Glenn Hauser logs February 9-10, 2023  View Printable Version
Friday, February 10 2023

Logs
** CANADA. 362 MCW kHz, Feb 9 at 0759, dash and SB, 500-watt ND beacon
of Greater Sudbury, Ont., seldom audible but now just enough vs local
HNL. How does this differ from plain old Sudbury? (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** CUBA. 11845, Feb 9 at 0813, pulse jamming against nothing, a
long-abandoned, daytime-only, R. Martí frequency, but just in case!
You can`t be too careful. PJ also on current daytime-only RM channels,
11860 & 11930. The Other Side:

READ TODAY THE CUBA OF TOMORROW February 3, 2023 SOCIETY DDC Today:
'The law is prostituted in Cuba,' complain students at the University
of Havana. They say that the Law School has become a 'den of police,
opportunists and mediocrity'. DDC | La Habana

Students at the Law School of the University of Havana expressed their
disagreement with the educations they are receiving at an academic
institution where the violations of rights committed by the Cuban
regime are not addressed, nor the challenges that this entails for the
justice system``...
https://diariodecuba.com/cuba/1675350881_44979.html
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KIRITIMATI. 846, Feb 9 at 0755, no JBA carrier detectable from R.
Kiribati. But Gary Pence, KM5X, had detected it at 0403 into Oahu SDR
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NEW ZEALAND. 11725, Feb 9 at 0815, surprised to hear some Pidgin
here with keywords ``blong``, VG S9+10/20. Must be a change by RNZP
back to a previous frequency, ex-13755? NO, it`s on that too at equal
VG level. Imagine: two AM frequencies at once. How to Listen website:

0559-1258 13755 + 11725 from 8 Feb Pacific Mon-Sun
0859-1258 13755 + 11725 from 8 Feb NW Pacific Vanuatu Solomon Isl PNG
Mon-Fri

Such a display is extremely confusing. Does it mean that one of the
frequencies switches to NNW antenna at 0859 but not on weekends? If
so, which one? They are not specified as AM, like many others in the
sked. At various other times when there are two frequencies, one of
them is DRM (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2177)

** OKLAHOMA. 515 MCW kHz, Feb 9 at 0756 UT, no signal from PN, ND
beacon at Ponca City; had been reliable for several weeks, day and
night by groundwave whenever checked, my strongest NDB, even more than
341 EnId. Still off at 1835 (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** TAIWAN. 11745, Feb 9 at 0814, S9/+10 in Japanese, what? RTI this
hour via Paochung site per Aoki. Azimuth should favor N America far
beyond. 11745 is occupied by Al-Azm, the Sa`udi AFRTS, 22 hours per
day not including this one (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 395 MCW kHz, Feb 9 at 0758 UT, 25-watt ND beacon at
Newton/Harvs, Kansas, JBA vs local noise level peak.

407 MCW kHz, Feb 9 at 0758 UT, HRU, 25-watt ND beacon at Herington,
Kansas, blocked for some time by local noise peak circa 400 kHz,
enough S/N to ID it again, but tuned to 405 USB, heard much better
than on 407 itself (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2176 monitoring: confirmed UT
Thursday February 8 at 0130 on WRMIs: 9395, S9+10/15 into Lincoln NE
SDR; 5010, S6/S8 into Maryland SDR. First I tried for 5010 on Campo,
Brasil SDR, but it was JBA beneath CW QRM.

** U S A. 4980, Feb 9 about 2315, and Feb 10 at 0204, WRMI still here.
Ivo Ivanov says a new #4 frequency for WRMI Legends has been
registered with HFCC, 5050 at 2300-0500 in B22, replacing 4980. Recall
that 5050 was frequency of defunct WWRB. Also, paving the way, Mark
Taylor, WI, NASWA Flashsheet, reported a pirate on 5050 USB, Feb 5 at
0403, Mix Radio International (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2177)

** VANUATU. 11835, Feb 9 at 0810, no signal from R. Vanuatu on 3 X
3945, altho NZ pounding in on new 11725; also Taiwan on 11745. Gary
Pence, KM5X, agrees at 0812: ``Vanuatu continues on 7260. No Signal on
3945. I just checked in at the ToH on 7260 and copied at KFS rSDR H
.M. Bay, CA a S9+5db signal to hear a YL give an ID and other info
with no signal copied on 3945 and its accompanying harmonics. 73s,

Glenn Hauser logs February 8-9, 2023  View Printable Version
Thursday, February 09 2023

Logs
** BOUVET ISLAND. 21225 USB, Feb 8 at 1635, big ham DXpedition is on
air, 3Y0J. Working stations as fast as possible, which means uttering
call of contact and signal report. ONLY OCCASIONALLY utters own
callsign, heard at 1639, 1654. I think: could have been a contact
saying it. I again object to typical DXpedition protocols. Callers see
no need to call the station by name: they just keep saying their own
calls. IMO, no contact should be complete without BOTH stations saying
the call of the other, followed by ``this is`` or ``from`` their own
call, every time! So it takes a few more seconds: live with it.

Further problems: 3Y0J often QRMed by stations calling him on same
frequency. Others without IDing themselves often interject ``up
five!`` and then some other others swear at them for doing that. All
this I was hearing via the Campo SDR in Brasil. The TWR S Africa SDR
was tied up on 10115, evidently the CW frequency of 3Y0J, I did not
try to copy, but I bet they still sent ``DE`` to make it clear who is
who. At 1652 could not hear 3Y0J direct on 21225 but occasional
interlopers and most activity by callers on 21230 where they are
supposed to be (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** BRAZIL. 410 kHz, Feb 8 at 1633, IG, ND beacon via Campo SP SDR as I
bring it up to reach Bouvet, already tuned here. Classaxe RNA shows IG
is at Guarulhos SP nearby, but not listed by dxinfocentre.com (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** FRANCE. 11875.083V, Feb 8 at 0753, African language S9+10 but
varying audibly as I try to measure it. RFI Fulani this semihour from
Issoudun, altho CRI in Mandarin also listed. MUF from Europe has
ascended. Way off frequency but in unlikely event NASWA log editor
pick this item, he will lop off the numbers right of the decimal
making this nonsensical; anti-accuracy (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KIRITIMATI. 846, Feb 8 at 0803, no JBA carrier detectable from R.
Kiribati; since it`s Wednesday? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NIGERIA. 7255-, Feb 8 at 0745, S8/S9 of dead air from VON.
Something`s nullified in Nigeria (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 12030, Wed Feb 8 at 2300, token English from REE direct, VG
here on ME frequency off the back, as good as 9690 toward NAm. Also on
weaker 11940 SAm, AND much weaker 11685 Af, all four transmitters on
air for a change. At 2258 tune-ins, 11685 // 12030 and separately
11940 // 9690. Subject after news is interview about a large
audio-visual trade show in Barcelona completed a few days ago (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 5960, Feb 8 before and after 2300, no signal direct from
VOT English to N America; so I listen to simulSpain. It does not take
a disaster for TRT to go missing. But by 2336 recheck, Turkish music
inbooming to UTwente, +001 Hz, S9+40/45. 2339 ``VOT, always by your
side`` promo, and 2340 `Feeling Supreme/The Healing Spring` topic the
benefits of carrots - for at least the third time! Good for eye
health. 2353 s/off as if it were the 1330 broadcast, IS and stays on
with German IDs, 0000 Feb 9 opening German, news; soft/sad music by
0010. Still German past 0030. Something`s always erroneous at Emirler
and/or awry at Ankara. BTW, maybe missed some, but have never heard
KURDISTAN or Kurds in any sense in connexion with the EQ, mentioned by
TRT nor any of the major news media. No doubt Erdogan would be pleased
if as many of the victims as possible were Kurds. It would be
interesting to understand how Dengê Welat is covering this (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2176 monitoring: ``From: Richard Lemke, St.
Albert, Alberta, Canada, the desk of Richard’s listening Post, Radio:
JRC NRD-535 HF, Antenna: random long wires in the trees. Dear Glenn:

Confirmed Wed Feb 8 at 2200:22 on WBCQ 7490 minus 76 Hz = 7489.924,
S9+10/15 into Virginia SDR. Next:

0130 UT Thursday WRMI 9395 to NNW
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S

New WOR 2177 should be ready early UT Friday Feb 10 for download and
first broadcast at 0330 on WRMI 7780.

One may also contribute via Pay Pal, not necessarily in US funds to
woradio at yahoo.com (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. 730v, Feb 8 before and after 0700 UT, mixture of
Korean talk and English rock music -- what else but KKDA Grand Prairie
TX = The Metroplex, and XEX México CDMX, which is mainly W Deportes,
sports but always heard with English rock music instead overnight. On
a household AM/FM radio not normally for DXing but positioned such
that it favors N/S paths, Panasonic RF569D made in Singapore,
inherited from my late aunt. Not sure of the 6 and 9, numbers hard to
read as imprinted. Yes, that`s it, as another illustrated on eBay for
$ 20.

KKDA is 500 watts, somewhat direxional northward at night to protect
XEX. Originally a superpower station, XEX now only 60 kW day and night
per WRTH 2022; and IRCA Mexican Log, with nothing about it being
anything but 24h sports. Much of the time the signals are equal here,
producing a SAH of about 7 Hz, by the
rapid-counting-as-seconds-tick-by-on-my-watch method. MWoffsets shows
them 9.43 Hz apart:
729.9889 MEX XEX W Deportes (México D.F/Col. El Vergel)
[729.9877-729.9907] 24h 2021-01-03
729.99833 USA KKDA (Grand Prairie, TX) 2017-08-03
However, at the max XEX variation, the apartness would be only 7.63
Hz; altho the measurements were 3.42 years apart.

Radio-locator says KKDA is Radio Korea, DKnet, address in Dallas:
https://dalkora.com/bbs/main.php?gid=radio
Format as ``Asian`` but really Korean only? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VANUATU. 7260, Feb 8 at 0746, JBA presumed R. Vanuatu, still not
changing to 3945 and multiples at 0700. Nothing on 7890, but some weak
2-way on 7889 USB. No 11835 either. Gary Pence agrees: ``Hi Glenn, Was
listening to Vanuatu at ToH 0700z which they remained on 7260 with
[no] QSYing at ToH. Sent [me .wav of] the first 2 minutes at
07z-0702z from ZL1KFM where they were S9+15db and at KFS SW rSDR
H.M. Bay, CA, they were S9 signal on 7260. At 0711z still on 7260. No
signal on 3945 khz. 73s, Gary, KM5X`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
