Glenn Hauser logs July 23, 2022 - Es FM DX from NW  View Printable Version
Monday, July 25 2022

Hauser
** CANADA. Note there are a few Canadian logs in my USA [and non] UT
July 23 sporadic E FM DX report in chronological order

** OKLAHOMA. There are some incidental state logs mixed in with USA
[and non] FM DX report in chronological order for July 23

** U S A [and non]. Another big sporadic E opening, Friday evening, UT
Saturday July 23 from the NW centered on Montana; nexus for most paths
is over S/E Wyoming. A few from Alberta. Also Idaho, as far as into
Washington state. Would love to get some BC, possible from SE corner,
but not this time. Just one bit of ND and of SD. A few lead to
low-power translators. Quotes from WTFDA FM Database.

All u.o.s. on Nissan 2004 stock caradio parked in hot garage, with
daily highs well 100+; vertical fender antenna only, no RDS, no
even-frequency side-tuning, no internet access until later research.
No recordings. All logged in real time by my own ears on own receiver,
no remotes to compare with streams. All times UT in chronological
order; including some Oklahoma spoilers. PTA = probable target area.

I am not counting stations, states or anything and not in competition.
Rather, each DX log is a potential learning experience. Some are
presumed or circumstantial, and any correxions or help with IDing are
very welcome. Distances approx., city-of-license to Enid, not site to
site, from distancefromto.net Showing distances does not necessarily
imply more definite logs, but pertinent info.

92.3 at 0012, M&W plugging Disney movie, music over talk; 0015, ``The
Most Music and the Most Hits, 92-3 and 95-3, Star ## Radio``. No hits
on slogan but on Star and two-freq match, and see more at 0112:
KKMT 92.3 RONAN MT CONTEMPORARY HIT RADIO STAR 92 60.0 kW 707.0 m ---
1819 km = 1130 mi; and the 95.3, not heard, would be:
K237GF relays:KKMT 92.3 95.3 KALISPELL MT CONTEMPORARY HIT RADIO STAR

94.5 at 0013, country; 0016, text 548-82-88, ``Today`s country, Chad?
94-5`` -- must have been Max. Further: at 0028, ``Accu-weather

0038, adstring including MT Dept of Transportation; The Man Shop in
Great Falls; 0046 The Man Shop, which is barber in GF:
KMON-FM 94.5 GREAT FALLS MT COUNTRY 94.5 MAX COUNTRY 98.0 kW 151.0 m

96.7 at 0017, country, fade; also at 0030; 0035 plug Women`s Expo, AC

Great Falls ad, which is bigger city S of Shelby; 0058 country/rock.
Again much later at 0228, 761-7650, JCPenny, ``Wide Open Country T?-96

KZIN-FM 96.7 SHELBY MT COUNTRY K-96 WIDE OPEN COUNTRY 100.0 kW 168.0 m

97.1 at 0018, interview with kidvoice, briefly vs local 96.9 ACI;
unlikely the CHR in Billings outside PTA, KKBR, but two relig MTs:
KALS 97.1 KALISPELL MT RELIGIOUS TEACHING YOUR NETWORK OF PRAISE 26.5
kW 758.0 m YNOP-Your Network of Praise www.ynop.org --- 1877 km = 1166

97.3 at 0019, ``Hail Mary, full of grace``, fade. Nevermore in 2+

KNEH-LP 97.3 HELENA MT RELIGIOUS TEACHING 0.1 kW -71.0 m horiz only
BELOW average terrain HELENA CMTY EDUCATIONAL ASSN --- 1630 km = 1013

A stronger possibility might be this, just west of Spokane WA, except
it`s on the KRTM network, evangelical but not overtly Catholic:
KKRS relays:KRTM 88.1 97.3 DAVENPORT WA RELIGIOUS TEACHING 5.1 kW

There is another AB country further north, unlikely:
CKGY-FM 95.5 RED DEER AB CAN COUNTRY REAL COUNTRY 95.5 100.0 kW 256.5

93.5 at 0021 FRENCH Canadian chat briefly, likely CBC. Unless it`s a
spoiler leftover via a separate opening from Kenora ON, as I concluded
earlier this summer,
CKSB-7-FM relays:CKSB-1050 93.5 KENORA ON CAN French NEWS/TALK ICI

ZP is a bilingual village in the NE part of inhabited SK, i.e. east
central overall. Can`t find it exactly on my atlas. There are lots of
low-powers in MB; only 93.5 in AB is full power in English commercial

92.9 at 0022, Grace Veterans Homeless Center is having a bash 7/22.

91.9 at 0024, CCI preacher and music. One probably my fringer:

93.7 at 0028, CCI to KSPI Stillwater OK; 0043-0046+ dead air! from DX

finally install the box fan in the back seat of car for a little
relief as this opening is prolonging.]

97.5 at 0034, CCI including an online pharmacy phone 452-0205 only

also be from a nearby fringer

96.3 at 0037, pet vet ad. Besides two xltrs in MT, two full-powers,

** ALGERIA [and non]. 15340 was first reported by Jorge Freitas,
Brasil, to the WOR iog as unID in Arabic, July 22 at 2345. It remained
on air long into the night and then numerously monitored. Ultimately
concluding that TDA is *finally* on air, testing at least from own
site(s) inside Algeria, besides the long-standing relays via France.

Otherwise occupied, I did not get on it until 2030 July 23, and posted
at 2043: ``So do we have both sites suddenly testing? Altho not
adhering to registered times, 17600 is supposedly Béchar and 15340
Ourgla. 15340 is S5-S6 into UTwente, going from Arabic talk to song at
2030. If you can hear both, see if they are exactly synchronized; and
compare to ISSoudun?``

``Glenn, they're in sync. Reception from Feira de Santana-BA, Brazil
https://youtube.com/shorts/DnjQvclsfqg?feature=share
73 Jorge Freitas, Feira de Santana, Bahia 12°14´S 38°58´W -
Brasil, Tecsun PL-660, XHDATA, Antena Delta Loop e LW 20 metros``

``Jorge, Tnx for discovering and following this. Listening via
UTwente: at 2055, 15100 much stronger than 15340; woman mainly in
Arabic, but mixing in some French - an Algerian thing, I guess. After
2100 the two ISSouduns are still on, 5930 much better than 9585, with
different Arabic programming than 15100. Glenn``

15100 an unregistered frequency, also discovered by Jorge Freitas.
Here`s HFCC to look for other possible frequencies.
http://hfcc.org/data/schedbybrc.php?seas=A22&broadc=TDA
The Ourgla frequencies registered, mostly for a few hours each: 7430,
15340, 15700, 17550, 9835, 13600; Bechar: 9750, 7205, 9750, 15680,
17600, 21500, 15250. TDA had been registering extensive skeds for many
years, but delay after delay in getting new sites on air. Will the
ISSoudun relays soon be dropped? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98 RCUSB, July 23 at 1518-1558, no signal from
LRA36 into Argentine remote, missing another Saturday. Might have come
and gone before my late tune-in but Gary Pence was not hearing it
earlier at 1509 via same remote (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA. For a change, sporadic E opening with only *one* log into
caradio, standard provisos: 94.5, July 23 at 1801 UT, ``The music you
want to hear, CHAT-FM, Medicine Hat``, country. WTFDA DB:
CHAT-FM 94.5 MEDICINE HAT AB COUNTRY TODAY'S COUNTRY CHAT 94.5 100.0
kW H&V, 176.0 mH only --- 1833 km = 1139 statute miles, city to Enid.
I remember DXing their TV station in the analog era on channel 6; now
virtual, really RF 36, far beyond DX Es MUF possibility.

I`m still working on researching and compiling logs of huge July 23 Es
opening including some other Albertans, lots of Montanans and
vicinities (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 13630 approx., July 23 at 1452, RHC spurblob with F# tone,
mod better audible in AM than FM; out of 13700 transmitter which is
S9/+10. Not much of a match on 13770, and just traces at second-orders
circa 13834? and 13560 vs constant local RFID? beepery. Something`s
always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** UKRAINE [non]. 7730, July 24 at 0500-0507, UR1 via WRMI, VG via
Maryland remote, `Ukraine: Security Issue` for July 23 = Day 150 of
Putin`s war; including, Russians shelled Odesa despite ``agreement``
to allow grain exports: cannot be trusted; estimated 3000 missiles
have been fired into Ukraine since war started (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2148 monitoring: confirmed Saturday
July 23 at 1600 on WRN North America webcast. Missed checking July 23
at 1930 on WA0RCR.

Confirmed UT Sunday July 24 at 0030 on WRMI 7780, S7/S5 into Maryland
SDR after Etón ad at 0029.

Also confirmed UT Sunday July 24 at 0324 on WA0RCR, 1860 AM, MO, S6/S8
into nearby SDR but with heavy storm noise from a front between NM and
MN, about 6 minute into so started circa 0328.

``Hi Glenn, Just a note to confirm reception of WOR 2148 on WMRI
Europe (via Channel 292) on 9670 kHz Sunday 24 July, wrapping up at
1402 UTC. Best wishes - Alan Roe, Teddington, UK`` Next:

** U S A. 9330.013, July 23 at 0627, WLCR/WBCQ S7/S9 in English,
achieving closer to accurate frequency but still doubt it`s the 500
kW. They may switch back to it without notice, since they never
acknowledged switching away from it (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Hauser
** CANADA [and non]. July 23 at 0021-0026 UT I had two Calgary FM
stations in a huge almost 3-hour sporadic E opening mainly from
Montana and NW states: 92.9, CFEX-FM a.k.a. X92.9; 92.1, CJAY-FM
a.k.a. CJ-92; and something in French on 93.5, the closest being
CBKF-FM-3 in Zenon Park, Sask. These will be reported in full once the
whole report has been researched and compiled (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. Correxion: these were on July 18, not 17, entirely fixed:

96.7 FM, July 18 at 1646 UT, lexure in Spanish
during big mixed sporadic E and tropo openings; 1658 song with refrain
``Guajira``. 1659, ``Rebelde, La Habana, Emisora de la Revolución,
1700 ``Noticiero Nacional de Radio``. 1711 still in with Cuban
mentions, national weather summary, 1713 ``NN de R`` program ID again,
``en AM, FM y Onda Corta``.

Cuban FM DX is rare here, mostly too far for single-hop sporadic E,
but Habana is possible at 2095 km = 1302 miles, and westward. WTFDA FM
Database has three Rebeldes on 96.7, Bayamo and Moa too far, but this
must be:

CMBA-FM 96.7 CD. HABANA CH NEWS/TALK/VARIETY RADIO REBELDE 1.0 kWH 0.0
kWV 100.0 m HAAT 23-07-16 82-18-54 REBELDE Tx site Loma de la
Cruz/Regla
There are three other non-Rebelde 96.7s, one further west, R Mantua,
but presumably would not be RR relayers at midday. Only 1 kW
horizontal only, not very impressive for a flagship!?

Meanwhile I am hunting for other Cubans! Only one possibility:
99.1, July 18 at 1703, some CCI in Spanish. Besides two low-power
translators, this is the only full-power, and same site as 96.7:
CMBF-FM 99.1 CD. HABANA CH CLASSICAL/OPERA/ARTS RADIO MUSICAL NACIONAL
8.0 kWH only 100.0 m 23-07-16 82-18-54 RADIO TAINO Tx site Loma de la
Cruz/Regla --- R. Taíno is in the ``PS Info`` column, not sure what
that mean in practice (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2148)

** EGYPT. 9439.995, July 22 at 2152, NO signal of R. Cairo English
into UTwente (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** HAWAII. 8764-USB, July 22 at 0623, robotic marine weather citing
geo coordinates in the Pacific, S9 peaks but rough modulation. USCG
broadcasts are typically poorly modulated, something which any ham
would not put up with from his own station. EiBi shows NMO, USCG
Honolulu at 0600-0635. Its other times: 0005-0040, 1200-1235,
1800-1835; while frequency is timeshared with many more broadcasts
from USCG NMN Chesapeake VA and NMC Point Reyes CA. XSR Haikou Radio
could also be there 24h in Mandarin, and XSU Yantai Radio at 07-21,
unheard now (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 17855, Friday July 22 at 2200, REE timesignal, and --- NO
token English without explanation, instead something in Castilian
about Canciones Ténebres; usual good signal anyway into Maryland SDR.
English supposed to be M/W/F 2200-2230; maybe they ran out of rerun
material? Google translate insists that Tenebres is Catalan; but
further research implies originally French denoting darkness (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830+, July 22 at 2200, VOT succeeds transmitting the
English almost-hour, S9+25/35 into UTwente, BUT with constant
squealing, characteristic I guess of one particular transmitter or
feedline, as happens occasionally. Something`s always erroneous at
Emirler. Opening news emphasizes the Ukra/Rusky agreement about grain
shipments reached in Türkiye. Also, new frequency, 9830.017
ex-9830.021 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** UKRAINE [non]. 7730, July 23 at 0500-0507, UR1 via WRMI, `Ukraine:
Security Issue` including Russia has lost 39,000 troops; 5000 reports
of children forcibly deported; Russia still stealing grain from
farmers; ports blockaded, but agreement to allow some exports reached
in Turkey. Good as usual via Maryland SDR (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2148 monitoring: confirmed first
broadcasts, UT Friday July 22 at 0130 on WRMIs: 5850, S9+20/30; 7730,
S9/+10 direct, both noisy.

Also confirmed UT Friday July 22 at 0330 on WRMI 7780, S8/S9 direct.

Also confirmed Friday July 22 at 1430 on WRMI 9955, S9/S6 direct,
trace of jamming. Next:

Also confirmed Friday July 22 at 1815.8 on IRRS SW via Bulgaria, 7290,
S7/S8 into UTwente and also on AM Italia, 1323 & 918 kHz about the
same into Noale SDR, but not 207 kHz; to completion almost 1845; then
fill music, 1849 UN News interview about a musician who had an
accident in Sardinia. 1857* 7290 chopped off already while 1323 & 918
continue with music. Also tuned in earlier: 1323 & 918 at 1758
``welcome to Country Jamboree`` for the week of July 17, just in time
to be chopped off at 1800 for IRRS `SW` ID and FSN; while as always,
7290 did not chop on until 1800.8, JIP FSN including Spotlite segment
at 1803, 1805 IRRS ID with Milano PO Box otherwise denied, music. 1813
bird calls and open TUC Radio, about effects of climate change on
marine life, just in time to be chopped off at 1815 for another long
IRRS SW ID and then WOR.

Also confirmed Fri July 22 at 2030.3 on AM Italia 918 & 1323,
following IRRS SW ID claiming that it`s on reduced carrier USB, which
it is not; besides not even being on SW air ever at this hour. Tuned
in at 2028 to a show of music from Ulster, before it`s chopped short.
1323 has ACI seemingly Romania on both sides 1314 & 1332, and now fast
SAH and CCI which could also be Romania.

Also confirmed UT Saturday July 23 after 0130 on WRMI 9395, JBA on
caradio amid a huge FM DX opening from the NW.

Also confirmed UT Saturday July 23 at 0400 on WBCQ Radio Angela,
5129.971, S9/+10 but noisy into Maryland SDR; PEI is offline. Next:

** U S A. (7489.9v), UT Sat July 23 at 0000, WBCQ webcast of `AAAWWW`,
soon obvious as new since refers to last week`s show about the
Webbscope. Once again, Angela is remote on a lo-fi phoneline. But I am
called to the car for FM DXing for almost 3 hours. Once again, I
request if anyone else listen to this show and hear any significant
info about WBCQ, such as new programming, technical matters such as
the crashing SuperStition, buying up other SW stations, please report
it to the WOR iog or to me (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 5129.971, UR Sat July 12 at 0252-0300, managed to catch a
few minutes of Greek Music Refuge, new show on WBCQ R. Angela,
presented by Bill Tilford, but our longtime DX contributor Zacharias
Liangas says he compiled the playlist. In the absence of ERT on SW any
more. S9+10 but noisy storm crashes into Maine SDR (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** U S A [and non]. After a few days of tantalizing not-quite sporadic
E FM DX paths to OK, UT Sat July 23 at 0000 I see MUFs exceeding 100
MHz to the NW of here on DXMAPs, so head for the hot car in the
garage. I`m there for almost 3 hours of continuous DXing, centered on
Montana, but also from Alberta, Idaho, Washington, South Dakota at
least. Occupying 5 pages in my log notebook, it will take some time to
research and compile completely (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 7849.3 LSB, July 22 at 0619, weak 2-way seems Spanish,
vs QRM from CHU as I am investigating its vestigial LSB. Never notice
it in normal USB or AM tuning (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

closer in Guthrie (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** UKRAINE [non]. 7730, July 21 at 0500-0507, UR1 via WRMI, `Ukraine:

terrorism against Ukrainian civilians; forced labor and deportations

** U S A. DXMAP shows Es FM DX possibly reaching OK from the east,
July 21 at 1515 UT, so I try the caradio, yet nothing to show but some
tropo-enhanced Kansans:

93.7 at 1520, community bank ad with branches in towns such as
Minneapolis, Ellsworth -- yes, Kansas, not Minnesota. 93.7 anti-Kris
Kobach political ad for Atty General in Republican primary; says he`s
a loser in all his previous runs for other offices, and godforbid a
Democrat should become AG. Salina/Abilene ad, Y-93.7:

94.5 at 1523, pro-Kris Kobach for Atty Genl ad, sounds like voiced by

Capitol Federal Weather Center, just numbers, no local references! But
ID as ``94.5 Country`` with the most music in a row once it start:
