** CANADA. Some dashing ND beacons making it thru Jan 21 at 0803-0808
UT: 362 MCW kHz, SB, 500 watts at Greater Sudbury, Ont; 340 MCW kHz,
YY, 500 watts at Mont Joli, Québec; and 276 MCW kHz, YEL, 200 watts at
Elliot Lake, Ontario, to be decommissioned Jan 27! Just in time (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 5962-5995 & 6010-6048 approx., Jan 21 at 0715, splatter range
of jammers against nothing on 5980, 6030; worse than usual marring
5970 WEWN, almost 5995 Mali, etc. Something`s always wrong at the
incompetent DentroCuban Jamming Command (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. Jan 21 at 0717, all RHC frequencies are off: 5040, 6000,
6060, 6100, 9700. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** PALAU. 9965, Fri Jan 21 at 0800, I am unfortunately awake and find
something here with gospel rock song, S9+10, fades to S5. Got to be
T8WH or whatever its true callsign be now. EiBi shows:

9965 0805-0835 Mo-Tu USA Hope Radio 5 E FE /PLW
9965 0805-0850 We-Fr USA Hope Radio 5 E FE /PLW
9965 0810-1220 Su USA Hope Radio 5 E FE /PLW
9965 0840-0935 Sa USA Hope Radio 5 E FE /PLW

So it`s Palaw? Aoki shows a much more convoluted schedule attempting
to account for music breaks and individual program names, but not
before 0807, and as late as -1135 on Sundays. HFCC shows 9965
available 24 hours for ``HBN``, 100 kW at 345 degrees in English or
Mandarin (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 198 MCW kHz, Jan 21 at 0812 UT, ND beacon DIW, 2000 watts at
Dixon, North Carolina; take that, BBC Radio 4! with 600 kW. I never
detect Euro LW BC stations, and seldom any beacons this low. Axually
it`s sending DI W --- with a pause long enough for another letter to
be inserted! Out of order? Neither Hepburn nor RNA Signals List make
any note of this, something new? Dixon is an insignificant place with
zero population, south of Jaxonvil, not quite on the coast; not even
indexed in a standard atlas (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. Still noise peak circa 400 kHz, circa 0802 UT January 21,
but on outskirts do manage to detect what used to be common: 417 MCW,
ND beacon IY, 25 watts from Charles cItY, Iowa. Also:

347 MCW kHz, Jan 21 at 0806 UT, AFK, 25 watt NDB at Nebraska City NE
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2122 monitoring: confirmed first
airings, UT Friday January 21 at 0130 on WRMIs: 5850 VG direct; 0142
chex of 7780: JBA at UTwente! JBA also at Maine SDR; JBA S5 at
Maryland SDR; JBA S4 at Missouri SDR; BUT, S9/+15 into new Aguadas,
Colombia SDR, and BBB steps on closing before I finish at 0159. 7780
is supposedly on NE 44 degree azimuth, yet only decent signal is
picked up from the south! On wrong/changed antenna? Or just
propagation? WWV reported at 0000:

``Solar-terrestrial indices for 20 January follow.
Solar flux 99 and estimated planetary A-index 5.
The estimated planetary K-index at 0000 UTC on 21 January was 1.
Space weather for the past 24 hours has been moderate.
Solar radiation storms reaching the S1 level occurred.
Radio blackouts reaching the R2 level occurred.
No space weather storms are predicted for the next 24 hours.``

Next airing at 0330 UT Friday January 21 on WRMI 5985: tune in at 0328
via Colombia, usual IS & ID loop until ``top of hour`` BBB assures us,
S9+35! As it should be, aimed south. But cuts off the air at 0328.5!
Timer is still running but I think instead this SDR has failed, black
screen. Quickly check others by 0331: JBA carrier S5/S7 into
Knoxville; also JBAC at Maryland, and still nothing at Colombia. At
0357 I can hear me direct at S6-S9, so 5985 WRMI is on the air.

Also confirmed Friday January 21 at 1530 on WRMI 9955, S9+10/20 direct
and no jamming audible. Incomprehensibly screaming Tourette`s Syndrome
gospel huxter Terry Blalock cut off at 1529 for a brief music respite
and ID before WOR. What a lead-in. Next:

** CANADA. My line noise peak around 400 kHz continues to block MCW
beacons, but propagation has improved enough to reaudiblize some Canux
on lower frequencies, Jan 20 at 0733: 346 dash and YXL, 500 watts from
Sioux Lookout, Ont; 335 dash and YLD, 1000 watts from Chapleau, Ont.;
332 dash and QT, 1000 watts from Thunder Bay, Ont.; 248, dash and WG,
1000 watts from Winnipeg, Man. (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 4747 & 4883 approx., Jan 20 at 0212, loud wideband scratchy
spurblobs out of 4765 R. Progreso, into Colombia SDR worse than heard
here before, but all cut off air at 0213* Something`s always wrong at
RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6060, Jan 20 at 0713, only RHC frequency left, the one with
humbuzz, S9/+10, English announcer pronounces it oh-MEE-kron,
apparently never having heard mainstream world media say the word,
always accented on first syllable, tho never agreeing on long or short
o. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 11760, Jan 20 at 1553, RHC #1 legacy frequency, S9/+10
distorted and breaking up; 9710 is also S9/+10 but just barely
modulated. Somethings` always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 11685, Jan 20 at 1554, open carrier and nothing on 11670;
can it be REE? Yes, starts earworm IS at 1555. The frequency for
Africa has been confusing, contradictory listings. Until now this B21
season I have consistently heard it on 11670. Something`s always
nonsensical at Noblejas (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2122)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2121 monitoring: confirmed UT Thursday Jan
20 at 0150 the 0130 on WRMIs: 5010 direct S9 = noise level; 9395 JBA
S4-S5. At 0154 to Maryland SDR: 5010 poor S5-S7, 9395 fair S7; to
Missouri SDR: 5010 S8, 9395 JBA. To new? SDR Aguadas in Colombia: 5010
VG S9+10/30 where it`s aimed but SDR way miscalibrated showing minus
502 Hz carrier! Heard 0159 WOR ending without truncation.

** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98 RCUSB, Jan 19 at 1526, LRA36 is on again this
Wednesday; I missed checking last week. Apparently RNASG continues
with weekly broadcasts, no complete summer hiatus. Songs at S4 into
Pardinho, Brasil SDR. 1531 full IDs, about to close around usual time?
No, songs resume; 1545 fades down; 1553 Antártida song and
announcements; 1556 Antda. song again, 1600 announcement, 1605 song.
Difficult copy, noise level about equal. Pardinho SDR drops out at
1613 so I switch to Campo which is getting it at same level; 1626 is
it off? No, JBA talk, but 1634 seems gone, cannot even detect a
reduced carrier.

In southern winter, local sunset could be a propagation factor, but
not now, per:
https://www.gaisma.com/en/location/esperanza--permanent-station-of-argentina.html
Today`s SR/SS in local time, which it claims is UT: 06:36-01:19. I`m
fairly sure they really = Argentime, which is UT -3, and no DST per
WRTH (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6060, Jan 19 at 0707, RHC is S9 of humbuzz only, no English.
6100 is S9+10/20 of dead air; 9700 is S9 of dead air; 5040 is S9+30
still on in Spanish. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauer, OK,
WOR)

** ITALY. At 1618 UT January 19, Alfredo Cotroneo of NEXUS/IBA/IRRS
notified me: ``Hi Glenn, We just received the formal authorization to
use 1323 kHz. We'll start testing as of tonight, and will drop 918
kHz. 73s, Alfredo``

Monitoring via nearby Noale SDR from 1655 tune-in, 918 is off. *1656,
1323 comes on at S9+10 over CCI, with English ID as if on 918, ``have
a nice listening``! Lots more off & on at lower and higher levels past
1708, testing. Specifically: music until 1658 when level drops to S6
but same music still audible; 1700 jumps to S9+10 again for talk in
Italian; 1702 cuts power again after mentioning Boris Johnson. 1704
back to full power, 1707 off, 1708 on; rechecking later with music
until 1758* cuts off uncovering two weak signals making SAH of about 6
Hz. 1800 back on in Italian at S9+5, now CCI from two audios. 1803
Feature Story News from IRRS, but CCI from equal level alternately
overtaking, in Hungarian! That has to the the minority language
service from Romania as listed. At 1806 I recheck 918 kHz and find it
is back on now at S9+10, // 1323 with FSN and over CCI presumed
Madrid. At 1815, Hungarian dominates 1323 and wonder if Italy be off
again.

Recheck much later, at 2255, 1323 is S9+10 with little QRM, 2258
Italian ID and timecheck as ``23:57``, a minute slow by CET. 918,
nominally closing by 2205* UT, bears nothing but Spain by now.

So this confirms AM Italia has two separate MW transmitters; WRTH 2022
shows 5 kW on 918, 1 kW on 1323.

1323 co-channel? listed in WRTH: two UKs of 20 and 500 watts; 50 kW
Iran in Azeri at 0030-2030; 15 kW from Romania, see if you can figure
out the schedule from page 334; 10 kW from Tanzania, 1500-1800 only
with CRI English relay; China with 9 stations totaling 1360 kW! plus
more minor stations in Asia and Pacific. Management must have expected
a net improvement in coverage by moving from 918 to 1323. For
groundwave of course, higher frequency and lower power assure reduced
coverage. Quite aside from the CCI and ACI situations. BTW, nothing
heard on LW 207.

1323 ex-918 will of course affect WORLD OF RADIO times: Fri 1915 &
2130, Sun 2100 UT (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 9690, Wed Jan 19 at 2317, token English from REE finally
airs a new irregular mailbag or ``DX program`` in progress, Justin Coe
responding to four listeners, all of them well-known to us --- small?
world; already in progress, first heard, Alan Roe as of Dec 19
requesting holiday program details to be publicized --- sorry, there
weren`t any and on Dec 25 and Jan 1, plugged into domestic RNE anyway.
Next from Bruce Li (Lee) in Australia with report requesting QSL --
I`ve also had a report from him. As to REE QSLing, Justin is still
looking into this ``pending issue``. Next from Alan Holder, Isle of
Wight with program requests/suggestions including about Spain being a
main miner of toxic mineral mercury. Then from John [``the VORW``]
Jurasek, Orlando FL, who mentions that he has been very sick with
COVID. Justin and we all hope he`s much better by now. A sesquiminute
of music fill until timesignal. Monitored at S9/+10, VG into Maryland
SDR. No telling when the next mbg will show up nor on which DOW. John
Figliozzi says it`s now titled `Radio Waves` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 5960, Jan 19 at 2316, quick check of VOT English into
UTwente: S9+25/30 but today`s transmitter is the one with horrible
squeal, detracting from the sufficient modulation level: starting
``Health Line``, but topic unclear. Something`s always erroneous at
Emirler. I quickly switch to loud & clear SPAIN, q.v. (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2121 monitoring: ``From: Richard

Confirmed Wednesday January 19 at 1030 on WRMI 5850, VG direct on the
PL-880 when I happen to awaken.

Attentive to Pres. Biden`s news conference, I missed checking Wed Jan
19 at 2200:21 on WBCQ 7490v --- but at 2237, NO signal on that
frequency, while 6160- and 9330.0 are confirmed. Also, at 2302, no
7490 into Maryland SDR, altho webcast is running. Did anyone hear WOR
before 2229:21 on 7490+? Next, and last:

** CUBA. 9700, Jan 18 at 0724, RHC English at S9 but JBM, only
frequency left. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** CUBA. 13761 & 13638 approx., Jan 18 at 1553, extremely distorted
spurblobs S3-S5 out of 13700 RHC which is S9+10. Trace of program
modulation on 13638. That`s plus and minus 61.5 kHz or so; then
checking for second-orders at twice that displacement, find 13577 at
minus 123 is also S3-S5 instead of significantly weaker. Can tell
there is one circa 13823, but obscured by 13820 Radio Martí and
jamming, tsk2. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** EGYPT. 9899.605, Jan 18 at 2114, R. Cairo is on again and failing
miserably, extremely distorted music via UTwente at S9/+20. 4+1
mis-timesignal for 2115:00 which I time ending at 2115:50, only a
fraxion of which could be due to internet delay; programming continues
unreadable past 2145. Something`s always egregious at Egypt (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 5960, Jan 18 at 2344, VOT English direct is S9/+10 with
flutter and somewhat undermodulated, but without the CCCCCCI which
infests it in Europe, with `Did You Know That?` feature. Without
further listening it`s impossible to know whether any program is
starting or ending since the same theme and title is played both for
intro and outro. 2354 the IS is playing; halts and restarts at 2356
now with two German IDs before 2357*, depriving masculine and feminine
KW-hearers of any more German which continues on the program feed line
für Nachteulen. Something`s always erroneous at Emirler and/or awry at
Ankara (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U K [non]. 6195, Jan 18 at *0259.5, BBCWS in English cuts on via
Masirah, OMAN, S5-S7, better than a weaker S3-S4 signal which cut off
a few seconds earlier: that was the same 250 kW site concluding
Dari/Pashto Afghanistan service at 35 degrees. The 03-04 hour is at
320 degrees, altho intended to go no further than Turkey. I`m checking
this out since I heard this from Doug Brown, Jan 15:

``It's been a long while since I've been able to enjoy BBC World
Service with armchair quality reception and at a convenient hour of
the day. But so I have been for the past week. We are now back at our
winter home in the Tampa Bay area of Florida, after a two year hiatus,
due to covid. I've been hearing BBC in English every evening from 0300
to 0400 GMT on 6195 KHZ. I don't know where their transmitter is
located or who their target audience is. But they're pounding in solid
here in the southeast US. Of course, we wouldn't want BBC to know that
anyone is listening here. They would shut it down. Best Regards, Doug
Brown, London ON / Seminole FL``

Checking on my NGS globe with geometer, guess what, 320 is aimed right
at Seminole. Oops! BBC is inadvertently broadcasting to North America.
6195 is a legacy BBC frequency, currently also employed at other hours
via Singapore, Säo Tomé and the Ascension part of Great Britain (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2121 monitoring: confirmed Tuesday
January 18 at 2344 the 2330 on WRMI 9955, S9+10 and no jamming
audible; but by 2357 recheck, now the noise is on and gaining for
total of S9+10, in time for Radio Libertad from 2400 which Must Be
Jammed to forestall any liberty in KYBA. Next:
