Glenn Hauser logs December 22-23, 2022  View Printable Version

Logs
** CUBA. 6165, UT Thu Dec 22 at 0730, RHC English with `Ed Newman`
presenting Mailbag, S9/+10 undermodulated. Only RHC frequency still
on. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** MEXICO. From the WOR iog UT Dec 22 starting at 0131, from me:

``[WOR] XEPPM seems back --- While scanning for Pres. Zelenskyy`s
speech on SW, I ran across some S7/S9 music on 6185 about 0047 - and
it`s off/frequency minus like XEPPM used to be, about 6184.97. And
nothing else scheduled. It was still missing when checked last night.
Glenn`` --- replies:

At 0156: ``Yep - I'm not hearing any readable audio yet, but there's
definitely a signal there for the first time in weeks. It's a solstice
miracle! Eric Fetters-Walp, Lake Stevens, Washington``

``Hearing music on 6185 during a 0430-0440 check UT December 22. No
announcements, but consistent with XEPPM programming. Signal weaker
than typical XEPPM reception at my Houston QTH. Has been off the past
three weeks. More checks needed! Stephen Luce, Houston, Texas``

At 0532: ``I was disheartened last night when checking for XEPPM,
thought maybe they quit SW by this time. YES, tonight we are hearing a
woman presenter here, a lot of talk about Christmas, some music and
they are back. (Of course, Mexican Spanish). 73 - Rick in Arizona``
Barton

gh` further chex: at 0338, undermodulated Spanish S7/9+10. 0728, no
signal, so not yet all-night or until 1000v* as before.

``Dec 22 - Checking 6185, at 0735 UT, found no one there. Ron
(Calif.)`` Howard (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2170)

** UKRAINE [non]. From the WOR iog UT Dec 22, starting with me at
0035:

``[WOR] Pres. Z. about to address Congress --- At 0030 UT Thu,
coverage of Pres. Zelenskyy`s address to US Congress is about to
start, and multiple TV networks are on it, like CSPAN1, MSNBC, PBS,
CNN - for those only listening to SW, where what do you bet, not a
single US SW station will find it worth airing. Glenn``

``I am pleased to report Radio Martí appears to be carrying the speech
with simultaneous translation in Spanish. Can hear it on 7435 and 9565
kHz at the moment (0048 UTC) 73 Ricky Leong, Calgary, Alberta,
Canada``

``No point in trying to hear VOA English anywhere at this hour. No
active US private SW frequencies on it.

At 0050-0055 I did a quick MW scan during his speech, and it was
absolutely nowhere. Stations will not deviate from their talk, sports
or whatever commercial format. If we had any public radio stations
audible on MW, maybe there? Even less point in checking FM, except
KOSU with NPR -- No, not even there. Glenn``

Pundits later compared this to Winston Churchill in Dec 1941 (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2170)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2169 monitoring: confirmed UT

** U S A. 5085, Dec 22 at 0330 check, no signal yet from WTWW, tho
WRMI Legends has skidaddled back to 4980.

At 0541 via George McClintock: ``George is authorized usage of 5085
and 9475 kHz for WTWW. Regards, Tom Lucey`` of FCC.

``George, That`s a rather informal note -- Good; from when? Did not
hear any 5085 tonight. Glenn``

``His full e-mail is as good as a license to broadcast. George
McClintock 12-22-2022``.

WTWW back on 5085, Dec 22 at 2355, as George calls me to check on the
spurs he`s working to eliminate: still there now and a bit stronger
than last time, 5072.1 & 5097.9; SFA PPPP programming and stays on
past 0206 check. He does not have programming arranged yet for daytime
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2170)

** U S A. 4980, Dec 22 at 0732, WRMI with TOMBS // 5010 et al. 4980
just resumed with Legends at 23-05 but now running it longer. Yet not
as such on the skedgrid updated Dec 21. Other changes: WRMI-1 on 7730
to 160 degrees but BLANK 24h. WRMI-2 ALSO on 7730, 44 degrees to
Europe, with wide variety of Systems and shows 24h! It now matches
exactly what`s shown for WRMI-9 on 15770, also 44 degrees, 24 hours
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2170)

** U S A. 9329.761, Dec 22 at 0739, WBCQ/WLCR in English at S9/+10,
way off-frequency the lowest yet.

The winds here are howling, 40 mph gusts forecast, as intermittent
noise appears on MW & SW, probably rattling power lines; and we are
headed for extreme windchills like -24 F, and lows circa zero F, Thu &
Fri.

9329.838 is where Maine SDR finds it at 1917 Dec 22. Despite proximity
ought to be in skip zone, but S9/+15 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO
2170)

** U S A. 13845 & 15825, Dec 22 at 1617, NO signals from these WWCRs.
K index at 15 was only 3. Must be OFF or there would at least be JBA
carriers. 12160 is still inbooming S9+30 and the other WWCR 9980 is
also silent as it has been most days lately. Survey of other USignals
finds normal reception from WRMIs, 13820 R. Martí, 15755 WINB DRM,
even JBA 15555 USB WJHR. At 1652 I check Maine SDR for WWCR and it too
is hearing nothing but 12160. At 1916, however, all 4 WWCRs are on and
into Maine SDR (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VANUATU. 7260, Dec 22 at 0734, R. Vanuatu still here and VP. Ron
Howard also reports it 0610-0731 with severe weather warning, and news
about Fiji leaning more toward ANZUS rather than China (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

This report dispatched at 0212 UT December 23

Glenn Hauser logs December 21, 2022  View Printable Version
Thursday, December 22 2022

Logs
** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98 RC USB, since it`s Wednesday, Dec 21, time for
another LRA36 check, as I`m up and at it by 1459: best Argentine SDR
is offline so I try the four others: two get nothing, and two get VP
S2/S3 signal at least enough to confirm it`s on, with prélude music,
but signal vanishes already at 1505* before any talk/sign/on. Also
check Uruguay remote, nil. Keep running an Argie with nothing but
noise until I quit at 1542.

Just as well, as I expected them to be insufferable about some silly
ballgame. Beyond me how proficiency at ballgaming by a few guys
translates to national pride, anywhere, when there are countless other
fields of endeavour which really matter (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA. 284 MCW kHz, Dec 21 at 0738 UT, dash and QD, 500 watt ND
beacon at The Pas, Manitoba. A few of the other Canadian Y## beacons
also audible (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6100, Dec 21 at 0727, RHC S9+20 of dead air in English except
for hum; 6165 with S9+10 of DA; only SW transmitters still on. Often
it`s 6060 like that instead of 6100. Something`s always wrong at RHC
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 13700, Dec 21 at 1549, RHC is S9/+10 direct but no spurs.
Something`s not always wrong at RHC. The Other Side:

``All about MSMEs in Cuba: who will own them and which ones will
prosper? The creation of MSMEs is at the core of the Cuban
government's economic strategy. What are they? Why are they gaining
prominence? What are their chances of success? What Cuba do they
represent? The series of articles we begin today answers these
questions.

Rafaela Cruz, La Habana 19 Dic 2022 - 18:40 CET

Since Fidel Castro bequeathed absolute rule to the politically weaker
Raúl Castro, we do not know exactly who makes up the inner circle of
power in Cuba. That transition, in monarchical terms, was a
metamorphosis from a centralized pharaonic system — Fidel ruled alone
— to a late medieval kingship model, with a primus inter pares (first
among equals) forced to share his power with and lean on key
figures...``
https://diariodecuba.com/economia/1671471614_44132.html

This article never explains what MSME means! I Googled it: ``Micro,
Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs)`` There must be quite a different
term and abbr. in original Spanish; EMPM? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** INTERNATIONAL INTERNET. The Paul Winter Consort Solstice Saga,
retrospective on YouTube was publicized to start at 0000 UT Dec 22,
but I found it already playable earlier, so hopefully whenever
indefinitely ondemand for convenience; via:
https://www.PaulWinter.com
It`s 2:48 of audiovideo. Greetings, Winter! As we in OK brace
ourselves for record low frigidity (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KIRITIMATI. 846 kHz, Dec 21 at 0730, no JBA carrier detected from
R. Kiribati, perhaps another silent Wednesday. Nor any other TP or TA
split 9/kHz carriers audible (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NIGERIA. 7255-, Dec 21 at 0719 check, no VON signal (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. Our annual pilgrimage around Enid to view Xmas lights,
sound-and-light shows, UT Wed Dec 21 circa 0100-0230 UT. Singing Xmas
Trees again in the oilwell lot at NE corner of Oak & Oakwood, with
stereo sound on 89.5 FM, one of the few clearest lowband frequencies
around here, very weak Part 15 range so you need to park right close
to them beyond the chainlink fence. Music mostly Chipmunx --
¡¡¡Alvin!!!

The other one again at an otherwise dark residence in the Pheasant Run
addition on the westedge off Garland: quite elaborate and better music
variety including Mannheim Steamroller, stereo on 94.9 FM. Ruined only
by Pistol Pete flashing on now and then, the shameful OSU mascot in
this age of school shootings. Otherwise, lights only viewed in the
upscale lake district neighborhood, just south of the KGWA 960
transmitter site which must ruin MW DX reception around there.

Once again, I encourage others to report on their own area Part 15 FM
Xmas lightshow activity. There must be a lot of it (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** SPAIN. 9690, Wed Dec 21 at 2310, S9+10/20 into Maryland SDR, token
English from REE, feature now about the annual Xmas Lottery,
apparently a Big Deal in Spain for many years; 2324 Catalan song and
interview singer about food market in Barcelona. 12030 weaker but
sufficient, ME beam managing to modulate today. 11945 to SAm quite
weaker; and 11685 to Africa, NO signal except RTTY. Attention split
with TURKEY, q.v. (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 5960.002, Wed Dec 21 from 2300, VOT English succeeds
today, VG S9+30/40 into UTwente, splitting my attention with
simulSPAIN, q.v. It would be appreciated if VOT could arrange its
AWOLs to coincide with REE`s on-days, MWF. Quick check of 5960 into
Maryland finds it only S7/S9 but less of the CCCCCCI which molests it
in Europe. Includes 2317-2322 `Ripping Files` [???] about criminal
liability of AI - anticipating such a problem as they gain
independence and self-awareness. 2330 discussing gas energy from
Turkmenistan, and via? Azerbaijan. 2342-2348 `Feeling Supreme` on the
benefits of pumpkin seeds, rich in anti-oxidants. 2348 multi-lingual
ID filler reel. 2353 sign-off with jumbled but correct English
schedule. 2354 fragment of IS before cut off, uncovering XJPBS in
Chinese from East Turkistan, standard denunciation (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2169 monitoring: ``From: Richard Lemke, St.
Albert, Alberta, Canada, the desk of Richard’s listening Post, Radio:
JRC NRD-535 HF, Antenna: random long wires in the trees; Dear Glenn:
Confirming World of Radio #2169, Merry Christmas/holidays, WRMI:
9395, 0130, 0157 (45443), (55343), 0059 , December 20 UT [Tue]
5850, 1044 (55434), confirmed. 1058, 5850, December 21 UT [Wed](Lemke,
Richard -AB)``

Confirmed UT Wednesday December 21 at 0030, S9+10/20 on WRMI 9395 into
Missouri SDR.

Also confirmed UT Wednesday December 21 circa 1035 when I happen to
awaken, the 1030, VG direct on WRMI 5850.

Also confirmed Wednesday December 21 at 2211 the 2200 on WBCQ 7490,
minus 55 Hz = 7489.945, S9+10/20 into Maryland SDR, S9+10 direct. 2229
minute of dead air, 2230 ID and `Tom Call Theater` filling an
`*available timeslot` --- BTW on the WBCQ skedgrid I see that the
Messianic trying to build a SW station in Sudan South now has his own
hour on WBCQ, UT Wed 01-02 on 7490-: ``Operation Nehemiah Missions
With Messianic Rabbi William Levi``

Next WORs:
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 9395 to NNW
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S

Surprise: WMLK in DRM on 9270-9275-9280 at 1554 tune-in, usual gospel
huxter pontificating about what is adultery and what not, some
dropouts, but S9/+10 into Maryland SDR. SNR 22v dB. I copy down all
the other parameters. Label says it`s the Ampegon TSW 2300
transmitter. No spoken ID circa ToH. Presumably a test. FEBC finished
with 9275 AM at 1600, but this overlapped. Nominal WMLK-AM sked starts
at 1700.

At 1610 switched to Johnny Cash, ``Ring of Fire``, in a loop. Still
past 1620. At 1624 switched to other music with some dropouts:
``Amazing Grace`` on plucked instrument.

Label says test from WMLK; antenna: curtain with double stacked
dipole, xHE_AAC(A43456) WMLK EEP Audio 9.14 kbps

When I first tuned in it was different:
xHE_AAC(7B) WMLK Radio EEP Audio 7.46 kbps.
SNR varying around 22 dB. Mode B, MSC 64 QAM, SDC 4 QAM

1627 text msg: Hello Nathaniel, how are you doing?
Parameters have changed again: 13.78 kbps, etc.

Some of the stuff displayed:

``Resistance to large delay/doppler spread`` DRM Mode D ILV L
I have no idea what a lot of this means.

``TX: Ampegon TSW-2500D from Ampegon Power Electronics AG,
Switzerland`` --- Note: earlier it read TSW 2300! Which is it??

1637, besides service 1 only, adds 2 and 4 but disappear before can
copy details. SDR freezes 1640, reload, a bit more, then WMLK signal
off per S-meter, blank DRM readout. 1642 sig back on but nothing heard
- because it`s now in AM, starting regular sked early with Yahweh
stuff.

Andrea Lawendel, Italy did not have enough to decode but heard via US
remote, same one? Wonders if illegally broadcasting to USA only? I
think, no more so than all the other US SW stations on AM with nominal
external targets.

DEJOM drops off AM air again at 1650. 1651 back on S9 with silent DRM,
9.14 kbps. And so it goes.

That soon goes off too, and NOTHING further, DRM nor AM, as I let the
SDR run 9275 background noise until 1830.

Andy Lawendel replies: ``Just faint traces of signals on most of
Italian SDRs. Better in Germany, best of all in Ireland, but still no
audio (never above -13 dB, which is considered a fair minimum). It was
during the "Ring of fire" slot, I didn't check again. Andy``

Wolfgang Bueschel reminds of this earlier from Bodo, DF8DX: ``But
something is indeed happening. I'm flying to the USA tomorrow Dec 11
and will be at WMLK until Dec 22, to work off all the little
unfinished business and do a DRM upgrade. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

The customer had ordered this later, but due to delivery problems
with the equipment I could not finish it in the summer. Now all parts
should be delivered. In my spare time and maybe on the side, I will
also be active as ham radio operator KT3Q partly with the WMLK antenna
on the KW {sic: SW?} stations. (df8dx Dec 10)``

Per QRZ.com: DF8DX Germany flag Germany, Bodo Fritsche, Rebbergstr.
6b, 5417 Untersiggenthal, Switzerland.

9275 not rechecked by me until 2211: still off - but by now supposed
to be off; never back on today? DEJOM *never* has anything new to say,
anyway, and DRM can`t fix that (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 4980, Dec 21 at 2327, Xmasmx as WRMI Legends high-tails it
back here after a brief run on ex-WTWW 5085, since George has
reactivated and reclaimed that. Alan Roe checked the WRMI skedgrid
which now shows 4980 straight 2300-0500, joined at other hours by a
complex mix of some others for Legends: 15770, 9455, 9395, 7730, 5950,
5850. WTWW-2 has not yet come back up on 5085 by 2400, but eventually
to be PPPP on SFAW; which used to be on WTWW-1 5830, not yet resumed
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 770, Dec 21 at 0219 UT, Miles City ad during bandscan on
caradio while wrapping up our Xmas lites tour of Enid. Ergo, KATL,
Montana, no doubt still/again on ND day pattern and 10 kW day power
rather than 1 kW night direxional NW. Without even trying for it, but
from dominant peak soon faded down (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VANUATU. 7260, Dec 21 at 0719, JBA R. Vanuatu still here rather
than 7890, etc. (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
