Logs
** KIRITIMATI. 846 kHz, Feb 22 at 0743, JBA carrier from R. Kiribati.
Checking Oahu SDR this date, Gary Pence, KM5X, reported: trace seen at
0741 but not at 0918. Wednesday has sometimes been an off-night for
them (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 9690, Wed Feb 22 at 2305, token English from SNR on subject
which does not grab me, so I`m mainly hearing simulTURKEY, q.v. But
all four frequencies are on in usual descending quality > 12030 >
11940 > 11685 into Maryland SDR. BTW, JRX in Paraíba says 9690 for NAm
is better there than 11940 for SAm. At 2315 interview about a Badajoz
carnaval and museum, and then about the same in Santa Cruz de
Tenerife, which she says is second only to the carnaval in Rio (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 5960.003+, Feb 22 at 2301, VOT English makes in on air
today unlike last two nights, VG S9+30/40 into UTwente; news mainly EQ
stats such as official death toll now at 42,310. 2311 `Review of
Turkish Press` ending, also about that. 2312 promo acknowledging S&R
teams from abroad. 2313 `Whipping Piles` (?) about AI, such as a
painting program, Canvas. 2318 `Weekly Commentary` about PKK
terrorists [or sometimes sounds more like tourists] by
heavily-accented YL, and now she also has the CCCCCCI from XJPBS, std
denunciation, to cope with; criticising PKK for continuing to carry
out attax despite the EQ damage. 2324 outro inviting anyone to submit
their opinions by email for possible broadcast, and credit for this
one by name and institution totally unreadable. Music break until 2333
`Feeling Supreme/The Healing Spring`, something about an anti-oxidant
supplement involving the liver; 2340 bit of theme music but continues
with more of same till 2342, then music break. After 2330 I`m mainly
attending NBC Afternoonly News. 2352 squeezes in the multi-lingual ID
filler reel, but chopped off the air at 2353.7* amid Swahili before
completed; so we don`t even get any standard s/off or IS. Opening
frequency for XJPBS now in the clear. Something`s always erroneous at
Emirler (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 365 MCW kHz, Feb 22 at 0747 UT, AA, 100-watt ND beacon at
Fargo / Harwood ND: only somewhat unusual one now (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** U S A. 28243 CW, Feb 22 at 2134, EEEEEEEE DE WA6APQ/B, only one of
many in the 10m hambeacon subband; per WI5V.net ---
28.244 WA6APQ C LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA # 30W, VERTICAL. --- QRZ.com:

``WA6APQ flag USA, DEWEY MYERS, 2903 Monogram Ave, LONG BEACH, CA
90815 - The WA6APQ BEACON on 28.2440 MHz is located on a 330 foot
hill (Signal Hill) in Long Beach, California. Radio is a Motorola
Mitrek consolette base station, 30 watts, antenna is Antron 99
vertical. Code speed is approx. 10 wpm and operates 24/7. Since 1993.
If you would like a beacon QSL card, send SASE or SAE with $ 1.00 (no
IRC's) or email for a printable QSL card. Include the standard (RST)
signal report, UTC time and date. Audio/Video and Youtube recordings
are welcome. Thank you for looking.``
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2178 monitoring: ``From: Richard
Lemke, St. Albert, Alberta, Canada, the desk of Richard’s listening
Post, Radio: JRC NRD-535 HF, Antenna: random long wires in the

Also confirmed UT Wednesday February 22 at 0030 on WRMI 9395, S9+10/20
direct.

Missed checking Wed Feb 22 at 2200:21 on WBCQ 7490v; anyone hear it?

** U S A. 1130, Feb 22 at 2139 UT, dead air at S7 from KLEY Wellington
KS, still so at 2208; and at 2255 when an understation has become
audible, no doubt KWKH. This shows you how seriously Rocking M Media
takes its broadcasting business. Long spans of dead air or off-air
have happened several times before. I wonder if their 100.3 translator
still modulate; doesn`t reach here. BTW, radio-locator.com shows there
is another KLEY on FM 95.7 in Jourdanton TX, presumably unrelated; as
FCC abandoned the idea of unique callsigns years ago if both parties
agreed to share. KLEY in KS has a sibling station on 1550 in nearby
Winfield, KKLE where I am not hearing it; had been reactivated at
least briefly some months ago // 1130 instead of two different
formats. 1130 carrier normally runs all night, modulated or not,
obviously 250 watt day power instead of one watt at night, to
detriment of KWKH which obviously does not care (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** VANUATU. 7260, Feb 22 around 0730, RV JBA here as usual, and no
7255- Nigeria (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 9700, Feb 22 at 0726, S9+10 dead air and quite steady.
Currently a RNZP frequency not scheduled in Aoki & EiBi until *1651
much later; while 13755 is in well. Neither caught it that 9700 has
axually been heard as early as 1400 Feb 10, // 7390. Possibly a #2 NZ
transmitter test, but suspect RHCuba instead, while no other usual
frequencies are still on. Aoki reminds us Turkey here until 0656, EiBi
until 0700 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 25975 LSB, Feb 22 at 2127, Brazilian 2-way;
26305.3 AM, Feb 22 at 2131, 2-way in English. I`m scanning the 11mb
portion 25800-26500 for any NBFM broadcast auxiliaries like KOVR`s on
26110, hitting nothing but these two (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** GERMANY [non]. 15215, Feb 21, 2023, *1559.5 cut on with Radio
Öömrang opening annual broadcast via FRANCE. S7/9+5 into Maryland SDR.
First in German, then English as 500 kW at 5-6 pm local time, for
expats in NYC, where more Frisians now live than on the original
island. 1602 German; as to be expected mostly in German supposedly
with some Frisian mixed in, and occasional English announcements such
as 1619, with contact info, produxion and funding credits. I reminded
the WOR group about this at 1558, and reports from all over N America
ensued. At 1638 I check it direct to OK: S9/+10 with some deep
fades.

Of course, the non-fluent in German or Frisian can`t get much out of
it, and to make matters worse, totally oblivious to this annual event,
Pres. Biden made his big speech in Warsaw around 1640, drawing us
away.

At 1656 repeat English about credits and contacts, into German but
chopped off air at 1658* before can finish. Hansjoerg Biener in
Germany provided the WOR iog with this background:

``Öömrang Special Broadcast: What did you listen to?

Since 2006, Amrum native Arjan Koelzow has sponsored an annual
shortwave broadcast aimed at the global community of Amrum exiles,
particularly those in New York. (The most recent wave of emigration
was after World War II.) The broadcasts started via Juelich but were
transferred to Wertachtal in 2009 and later to Issoudun (France) as in
this year:
Tuesday, February 21, 2023, 1600-1700 h UTC: 15215 kHz (Issoudun 500
kW, 300°)

The broadcast coincides with a local festival, the Biikebrennen. At
https://www.ndr.de/ratgeber/reise/nordseekueste_sh/Biikebrennen-2023-Wo-die-Feuer-an-der-Nordsee-lodern,biikebrennen4.html
you will find the following information about the custom:

"The Biikebrennen is seen as the oldest remaining North Frisian
custom. It was originally a pagan ritual, and Christian missionaries
tried to end the custom around the 10th century. However, the
Biikebrennen continued as a cheerful carnival celebration. Therefore,
it had to take place before the start of Lent. [So, it is celebrated
on St. Peter’s Day now.] At first there were no large piles of wood
burning [as in other German midwinter or midsummer customs], but
individual fires on long poles. A straw doll, the pider, often went up
in flames too. This particular custom has survived in some places to
this day. Later the Biiken burned to drive away the winter. [...]

Since the 19th century, the Biike fires have also been a symbol of the
North Frisians' sense of togetherness and sense of tradition. Children
use the festivals to play pranks on adults. In some places, they even
have no school the next day, St. Peter's Day in honor of the
fishermen's patron saint. In 2014, UNESCO registered Biikebrennen in
the national register of cultural heritage.”

At the beginning of the 2023 programme, it was announced that it would
run parallel to Biikebrennen; but the NDR information gave the Amrum
time for Biikebrennen as 1800 h local time (1700 h UTC). This year the
programme was mostly in German with some Frisian interspersed. The
content of the word oriented programme included old stories from Amrum
(e.g. the finding and hiding of a 200-liter barrel of rum in early
World War II. Later in the war, the authorities hit back at the local
population: If you can recover and hide items washed ashore, you can
also recover dead bodies of seamen and airmen.), but also interviews
with pupils and teachers of the Öömrang-Skuul. Particularly
interesting was the tale of a cultural clash of its own kind when a
Amrum school class visited another school class on the mainland. In
all seriousness, someone asked whether electricity and television were
already available on Amrum.
(Dr Hansjoerg Biener)`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY [and non]. 5910, continued from last report, of TRT EQ
coverage in Turkish on the IRDR frequency placeheld by SMG Vatican
site, in clear before 0100 but what about the CCI as registered
afterwards, UT Feb 21:

*0058 via Maryland SDR, classical musiQRM cuts on from RRI, S9+10 atop
TRT, shows 0 Hz offset; but via UTwente it`s +004 Hz making heavy SAH,
RRI also atop. 0100 RRI opening Romanian for NAm. But how will they
compare in the EQ area? Closest KiwiSDR is Cyprus, so I get on that by
0120: S9+25 TRT atop with yelling and other noises outside any studio.
By 0200 the CCI is very heavy. 0215 at Maryland SDR, RRI is atop the
CCI as to be expected. At 0301 now Romania is off but CRI English via
Cuba is on: At Cyprus weak S6/S7 algo, TRT off earlier than 0400? No,
at UTwente, TRT still heard at .004, S9+25 with sirens; at Maryland,
only CRI is heard at 0301. By 0400 no 5910 signal into Cyprus (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY [non]. 5960, Tuesday Feb 21 at 2258, BBC WS English via OMAN
until 2259* leaving nothing well past 2300. Neither VOT nor XJPBS
comes on. Recheck 2312, now Chinese from EAST TURKISTAN, std
denunciation, has appeared: rarely does it start right at 2300.
Monitored UTwente in background rest of hour and never any show by TRT
again tonight. Something`s always erroneous at Emirler (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** U S A. 347 MCW kHz, Feb 21 at 0226, AFK, 25-watt ND beacon at
Nebraska City NE. 349 RG OKC is still OFF, so at 0753 I detect algo on
349, just too weak to copy. But DXinfocentre has only one US station
listed, 25 watt GW in GreenWood MS - and only one other anywhere, 1E
in Black Tickle! NL, 25 watts. I`d love to hear that one (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

Nigeria on 7255- (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Atlantic 9/kHz split JBA MW carrier search, Feb 21
at 0221 when EurAfrica are still dark: only 621, 684, 837, 855-2, 1089

synchros, which BTW has applied to turn off some of its lower-powered

Logs
** CUBA. 6165, Feb 20 at 0726, S9+20 of dead air in English -- or is
it Spanish, and nowhere else on 5, 6, 10 or 11 MHz, except:
11760, Feb 20 at 0737, S9+20 of dead air here too. Something`s always
wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KIRITIMATI. 846 kHz, Mon Feb 20 at 0739, cannot detect a JBA
carrier from R. Kiribati nor any other 9/kHz split. But Gary Pence,
KM5X did see it on the Oahu SDR waterfall at 0537 (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** KOREA NORTH. 9875, Feb 20 at 0732, S7/S9 with distorted song and
Russian talk, i.e. VOK as sked 0700-0857. At this hour probably aimed
up the Pacific coast in local Siberian evening. Much stronger than VOK
Japanese on 9650 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** MEXICO. 28171 CW, Feb 20 at 2250, too-quick check of the 10m
hambeacon band on the first one I encounter, with strange keying, odd
spacing: three dashes at diminishing powers, then XE1FAS/ B after a
space, and then E-something gridmark. NOT listed in WI5V roster on 10
m, only on 12: ``24.9295 XE1FAS PUEBLA MEXICO New 16 Sept 2010``

but the older WJ5O roster not updated since 2016y has it:
``28.171 XE1FAS C PUEBLA, MEXICO # 5W, VERTICAL NEW 30 Sept 10``

Much more info and illos at his QRZ.com page; which is his surname?
``XE1FAS Mexico flag Mexico, SEGURA WALLS ALEJANDRO, 31 PONIENTE 2926,
COL. EL VERGEL, PUEBLA, PU 72410, Mexico``

including, sic: ``BEACONS : 28.171 , 24.929.5 , 50.030 ALL CW ,
(XE1FAS/B EK09VB ) 15 WATTS , LOOP ANTENA TRIBANDER ,OPERATED INTERVAL

ANT QUARTER VERTICAL ANTENA, IN OCTOBER APROX PUT IN THE AIR 472-479
HZ NEW BEACON .`` Among many other things he also runs an SSTV
repeater (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NIGERIA [and non]. 7255-, Feb 20 at 0725, VON with S9/+10 of dead
air, way to go! Something`s always abysmal at Abuja. At least it
doesn`t QRM neighbor 7260 VANUATU, much weaker (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 350 MCW kHz, Feb 20 at 0745 UT and still 1639, RG, ND
beacon at Will RoGers World Airport, OKC, is AWOL. No particular
weather excuse. How are all those World planes going to land safely
without it? The other local-Okies are still extant, night & day: 255
SW StillWater, 332 IC wIChita KS, 341 EnId, 515 PoNca City. RG listed
400 watts, but days before vanishing, seemed to be weakening (Glenn
Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** ROMANIA. 5990 AM, UT Mon Feb 20 at 0140, absolutely local-quality
excellent signal into UTwente, discussing World Radio Day a week ago
and how R. Prague International was marking it; i.e. this is RRI
Galbeni during the N American service hour, intercepted in Holland,
but probably also VG on to the east coast at least; DX/SWL/Media
Programs alleges show at this time is `Listeners Letterbox` (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 9690 > 12030 > 11940 > 11685, Mon Feb 20 at 2300, all four
SNR frequencies funxional once again into Maryland SDR for token M/W/F
English; after news from 2307 interview with an Irish guy living in
Spain for a dekayear and a Spaniardess, María, who are authors and
publishers about Irish/Spanish cultural connexions (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** TURKEY [and non]. 5910.005, Feb 20 at 2309 & 2339, all-Turkish
broadcast, S9+25/30 into UTwente, presumably special service on
frequency reserved for IRDR = International Radio for Disaster Relief.
Probably a domestic TRT network if not a special one. HFCC has SMG
VATICAN site registered 24 hours, but I think a placeholder so this
one not necessarily transmitted from there: altho on this band due to
skip distance, would work better than from Emirler inside Turkey, too
close.

Not in EiBi but Aoki assumes it is:
5910 1700-0400 CVA Voice of Turkiye Tur Santa Maria 1-7
However that span conflicts with Romania to NAm in Romanian at 01-03,
and CRI via Cuba at 03-05!

BTW, some editor keeps ``correcting`` NAm in my reports to Nam --- it
has to be a capital A for America abbreviated, nothing to do with Viet
Nam!

5960, meanwhile, the VOT N American service frequency, is AWOL yet
again, which happens far too often, earthquaxe or not, during the
entire hour, as nothing but Chinese heard from 2302, i.e. XJPBS
Urumqi, East Turkistan, land of imperialist ChiCom genocide against
Uyghurs and other Moslems (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2178 monitoring: Also confirmed
Sunday February 19 from 2101 UT on IRRS SW via AM Italia, 1323 kHz
only, Villa Estense, S9+15/18 into nearby Noale SDR. Preceding IRRS
unnamed music show ran a bit over; had been playing Horn-of-Africa
music. During ID and WOR start, heavy QRM from something in Italian:
new station, or double feed at AMI? Had cleared by 2118 recheck.

Also confirmed UT Monday February 20 at 0054 the 0030 on WRMI 7780,
JBA direct despite S9/+10 including HNL but at 0058 into Louisiana
SDR, good S9/+10 without the HNL.

Also confirmed UT Monday February 20 at 0401.5 on WBCQ Area 51, 6160
minus 64 Hz = 6159.936, S9+5/10 into Maryland SDR. JL gotta go by 0400
but inserted by surprise an old clip of me about something offtopic,
then WOR. Larry Will says, ``Glenn, we've been using that particular
"area 51 [Ode to] slinky" liner for years now. It dates to 2009; I
don't know which WOR it originated from. The voice saying "do what you
gotta do" at the end is James Brownyard of WHYP, a notable free radio
operator. Lw`` - Next:

** U S A. 9475, Feb 20 at 2020, George McClintock calls asking me to
check out this WTWW day frequency which he has fired up just about for
the first time, running 50+ kW; it`s the same #2 transmitter as on
5085 at night, since #1 & #3 are still unusable. I have to tell him
it`s JBA; I can perceive it`s on with talking, presumably PPPP; yet
neighbor WWCR 9980 with TOMBS is blasting in as usual. Unless
something else is wrong, maybe because on antenna aimed south as I am
due west, way off to the side of it; altho in heyday was strong enough
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 15825, Feb 20 at 1643, WWCR-1 is S9+30 direct tnx to not
unusual sporadic E boost, but with humbuzz, unseems local as no other
signals suffer such; finally at 1727, check Maine SDR, sounds same
there, S9+25/40. Something`s nogood at Nashville (Glenn Hauser, OK,
W)R

** U S A. 720, Mon Feb 20 at 0701 UT, WGN with news on the hour, then
a bit of weather and sports before 0706 joining some talkshow,
probably a replay from daytime. I never heard any ads. I`ve been
suggesting to the Courtesy Programs Committee that they should
approach WGN about turning off the air for the special event UT Wed
March 1 at 0759-0809 UT when co-channel 720 KDWN in rare Nevada has
agreed to test with 25 kW day power one last time before going off the
air forever; but CPC are defeatist, offering all kinds of excuses that
this would never be agreed to by WGN. Anyhow, if they went off for
only 5 minutes it looks like they might not lose any advertising, and
anyway would still be streaming altho appparently a holdout without
even an FM translator. Doesn`t WGN owe KDWN a little something for
*protecting* WGN all these years?

``Totally agree with you, Glenn. Defeatist in the extreme. Why not
simply ask. The presumptions of our infantile Walker is down right
irritating. I simply can't see a downside to asking! Nothing ventured,
nothing gained! Hang in there, my friend! Walt Salmaniw`` (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 9510v, Feb 20 at 0734, big hum with pulsing, S8/S9,
peaks hard to pinpoint, approx. 9510.1 and 9510.17. I also heard this
previous night but not logged suspecting something local. Only thing
in Aoki & EiBi at this hour is XJPBS Urumqi Mongolian service which I
would not expect to hear so bigly (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
