THREE HOURS OF NEW TEXAS RADIO SHORTWAVE SHOWS ON WRMI, 5950 KHZ, BEGINNING AT 2300 UTC ON SATURDAY, JUNE 18

WRMI broadcasts three new one-hour TRSW shows on 5950 kHz, beginning at 2300 UTC on Saturday, June 18, and ending at 0200 UTC on Sunday, June 19.

The shows are two episodes of the old-time radio thriller Suspense, an hour of Reggae music by Texas musicians, and a one-hour celebration of Juneteenth, June 19, 1865, when Texas slaves learned they'd been freed.

TRSW has an eQSL for each show, available for an emailed reception report covering at least 20 minutes of the show, sent to texasradiosw@gmail.com.

=====

Suspense (2300 UTC, Saturday, June 18)

Suspense was a radio series broadcast on CBS from 1942 through 1962.  One of the great radio shows of the Golden Age of Radio, Suspense, was subtitled "radio's outstanding theater of thrills." The show usually featured leading Hollywood actors of the era.

The digitally restored shows are from August and June 1942.

=====

Texas Reggae (0000 UTC, Sunday, June 19)

While researching the songs, we learned the groups had some native Texans, but many members were from parts of the US where reggae's more prevalent than in Texas.  These artists are now headquartered in Texas, so we're claiming them for this program.

The reggae genre's much like rock or country or soul.  While there are songs we might think are pure reggae, most reggae artists don't confine their music to one style.  You'll hear that variety in the tunes we'll play.

Here's the list of featured artists:
Audic Empire (Feat. Collin Gee)
Bum Lucky
Burning Slow
Dem Roots Music
Idoljob
Lion Heights
Roots From The Clay
Sharac Band
Smokey James & The Mau Mau Chaplains
Soulfiya.

=====

Juneteenth (0100 UTC, Sunday, June 19)

This broadcast commemorates June 19, 1865, when slaves in Texas learned they'd been freed by Abraham Lincoln two and a half years earlier, in 1862.

The show features music by African-American composers.  Some of the music is performed by the artists who wrote the songs.  Other music is performed by orchestras because that's what the music was written for.

This program is a departure from the usual Texas Radio Shortwave fare because the music's not confined to Texas performers, nor are the songs about Texas.

Featured composers are:

Duke Ellington
Earth Wind & Fire (Feat. Ramsey Lewis)
Florence B. Price, Composer (Perf. by New Black Repertory Ensemble)
Jessie Montgomery, Composer (Perf. by Washington Heights Chamber Orchestra)
Margaret Bonds, Composer (Unknown Perf.)
Nina Simone
Prince
Scott Joplin
Stevie Wonder
The Sun Ra Arkestra
William Grant Still, Composer (Unknown Perf.).
