** AFGHANISTAN [non]. 7600, Aug 18 at 1526, new clandestine
Afghanistan International TV puts VG signal into Kuwait SDR, S9+15/25
in SAM mode. Very slight hum. Bit of vamp music, seagull sounds, not
sure if language be Dari = Farsi or Pashto. Should be both as time
goes on. IDs in passing with English? name ``Afghan International``
and spelling out AFINTLTV. 1528 brief English clips from W and Obama
about previous end of Taliban regime. 1530 at ToH in Afgh, theme and
continuous talk, including female voice about Topic A, some crowd
noise clips such as at 1603. Just what you would expect from a TV
soundtrack. Still going with more of same past 1700. At 1725 a woman
starts singing briefly. 1729 more clips of GW Bush about the Taliban
takeover. 1730 maybe language switch? Still VG past 1737+.

This was first reported on 7600, August 16 and misidentified as a BBC
frequency change. Arthur Pozner explained at 1705 UT Aug 17: ``The
7600 kHz transmission is NOT BBC. Supposedly originating from R.
Afghanistan Intl and based in the UK. Transmission site may be the
same as R. Iran Int'l, near Tashkent. The parent company of both
programs is Volant Media UK Ltd.``

Ron Howard then found this info about it but failing to mention SW: we
wonder if it can have more viewers by satellite TV now in Afgh?

https://iranintl.com/en/world/volant-media-uk-launches-afghanistan-international-tv

``World --- Monday, 16 Aug 2021 20:42
Volant Media UK Launches Afghanistan International TV

On Sunday, the day the Taliban captured Afghanistan’s capital Kabul,
Volant Media UK Ltd., the parent company of Iran International TV,
launched Afghanistan International TV (AITV). AITV aspires to serve as
a 24/7 international news network to provide reliable information for
audiences and protect media freedom in the country.

With Afghanistan undergoing a chaotic transition after the US military
withdrawal, AITV aspires to be a voice for the voiceless — to tell the
story of the people of Afghanistan, as Harun Najafizada, AITV’s
director tells Iran International TV. He revealed concerning reports
of the Taliban’s tense relations with the media community and how
independent journalistic activities have been severely disrupted.

Afghanistan International TV crew at their broadcast station. FILE

The situation in Afghanistan is so dire that AITV decided to launch
the network prior to the planned start date — which was slated for the
United Nations’ International Peace Day on September 21. The hope is
that this will fill a media vacuum that has developed with so many
people fleeing the country and will provide a critical source of
reporting and information amid rapidly shifting events on the ground.

AITV, which has started with daily nine hours of live television news
and programs, plans to expand to a full 24/7 schedule as soon as
possible. But AITV also has a radio stream which is already offering
24-hour news and programs.

In terms of programming, Najafizada said AITV plans to rely heavily on
reporting from across Afghanistan and to produce informative programs
— talk shows, documentaries, and debates — to engage with people
inside and outside Afghanistan. AITV will be an independent and
impartial channel which will report facts, in keeping with standard
journalistic norms.

As to how AITV will fare with the Taliban in control of Afghanistan,
Najafizadeh says it is not about AITV, but it is about the Taliban and
how they receive the international media. AITV is prepared for any
scenario.``

This mentions a ``radio stream`` but WTFK? No 7600 cited. Its span as
yet unknown, nor whether there be any other frequency. As of Aug 18
there is still nothing in HFCC A-21 on 7600. Since Tashkent is only
756 km = 469 miles from Kabul, 7600 might work 24 hours (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98-RCUSB, Aug 18 at 1446, no signal this
Wednesday from LRA36 into two Brazilian SDRs (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA. 248-MCW kHz, Aug 18 at 0621, WG, NDbeacon from Winnipeg is
barely copiable due to current local blob over the frequency (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KIRITIMATI. 846 kHz, Aug 18 at 0618, JBA carrier again from
presumed R. Kiribati (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

4102.8, Aug 18 at 0604, the ``W`` weather beacon also JBA, also sends
various other letters and numbers (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 6160- & 4790-, Aug 18 at 0610, both WBCQs are OFF, instead
of BSing all night. Perhaps there be a storm around Monticello. 7490-
is also off but that`s normal at this hour. 9330- is NOT off,
continues with WLCR. It`s unclear whether the current 9330
transmissions with a lower-powered backup transmitter are coming thru
the Ampegon high-gain antenna, or one of the regular antennas. The
strength sometimes implies a lot of antenna gain is in play; and
remaining on air while the others are off also implies the separate
transmitter site for it (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 9455, Aug 18 at 0612, WRMI-5 is still off the air; while
9395 & 9955 are unusually VG at this hour. Nothing found at WRMI
disgraced FB about what`s going on with 9455 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA. 335-MCW kHz, Aug 17 at 0624 UT, ND beacon YLD is JBA, 1000
watts from Chapleau ON. Only other ones making it lately but not
specifically logged at this time: 332 QT Thunder Bay, and 382 YPL
Pickle Lake, both ONs (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KASHMIR [non]. 15170, Aug 17 at 1515, another Tuesday-only
broadcast of IRRS with Kashmir Civitas; via UTwente, S9+25, cuts off
air for few seconds just as I tune in and back on. This week it keeps
going in presumed Urdu talk with understrumming, no early cut to
extraneous songs in English. Still talking when modulation cut at
1529, replaced by ROMANIA interval signal twice until carrier off at
1529.5*. It also sounded like a power reduxion and increase in noise
level before RRI IS started, but was not watching strength meter
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KIRITIMATI. 846 kHz, Aug 17 at 0625, JBA carrier the only one on
9-kHz intervals. A bit stronger than last time, but I never get any
audio from presumed R. Kiribati; Xmas island so far eastward from the
rest of the far-flung island nation that it`s already long post-sunset
0438 UT, at Kiritimati UT +14,
https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/kiribati/kiritimati
similar to Hawaii to the north at UT -10 = really the same zone except
for 24 hours apart (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN [and non]. 15520, Aug 17 at 2257, S5-S6 of dead air no doubt
from REE into Maryland SDR, yet another day of RNE failing to
modulate, presumably for several hours, while the other three
frequencies are to be heard, 17855, 11940 and 11670. 15520 continues
dead past 2301 until cutoff at 2306* -- probably the normal weekday
time following a few minutes of earworm IS as on 11670 but unchecked
during this period after noting 2301 that frequency had RHC colliding,
just now on air // 11760, with REE // 11940. By 2306 recheck, only RHC
is left on 11670. Something`s nonsensical at Noblejas: they keep
turning the 15520 transmitter on but do not notice it`s silent (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 1540, Aug 17 at 0632 UT, ``America`s Best Music, AM 1540 and
98-7 FM``. NRC AM Log shows that matches KBOA Kennett MO in the SE
corner bootheel, NOStalgia format, U1, 1000 watts day, ONE WATT night,
yeah, sure. That would be 700 km per watt, or 435 miles per watt.
Briefly atop jumble including talker presumed 50 kW KXEL IA and vs
ever-present het from 1540.2, WKVQ, Eatonton GA daytimer (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 1550 kHz, am trying August 17 to confirm KKLE Winfield KS,
which apparently has been off air for almost a year, time to make a
showing or lose license; in light of sibling Rocking M Media station
1130 KLEY Wellington KS, C&W music already back on for several days
and audible even at night despite legal power of ONE WATT.

In fact, per NRC AM Log, KKLE shares exactly the same Wellington
street address as KLEY! Could both also be at same transmitter site?
No, FCC info shows KKLE in fact at Winfield, east of Wellington and
north of Ark. City. KKLE is 250 watts daytime and ND but if on,
nowhere near the 250-watt day signal 1130 puts in here with direxional
disadvantage if really in play, but with lower-frequency groundwave
advantage. 1550 on or off has never been obvious here like 1130.

1550, Aug 17 at 1502 UT on R75 with E/W longwire, I have sports talk
interview, not news, fading with fast SAH, so at least two stations.
On DX-398, DF of most signal from NNE/SSW, i.e. KKLE. At 1700 on ND
caradio, music which among the closest 1550s implies KRZD Springfield
MO, 5 kW ND if it`s still rock as in last year`s NRC AM Log. KMAD
Madill in S OK next to TX also listed as C&W, 250 watts ND, but I
never hear it and not sure it be on air now.

At 1704 UT on NRD-545 with E-W loop, I can hear an ``ESPN Radio``
mention, which points to KYAL Sapulpa OK, 2.5 kW direxional, and the
`dominant` daytime 1550 if you can call it that. Also in the fringe
area is KDCC Dodge City KS, but listed with Fox Sports Radio, 1 kW
direxional. KKLE format was News/Talk, which I am not now hearing on
1550, but I did have a DF of at least a carrier from that angle.

I also monitored 1550 around sunset, 0100+ UT, but too much further
confusion with skywavers also incoming. August SS/SR times for KKLE to
switch between ND 250 and 52 watt powers: 0115/1145; September:
0030/1215 UT. NRC says KKLE also has pre-sunrise authority for 63
watts, i.e. from 1100 UT until times above. But from KLEY 1130
behavior, it`s kleyr that Rocking M stations don`t strictly follow the
rules of federal communications LAW (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** AFGHANISTAN. Checking the MW situation, Aug 16 at 1639 via New
Delhi SDR --- the klosest Kiwi only one megameter from Kabul, so 400
kW transmitters at night if non-direxional ought to be pounding in ---
compare to mere 50 kW clear channels e.g. from Chicago or Nashville
out to similar distances in N America. 1107 is chanting, and ``salaam
aleikum``, originally the main R. Afghanistan outlet, but JBA algo on
1296 much weaker, which might no longer be the co-located 400 kW USAGM
transmitter, or underpowered, or Iran or India.

NRC International DX Digest reports: ``As of this writing, reports
indicated that 1107 kHz in Kabul had been taken. "They took control of
the Kabul 1107 kHz main station around 1700 UTC, station ID'ed Emirat
Islamiya Afganistan at 1800, now mostly Qur`an recitation," reported
Jorma Mäntylä in the DXing.info Facebook group, August 15. 1107
transmits from the same site as what was 1296 VOA.`` (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** CHINA. 13020, Aug 16 at 1352, only CNR1 jammer detected in the
12-13s or 10-11s, JBA talk with flutter (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN [and non]. 15520, August 16 at 2202, S6-S8 of dead air into
Maryland SDR, while REE English on Monday is underway, mainly an
interview with an accordionist, modulating, not dead air on 11940,
17855 and 11670, from most to least signals. Correlates with the unID
DA I had on 15520, Aug 15 at 0008 long after scheduled sign-off. But
Aug 17 at 0015 check, nothing on 15520 while 17855 & 11940 remain;
11670 by now switched to suptorted RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830, Aug 16 at 2202, quick check confirms VOT English is
not AWOL tonight into Maryland SDR (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

August 15 at 2000 on IRRS SW via AM Italia, 918 kHz, VG S9+33 into
nearby Noale SDR; also audible at UTwente S9 but with noise, QRM.

Also confirmed Sun Aug 15 at 2230 on WRMI 9955, VG into Knoxville SDR
despite off the back. (Area 51 webcast no longer WOR at 2200)

Also confirmed UT Mon Aug 16 at 0030 on WRMI 7730, VG S9+20 direct.

Also confirmed UT Mon Aug 16 after 0130 on WRN webcast to N America.

Also confirmed UT Mon Aug 16 at 0230 on WRMI 5800, S9+25 and 7780
S9+15 both via Missouri remote.

Also confirmed UT Mon Aug 16 from 0304.7 on Area 51 via WBCQ 6159.902,
S7-S8 to Missouri remote but with 6165 Cuba ACI. Previous music show
ran over 0300, no ID but ``and now the last word`` and into WOR
playback. Looking at current skeds, 6150 or 6145 would be better for
everything on WBCQ than 6160v, less ACI or CCI especially at night in
NAm. Next, nothing more on Monday or Tuesday, but:

1030 UT Wednesday WRMI 5850 to NW
2100 UT Wednesday WRMI 7780 to NE
2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW

UNIDENTIFIED. 4975, Aug 16 at 0615, this pervasive JBA carrier is now
strong enough to detect some modulation --- music and talk same as on
4980 with TOMBS! Unseems overload/crossmod as still there with preamps
turned off. Could it just be a spur out of WRMI 4980 transmitter? With
TOMBS so pervasive not only on WRMIs, perhaps the only way to be sure
is to detect whether it come and go at same time as 4980, *0000-1100*.
But on Aug 17 not checked until 0033, when again TOMBS audio is JBA on
4975 like inbooming on 4980; now via Knoxville SDR. Of course this
contradicts previous report of `A Voz do Brasil` programming after 22
UT; maybe two different 4975 signals? There is also a JBA carrier on
4985, a match? or RBC Brasil (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
