Glenn Hauser logs November 17-18, 2021  View Printable Version

Hauser
** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98 RCUSB, Nov 17 at 1512, still NO signal from
LRA36 into three Brazilian SDRs; nor at 1543 into one Argentine.
Formerly active bihour Wed around 14-16, so suspect summer hiatus in
progress until the new quadri-woman team take over in Feb or Mar
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** THAILAND. 13750, Nov 18 at 0002, checking out HSK9 North American
service of R. Thailand, as I am amazed by the decent to good reception
often reported elsewhere in the continent, but the 250 kW never any
good here. My generous meter claims S5-S8 but it sounds VP, with
flutter, unreadable. Will there be any change at 0030 when they
supposedly switch slews from east coast to west? Well, at 0032 it`s
even worse, JBA carrier.

Who cares about reaching the Great Center of North America? HFCC B21
shows CIRAF 7, central for the entire span 0000-0330 UT but axually on
periphery of E&W; center beam of 30 degrees only at 0030-0100 is
slewed -24 to 6 degrees at 0000-0030 and again 0200-0330 when CIRAF 8
is added = east coast; slewed +8 degrees to 38 for English at
0030-0100 only; English again at 0200-0230 for the east coast, same as
at 0000, scheduling which does not make much sense.

As for the approx. center targets of each beam: 6 degrees, north of
Alaska, into Detroit; 30 degrees skirting SW Alaska mainland, to
Portland to El Paso; 38 degrees, across Aleutians down California
coast such as Point Reyes.

Meanwhile, I am also checking remotes, for comparison: in Maryland
there is no signal before or after 0030. Of course this path is almost
transpolar, and would normally be inferior, less propagable.

However, the KPH remote at Point Reyes on the coast of California is
getting it at S3, yet sufficiently readable, also with quick
short/long path echo which I am hardly expecting: Comparing short to
long path from Udorn to KPH, the short path goes no further north than
the Aleutian islands, while LP crosses the Indian Ocean, the other
Prince Edward Island, ham DXpedition target Bouvet, across Argentina,
Galápagos and up the west coast of México. All this consulting my
trusty NGS globe with geometer.

Short distance is 7600 statute miles = 12231 km, per
distancefromto.net so long path would be 17300 stmi = 28360 km. The
difference between L&S = 16130 km. Compared to speed of light, 298
Mm/sec, that`s 0.054 second, or an echo delay of between 1/19 and 1/20
of one second. All approx., of course, and axual distances bouncing
off the ionosphere would be slightly more than great circles at ground
level.

Via KPH remote: 0025 a *commercial* for Subaru cars with cruise
control, 0026 news headlines. Probably the only government external
service with ads. Carrier drops for a few sex at 0029.5, interrupting
headlines, back on sounds slightly louder but not on the meter in USB
mode. In AM mode it makes S4. And now it switches to THAI rather than
another semi-hour in English! as had been the case in previous seasons
and still alleged in HFCC B21. Checking KPH again at 0208, reads S3
but sounds JBA in presumed English.

Further evidence that while accessing the VOA relay in Udorn, no doubt
as part of the bilateral deal, PRD ought to insist on using Greenville
for broadcasts to North America (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 397 MCW kHz, Nov 17 at 0725 UT, ND beacon which is broken.
CIN? Third letter stutters. It`s really CIR, 25 watts from Cairo IL,
and another listener also found this in RNA Signals List:
https://rxx.classaxe.com/en/rna/signals
``20181130 - Bill Stewart reports a 'hic-up' on the 'R'. Often sounds
like CIN``. Already went over this anomaly in my last log of January
27. They sure have had plenty of time to fix it! (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** U S A. 407 MCW kHz, Nov 17 at 0721 UT, regular HRU, 25-watt NDB at
Herington KS is mixing with a weaker one, but almost the same period,
currently obscuring its first letter, but it ends with OC. Aha, that`s
OOC, 25 watt NDB in Natchitoches LA, which I discussed at length
recently. RNA Signals List indeed shows a period of 7.90 seconds for
HRU, and 7.8 seconds for OOC. So it would take a long wait for them to
separate at the rate of 0.1 second per iteration. Eventually they
would be totally alternating. I was tuned to 405 USB where I hear them
much better than 407 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2111 monitoring: Richard Lemke, Alberta
corrects:

``Dear Glenn: So the 5950 kHz, 9955 kHz, were correct as all along

Confirmed UT Thursday November 18 at 0130 on WRMIs: 5010 S7 into
Maryland; 9395 S7 into Winnipeg.

Next WOR 2113 should be ready early UT Fri Nov 19 for download and
first SWBCs on WRMIs 5850 & 7780 at 0130 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 15370, Nov 16 at 2054, RHC S9+25 in suptorted French, while
English on 15140 is not so bad. Something`s always wrong at RHC.

Time for another episode of The Other Side, lest we be swayed by RHC
propaganda, even if we could understand it:

``The Success of #15NCuba --- For those who dreamed of a sudden end to
the dictatorship, not much happened…but for those who understand that
outcome as the result of an already- irreversible process, the
November 15 demonstrations were a triumph...``
https://diariodecuba.com/cuba/1637069576_35579.html

And as I write this on the PBS Newshour:
https://video.kqed.org/video/cuba-crackdown-1637101529/
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KASHMIR [non]. 15170, Nov 16 at 1610, routine check for weekly
Tuesday clandestine Kashmir Civitas via IRRS via Romania: NO signal
into UTwente. Is it all over? I garbled it again last time as
``Citivas`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** PUERTO RICO. Re my lament that DDP beacon on 391 is not being
heard, this reply: ``Hi Glenn! Yes, I was the listener who last
reported hearing beacon DDP-391 on Nov 7 with complete details, which
is why my logging shows up in the RNA Signal List. On the NDB
Groups.io list, several listeners reported it off starting around Nov
10, but it has since been reported on the same list as being back on
around Nov 15. None of these listeners reported their reception
details, so their reports do not show up on the RNA Signal List. One
of the listeners who keeps careful track of NOTAMs reporting that
there was none issued for DDP during this period. Steve Howe, Saint
Albans, VT``

Guess what, in the meantime I did log DDP for the first time this
season: 391 MCW kHz, Nov 16 at 0735, DDP; also audible tuned to 389
USB (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 359 MCW kHz, Nov 16 at 0737, SDR, 25-watt ND beacon at
Snyder TX, not far from OK but seldom herd; tuned to 358 USB (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 7240 LSB, Tue Nov 16 at 2105, ``No Name Net`` taking 15
check-ins, some talkovers, including from KS and OK. First QSO seemed
about random topix as to be expected. This appeared in final edition
of John Norfolk`s ``Nets to You`` schedule of April 2007 when it was
at 2200 M/W/F on 7230-LSB in Central US (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2112 monitoring: despite my best plans,
missed checking Tue Nov 16 at 2330 on WRMI 9955, which Richard Lemke
caught last week. But Jeff White now confirms it has started at that
new time and his schedule has been updated. Next:
1030 UT Wednesday WRMI 5850 to NW
2200 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 9395 to NNW, 5010 to S

** U S A. 9275, Nov 16 at 2059, still no sign of a signal from the new
WMLK transmitter, which had been projected for end of October. So?
Nothing later than this at:

** U S A. RF 14, Nov 16 at 1658 UT, KERA-HD breaks thru with ``KERA
KIDS`` full-screen ID on 13-1. I get 13-2 to PSIP as kids -- lower
case, as another PBS station overdoes it with *two* channels for them
during daytime. Rabbitears.info shows KERA also with 13-3 Create and
13-4 World Channel; did not get to those before fadeout. KETA OKC has
its 2, 3 and 4 in different order: -2 World, -3 Create, -4 Kids.

I was sitting on RF 14 as it looked liable to decode: would it be KOCY
OKC LP? From 1630 I was getting lots of tropo-enhanced BAD signals,
such as 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 21, 26; while some `local` OKC channels
were not decoding, no doubt because of DX QRM, even really local Enid
powerhouse K17JN-D. Two Tulsa marketers did come thru, RF 20 and RF
28.

I was expecting KS instead of TX, since KHCC 90.1 was completely
overriding KUCO when trying to hear `Stardate` at 1558: only barely by
nulling R Kansas as much as possible by pointing the PL-880 rod toward
KS. KERA and DFW Metroplex happen to be almost same direxion from here
as OKC where the TV antenna is aimed. Rabbitears shows KERA`s 975 kW
ERP direxional for the northern hemisphere from Cedar Hill antenna
farm at SE corner of Dallas (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA. 9900, Nov 14 at 2254, checking too late for Cairo, rather
Chinese echoing, S8-S6 with flutter, so CNR1 jamming of RTI Taiwan
from 2230 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA. 9630, Nov 14 at 2308, Chinese opera S9+20/30, per Aoki CRI
Cantonese this hour only, from Jinhua 831 site. There is vocalizing so
it`s not Firedragon (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA. 6865, Nov 15 at 2316, JBA algo, S7-S6 with flutter, presumed
CNR1 jammer on a known SOH frequency (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 15370, Sun Nov 14 at 2259, RHC in Spanish, not Esperanto, but
maybe already finished from 2230 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 11880, Nov 14 at 2301, RHC S9/+30 in French, but JBM with
hum. Something`s always wrong at RHC. Something`s always wrong at
RHC:

11850, Nov 14 at 2302, RHC S9+20 in Spanish, but suptorted, with JBA
parasitic spur carriers plus and minus 10 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** EGYPT. 9900, Nov 15 at 2126, NO signal from R. Cairo English into
UTwente. Maybe they got the message from monitors that last few days`
attempts were fruitless due to abominable modulation. Sad (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6930 USB, Nov 14 at 2252, rock music at S9+20. HFU
https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,89131.0.html
has many logs but none later than 2229 of Outhouse Radio, relaying
others, SSTV images.

6925-AM, Nov 14 at 2253, JBA talk in the shadow of 6930-USB; no logs
on HFU until Pandemic Radio starting up at 0132 Nov 15 (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR) see also UNIDENTIFIED

** PUERTO RICO. 391 MCW kHz, Nov 14 at 0732, NO signal from DDP, 1000
watt NDB in San Juan / Dorado. I heard it several times last winter,
but no luck so far now. Is it off the air? Still in dxinfocentre.com;
and the RNA Signal List at classaxe.com as Luis Muñoz Marín
international AP, last heard 2021-11-07, power could be 2 or 3 kW. But
something changed for the worse? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 9690, Nov 15 at 2300, token English on Monday from REE,
sufficient direct into portable DX-398 with shortwire. 10 minutes of
news this time, followed by Amy Egan interview at 2310 with manager of
Palace Hotel about the post-pandemic return of luxury travel; like,
now already? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY [and non]. 5960, Nov 14 at 2312, S8-S9 but JBM, sounds like
YL talk, language not certain. Checking for VOT English but should be
doing better than this, off? Also sked per Aoki is PBS Xinjiang,
Urumqi, EAST TURKISTAN, land of ChiCom imperialist genocide against
Uyghurs and other Moslems, in Chinese. Also in the new B-21 EiBi as
starting at 2310. However, JRX in Brasil was hearing VOT same date at
2348-2355. Possibly came on late?

5960, Nov 15 at 2259, no signal on the portable, but 2314 on the
bigrig something JBA, China instead of Turkey? But but, via UTwente at
2333 tune-in, immediate VOT ID in English, S9/+15. So the TRT N
American service just isn`t making it this far. Also some CCI
presumably Urumqi. At 0000 Nov 16, Turkey off and CNR clearly
uncovered with timesignal, Chinese anthem (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. ND beacon scans are disrupted by a local noise
source which cuts on and off LW irregularly, as if a
thermostat-controlled heater blower, certainly not from my house.

329 MCW kHz, Nov 15 at 0722 UT, PMV, 25 watt ND beacon from
Plattsmouth NE.

325 MCW kHz, Nov 15 at 0724 UT, BV, 25 watt NDB from Batesville AR.
Mixing with dash YLD, 1000 watts from Chapleau, Ontario, normally the
only one heard here.

341 MCW kHz, Nov 15 at 0726 UT, DNI, 25 watt NDB from Sherman /
Denison TX; as local EI Enid is still silent; nor OIN Oberlin KS which
normally reigns

347 MCW kHz, Nov 15 at 0728 UT, AFK, 25 watt NDB from Nebraska City
NE.

383 MCW kHz, Nov 15 at 0730 UT, LB, 25 watt NDB from Liberal KS,
mixing with others, first copied maybe as LBO? Rapid repeats without
much pause. Also CNP, 25 watts from Chappelle NE.

385 MCW kHz, Nov 15 at 0732 UT, HO, 200 watt NDB from HOt Springs AR;
tuned to 383-USB mixing with LB and CNP.

389 MCW kHz, Nov 15 at 0733 UT, EN, 25 watt NDB from kENosha WI, new
here

392 MCW kHz, Nov 15 at 0734 UT, FMZ, 25 watt NDB from Fairmont /
Beklof NE (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2112 monitoring: confirmed Sunday
November 14 from 2100 on IRRS SW via Italia AM, 918 kHz, Villa
Estense, S9+10 into nearby Noale KiwiSDR. 2058 music, 2100 timepips

Also confirmed UT Monday November 15 at 0030 on WRMI 7730, S9+5/20

Also confirmed UT Mon Nov 15 at 0130 on WRMI 9395, only S3 into
Missouri SDR and not making it to Manitoba.

Also confirmed UT Mon Mov 15 from 0402 in Area 51 via WBCQ 6160-, S9
into Missouri SDR soon fading to S7, offset -55 Hz = 6159.945, LSB

ID, opens `Camp Constitution Radio` jingle and then another extraneous
spot commercial, this time for General Insurance Agency in Nashville,
and back to show. A different ad each week. I wonder if YouTube have
something to do with this, inserting seemingly totally unrelated ads

** BOTSWANA. 9775, Nov 14 at 0252, S9-S6 of open carrier. Must be VOA
warming up for scheduled 0300-0500 English (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** EGYPT. 9900-, Nov 13 at 2125, R. Cairo, S9+30 into UTwente but dead
air except for some hum and possible traces of English modulation. AM
Synch mode says ``not locked`` in red, yet reads out carrier at
9899.687; still the same at 2213. And similar results by other
monitors (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** FRANCE. 17800+, Nov 14 at 1517, Minitransat special still going 2
days after original finish, météo in French by OM, then YL in French
with rankings deuxième, troisième, etc., etc.

17800-DRM, Nov 14 at 1722, YL again with lo-fi 8.08 kbps rankings in
French, mixing in numbers in English, via Maryland SDR, SNR 21 dB,
S9+5 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2112 monitoring: confirmed Saturday
November 13 at 2030 on WA0RCR, 1860-AM, MO, S9+10 into nearby SDR,
already 25 minutes into so started way early circa 2005.

Also confirmed UT Sunday Nov 14 at 0030 on WRMI 5950, S9+25 into
Knoxville SDR at one-hour-later time; also on separate System still at
0030 UT Sun Nov 14 on WRMI 7730, VG direct.

Also confirmed UT Sun Nov 14 finally at 0505 on WA0RCR, 1860-AM, MO,
S9+12 into nearby SDR, about 17 minutes into so started late circa
0448. So there is no correlation between the two airings as to
earliness/lateness. It all depends on variable-length ham shows in
between.

** U S A. 5950, UT Sun Nov 14 at 0100, WRMI with Texas Radio Shortwave
carrying Europirate R. Jingle Bells, as we *just can`t wait* for
Xmasmx. Was erroneously publicized for one hour earlier, which would
have pre-empted `Wavescan` & WOR but they/we were still on. Another
TRSW hour from 0200, Thanksgiving-themed. Too bad there is such a
pileup of music shows at same 01 hour Saturday evenings, e.g. `TOUTA`
on WTWW, `Encore` on WRMI 5850 & 7780, and `Mighty KBC` on Nauen.
Supposedly also prime time for pirates but I don`t hear any in one
quick scan of the 4+, 5+ and 7- MHz piratareas (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** U S A. 5085, UT Sun Nov 14 at 0053, WTWW-2 starting `Theatre Organ
Under The Arch`, so I switch immediately to $ tereo webcast. Another
tribute to George Wright ``the greatest theater organist``. Or is it
a repeat? Bob Heil says he has been working on this for some time,
including early recordings of GW`s performances and voice. This one
lasts 59 minutes until 0152 jarringly back into hard-sell Tedads and
hamstuff (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 5050, Nov 14 at 0056, WWRB weekend-only gospel huxters are
still on 59m, another week into B21 season when 93m would be expected;
and 0239 still going at S9+45 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 7520, Nov 14 at 0249, VP S5-S3 hymn, // TOMBS on 7570, 7730
etc. 7520 is WWCR-4 now at 00-03. This transmitter on 5890/9980/7520
is 24/7 TOMBS except for Tue-Sat 03-05 other gospel huxters (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 9975, Nov 14 at 0253, KVOH with jazz at S9/+30. New sked
http://www.voiceofhope.com/schedule/kvoh_program_grid.pdf
shows Pat Conrad`s `Jazz Session` gets only this one hour per week, UT
Sun 0200-0300; followed by 0300 `Wavescan` which also airs UT Tue.
Total 9975 span is 02-07 except UT Mon (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 1130, Nov 14 at 1757 UT, still S9+20 of dead air from KLEY,
Wellington KS. 250 watts, left on 24 hours despite night license for
ONE WATT -- a joke in itself. Last time I checked was Oct 29, no doubt
silent since and before. If they are keeping their 100.3 translator
which I can`t hear, modulated as ``The Wave``, why is it too much
trouble to mod the original AM, no one cares? BTW, I notice that MW
club editors keeping up with station news have ignored my continuing
reports about this strange situation (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98-RCUSB, Sat Nov 13 at 1541, NO LRA36 signal
into two Brasil Kiwi SDRs. Checked as soon as local power outage was
rapidly fixed by OG&E after one hour (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA. 401-MCW kHz, Nov 13 at 0723 UT, NDB dash and YPO, 500 watts
from Peawanuck, Ontario.

376-MCW kHz, Nov 13 at 0730, NDB dash and YAG, 40 watts from Fort
Frances ON. Only two somewhat unusual but not new Canadians during
bandscan above 375, see USA for more. Last log of YAG this year:

``376-MCW, Feb 17 at 0737 UT, dash and YAG is JBA, 40 watt NDB from
Fort Frances, Ont. 1407 km = 874 stmi or 21.85 miles per watt`` (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** FRANCE. 17800+, Nov 13 at 1541, S9-S7 music off-frequency, so
Minitransat special broadcasts via TDF Issoudun from 1500, are still
going past originally registered end-date of Nov 12.

17800-DRM, Nov 13 at 1707 via Maryland remote, French meteo by OM
voice, S9/+10, SNR 22 dB. Label reads starting with 1 AAC (1000)
meaning Service #1 of 4, not IAAC as I miswrote last time. By 1713 now
it`s YL in English but very heavy French accent. 1747 still on but not
decoding S5, and SNR of 5.9 dB. How much longer? (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** MEXICO. 800, Nov 13 at 0705, full ID from XEROK, 50 mil vatios,
Ciudad Juárez, address, Grupo 7, etc., dominant on E-W longwire, an
unusual situation vs KQCV, PJB and CKLW (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NEWFOUNDLAND [and non]. 2598-USB, Nov 13 at 0743 UT, RoboYL in
English with gale warnings for Northern Grand Banks. Per
DXinfocentre.com, first broadcast of the day on 2598 starts at 0737
from VCP-4, 3000 watts at Placentia. That`s 4:07 am NST.

2749-USB, Nov 13 at 0744, same RoboYL voice but unusually much weaker
tho closer, VCO, 550 watts from Sydney NS, first broadcast of day
starting at 0740 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 388 kHz, see USA beacon logs for one Okie, OK

** U S A. A quiet night with no Blitz storms across N America, so
digging deep into the beacon band, Nov 13 at 0717 until 0732 UT when a
local noise source cut on curtailing my bandscan below 376 kHz:

419-MCW kHz, Nov 13 at 0711 UT, NDB GB which is 25 watts from Great
Bend KS. I was tuned to 417-USB. Not very far but first time heard.

412-MCW kHz, Nov 13 at 0713 UT, NDB CMY, 30 watts from Sparta / Fort
McCoy WI. I was tuned to 410-USB. Last logged Jan 27, 2021.

408-MCW kHz, Nov 13 at 0715 UT, NDB JDM, 25 watts from Colby /
Wheatfield KS. My previous log from 2020y bears repeating:

``408-MCW kHz, Oct 18 at 0643 UT, JDM, 25-watt NDB at Colby -
Wheatfield, Kansas. One wonders how a call with no connexion to the
listed location came about? So I try searching on JDM Colby, finding
``Colby Howard Lands at JD Motorsports For Majority of 2020 ``
about NASCAR - that`s a stretch! Further down are linx to JDM as
NAVAID, but no call significance. Even further down, there is a JDM
Enterprises, LLC, in Colby among 55 other places:
https://opencorporates.com/companies/us_ks/8804627
but what does it do?`` Do they have a private airstrip in Colby?

392-MCW kHz, Nov 13 at 0724 UT, NDB FMZ, 25 watts at Fairmont / Beklof
NE.

388-MCW kHz, Nov 13 at 0725 UT, NDB OK, 25 watts at Okmulgee OK. I was
tuned to 386-USB.

383-MCW kHz, Nov 13 at 0726 UT, NDB CNP, 25 watts at Chappell NE. It`s
in SW NE on I-80 between Ogallala and Sidney near the NE corner of
CO.

378-MCW kHz, Nov 13 at 0728 UT, random dits, occasional dahs or longer
dash, as if a very out-of-order beacon. Like previous log:

``UNIDENTIFIED. 378 kHz, Oct 22 at 0620 UT, NDB bandscan finds
intermittent dashes, dits and dahs. Sounds like an NDB but very out of
order. If really on 378, dxinfocentre.com lists only four, in BC, OR,
QC and NU, none very likely here. classaxe.com has only the three
Canadians, with OR and several more marked out, and none of them, then
or now noted with any problem like this. It`s still possible this was
a local device previously unnoticed. Anyone else hearing thus?``

7490.00, Nov 12 at 2228, WBCQ during `Behaviour Night`, notice that
it`s almost ON-frequency! Someone must have nudged it...
