** CUBA. 5040, Aug 18 at 0555, RHC in English, but no signal on 11670. 05-06 and 23-24 are the only nominal hours for English on 5040. It usually goes back into unscheduled Spanish after 0600 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** CUBA. 15140, Aug 18 at 1424, RHC S9/+10 but distorted. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** PHILIPPINES. 9370, Aug 18 at 1427, 1 kHz tone at S2/S4, 1429 JBA Yankee Doodle, 1430 unknown language. VOA sked as Myanmarianese, er, Burmese via Tinang (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** UKRAINE [non]. (7730), catching up on `Ukraine: Security Issue` from web instead of WRMI at 0500: for Aug 17, day 173? accented fast-talking OM. Russia lost more than 44K personnel. Crimea turned into military base, lots of explosions by Ukrainian counter-offensives, ``de-militarization of peninsula``. More bridges destroyed in Kherson region. Relatives reported disappeared. Abducted a journalist, fate unknown. Russia fires up to 800x a day on Ukrainian targets. Few Russians want to fight in Ukraine, so ``recruiting`` in Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and trained on Chechnya. For Aug 16, Day 174, by accented YL, including: railway connexions suspended in southern Ukraine; explosions in Crimea, now military base instead of tourist destination; could take a sesquimonth to liberate part of Kherson region. Russia actively using Belarusian territory for attax on Ukraine. 24 Aug is Ukraine`s independence day when increased shelling is expected; be prepared for air raid sirens. Russia launched more than 22,000 strikes of which only 300 landed on military facilities. Kremlin enjoying keeping the world in tension. More danger at Zap. nuclear plant. Only an ``iron curtain`` can save us from Russia (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2151 monitoring: confirmed UT Thursday August 18 at 0030 on WRMI 9395, S9/+10 direct with storm crashes. Or via PayPal, not necessarily in US funds, to woradio at yahoo.com (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 9955, Thu Aug 18 at 1430, WRMI back on the air at this hour, with Spanish DX show `Frecuencia al Día`, boding well for WOR 24 hours later (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 9330, Aug 18 at 1428, JBA signal presumably the 500? kW WBCQ/WLCR, very QRP? Or propagation? WRMI is not degraded. Note: when setting up a SW station in the US, it`s far more advantageous to put it as far *south* as possible than north. WWV e-mail for 1500 is missing, so I axually listen at 1718, but she is still quoting the 1200 report too! instead of 1500, which was: ``:Product: Geophysical Alert Message wwv.txt :Issued: 2022 Aug 18 1200 UTC # Prepared by the US Dept. of Commerce, NOAA, Space Weather Prediction Center # # Geophysical Alert Message # Solar-terrestrial indices for 17 August follow. Solar flux 123 and estimated planetary A-index 31. The estimated planetary K-index at 1200 UTC on 18 August was 3. [but by 1800, K-index increased to 5] Space weather for the past 24 hours has been moderate. Geomagnetic storms reaching the G2 level occurred. Radio blackouts reaching the R1 level occurred. Space weather for the next 24 hours is predicted to be strong. Geomagnetic storms reaching the G3 level are likely.`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 930, Aug 18 at 0606 UT, music station, ``102.7, the ---`` mixing with sports WKY OKC. Since it`s only on paper, I hunt thru all 51 stations on 930 in the new NRC AM Log, and find the only one with a 102.7 FM connexion is: WFAT Battle Creek MI, U4 5/1 kW, `The Fat One` pretending to be an FM station only, yet with nothing but a translator, W274AQ, CLR = classic rock format. At radio-locator, night pattern shows a null notch thisaway to the SW, favoring the north, probably to protect WTAD Quincy IL not WKY; day pattern not so notched. Reverse lookup of all 102.7 stations in the WTFDA FMDB agrees the only 930 relay match is WFAT! (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 1130 kHz, Aug 18 at 0603 UT, soft rock atop KWKH sports making medium SAH, no doubt KLEY Wellington KS on 250 W daytime power rather than one watt at night, in its latest spate of modulation instead of nonstop dead air. Something`s always wacky in Wellington. Hey, NZ DXers should seek this (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2152) ** U S A. Re my unID Catholic or at least Christian Spanish Aug 4 and 5 between 06 and 07 UT on 1160: have not been able to hear since, but this from Terry Krueger, FL, correlates: ``1160 FLORIDA WRLZ St. Cloud 0735 8/6/22 Nonstop soft Spanish Christian vocals, man top of hour “Esta es WRLZ, Orlando [sic]… El Corazón de Dios.” Peaking very good, so 2500 watts daytime, or 500 night? TLK`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 1430, Aug 18 at 0600 UT, WPLN Madison TN [near Nashville = Public Library of Nashville], ID as 24 hours, back to BBCWS relay with `Newsday`. Presumably cheating on 15 kW ND day facility (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2152) ** VANUATU. 7260, Aug 18 at 0555, no signal from R. Vanuatu, nor after 0600 on 11835. Had been checking every night, except Aug 17, when Manuel Méndez, Spain, Lúcio Otávio Bobrowiec, Brasil, and Ron Howard, California found it already absent from all known frequencies. There they go again (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2152) This report dispatched at 0055 UT August 19

** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98 RCUSB, Wed Aug 17 before 1500, LU4AA remote is busy so I try another Argie for LRA36, but nothing or maybe a trace; 1501 I can get onto LR4AA and find RNASG loud S9/+10 in canned sign-on routine, 1502 themesong, 1505 history about Genl. San Martín, but 1507* dumps off air and never comes back as I let it run until the 60-minute timeout. Better luck Saturday; or Friday? for playback if they kept recording (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** CUBA. 6100, Aug 17 at 0631, presumed RHC Spanish instead of English, since it`s music not // much stronger RHC English on 6060 & 6165. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** EGYPT. 9440, Aug 17 at 2200, R. Cairo only big humwhine into UTwente; 2221 recheck, it`s off before nominal 2245* of 2115 English. Something`s always egregious in Egypt (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** SPAIN. 17855, Aug 17 at 2200, NO signal from REE token English on Wednesday, into UTwente and Maryland. Propagation is degraded but not that much. 15520 for ME is however S8/9+10 into UTwente, VG S7/S9 into Maryland; 11940 for S America is *horribly distorted* into both. 11670 is S7/S9 with a squeal into Maryland. Something`s nonsensical at Noblejas (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** TAIWAN [and non]. Wolfgang Bueschel replies to my logs of Sound of Hope and/or CNR1 jamming on or around 18900, 18970, 21530: ``18900even CHN CNR1 Jammer Mandarin, 2200-2400 UT 11 - 24 kHz wide broad-Audio block. Something`s always erroneous at Emirler (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. Had been dead air for many weeks whenever checked day or night tho not tuned every day. Last log of it modulating was June 1. Something`s always wacky at Wellington (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. So, WPLN on 15 kW day power instead of 1000 watts night. Wonderful to hear BBC WS in glorious mono amplitude modulation. Just a couple seconds behind my semi-local WFSW-FM 89.1 MHz NPR affiliate (mostly a WFSU-FM Tallahassee/different Time Zone simulcast – but not always) that runs BBC WS overnights. So do WUWF-FM Pensacola, 88.1 MHz – about equal distance from me but instead west – however, they divert to Jazz and things overnights local weekends. There again the following early morning (local Sunday), so either a weekend fail, or they’re the latest in the multitude of constant violators. First time log. Thanks for cheating!`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) This report dispatched at 2325 UT August 17

** BRAZIL. 28270.5 CW, Aug 16 at 2340-2347, JBA beacon finally copied after multiple repeats: dash and VVV PY4MAB + more maybe gridsquare: ``28.2705 PY4MAB ? POCOS DE CALDAS, BRAZIL # beacon reported August 2010 coor[d]inated 2 Dec 2021`` per WJ5O roster. It`s the OSOB, no other beacons or phones heard. Aoki shows both as CNR1, from Shijiazhuang and Lingshi 725 sites respectively. HFCC agrees, adding both 100 kW, azimuths 217 and 286 degrees resp., i.e. nowhere near thisaway on short day path. Only other sig on 16m is 17855 Spain still blasting in over mostly night path (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) See also TAIWAN [and non] ** CUBA. 11670, Aug 17 at 0333, RHC in Spanish, not English, S9+10 but quite distorted. Something`s always wrong at RHC. 11850, Aug 17 at 0333, S9+20 but just barely modulated, obviously RHC where something is always wrong. 12000, Aug 17 at 0334, S5/S6 of RHC English on 2 x 6000, quite weak compared to the fundamentals on 25m, but there. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** MADAGASCAR. 13760, Aug 17 at 0330, MWV amid English hour, no African accent but I guess it`s African Pathways Radio as per EiBi, rather than KNLS programming, S8/9+10 --- No! WORLD OF RADIO 2151 monitoring: almost confirmed Tuesday August 16 at 2230 on WRMI 9955: start ``This is Glenn Hauser with World of Radio...`` then cuts immediately to TOMBS! Was S9+15/20 into Knoxville remote, no jamming yet. Jeff White says the audio matrix occasionally plays wrong audio system, so I guess WOR is still supposed to air at this time. Confirmed Tuesday August 16 at 2330 on WRMI 9395, S9/+15 into Maryland SDR; but not on 5950 like last week, so I guess that were another mistake. ** CHINA. 17690, Aug 16 at 1453, the OSOB and consequently the SSOB 16m, in Chinese, partly other language?, S7/S9 until 1500* timesignal and off. HFCC shows 14-15 is USAGM in Bod dialect of Tibetan, 100 kW, 77 degrees from Lampertheim, Germany, but I think this be CNR1 jammer, perhaps from E Turkistan site. Aoki shows VOA Tibetan *jammed. WWV reports: ``Solar-terrestrial indices for 15 August follow. Solar flux 131 and estimated planetary A-index 6. The estimated planetary K-index at 1500 UTC on 16 August was 1. ** CUBA. 11670, Aug 16 at 0640, JBA signal suspected to be overrun again of RHC: yes, I can barely match it to the bigsig in English still on 6165 only. Ivo Ivanov, Observer, Bulgaria, also reports: ``Radio Habana Cuba in English after 06 UT on unscheduled 11670 kHz via Bauta, August 16 from 0600 on 11670 BAU 100 kW / 130 deg to SoAm English in A-22 is till 0400 UTC. The other side: ``READ TODAY THE CUBA OF TOMORROW August 16, 2022 OPINION The Fire in Matanzas: Going Out, or Just Beginning? Accepting that the litany of disasters that Cuba is enduring is a result of chance would mean letting Díaz-Canel off the hook, when, in reality, it is a symptom of a failed system dragging a country towards its ruin. RAFAELA CRUZ | La Habana [caption:] Fuel tanks burned in the Matanzas fire. (H. López/Facebook) A plane crashes with 113 people on board; a tornado wipes out hundreds of homes, many of which would have survived if they had not been in such precarious condition; a balcony collapses, killing three girls; a hotel explodes, taking 47 lives; energy generation plants fail daily, and one of its most important facilities burns down; and, in Matanzas, the worst fire in Cuban history frightens everyone. Not holding Díaz-Canel responsible for this state of affairs would mean accepting that this series of disasters is a question of chance, when, in reality, it is a symptom of a failed system dragging a country towards collapse. It was not really lightning that set fire to the Matanzas Supertanker Base, but rather the failure of its safety systems; probably because, like everything else in Cuba, they are in dreadful condition due to a lack of maintenance and technological obsolescence. While there is no proof of this, we know that of the 2,606 megawatts (MW) that the Energy Revolution should generate, in 2021 745 MW were out of service due to a lack of maintenance, and another 497 MW were about to be due to equipment exceeding their operating cycle. If this is how they treat the commander's last "feat," what can we expect regarding the maintenance of everything else? ...`` https://diariodecuba.com/cuba/1660577868_41600.html (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** EGYPT. 9439.995+, Aug 16 at 2200, R. Cairo news theme recognizable but English unreadable vs huge humwhine and distortion, S9+20/35 into UTwente. Something`s always egregious in Egypt (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** OKLAHOMA. RF 18, Aug 16 at 0500*, KOPX OKC goes off the air. When there is nothing else of interest, I often run one of my four TVs on antenna with Newsy which is virtual 62-7 and never encabled; but seldom am I motivated axually to listen to it. Soon find that KOPX main channel, the only one on Optimum/Suddenlink cable, ch 22, is missing, so they must also be relying on an off-air pickup. Or not even anything by fibreoptic from studio to headend. Back on by next check after 1500. Probably planned maintenance (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR) ** TURKEY. 9830.002+, Aug 16 at 2200, VOT on today and VG modulation, English sked and news, S9+35/45 into UTwente. 2215 `Review of the Tuerkiyeish Press`. 2217 `Weekly Commentary`, by someone from American University, Kabul? by heavily accented YL. No competition from unreadable Cairo, and since it`s Tuesday, no Englishable from España (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** UKRAINE [non]. 7730, August 16 at 0500, WRMI brings up UR1 relay but stays in UU until 0504 `Ukraine: Security Issue` in English finally starts, by the fast-talking heavily-accented OM. I decide to listen to it later online http://ukr.radio/images/ckeditor/files/files/ENG_NEWS_15_08_22.mp3 where one can play it at three-quarter or even half-speed, and may back it up if needed to copy some topix correctly. Including: For Aug 15, Day 173 of full scale war. Russia lost almost 44K fighters, 4K tanx, 195 helicopters, etc. U army in dire need of artillery and aviation reinforcements.
