Glenn Hauser log roundup February 9-16, 2023  View Printable Version
Thursday, February 16 2023

Logs

Please note and spread the word - for those not on a list where my almost-daily all-band but mainly SW log reports appear -- or for those who are but find this a more convenient archive, weekly merged roundups of all these reports in their original form are posted early every UT Thursday via:

http://www.worldofradio.com/Hauserlogs.html

The latest one direct:
https://www.w4uvh.net/ghlogs_2023_0209_0216.txt

{in case you wonder why this week had 8 days, as occasionally happens,
one last Feb 15 log, Antarctica, ran over into UT Feb 16}

73, Glenn Hauser

Glenn Hauser logs February 15-16, 2023  View Printable Version
Thursday, February 16 2023

Logs
** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98 RC USB, Wed Feb 15 at 1555, no signal from
LRA36 during its former and future? regular broadcast time; into
Argentine SDR, I let it run for half a sesquihour or so anyway, with
nothing.

BUT there it is with music prélude? at 1951 tnx to tip from Horacio
Nigro, when I don`t have time to follow it much further. 1954 RAE ATTW
multi-lingual IDs, back to songs.

From 2151 I`m back on it, mostly music at S9/+12. Maybe it`s the new
temporary 1 kW transmitter they were expecting to improve reception at
higher power than before. 2204 an ID and seeming live saludos to
Marambio Base. 2230 another check direct: no trace of it. Back to Arg
remote: Still going with rather frenetic music at 2252, 2300; 2327 ID
for LRA36, music.

UT Feb 16 at 0007, RAE IDs amid more and more music. 0016 again
greeting Marambio Base including individuals by name, various sectors
there, and mentioning guests from Colombia. Apparently Esperanza is
very grateful for something from Marambio. 0024 plugs the Panorama
Nacional newscast from RNASG the entire month of January on the
Nacional net, somewhat outdated. I notice some hum surges during
pauses between talk and more music until finally chopped off at 0027*
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KIRITIMATI. 846 kHz, Feb 15 at 0739, JBA carrier from R. Kiribati,
and no other 9/kHz splits. Gary Pence had detected it earlier at 0404
via Oahu SDR (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NIGERIA. 7255-, Feb 15 at 0757, off-frequency carrier still
detectable from VON, aside better 7260 Vanuatu, q.v. (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 9690, Wed Feb 15 at 2302, token English from SNR/REE is
S9+20/35 of DEAD AIR on N American frequency for the entire semihour
and beyond. Something`s nonsensical at Noblejas. The other three
frequencies are nominal, 11685, 11940; and 12030 best and quite
sufficient S9+10/20 despite off the back from ME beam into Maryland
SDR. 2308 recheck already interviewing an author of historical fixion
explaining what`s true and what`s not. Then about a `virtual museum`
he runs, ending with web reference mucain.com which stands for MUseo
CArrera INdias --- that should be a lot more interesting to explore
than the interview. 2328 Hélena concludes with a song (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR) See also TAIWAN

** TAIWAN. 9690, Wed Feb 15 at 1628, singing in Chinese? VP with
flutter, cuts off at 1629* but shortly back on a bit to 1630* off
again. Noted since this would QRM SPAIN when its N American service
starts at *1500 weekends. Aoki shows at 1600-1630, Furusato no Kaze in
Japanese, clandestine for N Korea, via Paochung site; 9690 also at
1500-1600 CRI in Bengali via Kunming (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY [and non]. 5960.001+, Feb 15 at 2305, VOT VG S9+40 into
UTwente, on the air for English hour. Recheck 2316 outro ``Whipping
Files`` or whatever it`s called. 2317-2325 `Weekly Commentary` by a
guest with an Arabish name, denouncing racism and anti-Islam in
France, making fun of EQ victims in Charlie-Hebdo cartoons. Read by a
VOT announcer and inviting other outsiders to contribute.

I`m trying to monitor Antarctica and Spain at same time, back and
forth via different remotes. 2329 has started a talk about when and
whether to wear shoes --- yes, per 2334 outro it`s been `Feeling
Supreme/The Healing Spring`; then music, no more features caught until
2354 s/off with full English sked, fragment of IS and 2355* off
uncovering the CCCCCCI from Urumqi, std denunciation. It starts at
5960.000+ then creeps up beyond .001+ (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2177 monitoring: confirmed UT Wednesday
February 15 at 0030 on WRMI 9395, S9+20/28 into Missouri SDR.

Also confirmed Wednesday February 15 at 2202 the 2200 on WBCQ 7490-,
S6/S7 direct. Next:

0130 UT Thursday WRMI 9395 to NNW
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S

One may also contribute by MO or check on a US bank to:
Glenn Hauser, P O Box 1684, Enid, OK 73702 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [non]. 9455, Feb 15 at 1630, WRMI missing unlike 9395 with
TOMBS only S5/S6 and steady; rather S6/S9 algo with heavy flutter,
i.e. RFA Chinese via SAIPAN sked per Aoki M/W/F only at 1600-1700,
and/or CNR1 jammer. WRMI 9455 is supposedly 24/7 (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** VANUATU. 7260, Feb 15 at 0756, VP S8/S9 talk from R. Vanuatu, but
better than usual; and still no 7890 or 11835 from no 3945 (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 9025 AM, Feb 15 at 1632 in routine bandscan, surprised
to encounter President John F. Kennedy`s inaugural address, one of the
great speeches of history, mentions ``first 100 days`` and immortal
phrases like ``let us never fear to negotiate``, but cut off air
abruptly at 1636.6*.

Sounds like could be a regular broadcast transmitter, and S9/S6, even
stronger than 9395 WRMI at S5/S6. I soon find that this has been
previously reported almost exactly one year ago on Feb 18, 2022,
suspected of being US military rather than a pirate:
https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,93157.msg297341.html#msg297341

Like then, this keeps cutting on for 5 minutes or so, breaks off for 5
minutes or so. JFK certainly deserves more respect! FWIW, further
on/off approx. timings, but this gets old rather quickly: *1652-1657*,
*1702-1707* including 1703 ``Ask not what your country can do for
you...``; end of speech 1704, ``God`s work must truly be our own``,
brief outro by another voice, or rather intro and restarted.
*1712-1717*, *1723-1727*, *1732-1737.5*, *1742.5-1747.5* then some
``running water``; *1752.7-?, *1802.8-1805, restart; *1812.8-?; 1817.5
another restart with Chet Huntley? voice intro, but soon cut off
again. *1823-; 1845 recheck still going; and *1903.5 and 1923 yet
again.

I notified the WOR iog and it seems I am getting it better than in
Michigan or Maryland. I switched from direct to the Missouri remote
for convenience at *1652, hitting S7 and only 3 or 4 Hz
off-frequency-minus (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
