Please note and spread the word - for those not on a list where my almost-daily all-band but mainly SW log reports appear -- or for those who are but find this a more convenient archive, weekly merged roundups of all these reports in their original form are posted early every UT Thursday via:

Glenn Hauser logs September 12-13, 2023  View Printable Version
Thursday, September 14 2023

Logs
** CUBA. 11850, Sept 13 at 0132, RHC with S9+10 of dead air in
Spanish, flanked by usual JBA carrier parasitic spurs on 11840 &
11860. At least not a roar now from Saudi Yemenia on 11860, just a bit
of residual Cuban pulse jamming for mutual QRM. Dead air or
just-barely-modulation is *normal* for 11850; what incompetence.
Somethings` always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 17855, Wednesday September 13 at 2200, token English from
SNR, this NAm frequency is much weaker than usual but still sufficient
into Maryland SDR, not sufficient direct. 2205 feature by Justin Coe
about some musician connected with composer of Looney Tunes music,
Raymond Scott. Initially S8 with deep fades to S4, but fades
completely out by 2225. At first the second best was 11670 for Af
rather than 15520 for ME nor 17715 for SAm. After 17855 was gone,
11670 became best/and/only by default for French after 2230, but
barely usable with RTTY warble. G1 level geomagnetic storms are
ongoing per WWV (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 11785.009, Sept 13 at 2200, no signal direct from VOT
English; but also zero signal into UTwente past 2245 which ought to
get at least a trace, so assumed AWOL despite geomag storm.
Something`s always erroneous at Emirler (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. Re the Route 66 On the Air special ham event as logged on
18164 USB Sept 12, website https://w6jbt.org/ says datespan is Sept
9-17, no bands or frequencies seen but lots of calls roughly in order
from West to East from LA to Chicago, W6A to W6N, skipping W6O, and
W6P to W6U; includes many towns along the way but not Santa Rosa or
Tucumcari (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2207 monitoring: ``Dear Glenn: Confirming
World of Radio #2207, notes, loggings, 9395 kHz, WRMI: S8 signal,
aurora QSB, 2330, 2345, 2359 (45443), September 12 UTC 2023 [Tue]
(Lemke, Richard -AB)``

Confirmed Tuesday September 12 at 2330 on WRMI 9395, S9/+15 VG into
Maryland SDR.

Missed check Wed Sept 13 at 2100 on WBCQ 7490v; anyone hear it? Next:

0030 UT Thursday WRMI 9395 to NNW
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 9395 to NNW

The new WOR 2208 should be ready by early UT Friday Septembet 15 tho
not Shortwaved until UT Sat Sept 16 at 0130 on WRMI 5850.

Thanks this week for financial support from Christopher Campbell,
Columbus OH, for a contribution via PayPal in US funds but not
necessarily, to woradio at yahoo.com and says, ``For your continuing
generous effort to supply daily DX news about the world to the world.
My greatest appreciation and admiration lay upon you. Your work means
so much to me. I love the "tips for rational living.``

One may also contribute by MO or check on a US bank to:
Glenn Hauser, PO Box 1684, Enid OK 73702 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 101.5, Sept 13 at 1955 UT on caradio, bits of Spanish and
partial ID as ``Mexicana ... y 93.9``, so of course it is again KSMM
Liberal KS which is also on 93.9 Dodge City KZRD --- not a relay of
92.9 KMML as there is no such station tho still shown that way in
WTFDA FM DB for 101.5.

Still no longer hearing any dead air in $ tereo on 101.5, as per
numerous logs in August, which I assumed was out of my nearest, KOCD
Okeene. But of course never heard ID; could have confirmed only by
driving closer to Okeene, but R. Salvación website claims it and its
own LP primary on 93.9 in OKC had both gone off the air in January. So
if true, the DA might have been from the other Okie in Collinsville
near Tulsa. Or a remote possibility, an abandoned Part 15 RF feeder in
some parked car or residence in Enid, no input but left turned on. I
doubt this because of its wide range in town, not just around home
QTH.

In July I had a 101.5 log from KSMM and explained the confusion
between 92.9 & 93.9. At least since then, the ``silent`` notation
disappeared from 101.5 in the WTFDA DB. Except for a log in June on
101.5 also referring to 93.9 which I assumed was the OK pair rather
than KS, I had not had an Okeene 101.5 log since July of 2022,
including none since January 2023 -- tho as a semi-local would not
have paid much attention to it (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

This report dispatched at 2354 UT September 13

** EGYPT. 9440-, Sept 12 at 2157 JBA carrier direct from R. Cairo
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. Sept 12 I waste a sesquihour on the phone waiting for
OG&E agent to pick up in ``less than an hour``, before giving up.
Trying to get some axion on my week-ago complaint of intolerable line
noise level here and thru much of Enid. They need more agents! (Glenn
Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** TURKEY. 11785, Sept 12 at 2200, I am trying to hear VOT English
direct, but JBA carrier. Improves slightly by 2205, S5/S7 but mostly
unreadable, heavy flutter vertically in strength, horizontally in
frequency. WWV reported at 2100:

``Solar-terrestrial indices for 12 September follow.
Solar flux 154 and estimated planetary A-index 26.
The estimated planetary K-index at 2100 UTC on 12 September was 3.33.

Space weather for the past 24 hours has been moderate.
Geomagnetic storms reaching the G2 level occurred.
Radio blackouts reaching the R1 level occurred.

Space weather for the next 24 hours is predicted to be minor.
Geomagnetic storms reaching the G1 level are expected.
Radio blackouts reaching the R1 level are likely.``

** U S A. 18164 USB, Sept 12 at 2057, pileups here trying to contact
W6F in Kingman, Arizona, apparently a Route 66 special event. Op
sounds like a YL, in the clear, then more pileups; worked a KP4. Heard
again at next check 2158 but not the pileups. QRZ.com:

Welcome to the Hualapai Amateur Radio Club (HARC)

We wish to thank the Citrus Belt for allowing us to activate W6F this
year. We are thrilled to be making new friends and rekindling previous
contacts throughout this event. In just a two day period we have made
about 1000 contacts and so when you hear Whiskey 6 Foxtrot please give
us a call. Our goal is to ensure you make your clean sweep of all
Route 66 stations from the "Mother Road", but specifically W6F out of
Kingman, AZ!

Requesting a QSL card is easy, just send to the P.O. Box address
listed above, your confirming QSL card and a Self Addressed Stamped
Envelope. Upon completion of the event we will start sending out the
confirming cards as quickly as possible.

If you would like more information on our club please visit our

** U S A. 15825, Sept 12 at 2017, WWCR still S9+10 despite prop

** EGYPT. 9439.995, Sept 11 at 2155, R. Cairo, S9+20/30 into UTwente,
with ME song, plenty modulation but distorted. Something`s always
egregious in Egypt. Earlier in the 2115+ English sesquihour, heard no
signal direct (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** MALDIVES [non]. 11620, my latest report of V of Martyrs Korea,
Dhivehi service at 1500-1530, that widely assumed site Uzbekistan is
unbelievable - strong regular signal with no polar path disruptions,
and more likely Kununurra, Australia, or maybe Taiwan, led to further
discussion in the WOR iog. Wolfgang Bueschel:

``Target Radio on 11620 kHz shortwave 25 meterband? Why these question
marks already and y e t? It disappoints me already, that this target
radio service outlet, 11620 kHz has not yet led to a clear transmitter
centre assignment YET. Why can't DXers of professional performance in
South Asia, Japan, Korea, Pacific and Australia, New Zealand make a
true DIRECTION FINDING assignment of this transmission? vy73 wolfie
df5sx wwdxc topnews``

Reply from Mauno Ritola, WRTH: ``No need any more, it is Kununurra as
listed in
https://wrth.info/ainternational-summer-schedules-update/
Best regards, Mauno``

DF5SX@darc.de kirjoitti 11.9.2023 klo 13.12: ``re 11620 kHz target
radio program Voice of Martyrs - Kununurra site origin is true?
Thanks Mauno for your WRTH Summer A23 season product PDF file. Have
seen WRTH page #639 or PDF #14 page item of RBA site in Australia,
noted just Sept 11 at 1505 UT 11824.990 kHz of RBA Burmese outlet,
usual all Kununurra txions are oddly some minus 10 to minus 30 Hertz
on
lower sideband. but today 11620 kHz in English noted at 15 UT on much
e x a c t 11620 kHz -- as usual noted from Tashkent Uzbekistan
bcast center site outlets instead. 73 wolfie``

Mauno: ``Oh. My experience is vice versa: Tashkent is mostly off. Now
at 1540: 9649.95 kHz, 11529.83 kHz, 15629.85 kHz, 7509.93 kHz,
12080.01 kHz. 73, Mauno``

gh: I agree, Tashkent *is* habitually offset-minus, but I can`t be
sure it apply to all their transmitters/relays. So how are you
positive it`s Australia, any more than other sources which treat
Uzbekistan as if it be positive. The real question is why, from the
outset of the Maldives service, site has been treated as confidential
by VOMK, never registered in HFCC; especially since VOMK already uses
Kununurra openly for other services, such as Korean and Myanmarianese.
That seems to raise the question whether it`s really, really secret
somewhere else (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 17855, Mon Sept 11 at 2200, token English from SNR, VG
S9+10/20 into Maryland SDR and also the other three are not off; the
two YLs as usual, previewing feature interview about Javier Marías,
novelist, columnist and translator who died one year ago today (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 11785.009, Sept 11 at 2157, VOT IS and English IDs, VG
S9+50 into UTwente, somewhat overmodulated/distorted. Badax delivers
the news which runs much longer than usual, finishing with football
scores, until 2222 `Review of the Turkish Press` for two more minutes.
2224 distorted song. 2227 `Did You Know That` about a new kind of
chickpea. 2230 two-minute multilingual ID filler reel. 2232 song. Next
feature talk about vaccines, punxuated by pauses for bits of ``La
Bamba`` theme of `New Day, New Choices`. 2242 ``always by your side``,
song. 2247 ``every hour every day``. 2248 `Feeling Supreme/The Healing
Supring` on the benefits of grape molasses. Ends just in time for
s/off at 2253, standard criticism. 2255 ~7 note fragment of IS and
chopoff, no finesse. Something`s always awry at Ankara and/or
erroneous at Emirler (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** UKRAINE [and non]. WRMI skedgrid still shows a relay of RUI,
presumably mostly in UU, daily except for a Friday gospel huxter at
1200-1300 on 5010 southward, which is hardly helpful in most of North
America. I had not tried to hear RUI`s brief daily newscast in English
for quite a while, `Ukraine; Security Issue`. The bookmark I had no
longer worx. On UT Sept 10, I found it here by sliding the time to
approx. 03:00 [local], click on it there and away it goes, this time
for only 4 minutes:
http://www.nrcu.gov.ua/channel.html?channelID=4&progID=954&sliderIndex=6
Also linx day by day back to many previous editions. Axually the
latest program kept playing for a lot more than 4 minutes in English,
with a ``weekly`` show following (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2207 monitoring: confirmed Sunday
September 10 at 2020 the 2000 on IRRS SW via AM Italia 1323, S9+15/20
with lite CCI as usual, Brighton not closed forever yet; and noise
from storm crashes.

Also confirmed Sun Sept 10 at 2020 the 2000 on WRN Europe webcast; and
still not on WRMI webcast-only, rather very familiar tunes in `world
music` fill.

Also confirmed UT Monday September 11 at 0030 on WRMI 7780, S9/+10
into Georgia SDR but noisy, and with usual QRM noise blast for 14+
seconds stomping upon me exactly when I start.

Also confirmed UT Monday September 11 from 0301.5 on Area 51 via WBCQ
6160 - 68 Hz = 6159.932, S9+12 into NH SDR. Was ACI de 6165 Turkey,
especially timesignal at 0300. Next:

Glenn Hauser, PO Box 1684, Enid OK 73702 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 5130+, Sept 11 at 0303, WBCQ`s Trump transmitter is still
off the air, after a godly lightning strike. Hint2 (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** U S A. An expedition some 10/15 miles north of Enid allows me to
check 1550 KKLE Winfield KS better than I can hear it at home. In a
previous report I heard sibling station 1130 KLEY in nearby Wellington
utter a joint ID for them as well as several FM outlets. But Sept 10
at 1943 UT they are certainly not //: one caradio but tuning back and
forth, 1550 with music, 1130 with ad. After 2000, KKLE goes from a
banjo bluegrass tune, to country, which is exactly the format listed
in the new NRC AM Log. KLEY however sounds more rockish to me than
country whenever I check it, and it has been modulating lately. Never
heard the slogan ``Red Dirt Country``. BTW an FCC report says the FM
translator of 1130, which is all that matters, has changed from 100.3
to 104.1 MHz, unknown why. 100.3 was relatively clear but never heard
this far away, and 104.1 is impossible with OKC fullpower on it.

Another check on the caradio inside Enid, Sept 11 circa 2005 UT: 1130
KLEY ID jointly for KKLE and two FMs, probably their translators. But
once again, 1550 with weaker but sufficient signal is NOT // 1130!!
Playing bluegrass while 1130 goes on with classic rock. True, I have
not heard how 1550 IDs, but it can`t be the Okie, KYAL Sapulpa/Tulsa
which is a Sports Animal. At 2143 on home rig, 1550 promos as
bluegrass 24/7; and I think My Town Media, as below. Does have a fast
SAH, probably de KYAL.

These stations used to belong to Rocking M Media LLC, as if on a
branding iron, M atop an arc, as still shown at radio-locator; but FCC
LMS, which is allegedly kept more up to date than ``unexpected
error``, AM Query, says licensee is My Town Media Inc., but expired
01/04/2023! which would seem to imply it should be off the air. Ditto
for KLEY. But ``Facility Status Date` is 08/12/2021! That`s MM/DD/YYYY
format per other entries (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 1550 kHz, Sept 10 at 2359 UT on E/W LW, I`m checking still
tuned here for a legal ID from KKLE, q.v. No call letters, but
``greatest hits of all time, Motown(?) 107.5``. Looking thru all 56
entries on 1550 in the new NRC AM Log, it`s not the first one, WLOR
Huntsville AL, 50000/44 watts which does have a puny FM translator on
``107.5, The Beat``. But gotta be this, also likelier by proximity:
KESJ St. Joseph MO, 2500/500, ``Joe Town 107.5``! Another translator
tail wagging the AM dog (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 101.5, Sept 10 from 1900 UT on an expedition some 10/15
miles north of Enid, I stick mostly to this frequency trying to
ID/sort out the fringe Spanish. Mostly unreadable, traces of Mexmx,
but a couple momentary peaks at 1915 and 1921 say `La Mexicana`, ergo
KSMM Liberal KS and not either Okie. Thataway there is more ACI from
101.3 Wichita (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
