Friday, February 24 2023
** BRAZIL. 5940.030, Feb 23 at 0444, JBA carrier, presumed current variation of R. Voz Missionária (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** CHINA [non]. 5910, UT Thu Feb 23 at 0445, Western familiar classical piano and orchestral music, break for announcement in Cantonese; until 0455 sign-off announcement. CGTN Radio via CUBA, S9+40/50. Hardly expected but another candidate for Alan Roe`s Music on Shortwave (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 4765, Feb 23 at 0434, no signal from R. Progreso. Is it ever on any more? I don`t often check during its limited nominal span, 0130-0500. 5040, RHC evenings also absent most or all of the time including now. 6165, Feb 23 at 0638, weak S8/S9 algo talk, NOT RHC as not // 6000 English. Lots of other 6165 usage but in EiBi & Aoki nothing now, the closest being NHK Arabic via France until 0620. What could this be? RHC Spanish on exciter power? The Other Side: ``READ TODAY THE CUBA OF TOMORROW February 22, 2023 BASEBALL The best thing a baseball player can do to help the sport in Cuba is emigrate In Cuba, athletes cannot prosper or progress in their athletic disciplines. YUSIMÍ RODRÍGUEZ LÓPEZ | Madrid Luis Robert, one of the Major League Baseball players on the Cuban team. (MLB) A player who wishes to bolster the results of Cuban baseball at international tournaments should emigrate. Leaving, and as young as possible, should be considered by the regime as the most patriotic thing an athlete can do for what is still Cuba's national sport. Cuba cannot meet its athletes' economic aspirations, let alone their aspirations for freedom, or those or of any of its citizens, nor can it provide them with the chance to improve in their respective disciplines. The level of baseball in Cuba has hit rock bottom. What happened at the Gran Caracas Caribbean Series 2023 is just the latest evidence of this. It was not enough to create a selective tournament to bring together the best players from the National Series....`` https://diariodecuba.com/deportes/1676917648_45347.html (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA [and non]. 5800, Feb 23 at 0455, weak pulse jamming against nothing: because WRMI briefly? admittedly put R. República here before 0400, thus ruining another frequency forever. Current websked is contradictory: System B mostly feeding 9955 is shown on 5800 this 0400-0500 hour only with `Freedom Synergy Radio` daily; while System H also shows 5800 at 04-05 with Prague in English, Spanish - all of this missing! Now on the WRMI program info page you will find *no* mention of F.S.R.; nor R. República even on the System sked pages. 17 months ago I said, ``Freedom Synergy Radio, the dispensable Falungong anti-PRC show``. 9490.07, Feb 23 at 0456, weak carrier here as if the Issoudun, FRANCE transmitter of RMI`s Radio República still be on, typically off-frequency. Persistent jamming is also often audible here some hours later (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 11760, Feb 23 at 0747, S9+20 of dead air, no doubt RHC not turned off long after-hours. Ivo Ivanov says it was in English until 0700. Something`s always wrong at RHC. Think of how many undernourished Cubans could have had hearty meals for the cost of all that wasted electrical fluid; not to mention all the jammers against nothing or something (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** KIRITIMATI [and non]. 846 kHz, Feb 23 at 0503, JBA carrier already from R. Kiribati. Not usually do I check this early but it is well after Xmas I sunset. Gary Pence, KM5X had it on the Oahu SDR by 0423. Only other 9/kHz split for me at 0503 is the slow beat between two Spaniards on 855. Recheck at 0731, still 846, only (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 344 MCW kHz, Feb 23 at 0736 UT, JBA mixture of ND beacons JA and JL, at slightly different pitches; no problem separating by USB tuning 342 from 341 local EI, and its mixer, OIN, OberlIN KS. JA is 400 watts from JAxonvil FL, over a kilomile away, a rare distance among US beacon DX here; while JL is 25 watts from nearerby JopLin MO (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2178 monitoring: ``From: Richard Lemke, St. Albert, Alberta, Canada, the desk of Richard’s listening Post, Radio: JRC NRD-535 HF, Antenna: random long wires in the trees, Dear Glenn: Confirming World of Radio #2178, WRMI: 9395, 0130, 0150 (55433), S9 signal, 0159, February 23 UTC, 2023 [Thu] (Lemke, Richard -AB)`` Also confirmed UT Thursday February 23 at 0130 on WRMIs: 5010, S9+10 into Maryland SDR; 9395, S9+30 into Missouri SDR but with SSB QRM, probably local ham overload. Official Feb sunset for KDWN is 0115 UT when it should switch from 25 kW ND day, to 7.5 kW direxional night protecting WGN. The current terminator/grayline at 0100 is circa the AZ/NM border, so skywave propagation eastward ought to be starting soon if not already. Reverse at 1430 UT sunrise not explored yet, unless I happen to awaken by then. This is in preparation for the DX special, UT Wed March 1 at 0759-0809 UT when KDWN CE has agreed to run 25 kW test at night one last time, but unknown whether will be ND. In order to help other easterners DX that, I suggested to the CPC that WGN could be asked to turn itself off for that brief period --- that was met with derision and insults on the IRCA iog, tho a few brave DXers backed my out-of-the-box idea. I myself do not `need` to DX KDWN, as I have logged it before such as in *2015y*, when it was suspected of not following the rules: ``720, Sept 20 at 1213 UT, ``Live in Las Vegas`` talk show from ``K-Dawn``, 257-5396 = KDWN, also asking for tweets, on subject Syria could become a proxy war between USA and Russia. Really, live call-in at 5 am Sunday --- I guess so in a city that never sleeps. Per gaisma.com, today`s real dawn in LV doesn`t start until 1301 UT, and sunrise at 1327. Enid`s sunrise is 1218 UT. Better signal here than on 840 KXNT which I got first prompting me to try 720. Once again, not in keeping with KDWN night pattern of a cardioid null toward WGN, rather than ND day pattern; or do I enjoy a propagational pipeline from LV NV? See also 1140 UNID (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)`` Aside from the `pure DX` loss of a chance to hear NV in the East, I say good riddance, as their program sked shows far-right-liar Sean Hannity in prime time and another Faux host, Brian Kilmeade. The other names I do not recognize, maybe locals and I bet not one of them the least bit `liberal`. However, Stephen Luce comments as of Feb 23: ``Although KDWN and KXST are going silent, the licenses have not yet been surrendered. Still a small possibility one or both could be resurrected under new ownership. Whether it makes any business sense to do so is up for debate. Stephen Luce, Houston, Texas`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2179) ** U S A. 1130 kHz, Feb 23 at 0732 UT, open carrier atop KWKH, no doubt KLEY Wellington KS by groundwave, same as pre-sunset. Also some music, from a 3rd station? Or maybe KLEY JBM (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** VANUATU. 7260, Feb 23 at 0800, R. Vanuatu, S8/S9 talk but unreadable; and no VON neighboring on 7255- (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) UNIDENTIFIED. 9510, Feb 23 at 0757, again that open carrier except for some hum, S5/S6 fading and some split-second breaks (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) This report dispatched at 0216 UT February 24 _ Hard-Core-DX mailing list Hard-Core-DX@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/hard-core-dx http://www.hard-core-dx.com/

** KIRITIMATI. 846 kHz, Feb 22 at 0743, JBA carrier from R. Kiribati. Checking Oahu SDR this date, Gary Pence, KM5X, reported: trace seen at 0741 but not at 0918. Wednesday has sometimes been an off-night for them (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** SPAIN. 9690, Wed Feb 22 at 2305, token English from SNR on subject which does not grab me, so I`m mainly hearing simulTURKEY, q.v. But all four frequencies are on in usual descending quality > 12030 > 11940 > 11685 into Maryland SDR. BTW, JRX in Paraíba says 9690 for NAm is better there than 11940 for SAm. At 2315 interview about a Badajoz carnaval and museum, and then about the same in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which she says is second only to the carnaval in Rio (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** TURKEY. 5960.003+, Feb 22 at 2301, VOT English makes in on air today unlike last two nights, VG S9+30/40 into UTwente; news mainly EQ stats such as official death toll now at 42,310. 2311 `Review of Turkish Press` ending, also about that. 2312 promo acknowledging S&R teams from abroad. 2313 `Whipping Piles` (?) about AI, such as a painting program, Canvas. 2318 `Weekly Commentary` about PKK terrorists [or sometimes sounds more like tourists] by heavily-accented YL, and now she also has the CCCCCCI from XJPBS, std denunciation, to cope with; criticising PKK for continuing to carry out attax despite the EQ damage. 2324 outro inviting anyone to submit their opinions by email for possible broadcast, and credit for this one by name and institution totally unreadable. Music break until 2333 `Feeling Supreme/The Healing Spring`, something about an anti-oxidant supplement involving the liver; 2340 bit of theme music but continues with more of same till 2342, then music break. After 2330 I`m mainly attending NBC Afternoonly News. 2352 squeezes in the multi-lingual ID filler reel, but chopped off the air at 2353.7* amid Swahili before completed; so we don`t even get any standard s/off or IS. Opening frequency for XJPBS now in the clear. Something`s always erroneous at Emirler (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 365 MCW kHz, Feb 22 at 0747 UT, AA, 100-watt ND beacon at Fargo / Harwood ND: only somewhat unusual one now (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 28243 CW, Feb 22 at 2134, EEEEEEEE DE WA6APQ/B, only one of many in the 10m hambeacon subband; per WI5V.net --- 28.244 WA6APQ C LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA # 30W, VERTICAL. --- QRZ.com: ``WA6APQ flag USA, DEWEY MYERS, 2903 Monogram Ave, LONG BEACH, CA 90815 - The WA6APQ BEACON on 28.2440 MHz is located on a 330 foot hill (Signal Hill) in Long Beach, California. Radio is a Motorola Mitrek consolette base station, 30 watts, antenna is Antron 99 vertical. Code speed is approx. 10 wpm and operates 24/7. Since 1993. If you would like a beacon QSL card, send SASE or SAE with $ 1.00 (no IRC's) or email for a printable QSL card. Include the standard (RST) signal report, UTC time and date. Audio/Video and Youtube recordings are welcome. Thank you for looking.`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2178 monitoring: ``From: Richard Lemke, St. Albert, Alberta, Canada, the desk of Richard’s listening Post, Radio: JRC NRD-535 HF, Antenna: random long wires in the trees, Dear Glenn: Confirming World of Radio #2178, WRMI: 9395, 0030, 0044, 0059 (55433), 0059, February 22 UTC 2023 [Wed] (Lemke, Richard -AB) Also confirmed UT Wednesday February 22 at 0030 on WRMI 9395, S9+10/20 direct. Missed checking Wed Feb 22 at 2200:21 on WBCQ 7490v; anyone hear it? Next: 0130 UT Thursday WRMI 9395 to NNW 0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S Full schedule including AM, FM, webcasts, satellite, podcasts: http://www.worldofradio.com/radioskd.html Like our website, a noncommercial service for which financial support is appreciated. Thanks this week to Joe Caberlin, VE1EJ, Ontario for some US$ and a book to Glenn Hauser, PO Box 1684, Enid OK 73702 USA One may also contribute by MO or cheque on a US bank to above address; or via PayPal, not necessarily in US funds, to woradio at yahoo.com (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 1130, Feb 22 at 2139 UT, dead air at S7 from KLEY Wellington KS, still so at 2208; and at 2255 when an understation has become audible, no doubt KWKH. This shows you how seriously Rocking M Media takes its broadcasting business. Long spans of dead air or off-air have happened several times before. I wonder if their 100.3 translator still modulate; doesn`t reach here. BTW, radio-locator.com shows there is another KLEY on FM 95.7 in Jourdanton TX, presumably unrelated; as FCC abandoned the idea of unique callsigns years ago if both parties agreed to share. KLEY in KS has a sibling station on 1550 in nearby Winfield, KKLE where I am not hearing it; had been reactivated at least briefly some months ago // 1130 instead of two different formats. 1130 carrier normally runs all night, modulated or not, obviously 250 watt day power instead of one watt at night, to detriment of KWKH which obviously does not care (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** VANUATU. 7260, Feb 22 around 0730, RV JBA here as usual, and no 7255- Nigeria (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) UNIDENTIFIED. 9700, Feb 22 at 0726, S9+10 dead air and quite steady. Currently a RNZP frequency not scheduled in Aoki & EiBi until *1651 much later; while 13755 is in well. Neither caught it that 9700 has axually been heard as early as 1400 Feb 10, // 7390. Possibly a #2 NZ transmitter test, but suspect RHCuba instead, while no other usual frequencies are still on. Aoki reminds us Turkey here until 0656, EiBi until 0700 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) UNIDENTIFIED. 25975 LSB, Feb 22 at 2127, Brazilian 2-way; 26305.3 AM, Feb 22 at 2131, 2-way in English. I`m scanning the 11mb portion 25800-26500 for any NBFM broadcast auxiliaries like KOVR`s on 26110, hitting nothing but these two (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) This report dispatched at 0122 UT February 23 _ Hard-Core-DX mailing list Hard-Core-DX@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/hard-core-dx http://www.hard-core-dx.com/

** GERMANY [non]. 15215, Feb 21, 2023, *1559.5 cut on with Radio Öömrang opening annual broadcast via FRANCE. S7/9+5 into Maryland SDR. First in German, then English as 500 kW at 5-6 pm local time, for expats in NYC, where more Frisians now live than on the original island. 1602 German; as to be expected mostly in German supposedly with some Frisian mixed in, and occasional English announcements such as 1619, with contact info, produxion and funding credits. I reminded the WOR group about this at 1558, and reports from all over N America ensued. At 1638 I check it direct to OK: S9/+10 with some deep fades.
Of course, the non-fluent in German or Frisian can`t get much out of it, and to make matters worse, totally oblivious to this annual event, Pres. Biden made his big speech in Warsaw around 1640, drawing us away. At 1656 repeat English about credits and contacts, into German but chopped off air at 1658* before can finish. Hansjoerg Biener in Germany provided the WOR iog with this background: ``Öömrang Special Broadcast: What did you listen to? Since 2006, Amrum native Arjan Koelzow has sponsored an annual shortwave broadcast aimed at the global community of Amrum exiles, particularly those in New York. (The most recent wave of emigration was after World War II.) The broadcasts started via Juelich but were transferred to Wertachtal in 2009 and later to Issoudun (France) as in this year: Tuesday, February 21, 2023, 1600-1700 h UTC: 15215 kHz (Issoudun 500 kW, 300°) The broadcast coincides with a local festival, the Biikebrennen. At https://www.ndr.de/ratgeber/reise/nordseekueste_sh/Biikebrennen-2023-Wo-die-Feuer-an-der-Nordsee-lodern,biikebrennen4.html you will find the following information about the custom: "The Biikebrennen is seen as the oldest remaining North Frisian custom. It was originally a pagan ritual, and Christian missionaries tried to end the custom around the 10th century. However, the Biikebrennen continued as a cheerful carnival celebration. Therefore, it had to take place before the start of Lent. [So, it is celebrated on St. Peter’s Day now.] At first there were no large piles of wood burning [as in other German midwinter or midsummer customs], but individual fires on long poles. A straw doll, the pider, often went up in flames too. This particular custom has survived in some places to this day. Later the Biiken burned to drive away the winter. [...] Since the 19th century, the Biike fires have also been a symbol of the North Frisians' sense of togetherness and sense of tradition. Children use the festivals to play pranks on adults. In some places, they even have no school the next day, St. Peter's Day in honor of the fishermen's patron saint. In 2014, UNESCO registered Biikebrennen in the national register of cultural heritage.” At the beginning of the 2023 programme, it was announced that it would run parallel to Biikebrennen; but the NDR information gave the Amrum time for Biikebrennen as 1800 h local time (1700 h UTC). This year the programme was mostly in German with some Frisian interspersed. The content of the word oriented programme included old stories from Amrum (e.g. the finding and hiding of a 200-liter barrel of rum in early World War II. Later in the war, the authorities hit back at the local population: If you can recover and hide items washed ashore, you can also recover dead bodies of seamen and airmen.), but also interviews with pupils and teachers of the Öömrang-Skuul. Particularly interesting was the tale of a cultural clash of its own kind when a Amrum school class visited another school class on the mainland. In all seriousness, someone asked whether electricity and television were already available on Amrum. (Dr Hansjoerg Biener)`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** TURKEY [and non]. 5910, continued from last report, of TRT EQ coverage in Turkish on the IRDR frequency placeheld by SMG Vatican site, in clear before 0100 but what about the CCI as registered afterwards, UT Feb 21: *0058 via Maryland SDR, classical musiQRM cuts on from RRI, S9+10 atop TRT, shows 0 Hz offset; but via UTwente it`s +004 Hz making heavy SAH, RRI also atop. 0100 RRI opening Romanian for NAm. But how will they compare in the EQ area? Closest KiwiSDR is Cyprus, so I get on that by 0120: S9+25 TRT atop with yelling and other noises outside any studio. By 0200 the CCI is very heavy. 0215 at Maryland SDR, RRI is atop the CCI as to be expected. At 0301 now Romania is off but CRI English via Cuba is on: At Cyprus weak S6/S7 algo, TRT off earlier than 0400? No, at UTwente, TRT still heard at .004, S9+25 with sirens; at Maryland, only CRI is heard at 0301. By 0400 no 5910 signal into Cyprus (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** TURKEY [non]. 5960, Tuesday Feb 21 at 2258, BBC WS English via OMAN until 2259* leaving nothing well past 2300. Neither VOT nor XJPBS comes on. Recheck 2312, now Chinese from EAST TURKISTAN, std denunciation, has appeared: rarely does it start right at 2300. Monitored UTwente in background rest of hour and never any show by TRT again tonight. Something`s always erroneous at Emirler (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 347 MCW kHz, Feb 21 at 0226, AFK, 25-watt ND beacon at Nebraska City NE. 349 RG OKC is still OFF, so at 0753 I detect algo on 349, just too weak to copy. But DXinfocentre has only one US station listed, 25 watt GW in GreenWood MS - and only one other anywhere, 1E in Black Tickle! NL, 25 watts.
