the CCI? But with storm crashes from Croatia to Poland. Next:

instead of TOMBS. Something`s nonfunxional at Nashville (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** UKRAINE [non]. (7730), catching up on `Ukraine: Security Issue`
from web instead of WRMI at 0500: for Aug 17, day 173? accented
fast-talking OM. Russia lost more than 44K personnel. Crimea turned
into military base, lots of explosions by Ukrainian
counter-offensives, ``de-militarization of peninsula``. More bridges
destroyed in Kherson region. Relatives reported disappeared. Abducted
a journalist, fate unknown. Russia fires up to 800x a day on Ukrainian
targets. Few Russians want to fight in Ukraine, so ``recruiting`` in
Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and trained on Chechnya.

For Aug 16, Day 174, by accented YL, including: railway connexions
suspended in southern Ukraine; explosions in Crimea, now military base
instead of tourist destination; could take a sesquimonth to liberate
part of Kherson region. Russia actively using Belarusian territory for
attax on Ukraine. 24 Aug is Ukraine`s independence day when increased
shelling is expected; be prepared for air raid sirens. Russia launched
more than 22,000 strikes of which only 300 landed on military
facilities. Kremlin enjoying keeping the world in tension. More danger
at Zap. nuclear plant. Only an ``iron curtain`` can save us from
Russia (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 9955, Thu Aug 18 at 1430, WRMI back on the air at this hour,
with Spanish DX show `Frecuencia al Día`, boding well for WOR 24 hours
later (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 9330, Aug 18 at 1428, JBA signal presumably the 500? kW
WBCQ/WLCR, very QRP? Or propagation? WRMI is not degraded. Note: when
setting up a SW station in the US, it`s far more advantageous to put
it as far *south* as possible than north. WWV e-mail for 1500 is
missing, so I axually listen at 1718, but she is still quoting the
1200 report too! instead of 1500, which was:

``:Product: Geophysical Alert Message wwv.txt
:Issued: 2022 Aug 18 1200 UTC
# Prepared by the US Dept. of Commerce, NOAA, Space Weather Prediction
Center
#
# Geophysical Alert Message
#
Solar-terrestrial indices for 17 August follow.
Solar flux 123 and estimated planetary A-index 31.
The estimated planetary K-index at 1200 UTC on 18 August was 3.
[but by 1800, K-index increased to 5]
Space weather for the past 24 hours has been moderate.
Geomagnetic storms reaching the G2 level occurred.
Radio blackouts reaching the R1 level occurred.

Space weather for the next 24 hours is predicted to be strong.
Geomagnetic storms reaching the G3 level are likely.``
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 930, Aug 18 at 0606 UT, music station, ``102.7, the ---``
mixing with sports WKY OKC. Since it`s only on paper, I hunt thru all
51 stations on 930 in the new NRC AM Log, and find the only one with a
102.7 FM connexion is: WFAT Battle Creek MI, U4 5/1 kW, `The Fat One`
pretending to be an FM station only, yet with nothing but a
translator, W274AQ, CLR = classic rock format. At radio-locator, night
pattern shows a null notch thisaway to the SW, favoring the north,
probably to protect WTAD Quincy IL not WKY; day pattern not so
notched.

Reverse lookup of all 102.7 stations in the WTFDA FMDB agrees the only
930 relay match is WFAT! (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 1130 kHz, Aug 18 at 0603 UT, soft rock atop KWKH sports
making medium SAH, no doubt KLEY Wellington KS on 250 W daytime power
rather than one watt at night, in its latest spate of modulation
instead of nonstop dead air. Something`s always wacky in Wellington.
Hey, NZ DXers should seek this (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO
2152)

** U S A. Re my unID Catholic or at least Christian Spanish Aug 4 and
5 between 06 and 07 UT on 1160: have not been able to hear since, but
this from Terry Krueger, FL, correlates:

``1160 FLORIDA WRLZ St. Cloud 0735 8/6/22 Nonstop soft Spanish
Christian vocals, man top of hour “Esta es WRLZ, Orlando [sic]… El
Corazón de Dios.” Peaking very good, so 2500 watts daytime, or 500
night? TLK`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 1430, Aug 18 at 0600 UT, WPLN Madison TN [near Nashville =
Public Library of Nashville], ID as 24 hours, back to BBCWS relay with
`Newsday`. Presumably cheating on 15 kW ND day facility (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2152)

** VANUATU. 7260, Aug 18 at 0555, no signal from R. Vanuatu, nor after
0600 on 11835. Had been checking every night, except Aug 17, when
Manuel Méndez, Spain, Lúcio Otávio Bobrowiec, Brasil, and Ron Howard,
California found it already absent from all known frequencies. There they
go again (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2152)
