Glenn Hauser logs March 11-12, 2022  View Printable Version
Saturday, March 12 2022

Hauser
** BRAZIL. 28450 USB, March 11 at 2317-2320+, Calling DX CQ, poor
signal but stands out initially as OSOB. Gives call fonetikaly but
despite many repeats I cannot figure out what the last letter be:
PY2B#. He alternates Bravo and Brasil for the B, but the next letter
is unrecognizable, sounds like ``Broadway`` which doesn`t make sense.
Signals like this may be trans-equatorial propagation rather than
plain old F2, especially over darkness path. This is the season for it
and it also affects the FM BC band above 88 MHz, but never this far
north. See USA for next log (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 13740, March 11 at 2324, RHC Spanish is S9 but horrible
overmodulation distortion and buzz. Something`s always wrong at RHC.
Meanwhile, the useless Chinese music fill relay on 13650 is relatively
clear (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6955 AM, March 11 at 2311, JBA S7 talk. Many logs
here as Earth Station 1W, with SF stuff and Beatles:
https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,94205.0.html
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN [and non]. 5960, Fri March 11 at 2300, V of Turkey to N
America? is JBA direct, so no contest, over to 9690 for L&C REE
English, S9+30/45. Justin Coe says today`s feature will be a
``revisit`` of Amy Egan`s about Galician poetess Rosalía de Castro, VG
but I heard it the first time, so I just listen to the news by JC,
only four stories: far-right party Vox gets to participate in
coalition government for first time since Franco; they are
anti-feminist and of course pro-Franco. Nicaragua recalls ambassador
to Spain, as vice versa last Sept 21 over some dispute about
interference. A commission to investigate sex abuse of minors by
Catholic priests, about time. COVID stats, current infexion rate in
Spain, 429 per 100,000; total epidemic: 11,204,000 cases, 101,777
deaths. 2307 classical guitar interlude and over to Amy.

Then I check the other REE frequencies direct: 12030 is OFF! Normally
a close second to 9690, off the back to ME; 11940 to SAm is abnormally
weak S6/S8 with flutter, but better than 11685 to Africa, S4/S6 with
flutter (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 28425 USB, March 11 at 2321, tuning around 10m after q.v.
BRAZIL, it`s not the OSOB, because here is a bigger signal calling CQ
over and over past 2323+ with no answers, KC4TVZ. His fonetix are
clear but never any QTH, but with southern accent; so, Antarctica? KC4
used to be the US prefix there. Hardly, per QRZ.com: KC4TVZ USA flag
USA, Todd Burnette, 6415 Ivy Springs Drive, Flowery Branch, GA 30542,
USA. So close, this must be sporadic E (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2129 monitoring: confirmed Friday
March 11 after 1915 on IRRS SW 7290 via Bulgaria; and MW 1323 via AM
Italia, Villa Estense. Once started I did not keep on them to be sure
full 29 minutes aired, but hope so. Did monitor as usual earlier from
before 1900: 7290 carrier on at *1857, S9+20/35 but heavy ACI from
7285 into UTwente. After 1900 ACI from the other side, 7295. As
always, Bulgaria missed s/on, JIP Feature Story News from a bit before
1901; 1905 IRRS ID and UN News in Brief; 1907 songs filler. Also on
1323, the nearby Noale SDR would not load at first, so tried another,
I5HGM at Cavinglia further away, where CCI from Romania in German was
atop. At 1911 I got IW3HBX Noale to work, where music on both made SAH
of about 3 Hz.

WOR 2129 also confirmed Fri March 11 at 2130 on 1323 kHz only,
preceded by someshow discussing Ukraine, chopped off at 2129 for ID
and then WOR. Now there is no QRoMania; so I try Tambov, Russia SDR,
where I`m also audible, but weakly. How far is that? 2311 km = 1406
stmi. Lucky to be heard at all on transmitter of unknown power. The
path crosses Ukraine near Kyiv.

Also confirmed UT Saturday March 12 at 0230 on WRMI 9395, good S9/+10
into Bikedork Minneapolis KiwiSDR. From next week shifting to 0130.

** U S A. (7490.1v), UT Saturday March 12 at 0100, WBCQ webcast of
`AAAWWW`. Allan says in Fla it`s hot and pus-y, as it better be spelt;
he fried himself in the sun today. Then an ``aside``, complaining
about remotes and other electronic equipment being black, so you can`t
see them, read the labels: I`m 100% with him about that!

Angela gets to say hardly anything this hour; Allan is trying to keep
it non-political; but I gather that Putin wouldn`t dare to invade
Ukraine if their beloved leader T**** were still president, blame weak
Biden? [Huh?!?! T**** was and is Putin`s greatest fan, lapdog.]

Expects Putin to revive SW jamming. Objects to someone saying WBCQ is
``right-leaning`` -- it`s Free Speech! WBCQ is going after grants of
many millions of dollars to preserve and expand SWBC, reach
``subjugated`` countries such as Argentina and Brazil - ? 0117 doesn`t
know whether WLCR will add Russian or Ukrainian on 9330.

0121, trimulcasting on 7490, 6160, 4790, does not give YOOLF but must
be new and live. Then reads long article from The Hill about the
revival of SW due to Ukraine crisis; including BBCWS adding 4 hours of
English on SW for Ukraine and Russia, 14-16 on 15735, 20-22 on 5875.

[Good, but I suspect this of some publicity hype: surely could already
be well heard there if not directly targeted; but checking HFCC I see
those two transmissions now are the *only* ones in any language for
CIRAF zones 28E,39SW. It was already scheduled on 15730 far before and
after 15735 hours, but not any more?]

0141 reads another article, source not given, about the Woofferton
transmitter site in the UK. Lauds Brits for not destroying it [--- but
what about Skelton and Rampisham?]. At WBCQ, vague plans for
transmitter upgrades this summer.

0154 email includes notice that pirate Radio Free Naptown celebrates
50th anniversary of FCC raid with a special March 17 at 3 pm, via
www.rfnstreaming.com or check their website [how about an axual SW
pirate broadcast?? WTFK?]. Prayer and as usual JIP Hal Turner late
around 0201 as he is already talking (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ALASKA. 9550, March 11 at 1554, hard rock music S4/S6, what`s this?
Only listed at 15-16 is KNLS in Russian; one of better signals on band
with depressed propagation (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** AZORES [and non]. 6114, March 11 at 0723, the RTTY is still rampant
here from presumed US Navy, S9+10 abutting 6115 Japan S5/S8 with song
in English (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6060, March 11 at 0722, RHC S9+10 of dead air except for hum,
all other frequencies off. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 11760, March 11 at 1553, RHC Spanish with considerable hum
often infesting its legacy first frequency. Something`s always wrong
at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** IRAN [non]. 5910, Friday March 11 at 1730, another check for weekly
clandestine Channel 1 TV audio from Canoga Park via UZBEKISTAN: no
signal until humming carrier on at *1730.5, S9+10/15 into UTwente, JIP
modulation at 1732, all Farsi talk by different M & W voices, so
succeeds better than truncated transmissions previous weeks. No ID
heard. Surprisingly keeps going past 1800 a bit until 1802 mod chopped
off and then carrier* (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2129 monitoring: missed checking UT
Friday March 11 at 0330 on WRMI 5985; did anyone hear it?

Confirmed still not airing Fri Mar 11 at 1530 on WRMI 9955, rather
gospel huxter. Jeff told me that that would stay at 1530 UT during
DST, strangely enough, so WOR could resume at summer time of 1430 from
March 18. Next:

UNIDENTIFIED. 7110 LSB, March 11 at 0536, UTwente still tuned here for
Ethiopia or non intruding broadcasters as in previous report, but no
longer any sign of that, off or outfaded into daytime? Instead, good
signals of QSOs in Russian, still past 0610. No callsigns heard
however, so not real hams? ``Priyom`` frequently which apparently
means ``cambio``; literally ``reception`` i.e. I am ready to receive
you. Pretty sure it was regular Russian at first but later maybe
involved some other Slavic language. I hoped someone could tell us
what they were talking about, but no replies to my inquiry (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

including many DST changes for Cuba, USA

** BRAZIL. 9666.720, March 10 at 0713, RVM with S4-S7 of secularish
music, representing ZY on 31m, altho sometimes I have a JBA carrier
9819+ (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 9700, March 10 at 0716, RHC only S4-S7 of dead air while all
other frequencies are off already. Something`s always wrong at RHC
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** EGYPT. 9899.617v, March 9 at 2142, today`s R Cairo check via
UTwente: very strong but extremely suptorted with hum, awful, can`t
even be positive it`s in English. Something`s always egregious in
Egypt (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2129)

** ETHIOPIA. 7110, March 10 at 0400, another check for anything but
the INTRUDER, R. Ethiopia which has been here for months, but Robin
Harwood, Tasmania, had reported something European in French. All I
hear now is incomprehensible African language, presumably Amharic,
with the ID, ``Yeh ---`` something, as in WRTH. No French or Slavic.
No second station, no QRM except occasional adjacent SSB QRhaM; fading
down a lot by 0445 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2129)

** TURKEY. 5960, March 9 at 2316, VOT VG signal and mod unto UTwente
this time, with `Feeling Supreme` about natural remedies against pain
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2128 monitoring: confirmed Wednesday March 9
at 2200 on (7490.1v) webcast -- BUT NO SIGNAL on 7490 direct or to
Virginia, Missouri SDRs; yet 9330 VG and even 6160- could be
detected. From next Wednesday at 2100, even more daysorbtion.

Also confirmed UT Thursday March 10 after 0130 on WRMI 5010 VP, 9395

** U S A. 7780, March 10 at 0200, WRMI has replaced Argentina relay
with Radio Svoboda = R Liberty in Russian of the USAGM, which refuses
to put it on any of our SW transmitters closer to Russia, e.g. ideally
situated in Germany. Continues for the hour all-talk, S9 into UTwente;
JBA S4-S6 into Pskov, Russia, SDR, next to Estonia near the western
border; someone in Arlington VA is already monitoring same, so I camp
on him. Meanwhile, Argentina remained on 5800. This deal was prompted
by crowdfunding campaign, like VOA at 2105 on 15770, but Jeff
indicates he`ll keep doing it no matter what.

0259 WRMI ID, 0300 into surprise beepery, seems unlike SW Radiogram
but only going by ear. I never hear any voice announcements, but the
sound changed at 0313; 0329 cut to music and WRMI ID; 0330 into a
gospel huxter with a heavy accent from Brampton, Ontario. That would
be Soteriah International Ministry, daily except UT Sunday. The
beepery came about without any notice or publicity that I am aware of.
I ask Jeff White and Kim Elliot about this, and they reply:

``Glenn: Actually it's a test that Kim prepared in four different
modes. The content is an article in Russian about the 75th anniversary
of the Russian service of the VOA. Jeff``

``Testing text modes in Russian. Via SDR in Russia, signal is too weak
to understand more than the occasional voice word. But our slower text
modes are decoding 100%. Screenshot attached. Kim``

I check again next night UT March 11 on 7780: again R. Svoboda opening
with its long-unheard interval signal. Not another beepery at 0300,
back to R. Slovakia International, in English (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD
OF RADIO 2129)

** U S A. 9390-9400, March 10 at 0709, heavy wideband noise at S8-S9,
almost blotting out TOMBS on WRMI 9395; almost as if deliberate
jamming, and not the sound of DRM nor Cuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 9517-USB, March 10 at 0711, weak 2-way, in Spanish?,
intruding (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98 RCUSB, March 9 at 1507-1509, no signals from
LRA36 into three Brazilian SDRs checked. Someone in Lancaster PA was
also listening to nothing this Wednesday (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA. 13530, March 8 at 2320, JBA carrier with flutter vs CODAR;
13130 & 13020 likewise at 2321 & 2322, all traditional CNR1 jammer
frequencies against Sound of Hope (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 13740, March 8 at 2318, RHC presents S9+25 of dead air with
hum, while 13680 is only S6/S7 but managing to modulate Spanish
suptortedly and hummingly. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ETHIOPIA [and non]. 7110, March 9 at 0334, R. Ethiopia on AM, good
in presumed Amharic via UTwente; intermittent Slavic ham talk on
exactly 7110 LSB only, evitable if listening in USB. I am not hearing
a separate Ukraine-connected broadcaster as reported the day before by
Robin L Harwood, Tasmania:

``[SWL] unusual broadcast on 7110 kHz. There is a broadcaster on 7110
in a European language with a news/current affairs program. I know
Ethiopia has been there but the announcers are definitely not African.
Frequent mentions of Ukraine with male and female presenters. Signal?
was good at 0400 but is now dropping up and down in QSB. Music bridges
and professional presentation. Language sounds Romanian or Polish.
Anyone also hearing it? 0422 7110 UNID News/current Affairs. Frequent
mentions of Ukraine. Signal was S9 at 0402 but has dropped to S6.
Heard via Albertirsa, Hungary SDR.``
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 13089 USB, March 8 at 2322, marine weather with geocoörds,
S9, overmodulated and distorted, i.e. NMN, Chesapeake VA. Equally
defective and // on 12788 USB, NMG, New Orleans LA. Anyham would be
ashamed to emit such signals, but not the USCG. Note to editors,
``umlauts`` on English words cannot be replaced by adding an e. They
signify separate syllabification, not vowel quality (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** U S A. 7780, March 9 at 0200, WRMI with R. Svoboda in Russian,
instead of RAE in Portuguese, which continues on 5800 only, while the
two used to be //. Svoboda is a test as prompted by the crowdfunding
campaign. Seems to be all-talk and continues past 0230 for the rest of
the hour. 7780 on NE antenna makes it OK S9/+15 into UTwente, but no
signal at Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, remote which seems to be funxional,
not blocked or jammed, but maybe too far: east of Moscow about the
same distance as west of Moscow to the Belarus` border.
Yet it`s still too early before local sunrises in Ukraine and western
Russia. Shame on USAGM for being unwilling to employ any of its own SW
transmitters for these.

John Jurasek advises, ``Here's an update just posted to the
Crowdfunding Page: "And, best news of the day; we have a first
mainstream media publicity about what we all have accomplished.
Congratulations to every one of you. This is your story:

https://thehill.com/policy/technology/597411-grassroots-effort-uses-shortwave-radio-to-broadcast-voa-in-ukraine-russia
"``

Hill writer Rebecca Klar just doesn`t get it, both in headline and
body referring to VOA broadcasting on SW ``in`` Russia or Ukraine. The
point is, this is INTO from outside, as it has to be.

Richard Langley reports: ``This is the latest update from the
campaign. Seems last night's broadcast was a test.

"Thanks to WRMI, our one-hour test transmission in Russian (from Radio
Svoboda -- Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty) is on the air right now on
7780 kHz. (A clip below of the first minute or so with the station ID
in English followed by the Russian programming as heard on the U.S.
East Coast).

"We are already getting solid reception reports from as far away as
Poland so presumably it also being received in Russia, as well as the
surrounding countries where Russian is widely understood.

"We hope to start the daily transmissions in Russian soon, in addition
to the VOA English program dedicated to Ukraine news which we began
airing Monday. "Thank you again everyone for your contributions.
Without you this would not be happening tonight!"
-- Richard Langley`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2128 monitoring: confirmed Tuesday March 8 at
