** U S A. (7490v), UT Sat Feb 25 from 0100, WBCQ, a new `AAAWWW` and
right from the start Allan is in a big rant, sounds really mad about
everything, yet all framed as a prayer to his deity. I`ve never heard
him before so upset. Denounces Putin and other authoritarians, but
also denounces Pres. Biden as a ``puppet`` --- that implies there must
be a puppet master, but he never identifies that; not sure I want to
know. Anyhow thinx world would be in a much better situation if T****
were still in power. Angela occasionally chimes in support. I let
myself listen to this diatribe for a semihour before switching to
someone I agree with 100% at 0130 on WRMI 5850. Recheck 0150 now
skimming a new Free Radio Weekly, which arrived in time since this is
an off-week for alternating editor Turnick. Mostly he just names
pirate and frequency without much further detail such as time or
reporter, so not much use to casual listener, and besides, pirates are
notoriously frequency-flexible (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 1170, special MW DX test scheduled from WDFB, a 1 kW
direxional daytimer in Junxion City near Danville KY for Sat Feb 25 at
0501-0701 UT. This will be tough to OK with KTSB Tulsa 50 kW directly
in the way, unnullable. First I check near remotes to confirm whether
it`s really on the air. Closest at Lexington KY gets nothing on 1170!
Knoxville TN: W8BUG which I once found useful, gets it neither, but
another in K-town, KB5AG, succeeds, so I stay on it for a while. At
0510, continuous tone, then sweeps upward, a sure sign of a DX test
even without an ID.

Unfortunately we have to listen to an 1170 gospel huxter at same time,
suspected Brother Scare on WWVA OH. TOMBS sked shows at 11 pm-midnight
only, 04-05 UT. WWVA site, can`t find any full program sked: they must
be ashamed of anything but a few major talkshows hilited. At first
sounds much like BS but can`t make a match to 7570 even considering
way out of synch. At 0514 I first hear definite Morse code IDs as VVV
VVV VVV DE WDFB - repeated maybe 5 times. As a Christian station,
preaching was planned to be mixed with the test tones etc.; if so, I
never heard any nor vocal IDs, maybe indistinguishable from the QRM.

1170 has two major 50 kW occupants, WWVA Wheeling WV with site in OH;
and KTSB Tulsa OK. Each of them protects the other at night, leaving a
mid-continent gap occupied by many minor stations from MN to FL,
mostly daytimers, or if at night, low power and direxional. At 0518 I
try direct on my E/W longwire and R75. KTSB is not the powerhouse you
would expect for 50 kW direxional west; less than 200 km away, maybe
too close for much skywave, and there is QRM from others. At 0518 I
first try for WDFB direct: maybe, a 1 kHz tone, but nothing
recognizable as Morse code or sweeps which would have clinched it even
without a callsign ID. One more try direct at 0630-0635: at first I
think I hear a tone vs stupid sports talk on The Blitz. Not enough to
be definite and of course I will not seek a QSL nor would I want one.

Everything else in this report is via the Knoxville remote: 0528 code
and sweeps up; 0531 tone; 0532 VVV ID as above. 0533 sweeps up; 0534
step tones upward, then sweeps up; 0540 fast Morse code, again 0551.
0611 sweeps up; 0612 phone-off-hook noise; 0613 fast Morse, VVV IDs
again; 0620 fast Morse as I turn off the computer. Tnx for the test,

14336 USB, Feb 24 at 2145 I`m camping on some others already tuned
here via Argentine SDR. Promptly at *2200 starts CW ID as LU1ZV, and
YL voice calling CQ, Radio -- Antártida Argentina in Spanish, dial
tuning noises but not music; S9. Then M reads a prepared script in
Spanish making some of these points: radio comms started in 1927y in
Orcadas del Sur. ``La radio vive en la Antártida``; first broadcast
``en Antártida Argentino`` as masculine. 2204 explains that original
10 kW LRA36 transmitter has been out of service for years. New
transmitter is a Collins solid state with 300 watt amp to be in use by
2024. 2206 ID and signal drops briefly into S5 noise level. 2207 says
old transmitter was running less than 70 watts. Hamwise, has made FT8
contacts on 6m, and also on 160m. 2210 YL with contact info, whatsapp
number and gmail only. Cites 3 or 4 LU8 hams; and Adrián Korol of RAE
as LU1CQM. CW ID again and 2211 pause. 2212 starts 2-way contacts with
Argentina, Brasil on same frequency. 2217 says will repeat show in
English in one hour. 2218 says this hamshow will be airing again at 20
local = 23z on Sat & Sun. Quick check direct here: nothing heard. SDR
thinx I am in Kingwood TX! After 2225 more 2-way contacts I don`t
attend.

14336 USB, Feb 24 promptly at 2300 again, CW sending ANTARTIDA ---
LU1ZV AR making S9+5 via same remote; in English: CQ, CQ, CQ,
Argentine Antarctic Radio Bulletin; and story about ``madmen of the
rooftops``, the first radio listeners initially the same as hams.
About South Orkney comms in 1927y. This is first broadcast of
Argentine Antarctic Radio Bulletin. About the 2023y
Culture-is-Sovereignty Plan. LRA36 broadcasting content from Radio
Nacional. Recent 15476 broadcasts have been heard in Iceland,
Indonesia, Ukraine, Europe, North America. Had 10 kW CCA transmitter
for years, open wire and rhombic antennas. Current transmitter will
be retained as backup for the new one next year. But with only 70
watts has reached beyond 10 megameters. 2310 address for this is

2312 immediately back to Spanish for 2-way contacts on same frequency

also shows 5800 at 04-05 with Prague in English, Spanish - all of this
missing!

Now on the WRMI program info page you will find *no* mention of
F.S.R.; nor R. República even on the System sked pages. 17 months ago
I said, ``Freedom Synergy Radio, the dispensable Falungong anti-PRC show``.

9490.07, Feb 23 at 0456, weak carrier here as if the Issoudun, FRANCE
transmitter of RMI`s Radio República still be on, typically
off-frequency. Persistent jamming is also often audible here some

** U S A. 720, Feb 23 at 0058-0116 UT, I`m on the DX398 positioned to
null WGN as much as possible, for any sign of KDWN Las Vegas, the one
in NV, during the final week of its life: no show, just some other
weak signals, mostly musical; most likely KSAH in TX if not México or
Nicaragua. Official Feb sunset for KDWN is 0115 UT when it should
switch from 25 kW ND day, to 7.5 kW direxional night protecting WGN.
The current terminator/grayline at 0100 is circa the AZ/NM border, so
skywave propagation eastward ought to be starting soon if not already.
Reverse at 1430 UT sunrise not explored yet, unless I happen to awaken
by then.

This is in preparation for the DX special, UT Wed March 1 at 0759-0809
UT when KDWN CE has agreed to run 25 kW test at night one last time,
but unknown whether will be ND. In order to help other easterners DX
that, I suggested to the CPC that WGN could be asked to turn itself
off for that brief period --- that was met with derision and insults
on the IRCA iog, tho a few brave DXers backed my out-of-the-box
idea.

I myself do not `need` to DX KDWN, as I have logged it before such as
in *2015y*, when it was suspected of not following the rules:

``720, Sept 20 at 1213 UT, ``Live in Las Vegas`` talk show from
``K-Dawn``, 257-5396 = KDWN, also asking for tweets, on subject Syria
could become a proxy war between USA and Russia. Really, live call-in
at 5 am Sunday --- I guess so in a city that never sleeps. Per
gaisma.com, today`s real dawn in LV doesn`t start until 1301 UT, and
sunrise at 1327. Enid`s sunrise is 1218 UT.

Better signal here than on 840 KXNT which I got first prompting me to
try 720. Once again, not in keeping with KDWN night pattern of a
cardioid null toward WGN, rather than ND day pattern; or do I enjoy a
propagational pipeline from LV NV? See also 1140 UNID (Glenn Hauser,
OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)``

Aside from the `pure DX` loss of a chance to hear NV in the East, I
say good riddance, as their program sked shows far-right-liar Sean
Hannity in prime time and another Faux host, Brian Kilmeade. The other
names I do not recognize, maybe locals and I bet not one of them the
least bit `liberal`.

However, Stephen Luce comments as of Feb 23: ``Although KDWN and KXST
are going silent, the licenses have not yet been surrendered. Still a
small possibility one or both could be resurrected under new
ownership. Whether it makes any business sense to do so is up for

doubt KLEY Wellington KS by groundwave, same as pre-sunset. Also some

** VANUATU. 7260, Feb 23 at 0800, R. Vanuatu, S8/S9 talk but
unreadable; and no VON neighboring on 7255- (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 9510, Feb 23 at 0757, again that open carrier except for
some hum, S5/S6 fading and some split-second breaks (Glenn Hauser, OK,

** KIRITIMATI. 846 kHz, Feb 22 at 0743, JBA carrier from R. Kiribati.
Checking Oahu SDR this date, Gary Pence, KM5X, reported: trace seen at
0741 but not at 0918. Wednesday has sometimes been an off-night for
them (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 9690, Wed Feb 22 at 2305, token English from SNR on subject
which does not grab me, so I`m mainly hearing simulTURKEY, q.v. But
all four frequencies are on in usual descending quality > 12030 >
11940 > 11685 into Maryland SDR. BTW, JRX in Paraíba says 9690 for NAm
is better there than 11940 for SAm. At 2315 interview about a Badajoz
carnaval and museum, and then about the same in Santa Cruz de
Tenerife, which she says is second only to the carnaval in Rio (Glenn

** TURKEY. 5960.003+, Feb 22 at 2301, VOT English makes in on air
today unlike last two nights, VG S9+30/40 into UTwente; news mainly EQ
stats such as official death toll now at 42,310. 2311 `Review of
Turkish Press` ending, also about that. 2312 promo acknowledging S&R
teams from abroad. 2313 `Whipping Piles` (?) about AI, such as a
painting program, Canvas. 2318 `Weekly Commentary` about PKK
terrorists [or sometimes sounds more like tourists] by
heavily-accented YL, and now she also has the CCCCCCI from XJPBS, std
denunciation, to cope with; criticising PKK for continuing to carry
out attax despite the EQ damage. 2324 outro inviting anyone to submit
their opinions by email for possible broadcast, and credit for this
one by name and institution totally unreadable. Music break until 2333
`Feeling Supreme/The Healing Spring`, something about an anti-oxidant
supplement involving the liver; 2340 bit of theme music but continues
with more of same till 2342, then music break. After 2330 I`m mainly
attending NBC Afternoonly News. 2352 squeezes in the multi-lingual ID
filler reel, but chopped off the air at 2353.7* amid Swahili before
completed; so we don`t even get any standard s/off or IS. Opening
frequency for XJPBS now in the clear. Something`s always erroneous at
Emirler (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 1130, Feb 22 at 2139 UT, dead air at S7 from KLEY Wellington
KS, still so at 2208; and at 2255 when an understation has become
audible, no doubt KWKH. This shows you how seriously Rocking M Media
takes its broadcasting business. Long spans of dead air or off-air
have happened several times before. I wonder if their 100.3 translator
still modulate; doesn`t reach here. BTW, radio-locator.com shows there
is another KLEY on FM 95.7 in Jourdanton TX, presumably unrelated; as
FCC abandoned the idea of unique callsigns years ago if both parties
agreed to share. KLEY in KS has a sibling station on 1550 in nearby
Winfield, KKLE where I am not hearing it; had been reactivated at
least briefly some months ago // 1130 instead of two different
formats. 1130 carrier normally runs all night, modulated or not,
obviously 250 watt day power instead of one watt at night, to
detriment of KWKH which obviously does not care (Glenn Hauser, OK,

** VANUATU. 7260, Feb 22 around 0730, RV JBA here as usual, and no

UNIDENTIFIED. 9700, Feb 22 at 0726, S9+10 dead air and quite steady.
Currently a RNZP frequency not scheduled in Aoki & EiBi until *1651
much later; while 13755 is in well. Neither caught it that 9700 has
axually been heard as early as 1400 Feb 10, // 7390. Possibly a #2 NZ
transmitter test, but suspect RHCuba instead, while no other usual
frequencies are still on. Aoki reminds us Turkey here until 0656, EiBi

UNIDENTIFIED. 25975 LSB, Feb 22 at 2127, Brazilian 2-way;
26305.3 AM, Feb 22 at 2131, 2-way in English. I`m scanning the 11mb
portion 25800-26500 for any NBFM broadcast auxiliaries like KOVR`s on
26110, hitting nothing but these two (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
