this is going to be in Spanish. They can`t agree what to call it, R.
Arcángel San Gabriel, or Radio San Gabriel. 1459 repeat the s/on with
staff names, then Esperanza/Antártida themesong. 1503 reading a
historical piece about Isla Decepción, mentioning Nathan Palmer, of
Peninsula fame. 1506 song.

1510 ID with ``su compañía``, María Eugenia that this is the 19th
program of the 2022 cycle. Greets a Chilean base, or the Esperanza
manager who has been visiting there. Currently minus 1 C after a low
of minus 8. 1515 phone numbers and all the other platforms for
contact. 1517 music; 1521 ``nos une`` ID. 1521 efemérides = this week
in history first about events in 1897, 1898, 1899, with music
background. 1530 song; 1532 more about Isla Decepción, with an
inactive volcano; Deception is just north of Palmer Peninsula.

1539 long phone interview with a guy, lo-fi distorted, hard to follow
until 1558 wrapup, ``encerramos este programa``, I think they
mentioned date but missed it whether Wed Aug 31 or today Sept 3. 1559
song. 1604 replays the ``s/on`` with staff list, ``la radio hech@ por
mujeres``, another songbit to 1605*. Now I see someone in Hamburg also
on the SDR. At the outset Gary Pence in Dallas, and someone in London,
the one in UK, not Kiritimati, were already on it a few minutes before
me.

Gary tells me: ``Well, at 1452z set off and running and coming in just
a little better than jba but not by much into KiWi SDR SE Half Moon
Bay, CA. I quit listening after 1523z as they were below the noise of
S4 more than they were above that. They barely hit one S unit above
noise floor a couple of times. I wonder if because of their
circumstances their antenna used is acting like a NVIS ant. because it
was quite loud at the LU4AA QTH vs anything stateside, much less
further away? If their intended audience is the home front, well, I
guess that's OK too. Gary``

It`s over 2 kilomiles from Esperanza to Bs As, so too far for NVIS. On
my NGS globe as it seems distancefromto.net lax Esperanza in database.
Even when I specify Antarctica, it leads to some places in southern
Argentina or CHile. Considering it`s under 1 kW, doing pretty well
that far, let alone California (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CONGO. 6115, Sat Sept 3 from circa 0530 until blocked by DRM noise
from FRANCE by *0559.8, NO signal at all, not even JBA carrier from R.
Congo into Canary SDR. Yet Ron Howard was getting it direct, far
beyond Canary on the California coast:

``Sept 3, checked for Radio Congo on 6115, starting at 0515+ UT; about
0525 had an extremely weak carrier; by 0545, the signal was
considerably stronger, but still no audio heard; finally about 0555
heard definite audio with announcers; mostly unusable; a few seconds
before 0600, the DRM started up and completely blocked 6115. So from
0525+ their signal very slowly improved. Assume they are still testing
the new transmitter and running much less than 50 KW at this time? No
QRM from Japan for this time period, but heard later with good signal.

up way too late, so no idea how long it lasted; presumably had just
restarted English hour. Something`s always wrong at RHC. At least its
QRM further discourages listening to the TOMBS nonsense on 6160-

** GREECE [non]. 5129.974, UT Sat Sept 3 at 0230-0300, `Greek Music
Refuge` on WBCQ R. Angela, nice music with very brief announcements in
between, presumably Zach Liangas giving song titles; S9/+10 and not
too stormnoisy into Maryland SDR; followed by `FTIOM` (Glenn Hauser,

** KIRITIMATI. 846, Sept 3 at 0707, JBA carrier but stronger than last
night, from R. Kiribati; and again no other 9/kHz carriers detected on
entire MW bandscan. Ron Howard replies:

846. Thanks for the suggestion! Sept 3, definitely a challenge, but
actually had some audio from time to time (0620-0735 UT). Announcers
and some EZL songs that were rather non-descriptive; 0701-0708,
tentatively the news. The language sounded to me to be Kiribati /
Gilbertese (audio attached [to WOR iog]), but didn't catch a positive
ID. Perhaps someone else can positively confirm the language?

already in English, S8/9+15 and USB tuning helps avoid lower ACI. I
had been listening to Nigeria, q.v. Manuel Méndez, Spain reconfirmed
the weekly English segment last Saturday. W & M alternate; I can
hardly understand her heavy accent, his a bit better. 1854 something
about a traditional medicine app? Ha. Then about deforestation around
Timbuktu. 1901 about an English-learning competition, a brief clip of
someone speaking it better. 1906 end of English, music and not French.
Marred by occasional uteblaaps and running water. WRTH shows English
at 1855-1910, but obviously variable (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NIGERIA [and non]. 7255-, Sept 3 at 0658, VON not checked direct
until now when it is absent; might have been on earlier.

7255 minus 67 Hz = 7254.933, Sept 3 at 1802, S8/9+10 into Canary SDR
with news in English. Continuous annoying squeal diminished but not
eliminated in AM Narrow mode. Also lite 7255 CCI from algo. 1810 ID
and Africa news. My burrito with sour cream & chips with plenty salsa
lunch intervenes. 1844 still going, 1851 Africa sport segment as I
remember it`s time for the only English from 5995 Mali, q.v. Back here
at 1907, as expected VON is almost totally buried by China in Turkish

** OKLAHOMA. APRS tropo map shows Enid on the western edge of lite
enhancement, moreso across Arkansas, Sept 3 at 1520 UT, so I tune the
STB between channels 6 and 36 encountering BAD signals on open
channels: 10, 12, 20, 31, 36; and two decoding:

RF 21, virtual 40-1, KHBS-DT Fort Smith AR, which is really in OK, as
detailed in my last log June 12, q.v.

RF 28, virtual 44-1, only ID as ION, really KTPX Okmulgee - Tulsa mkt

Also finally a BAD on RF 17 in absence of local translator, probably

from R. Congo; might not get it well anyway at this early hour, but
Bruce Churchill was hearing it from 1819 to 1827.5* via Adelaide SA
SDR so I just missed it! Other reports have come in that this is a new
50 kW Chinese transmitter tnx to aid from PRChina. For the first time
this date, Manuel Méndez, Spain was also hearing it in morning, 0550
till eclipsed at 0600 by France DRM - which is supposedly in a limited
test period. MM also thinx it`s too weak for full power 50 kW. So I
have not heard it at all yet (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** EGYPT. 9439.995, Sept 2 at 2153, yay! No horrible signal at all

I can never copy any location or ID, but thought I heard ``Bahamas``
mentioned more than once: probably not. Seems live and current with
times given as 0620zulu. Not in order, but includes visibility in km;
ceiling in feet?; temp and dewpoint in Celsius; altimeter e.g. 1015;
winds in knots and degrees, still past 0647. EiBi shows this is

** NIGERIA [and non]. 7255-, Sept 2 at 0615, NO signal from VON
direct. Sept 2 at 1655 & 1727, NO signal from VON into Canary SDR, not
even a signature off-frequency carrier detected, just storm crashes
from central Morocco to northern Algeria. Further chex: no VON at
1828, 1841; 1858, S9+20/30 from CRI Turkish (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORFOLK ISLAND. ``Hi Nick, Well, September is here so it`s time to
enquire how your plans are going to resume SW broadcasting? Hope
things are going well for you otherwise. Now that Norfolk has achieved
SWBC Radio Country status, I am sure there will be a lot of interest

``Hi Glenn, I am back to Norfolk on 18th. I am still looking for a 1
KW AM transmitter with no luck whatsoever. Had some preliminary
exchange with a firm in Slovenia, they are out of components. The
other manufacturer who advertises 1KW TX admitted they actually never
made one. Also my power bill on Norfolk is $ 1200 per quarter about 4
times more than on Australian mainland. Design for QSL cards has been
sent to printer in Ukraine --- God knows when they will be printed and
shipped. Bottom line: frustrating, but I'll be back on air - hopefully

** OKLAHOMA. OETA has been screwing up this month, concerning what`s
on OETA-2, the `World` channel. On Sept 1 at 16 UT, something else
replaced Amanpour tho still on sked, and 17 show was wrong too. I
contacted via webform, and receptionist Kristi Wren assured me that
Amanpour would still be at 11 am for weeks/months to come; and it was
back the next day -- including first topic, what the ChiCom are doing
to the Uyghurs. In case you think I shouldn`t denounce:

stories of further generations. Since then China has stopped lending
pandas. Amy`s narration in English is *followed* by what was just said
in Spanish interviews, not a bad idea for touching up one`s Spanish.

if true. And never audible at any other daypart; is it not 24/7?? And

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2154 monitoring: confirmed first
SWBCs, UT Friday September 2 at 0130 on WRMIs, 5850 VG direct; 7730
S9+10/15 into Maryland SDR. This time some percussion intruded between
ID and start of WOR; and my last few words closing overcome by BBB
butting in as usual.

Also confirmed UT Friday September 2 at 0330 on WRMI 7780, S7/S9+10
into Maryland SDR despite far offbeam if still aiming SW from FL.

Also confirmed Friday September 2 at 1430 on WRMI 9955, S9/S5 deep
fades and undermodulated but no jamming.

Also confirmed Friday September 2 from 1815.2, S7/S8 on IRRS SW via AM
Italia, Villa Estense, 1323 kHz but never on 207 or 918 kHz any more
tho I pointed out old 918 had less QRM. Now the CCI in German from
Romania`s 15 kW minority service is almost equal to us and sometimes
overtakes, but my Amerenglish speech is sharper and more readable, at
least to me. This time usually conflicts with my call to lunch, so not
paying close attention nor tuning around.

// 7290 IRRS via BULGARIA presumably came on about *1800.8, but not
separately checked until 1828 on the Canary SDR which I already have
running to chase NIGERIA and CONGO: now it`s S6/S8 with storm crashes.
At 1833 I try UTwente closer to its target, S8/9+5; and also JBA on
14580 = 2 x 7290, but not at Canary. Plays to completion at 1844.

Pre-and post monitoring: 1323 tuned in at 1756 during music; 1800 IRRS
SW s/on and FSN as usual then music fill, 1813 German CCI overrides;
1815 IRRS SW ID and into WOR. 1844 on 7290 ID and music, 1848 old PSA
about driving accidents, don`t speed! 1849 opening `Country Jamboree`
but immediately into sub?title, `Country Style USA`, by transcription
from the US Army, DJ Hawkshaw Hawkins, I had never heard of but a
character to look up on Wikipedia: died in plane not auto crash in
1963*; 1855 US Army recruiting promo promising all kinds of benefits
except KIA. *1857 heavy ACI splash from S9+15/20, 7295, CRI English
has just come on, and IRRS cuts off within seconds, as if coördinated
but its usual time regardless of programming in progress. Back to
1323: milicountry music continues a bit; before 1900, IRRS ID mixed
with few seconds of tone from Romania before it turns off. Leaving
1323 relative clear for us an hour too late.

WOR 2154 also confirmed Friday September 2 at 2057 the 2030 on IRRS SW
via AM Italia, 1323, S9+20/25 into Vinci SDR which is getting it as
well or better than nearer Noale which has timed out. 2059 bit of
music, IRRS ID and Feature Story News, not closing down yet, but quite
a fade-down at 2103. Only lite CCI from algo now, but storm crashes:
little lightnings along Italy`s northern border; bigger storms in
eastern France and off south coast in Mediterranean. Next:

7th harmonic of 1280, 8th of 1120, 14th of 640, 16th of 560 --- ahá,

** U S A. 9975, Sept 2 at 0650, soft music at only S3/S5, must be KVOH
nominally until 0600*, not unusual staying a bit later, but not this
late. Earlier blasts in but now struggling against falling MUF. EiBi
says irregularly as late as -0800. Only other 9975 is KTWR but not
until much later, 1200-1230 via Tajikistan, 1300-1400 really Guam

** U S A. RF 31, 26, 21, 10, Sept 2 at 1504 UT, BAD DTV signals on
these `open` channels, correlating with Wichita market, as tropo maps
also show enhancement thataway. Also RF 15 OKC has become BAD no doubt
due to DX QRM. As always, my rooftop antenna remains fixed toward
OKC.

While researching this I also look for what DX I might get since
Enid`s only `local` TV station, K17JN-D of 3ABN, remains kaput, I hope
forever, but since it vanished, no DX logged on 17. KS and OK FCC
possibilities: KLBY Colby KS 400 kW; KAAS Salina KS 65 kW/CP 150; KTEN
Ada OK 1000 kW; and 4 scattered OK LP or translators. KTEN had been

``Jake``, KJKE, 100 kW country station is getting CCI from sports
talk, within which is an ad with a recognizable Stillwater address
mentioning 6th Avenue, Perkins Road. What? We already have SW stations
on 93.7 and 94.3. KJKE rimshots OKC from Newcastle which is closer to
Norman and hardly has a solid signal here, but the QRM is not heard
before. Finally, a ``Triple Play Sports Radio`` slogan. Which is on
KOSB 105.1 Perry, KOKP 1020 Perry and KOKB 1580 Blackwell. Make that
Quadruple? WTFDA FMDB shows this is not in SW but the FM side of
further 1580 KOKB Blackwell, a mere 250-watt translator, K227DK. Yet
it`s almost as strong as KJKE, a bit of tropo boost? Note distances
below.

Make that Quintuple, as they have another translator in Stillwater
itself, which I don`t hear, 93.1 K226CW with only 170 watts; and which
they hardly need with near-local signals from the Perrys. Not that I
care, but while normally simulcasting, they can split three-ways when
stupid ballgames are simultaneous in the three towns, such as Friday
night HSFB? Not that I care about country KJKE getting QRMed; I just
do care about one more impediment to real FM DX. Enid/Blackwell 70 km
= 44 mi; Enid/Newcastle 129 km = 80 mi, a lot closer than the one in
NSW, 107X further, great circly, that is, considerably less direct
thru the Earth (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

Hauser's voice! It turned out I had tuned in the final minutes of
"World of Radio" airing on IRRS, which broadcasts about 250 kilometers

anything else on band except 17630 CRI/Mali. Soon choral music; from
1546 I`m on UTwente where it`s better, now obviously Christian. Only
thing in EiBi & Aoki, never HFCC, is Sa`udi HQS in Arabic at 13-16! No
way, no sign of that, but I recall more than a sesquidecade ago, BSKSA
did have English on SW around this time. 1550 it`s RCC, as the pope is
singing in Latin, mixed with narration spoken play-by-play or
translation. Nothing in HFCC, Aoki or EiBi about VR on 17615 anywhen.
Must be a special event. At 1553 I check the website and find this
along with same live on YT: ``started 29 minutes ago: From St. Peter's
Basilica, Holy Mass presided over by Pope Francis with the new
Cardinals``. By 1611 QRM from heavy splatter out of 17600 which must
have just come on, Algeria. I let it run anyway, 1625 choral music
until Vatican off at 1647*. Site? Maybe SMG but not surprised if
