Hauser
** TURKEY [and non]. 5960, Feb 4 at 2321, VOT English is on the air,
S9+20 into UTwente, VG modulation level -- except also with that
horrible squeal, during music break, then intro some Analysis, 2325
multi-lingual ID loop filler which takes a couple minutes. Squeal is
constant pitch during pauses, but varies when `modulated`. Enough of
that. Try 9690 Spain at 2320 which is S9+25 into Virginia SDR, but
it`s a repeat of JC`s interview with musician J L Montón (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2124 monitoring: confirmed Friday
February 4 from 1915.4 on IRRS via AM Italia 1323 kHz, and via
Bulgaria 7290. Tuned via nearby Noale SDR, 1323 has QRM from Romania
HS in German; 7290 via UTwente has considerable ACI from 7295 CGTN
Radio in English via East Turkistan; standard denunciation. At 1917 I
try Carlow, Ireland SDR, which gets 7290 better at S6-S7, best tuning
SAL or AMN modes. 14580 harmonic not audible. Both 1323 and 7290 to
WOR completion at 1944. Tuning in earlier:

At 1854, 1323 is crescendo Ravel`s Bolero, not sure which station, but
I fear it will be interruptus before climax, and indeed I never hear
that by 1900. At 1859 there is CCI from other music, IRRS ID mix with
Hungarian concluding hour from Romania.

At *1858 on 7290, S-meter jumps a unit when Bulgacarrier oncomes. As
usual, no IRRS ID or sign-on but cut on modulation a bit before 1901
with `Feature Story News` already started, leading with Russia
expelling Deutsche Welle. And now heard on both asynchronously. 7290
already with QRM as above; 14580 not audible. 1323 with CCI in German
from Romania. Not on 918 or 207 kHz. 1908 music fill on both before
1915 IRRS ID and WOR.

Also confirmed WOR 2124 repeat Feb 4 at 2130 on 1323, now VG S9+12
with no QRM at Noale SDR. I guess Romania signs off at 2000 or 2100.

Also confirmed UT Saturday February 5 at 0230 on WRMI 9395, S7-S6 into
VE4KRK Winnipeg SDR, fading down to S5-S4 by 0245; so switch to KB0FX
SDR in Warrenton MO, good at S8-S9. I picke these because of NNW
azimuth. Next:

Our non-commercial broadcasts and website depend on voluntary
support. Thanks this week to Joe Caberlin, Port Colborne, Ontario for

** U S A. 4790-, Feb 5 at 0015, WBCQ with old tunes, soon announcing
as Behaviour Night, and at 0058 closing Sir Scratchy mentions 4790 so
a special edition. That`s normally on 7490 at 2200-2300 Fridays: this
is part of a 2300-0100 test this week for the music and other
entertainment shows planned as a regular 2-hour block from March,
``curated`` by Uncle Bill; but haven`t decided exactly which hours
will propagate best. It`s S9+10 but noisy here. From tomorrow for a
week the test hours will be 0000-0200 UT. The trouble is, spring storm
noise level will be constantly increasing, and darkness will be
latening, so an ideal? time in Feb will not necessarily apply in March
or April or beyond. Furthermore, what`s ideal will depend very much on
listeners` distance and direxion from Monticello.

Walt Salmaniw just posted to the WOR iog: ``4790 is a really poor
frequency choice on the west coast due to the very loud CODAR
interference across that part of the spectrum including 4790. They
should move 100 to 200 kHz higher. Heard this afternoon via Masset
SDR. Would have been fair/good except for CODAR. 73, Walt`` Here`s an
idea: WBCQ should puts its best programming on 250/500 kW 9330, not
its worst (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. (7490.1v), UT Sat Feb 5 at 0100, WBCQ webcast of `AAAWWW`,
new this week after one show thrice in January: coyly they don`t
explain why they missed two weeks, just ``busy``. Says it was
unusually hot in FL today, 86F. As always they interrupt and yell over
each other which is not pleasant for the bylistener. Usual far-right
digs such as referring to President Biden as ``the puppet``. ``Rachel
Maddow scares me`` --- good, that says a lot more about you than her.
``Whoopie Goldberg is ugly``. ``Don`t care if you`re purple``. WBCQ
should double its rates, losing money. Good news: some new programs
coming, a new music show Sat at 7-8 PET on 7490. Already carrying `The
Power Hour`, M-F at 11 am to 1 pm ET on 6160. Or did he mean 11 pm to
1 am?? If it were in 24-hour UT there would be no confusion! I suspect
that`s the original Power Hour with Joyce Riley scheduled around noon
by iHeart, not the podcast of the same name with Adrienne somebody?

More and more sunspots are being seen with their scope. Last night at
7:30 PET, 7490 & 9330 vanished from their FL monitors: it was a CME.
Trimulcasting now on 7490, 6160, 4790. I do a quick check of 4790 on
remote and confirm it`s still on, offset slightly minus. Then talks
about the 4790 tests and at 0123 Uncle Bill calls in about them. Will
feature pre-Nazi jazz, music from Finland, Brazil. 0130 reading an
article about radio ad sales going up in the industry. 0137 about old
music being popular among younger people today. Fantasizes that AM on
SW will become *the* medium for new music. 0145 James Careless` Radio
World article reviewing a couple of portable SW radios. 0147 something
about Canada. World Radio Day Feb 13 should be marked by some special
programs, but no details. (BTW I`ve been simulviewing the ChiCom
Olympic opening ceremonies.) 0155 reads pirate radio logs from new
Free Radio Weekly just in, edited by Larry Will. When edited by an
alternate, it`s never out till later on Saturday. One item is axually
credited to Mr Hauser. Some e-mailed reception reports. 0159 prayer,
0201 JIP Hal Turner late as usual. My best wishes to fellow AAAWWW
monitor John Carver, who has been sidelined/delayed by some health
issues (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6100, Feb 4 at 0710, RHC with dead air in English; also 6060
still on with humbuzz; 9700 is on but JBA, probably also DA; while
5040 is VG in Spanish. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** U S A. 257 MCW kHz, Feb 4 at 0717 UT, JYR, 25 watt ND beacon at
York, Nebraska. Whenever I log this, brings back memories of my total
solar eclipse expedition to that area, even tho I was not tuning it at
that time.

341 MCW kHz, Feb 4 at 0715 UT, in the continued absence of EI Enid,
25-watt OIN Oberlin KS is the usual sole NDB occupant, but now it`s
mixing with seldom-heard DNI, 25 watts at Sherman-Denison TX. Even
when EI was operative it was so weak that OIN could also be heard
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2124 monitoring: confirmed second
airing, UT Friday February 4 at 0337 the 0330 on WRMI 5985, aimed
south so as usual here JBA vs hi storm and line noise; but at 0343
also JBA to Argentina SDR, S5-S7 to Knoxville but line noise; S4-S6
but less noisy to Maryland; JBA S7-S9 to Missouri SDR; Colombia SDR
still receiving nothing; TWR Bonaire still missing; best I can find at
0348 turns out to be the J68HZ SDR in St. Lucia, S7-S9 and less noise
than elsewhere. Put on some sandals?

Also confirmed Friday February 4 at 1530 on WRMI 9955, good S8-S9 but
seems undermodulated, no jamming audible direct. Maybe my file is
undermodulated, but stations ought to boost it to their own level.

BTW, the first airing at 0130 on 5850 was a few seconds short as final
edit had not been completed, but my closing was still overridden by
WRMI ID break. BTW2, upload to WRMI System F server was completed with
only 30 seconds to spare before 0130 with unexpectedly slow ftp
transfer, whew. Hot off the `press`! Next:

** VATICAN [and non]. 13830, Feb 4 at 1535, VR Amharic from own SMG
site in extraterritorial ITALY, as I pointed out before can be
amazingly strong here in the wrong direxion, as typical for this
station and can`t help but wonder if their antenna aiming is 180
degrees off! Or at least not restricting radiation off the back.
However, yesterday with poor propagation it was not equivalent to
13820 Cuban radio war; today it`s only S5-S8 and with heavy flutter.
And also a short/long path echo.

Last time, Jan 10, I computed that the long path at surface level
measures 31289 km, resulting in an echo delay of about 1/13 second.
This time I inspect my NGS Globe to track the long path: along the
west coast of the Red Sea, out of Africa from northern Somalia, across
the vast Indian Ocean, way south of Australia, south even of NZ across
Auckland Island, across the vast Pacific near Tubuas Islands (as
labeled, ever hear of those before? Wikipedia spells Tubuai or
Tupua`i), Tuamotu Archipelago, i.e. near Tahiti, Marquesas Islands,
Revilla Gigedo, the Mexican Islands which seem to have no other
funxion, La Paz, western Texas, to Enid. The VR // 11935 is stronger
S9/+10 without flutter.

Further bandscan on 9, 7 and 6 MHz finds all the Chinese and other
east Asian signals with Doppler flutter, i.e. unstable frequencies as
processed by the disturbed ionosphere. Even NZ 7390 not near any polar
path has some flutter at 1545. WWV reports at 1500 Feb 4, K-index of 4
but no storms past or future (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 15475.00 USB, Feb 4 at 0343, checking the LU1HLW SDR in
Argentina for WOR on 5985, I find it first tuned to 15475.98 USB for
LRA36 which I or someone must have last employed it for --- and I am
hearing some off-frequency talk! Turns out to be INTRUDING Spanish
2-way in the middle of their summer night, probably nothing to do with
Antarctica; also have heard 2-way here before (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

R. Logos again running all night (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98 RCUSB, Feb 2 at 1500, LRA36 is on again this
summery Wednesday, via Brasil SDRs: Pardinho is worst, not best, with
too much noise; Campo better, but Brasília #2 best. 1535 closing,
``hasta la próxima``, Antártida theme song, but --- starts over with
``sign-on`` at 1538.7, ``a partir de ---``, multilingual IDs, but
chopped off air at 1547* (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 9700, Feb 2 at 0725, S9+10 of dead air from RHC, while all
others of The Cuban Five on 5 & 6 MHz have been offturned. Something`s
always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** EGYPT. 9899.606v, Feb 2 at 2134 check, via UTwente, R. Cairo is
S9+25/35, with scratchy modulation attempts much like yesterday, or
just silence except for some hum. Comments on the WOR iog:

From Dan Robinson, ex-VOA: ``As Glenn likes to say -- there is always
something egregiously wrong at Radio Cairo. Perhaps it's time for the
DX/SWL community to pitch in for a special delegation of knowledgeable
persons to visit to help them out?``

But Christian Milling of SWService in Germany replies: ``I've offered
them help a dozen times, either having a look at the SW txes or
bringing on a reliable live stream or checking their leveling issue
--- Forget it. It will never change`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NETHERLANDS. 5954.987, Feb 2 at 2341, pop ballad in English,
S9+10/15 via UTwente, first noticed as ACI to Turkey/China on 5960,
q.v. EiBi says Sunlite Radio but only at 04-17; while Aoki shows
overnite on days 3 & 6 = Tuesday & Friday but this is Wednesday going
into European Thursday:
5955 0500-1800 HOL ICON BV.Sunlite Radio Dut Overslag 1-7
5955 1800-0500 HOL ICON BV.Sunlite Radio Dut Overslag 36

But WRTH 2022 shows overnight 1800-0600 only on Saturday as a daggered
irregular test: does that mean Saturday into UT Sunday, or Friday into
UT Saturday??? 500 watts. SHN`s latest Feb list of Euro private SW
stations says 24/7, plans daily 0400-1700. Location is Westdorpe,
which is in SW Neth right on the Belgian border. Operator clarified
that it is barely on the Dutch side. That`s 238 km = 148 stmi from
UTwente at Entschede. As if confirming at an awkward distance, 2348 ID
fades right as the name is said, and then stays downfaded; 2359
announcement definitely in Dutch; 2401, YL ID as ``This is Sunlite``
and back to music (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 515 MCW kHz, Feb 2 at 0715 UT, PN, 25 watt NDB at Ponca
City is back! After two days AWOL (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 1640 kHz, Feb 2 at 0713, KZLS Enid is back to talk show,
and running about 1 second behind same on 1650. What`s that? `Red Eye
Radio`, via KYHN, as listed on RER affiliates website. Allegedly in Ft
Smith AR, it`s really in Sallisaw, OKLAHOMA; so no need for any [non]s
here. DXers and editors who ought to know better seem oblivious to
this distinxion. BTW, I don`t hear it much, day or night, for a
station so close; 1650 usually dominated by Iowa, or even Colorado or
Texas moreso than KYHN at night (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** SPAIN. 9690, Wed Feb 2 at 2306, token English from REE is VG
S9+15/22 into Maryland SDR, as Justin Coe is interviewing a
flamenco/fusion guitarist and composer, José Luís Montón, whose name
makes a bilingual website, never mind the accents? Recorded before
Xmas; too much talk, too little music until 2317 - but just a pause
before more interview. 2320 axually asks him to ``play 15-20 seconds
of his beautiful sweet music``, but fortunately lasts a bit longer.
More like a full minute! Closes with a full song by his collaboratress
in latest release (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY [and non]. 5960, Feb 2 at 2305, no VOT signal into UTwente,
but a trace of something; 2318 now nothing but the Chinese, S9+15/25
from EAST TURKISTAN, standard denunciation. 2331 recheck now atop the
ChiCom is a tone on 5959.887 per Sync when tuned to 5960; but also
locks on 5960.888 if tuned up to there: so that means a 1 kHz tone but
not centred on 5960.000, from VOT. Tone stops at 2338. And now sync
lox a tad above 5960.000 as Chinese again audible. Kuwait is also
well-known for its 5960 offfrequenciness but never at this hour (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2123 monitoring: ``From: Richard
