WRMI RELAYS EUROPIRATE THE VAULT ON SUNDAY AT 0100 UTC ON 5950 KHZ

All The Vault says about itself is that it’s located somewhere in
Europe. That’s good enough for us, and we’re happy to bring listeners an
hour of music from the station.

In tanti si erano mossi per bloccarne la demolizione, prevista nei
giorni scorsi e rinviata ad aprile. Dal sindaco di Caltanissetta Roberto
Gambino ai consiglieri comunali, da Legambiente Caltanissetta al Wwf
Sicilia. E oggi si apprende che la Soprintendenza ai beni culturali ha
avviato le pratiche per assegnare all’Antenna Rai che svetta sulla
collina Sant’Anna lo status di bene di interesse culturale da sottoporre
a vincolo. In soldoni, l’antenna dovrebbe restare al suo posto.

L’assessore esulta
A darne notizia è l’assessore regionale Alberto Samonà. “L’avvio della
procedura di interesse culturale da parte della Soprintendenza – spiega
Samonà – esprime in maniera concreta la volontà del governo regionale di
accogliere il sentimento di forte identificazione coralmente espresso
dalla comunità nissena. Adesso è necessario che tutti facciano la
propria parte, non soltanto per salvaguardare il bene culturale, ma
anche per valorizzare l’area con una concreta progettualità. Ringrazio
la soprintendente Daniela Vullo per la celerità dimostrata e per lo
spirito di collaborazione con l’assessorato, nel trovare la migliore
soluzione”.

Un progetto innovativo
Fu la prima ad essere costruita in Italia. Dopo toccò a quelle di Monte
Mario a Roma, di Nesima a Catania e di Monte Pellegrino a Palermo. Il
progetto si deve agli ingegneri Sergio Bertolotti e Gino Castelnuovo.
Era innovativo ed efficiente a giudicare dal fatto che l’antenna è
ancora in piedi nonostante le intemperie. Ha resistito a fenomeni
eccezionali come terremoti e trombe d’aria. Sembra una lunghissima
matita a testa in giù, sormontata da una corona circolare che misura sei
metri di diametro. Tiranti e contrappesi ne hanno garantito stabilità e
capacità di resistere alle oscillazioni.

Un tempo superata solo dal simbolo di Parigi
Fino al 1965 grazie ai suoi 286 metri di altezza vantava due primati.
Era l’antenna più alta d’Europa e al contempo la seconda struttura
d’acciaio intelaiato dopo la più famose Tour Eiffel di Parigi (altra 300
metri). Anche la torre parigina, però, si è vista superare dalla Belmont
Trasmitting Station in Inghilterra (351 metri) e della Torre della
Televisione di Vinnycja in Ucraina, (354 metri).

I numeri contano fino a un certo punto, qui entrano in gioco altri
fattori. “Il trasmettitore viene percepito nel sentire comune come il
luogo simbolo di una trasformazione epocale – spiega Samonà –
l’espressione di un’archeologia industriale che ha fortemente connotato
il territorio, cambiando la fisionomia dei luoghi e integrandosi a tal
punto nel contesto ambientale da divenire esso stesso parte della storia
della città”.

C’è chi parla di mettere l’antenna al centro di un più ampio progetto,
un museo forse. Ed ecco il cuore della questione. Quando sarà
definitivamente vincolato dalla Soprintendenza bisognerà evitare, come
spesso accade in Sicilia, che l’antenna resti un simbolo a futura
memoria di qualcosa che poteva essere e non è stato, in balia degli
eventi atmosferici e con possibili rischi per la pubblica incolumità.
