Glenn Hauser logs April 23-24, 2023 |
|
Tuesday, April 25 2023
** CUBA. 6100, April 24 at 0630, RHC English still on proper frequency, during extreme propagation disturbance, but unusual flutter on S9/+10 signal, and also some `rumble`, unclear source of that. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** CUBA. 15140, April 24 at 2045, distorted Portuguese on one of few signals on band, S9+5/15 with squeal, and spurs about +/- 6.67 kHz. WRTH update does not show any PP at 2030, and 15140 supposed to stop at 2030 after French. Likewise per EiBi, while Aoki still shows winter timings of 2000-2100 English, 2100-2130 French! Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** SPAIN. 17855, April 24 at 2045, REE is SSOB direct, but much weaker than normal, not recovered from major geomag storm. Recheck 2227 toward end of token English, JBA carrier for us; but 15520 off the back for ME is sufficient as she is talking about Don Quijote (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2187 monitoring: confirmed Sunday April 23 at 2000 on IRRS SW via AM Italia, 1323 kHz, S9+10/20 into nearby Noale SDR but with heavy subaudible heterodyne (SAH) fading from an understation, less so by 2025. Also confirmed UT Monday April 24 at 0030 on WRMI 7780, S9/+10 into Louisiana SDR, but with heavy storm noise level (HSNL) from nearby Gulf of Mexico; also blasted first 14 seconds by noise transmitter. Also confirmed UT Monday April 24 from 0302 on WBCQ Area 51, during severe propagation disturbance, 6160 minus 66 Hz = 6159.934 into Maryland SDR also with HSNL from Gulf of Mexico? or smaller storms out toward Bermuda. Slightly better than into NH SDR. Direct? JBA carrier vs HSNL. Started slightly late after some SFX, also heard on webcast. Next: 0030 UT Tuesday WRMI 9395 to NNW 2330 UT Tuesday WRMI 9395 to NNW 1000 UT Wednesday Unique R, Australia 5035 USB [low power] 2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW 0030 UT Thursday WRMI 9395 to NNW 0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S Full schedule including AM, FM, webcasts, satellite, podcasts: http://www.worldofradio.com/radioskd.html Like our website, a noncommercial service for which financial support is appreciated; thanks this week to Dan Sheedy, Encinitas CA, for a generous contribution to Glenn Hauser, P O Box 1684, Enid OK 73702; ``Just wanted to wish you a happy birthday and throw a donation into the `WOR vat of consistently useful and accurate DX info`. Thanks for all your efforts to keep DX info non-trivial. Cheers, Dan`` One may also contribute via PayPal, not necessarily in US funds, to woradio at yahoo.com (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 5130 -16 Hz = 5129.984, UT Monday April 24 at 0200, WBCQ R. Angela is back! on the air, as Bill Tilford notified us a few hours earlier that Timtron had finally fixed the transmitter. Unfortunately this coincides with extreme propagation disturbance, and high storm noise levels. It`s `Concert Hall` with Sir Scratchy introducing UB, but far too poor for any enjoyable listening, S9/+5 into Maryland SDR. At 0219 I check it direct: JBA vs HSNL. At 0231 to Maryland has declined to JBA at 5129.979; and Maine SDR is JBA at 5129.978. Wonder if it`s back to previous power level. In summer anyway this should be on a higher band (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A [and non]. Obs direct during severe geomagnetic storm, April 24 at 0627+. 6160 WBCQ: inaudible. 6070 CFRX: JBA carrier. 6115 & 6055 Japan: inaudible. Attenuated but stronger signals remaining exhibit Doppler flutter, with BFO, not up and down but sideways: 5935 WWCR, 5850 WRMI, 4840 WWCR. At 0632, also 7505 WRNO, 7570 & 7780 WRMI. Flutter also hits southerly sigs such as CUBA, VANUATU, q.v. Checking bands at 1530 April 24: most signals still very attenuated or absent. The only one more or less normally strong is 12160 WWCR. ``:Product: Geophysical Alert Message wwv.txt Issued: 2023 Apr 24 1500 UTC Prepared by the US Dept. of Commerce, NOAA, Space Weather Prediction Center Geophysical Alert Message: Solar-terrestrial indices for 23 April follow. Solar flux 135 and estimated planetary A-index 66. The estimated planetary K-index at 1500 UTC on 24 April was 3.67. Space weather for the past 24 hours has been severe. Geomagnetic storms reaching the G4 level occurred. Space weather for the next 24 hours is predicted to be minor. Geomagnetic storms reaching the G1 level are expected.`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** VANUATU. 7260, April 24 at 0632, RV is S4/S6 with talk, about normal poor level, but with Doppler flutter caused by severe geomag storm. This path is totally trans-equatorial entering the US thru Yuma AZ; same direxion as Queensland (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) This report dispatched at 2349 UT April 24

Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** KIRITIMATI. 846 kHz, regular chex between 06 & 07 UT have not detected even a JBA carrier lately from R. Kiribati. Last time was April 10. Of course, summery storm noise levels are increasing, but would like to reconfirm if really still on air, e.g. via Oahu remote. Walt Salmaniw, BC, has been complaining of degraded trans-Pacific MW conditions (Glenn Hauser, OK, April 23, WOR) ** KURDISTAN [non]. 17470.008, April 23 at 1754, checking for Dengê Welat and Turkish jammer: only signal now in area below 17500 is here, VG S9+35 into UTwente, soft song by YL; 1758 change to OM & chorus with martial music. 1800 YL speaking. Now a trace of something under, but which is which? Splatters out to plus/minus 20 kHz. At 1810, the strong 17470 signal jumps to 17480 as the YL is still speaking, so now it`s splattering on 17470.010 where the other one has been uncovered, about the same offset but only S9+20 with chanting, music. ``To Glenn: Administration of Pridnestrovsky Radiotelecentr informed me on April 13 that Dengê Welat did not use its facilities in short waves because they were out of service due to the attacks suffered. On the frequencies 17450, 17460, 17470, 17475 and 17480 khz alternately record musical programming of Kurdish origin. Broadcasts between 21 and 2130 UT. Frequently, frequency changes are made during broadcasts. Using the Shazam app I was able to find out the name of one of the recordings: "Jin Jiyan Azadi" by Jinma. The translation corresponds in Kurdish to "Woman, Life and Freedom" used by the Kurdish autonomy movement. Information sites such as "Short Wave info", "Short Wave schedules" do not record these transmissions. Any information you publish about it will be valued. 73s Carlos Kostzer, Tucumán, Argentina`` Kai Ludwig replies on the WOR iog to my previous comment: >>> Some conclude that the current site is Uzbekistan, but not sure how firm that be. Glenn <<< ``When they abandoned Kostinbrod again a new transmission appeared for which Ivo Ivanov stated, as always just in three letters, that it came from Tashkent. As a matter of fact it was, at this point!, always noticeably off-frequency and the change from day to night frequency took rather long, so apparently some old equipment, and always the same transmitter. That characteristic frequency offset appears to be gone now. Thus I would say that the matter needs to be assessed again. Grigoriopol could be called the primary transmission facility for Denge Welat and all its previous incarnations (apparently it was always the same radio station from studios at Denderleeuw near Brussels, just with alternating licences and thus names), but it was by no means the only one. Other site usages over the years I'm aware of were Issoudun, Bijeljina, Kostinbrod, Gavar and Samara. Only Bijeljina and Samara can be ruled out now, simply because both stations no longer exist. And it was rather the norm than the exception that more than one station was involved in day-to-day operations, like the previous Grigoriopol-Issoudun combination. References to a certain database are in my opinion of limited use, it meanwhile contains too much outdated data. I fear we're at serious risk of getting lost in a self-reference loop niow. Kai`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** NORTH AMERICA. 7400, April 23 at 0644, S5/S7 music, presumed R. Eastern Star, Russian ethnic pirate. Reports lately he has been talking about communism, socialism, capitalism, but not clear what`s his POV, political agenda (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2187 monitoring: confirmed UT Sunday April 23 at 0030 on WRMI 7780, S7/S9 into Maryland SDR way offbeam, with storm crashes. Also confirmed UT Sunday April 23 at 0312 on WA0RCR, 1860 AM, MO, S9+18 by groundwave to nearby SDR, about 10 minutes into so started early circa 0302. Next: 2000 UT Sunday IRRS 1323 & 918? & 207?-Italy 0030 UT Monday WRMI 7780 to SW 0300vUT Monday WBCQ Area 51 6160v to WSW 0030 UT Tuesday WRMI 9395 to NNW 2330 UT Tuesday WRMI 9395 to NNW 1000 UT Wednesday Unique R, Australia 5035 USB [low power] 2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW 0030 UT Thursday WRMI 9395 to NNW 0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S Full schedule including AM, FM, webcasts, satellite, podcasts: http://www.worldofradio.com/radioskd.html Like our website, a noncommercial service for which financial support is appreciated; thanks this week to Dan Sheedy, Encinitas CA, for a generous contribution to Glenn Hauser, P O Box 1684, Enid OK 73702; ``Just wanted to wish you a happy birthday and throw a donation into the `WOR vat of consistently useful and accurate DX info`. Thanks for all your efforts to keep DX info non-trivial. Cheers, Dan`` One may also contribute via PayPal, not necessarily in US funds, to woradio at yahoo.com (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 9330, April 23 at 0655, no signal from WLCR on WBCQ. Something wrong again? Maybe just a break for beam change, as I think they have to cut carrier while rotating. Did not get back to recheck after 0700, zzzz. It is on air April 23 at 1556 in English, only S9 into Missouri SDR, pretends to sign off but stays on air straight thru resuming programming at 1600, no change in strength either. What do skeds show? HFCC A23: at 1600 change English from 250 kW at 300 degrees, to 500 at 57. 05-09 continuous in English, 250 kW at 270 degrees. Not matching: Own websked: 03-07 English at 250 degrees, 0700 change to Spanish at 57 degrees; 14-22 continuous in English, 256 degrees (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 7505, Sunday April 23 at 0646, WRNO ``Fort Worth`` still on extended sked with praise music, S9+20 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** VANUATU. Ron Howard says the report from him about RV I quoted in last report was axually from April 20, not same date April 22 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) This report dispatched at 1956 UT April 23

** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98 RC USB, Sat Apr 22 at 2303, LRA36 poorly audible talk, S4/S5 into Argentine SDR. Inaudible by 2348 recheck. First reported today by: ``Manuel Méndez, Lugo, Spain, Log in Friol, NW of Spain: ANTARCTICA, 15476usb, LRA 36, checked at 2046, 22-04, on air, comments about Antarctica, identification, email, Whatsapp telephone number, the weather in Base Esperanza. 35433``. I did not check Wednesday April 19 and saw no other reports of it; was it on then? When will the new all-woman crewe take over? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** EUROPE. 6330 CW, April 22 at 2310-2407+, Radio Pirana International publicized it would ``beacon``. Inaudible direct, but good and steady S7 into UTwente SDR; best on LSB to avoid STANAG? noise. Sends RPI several times, and spells out RADIO PIRANA -- with a plain N rather than Ñ or NH. Wonder where this pirate transmit from, and purpose of this; real broadcasts impending? At 1920 UT on the WOR iog: ``[WOR] RPI Beacon on 6330 kHz --- Dear friends; We are now again on air on: 6330 kHz in CW with our Beacon transmitter with about 8 watts into a half wave dipole from northern Europe. We could hear a weak signal on an SDR in Australia just 20 minutes ago (18:45 UTC). The beacon transmitter will be on to at least 08.00 UTC tomorrow (23rd of April). And on again from 18.30 UTC tomorrow Sunday until Monday 08.00 UTC. Sincerely Jorge R. ** AUSTRALIA. 28262 CW, April 21 at 2304, beacon with long dash and VK2RSY -- a Q code follows and a few more symbols, ending in AH. JBA and needed repeated passes to copy this much. Not much else on 10m. It happens that VK2RSY was recommended by VK4RST in his reply to me earlier in April as one of the few other active VK beacons. But no VK4RST audible on 28266 now. Listed thus at WI5V: ``28.2616 VK2RSY C SYDNEY, NSW, AUSTRALIA # 25W, 1/2 VERTICAL`` QRZ.com shows nothing except: ``VK2RSY Australia flag Australia, WIRELESS INSTITUTE OF AUSTRALIA NSW DIV, PO BOX 1066, PARRAMATTA, NSW 2124, Australia`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** COLOMBIA. 10125 CW, April 21 at 0620, HK3QQ making another regular appearance with keyboard letters in order. Listening closely again, I notice that R and M are are skipped; maybe as before but I expected to hear them? ``QWETYUIOX ASDFGHJKLÑ ZXCVBN``. Something else follows after ID, BOGOTA COLOMBIA --- not yet copied but ends in 73 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** TURKEY. 11785, April 21 after 2200 I can barely tell that VOT is not off the air today, direct; better later with more antenna but still too much fading and selective distortion, S9/S7. Recheck at 2259, still on with IS and German ID, 2300 timesignal about 8 sex later than WWV, and into German. Rerecheck at 2310 it`s off. Something`s always erroneous at Emirler, awry at Ankara (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2187 monitoring: confirmed first SWBC, Friday April 21 at 1430-1459 on WRMI 9955, S8 fading to S4 direct, no jamming audible. Needs to be on higher band in daytime. This transmission is the only WRMI one also webcast, and phonecast. Wonder if I have any regular listeners via telephone? ``Listen to our 9955 kHz live stream via the telephone. Call +1-641-741-1762 anytime, 24/7.`` Also confirmed Friday April 21 at 2056 the 2030 on IRRS SW via AM Italia, 1323 kHz, S9/+15 but noisy and medium SAH from understation presumed Brighton. (7490-), April 22 at 0000, WBCQ webcast of `AAAWWW`. For once, Angela doesn`t ask whether her mike is on, and by golly, it`s not. Only occasional comments from her are being picked up in the background from Allan`s mike. Plugs their AM 780 and FM 94.7 stations and their wonderful talk, country and rock programming. Mainly talking about transmitters, including 5130 being down. Says they have six transmitters and unspecified number of backups; (so why are only three on air now, including the SuperStition?). 5130 is a 1955 Collins FRT-22 which runs 8 ancient tubes, not being made any more; there are rebuilders but also a shorage of usable duds which can be rebuilt. Chides Timtron as a ``lazy lout`` who hasn`t gone to Monticello to fix 5130 which he could probably do in a semihour (he lives in central Maine). And a couple more times during the hour. Only he and Allan (still in Florida) know how to work on ancient transmitters. Trying to hire two more engineers who know their stuff. For the SS also lost a $ 245K Thalès tube which failed last month after running only 4 months! Fortunately under warranty but delays in replacing. And it`s the *second* one to fail like that. Made in France, must not be well constructed. 0048 prompts Angela to utter datestamp and contact info - still off-mike. Discussing saving AM car radios, contrary to Ford`s plans. Claims explicitly that Democrats = communists = moonbats, who are against AM radio because it`s mostly conservative talk. 0056 some quick emails (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 7505, April 21 at 0616, WRNO is still on with gospel huxter in English, S9+10/20. It used to run overnight, partly in Hindi, Chinese; maybe resuming that? Lately only 0100-0400, the last hour in Hindi per EiBi. Always HFCC registered available all the way from 22 to 16 UT; and nothing else except USAGM Kuwait in Bod dialect of Tibetan at 22-23 only, sparking jamming. Own website is useless, only highlighting three preachers earlier in evening. Even more useless on disgraced FB where the latest entry is a triyear old from April, 2020! (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) UNIDENTIFIED. 10105 USB, April 21 at 0625, 2-way in Spanish. In 30m hamband, so are these hams in non-phone band, or intruders? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** COLOMBIA. 10125 CW, April 20 at 0635, once again the strange station sending keyboard letters slowly in sequence: ``QWERTYUIOX ASDFGHJKLÑ ZXCVBNM`` and then much faster: ``VVV DE HK3QQ BOGOTA COLOMBIA`` --- note the error? of X instead of P, like reversed dits and dahs? And the Enye after L; maybe that`s where it lies on a Spanish keyboard. QRZ.com:
``HK3QQ Colombia flag Colombia, Jesús Ernesto Reyes Castro, Bogotà 111156, Colombia Escuela de telegrafia Marconi ilustrado - Colombia Frecuencia: 7.070 CW Beacom VVV De HK3QQ Bogotá Colombia 5W`` Previous logs of this filed under UNIDENTIFIED (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2187) ** CUBA. 6100, April 20 at 0655, RHC English still on here with some rumble, and this time nowhere else on 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 13 or 15 MHz bands. Had not heard 6100 for weeks. Nominal sked was 05-07 English, extended to 0730 for Esperanto, Sundays. Something`s not wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 221887) ** NORTH AMERICA. 7400, April 20 at 0642, JBA music, then ``Mayak`` interval signal, and unreadable talk mixed with music: from R. Vostochnaya Zvezda: first reported moved from 7320 to 7400 at 0419 UT April 19 by Lucas Bandura, BC: ``[WOR] Radio Channel Eastern Star now on 7400 AM -- He moved yesterday at 0423 UTC April 18. I was talking to him in the HF Underground Discord chat and he moved to get away from the Radio Martí QRM. Today he is having issues with his audio that is causing distortion. I have also heard the English ID as “Radio Channel Eastern Star” now.`` Per EiBi, 7400 is a good clear spot - except Brazilian Pará pirate R. What about Radio Angela? 5130, still no WBCQ R Angela signal from 0200 UT April 20. Yet, 6160 & 7490 are both carrying military medley, SSB amid extended Hal Turner show. R Angela must be of lowest priority - so the usual 5130 xmtr is broken: why not let it be on one of the others temporarily? Other nights would deprive dead Brother Hystairical of one frequency among many. And what about all the extra transmitters supposedly at Monticello? Jeff White gave them one from WRMI. 3265 could be turned on at same time as all the others, so why not use it now, preferably on 5130 or higher instead? ``Bad tubes``, hard to find. R Angela & listeners may be in for a long wait unless some alternative is used (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2187) ``Uncle Bill responds: At the moment I anticipate Radio Angela not returning to the airwaves before May. There are actually two components to the problem, parts and labor. The late Tom Barna was the engineer in residence on the spot who might have been able to jury rig something together, and he is missed more than ever right now. Timtron and (at the moment) Allan are both some distance away. The 5130 transmitter does legitimately need new tubes which are both hard to find and expensive, hence our increasingly-frequent appeals for financial support. But even with enough benefactors to buy "new" tubes, the station does also need to hire another engineer as well and has been actively recruiting. 7490 is full enough that throwing us there isn't practical and the other frequencies aren't ideal options just now either for other reasons. It would be nice on general principles if listeners who miss us wrote the station to remind it that we are missed when we are gone. --Uncle Bill [Tilford], Curator, Radio Angela, WBCQ The Planet`` (April 21, WOR iog via Glenn Hauser; not in time for WOR 2187) ** U S A. 9975, UT Fri Oct 21 at 0110, still no signal from KVOH, which had started to run on Thursday nights too (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) This report dispatched at 0201 UT April 21
