Glenn Hauser logs July 11-12, 2023  View Printable Version
Thursday, July 13 2023

Logs
** CUBA. 11850, July 12 at 0332, RHC is S7/9+20 but suptorted Spanish;
15230 is S7/S9 but undermodulated; 9535 audible, weaker; but one
frequency, 11670 has VG modulation and strength. Something`s always
wrong at RHC.

6000 is the only English frequency, July 12 at 0351, S9+30/45 but
undermodulated with hum. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA [non]. 5024.9, July 12 at 0353, JBA carrier with R. Rebelde
missing. Something`s wrong at RadioCuba. R. Quillabamba, Perú, has
been reported elsewhere and elsewhen on such an offset, but this may
be a local birdie since it varies down to 5024.7 (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** EGYPT. 9884.961, July 11 at 2332, as scheduled, R. Cairo has moved
from 9899.961 by 2330 for Arabic to follow Portuguese toward South
America --- and at exactly the same -19 Hz offset, as UTWente displays
both, but modulation now is even worse, only bits at peak spikes.
There is also heavy lightning over Netherlands and this S9+30/40
bigsig is not enough to suppress it completely. Also an RTTY-like
warble. Something continues egregious in Egypt (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** MEXICO [and non]. 1670, July 12 at 0401, ``Focus está contigo``,
into EZL or love song; Sportstalk in English soon takes over, no doubt
WOZN Wisconsin. First time I`ve managed to catch XEFCR, Focus Radio,
10 kW in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, a relatively new station. With a name
like that and on the border, I was wondering if it`s ever in English.
Steve Ponder had reported it June 23 so I asked him.

``Glenn, The ID’s and announcements that I have heard over several
nights of monitoring XEFCR Focus Radio (1670 kHz) have been in
Spanish. I haven’t heard any English, which is unusual to me, since
Reynosa is not that far from McAllen and Pharr. I will continue
monitoring the frequency … Steve Ponder, N5WBI, Houston, TX`` (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. Heavy tropo on maps around Enid, so a DTV bandscan July
12 at 1544 UT: BAD signals on RF: 10, 11, 14, 17, 22, 31, 34, 36.
Still at 1620, 17 is mostly bad, occasionally 3ABN, K17JN-D, so Enid`s
only local TV signal is again being overcome by DX. Decoding well are
20 KQCW-HD, 19-1 CW for Tulsa from Muskogee - and this one has NO
extra channels, what a waste. Rabbitears shows suffix as KQCW-DT; and
RF 34, 28-1 ION, KTPX-TV Okmulgee and its panoply of seven extras. At
1650 occasional decodes on RF 34 of 41-1 KMYT-TV Tulsa (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** SINGAPORE. 12025, July 12 at 1627, BBC English relay for ME, S5/S8
direct and insufficient to copy -- on ITS FINAL DAY. Walt Salmaniw, BC
reported at 1503:

``[WOR] BBC Singapore off from tomorrow 13 July 2023 --- Listening to
12025 just before 15:00 with the BBC bells, and then an announcement
that the BBC site at Singapore is going off the air tomorrow and will
no longer be available. They gave an internet option only. Very good
into Masset, although there is a weak sounding grinding sound --
either from the transmitter (I think), or another transmitter. Walt``

Kai Ludwig, Germany replies: ``The exact wording: "We start to tell
you that from tomorrow we're closing our Singapore transmitter." So
much for the replacements effective 16 July, as still shown in the
public HFCC data.

So it could be that the very last Kranji transmission has already
started, even that the St Mary-le-Bow bells have already for the very
last time introduced a BBC transmission, or are they still inserted
anywhere else?

Anyway: The very first piece of hard evidence at all. And perhaps the
only statement from the BBC on this matter at all. Kai Ludwig``

And Kai provides this historic recording July 12, 2023, at 1459 UT:
https://www.w4uvh.net/BBC_Singapore_closure_announcement.mp3
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 17855, Wed July 12 at 2200, token English from SNR, news and
2206 feature is ``a guided tour of the Royal Opera House in Madrid``,
a.k.a. in Spanish just `Teatro Real`. Interview with some official
about history of the building, etc., during a celebratory week. VG
S9/+15 into Maryland SDR and the other three frequencies also audible
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SUDAN SOUTH [non]. 11650, July 12 at 0330, Arabish language,
S7/S9+5 and HornofAfricish music -- yes, it`s R. Tamazuj via
MADAGASCAR just starting, to be followed by another hour of R. Dabanga
until 0530 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 11785.009, July 12 at 2200, VOT English is not off the air,
S9+35/45 into UTwente, but first I`m listening to simulSpain.
2225-2231 `Feeling Supreme/The Healing Spring` tips for breast-feeding
mothers how to avoid gassy babies. Mostly music then, except 2237
`Always By Your Side` plug; 2250 usual canned s/off; 2251.4 IS,
2253.5* off (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [non]. 7260, July 12 at 0348, VG S9+20/30, VOA Somali via
VATICAN, violating Separation Of Church And State, sked 0330-0400
only; before, during, and after that, Mongolia and East Turkistan
could also be on 7260, but by 0600 it`s only Vanuatu to be heard
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2198 monitoring: ``From: Richard
Lemke, St. Albert, Alberta, Canada, the desk of Richard’s listening

WBCQ 7490 -70 Hz = 7489.930, S7/S9 into Maryland SDR. Next:

Next WOR 2199 should be ready for download early UT Friday July 14.

Thanks this week to John, N9JL: ``Hello Glenn, I routinely listen to
your weekly podcasts, and really enjoy them. You consistently provide
your listeners with a broad cross-section of SW and BC band related
information. In only 30 minutes I know the stations I should be tuning
for over the following several days. Please accept this small
contribution in support of your on-going efforts. 73, John, N9JL,
Lutz, EN51vm, Shorewood IL`` -- with a check to Glenn Hauser, P O Box
1684, Enid OK 73702

woradio at yahoo.com (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 7489.930, Wed July 12 at 2130, WBCQ S7/S9 into Maryland SDR,
new program following WORLD OF RADIO -- who could ask for a better
lead-in? `Plain Old Doug Show`, brief intro, then straight novelty
Dixieland tunes, 2153 brief outro with email, 2154 into `Line Break` -
these are two survivors of `Radio Angela`, which previewed them this
way before it was decided to stop:

10:30pm-10:55pm EDT (Fridays 0230-0255 UTC):
Plain Old Doug Show
Host: Doug Feldmann (US)
Format: Doug is a long-time loyal WBCQ listener who began to try his
hand at making shows for us. Often featuring early string band music
but sometimes heads off into completely different directions.
Email: custodiandoug@aol.com

10:55pm-11:00 pm EDT (Fridays 0255-0300 UTC)
Line Break
Host: T.D. Walker (US)
Format: Poetry. T.D. Walker is the author of poetry collections and
science fiction stories as well as a shortwave radio enthusiast.
Includes selections from several other poets.
Email: qsl@linebreakshortwave.com
Website: https://www.linebreakshortwave.com/

2130 Wed is still shown as an *available timeslot on the never
up-to-date BCQ websked. BTW, on Sunday July 9 at 2200 another ATS was
occupied by another repeat of `AAAWWW`, but Bill Tilford says he plans
to resume that hour with his two main shows, FTIOM and UBMP each once
a month:

``Beginning August 6, Julio Cesar Pereira and I will be purchasing a
shared weekly hour Sundays 6-7 pm [EDT = 22-23 UT] on 7490 (right
after Marion's Attic) - I will be taking week 1 with From the Isle of
Music and week 3 with Uncle Bill's Melting Pot, Julio weeks 2 and 4
with Ginga Brasil! Unlike 5130, 7490 does livestream (but does not
archive) on the wbcq.com website. Marion's Attic and Behavior Night
have already been on the frequency for many years as was FTIOM and
UBMP for a few. At this writing, while the shortwave press has
lamented Radio Angela's passing, there has not been a sufficient
listener groundswell to be able to have any significant leverage with
possible sponsors. Personally, I am moving on, but with good feelings
about what we did while we did it.`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 7505, July 12 at 0347, WRNO in presumed Hindi but having to
resort to English to slowly convey their Fort Worth postal address,
S9/+30. Still not running overnight, off circa 0645 recheck (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 91.5, July 12 at 2213 UT, another futile check for Es FM DX
at least accomplishes this: KSNS, Medicine Lodge KS, is now into its
sixth day of dead air as first noted July 7 but probably started
earlier (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Logs
** CUBA. 15230, July 11 at 2219, RHC is JBA, can`t tell language;

Somethings` always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** EGYPT. 9899.961, July 11 at 2248, extremely distorted talk at
S9+25/40 into UTwente; intonation and occasional words sound
Portuguese as scheduled from R. Cairo at 2215-2330. Something`s always
egregious in Egypt. EiBi shows both CNR1 and RTI also on 9900 at
2200-2400 but not a trace of either vs this monstrosity. Cairo
scheduled to follow with Arabic on 9885 at 2330-0045, Spanish on 9860
at 0045-0200, all for S America. Why do they bother? (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6869.91 AM, July 11 at 0640, for a change this late,
not even a JBA carrier from unID pirate. But it had been on 6869.937

** TURKEY. 11785, July 11 at 2159 into UTwente, I may have seen a

** U S A. 7730, July 11 at 0638, WRMI-2 is reactivated, back to usual
poor signal, S8/9 in HSNL with children singing, // slightly weaker
WRMI-9, 15770 S6/S9. I last logged 7730 on June 3 and first noted it
missing June 12. Since then, no trace of it in nightly bandscans.
Much, but not all of the time, 7730 is // 15770, as at 0630 daily,
Slovakia in Spanish.

Next check July 11 at 1610: 7730 S6/S8 into Boca Ratón FL SDR in
German and classical music, sked as SMTV. 15770 in Spanish music, then
also German talk, RAE relay scheduled (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. Larry Will explains the dead air from 6160-, WBCQ Area 51
during WOR time July 10 at 0300: ``Hi Glenn, A thunderstorm on Sunday
afternoon snapped a large pine tree about two blocks north of our
house and crushed the power and cable lines during a thunderstorm on
Sunday afternoon. Power and internet resumed at 7:30 pm local time and
I was able to get Area 51 back online a few minutes later. All seemed
fine until about 10:00 pm [02 UT], when the cable cut suddenly,
dropping us off the internet. I discovered technicians repairing a
cable connection on the same pole at that time. Our broadband wasn't
restored until sometime after midnight and we've been online since
then. Sorry about the Area 51 dead air; if I would have known about
the latter outage I would have made plans to source the programming
from a backup site. Cheers, Lw`` Tnx, Larry, sorry you had to go thru
that and tnx for trying (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. Replies to some of my FM DX logs July 9:

[Re 91.5 WXXO Rochester NY:] ``Hi Glenn, WXXI on ch 21 preceded other
FM and AM outlets. So yes it refers the original analogue channel.
WXXI-FM calls recently moved to the new operation on 105.9, and 91.5
is now WXXO, which Scott Fybush tells me is of little consequence
because it generally IDs as "Classic FM." 105.9 used to be WJZR with
R&B and light jazz, but the owner retired and WXXI was able to buy it.
WXXI has double the power on 105.9 now. WXXI-AM on 1370 had been the
news operation, but it's coverage sucked at night, probably because
its pattern is N/S and in the years that followed the original license
and antenna pattern Rochester expanded east and west, but the original
pattern protects WFEA and WSPD, so where I live 25 miles west of
Rochester it was poor at night. The new FM solves that coverage issue
now for news junkies like me who gag on anything further to the right
(like WHAM). When I heard that WJZR was closing I fully expected
another K-LOVE or EWTN to grab it, but very thankfully I was wrong. I
suspect that WXXI-1370 will be shed in the not too distant future. It
would be cool if that channel could be turned into a programming
source for minority-oriented NPR programs, but will probably go
religious. I hope not.

I often catch CBL-FM 94.1 with classical, though it also has public
affairs, sometimes eclectic music at night. So the Variety format
actually fits.

[Re 93.3 WWSE Jamestown NY:] Yes on 93.3 Jamestown carrying Erie
ads.

[Re 96.5 WCMF Rochester NY `at 1817, ad for Gallisaunam?? something
like, Institute`:] That mystery word is (Tom) Golisano, founder of
Paychex, a payroll company, whose philanthropy seems mostly designed
to put his name on things, like hospitals, stadiums and colleges. He
tried to be Governor and has owned sports teams. Though he made his
fortune in New York, of course "no thanks to NY", and I think he's
moved to Florida to avoid taxes. Reminds me of someone else, though
Golisano is less odious. So there you go! Jim Renfrew, Clarendon NY``
Tnx for the interesting background, Jim! (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. RF 14, 17, 22, 31, 36, July 11 at 1540 UT, BAD DTV
signals during lots of tropo around Enid, mapping especially into
Kansas, but no decodes (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

classical without being so mentioned on WTFDA DB:
CBL-FM 94.1 TORONTO ON CAN VARIETY CBC MUSIC 38.0 420.0 43-38-33
79-23-14 B203 CBC CBC MUSIC No Program Type or Undefined 1764/1096

** CHINA [and non]. 21800, July 10 at 0627-0629 UT, searching 13m band
for any signals in our summermiddle nightmiddle, this JBA carrier is
the highest, CNR1 jammer listed in EiBi; vs Sound of Hope which would
be on 21799.7. Also: JBA carrier on 21560, BBC MADAGASCAR; q.v. for
16m (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 11670, Monday July 10 at 0633, tonight`s extra prolongation
but Spanish not English, opening repeat of `En Contacto` DX program,
first topic: yagi antennas; later, propagation; S9/+10 direct with
squeal. Something`s always wrong at RHC. WWDXC DX program list shows
0635 on 3 other irr. frequencies including 5040 which seems totally
gone (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 15230, July 10 at 2158, S9/+10 of dead air direct from RHC
but did not get back after 2200 to check whether Portuguizing for a
change today. By 2310 into Missouri SDR it is modulating Spanish but
sup/torted. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KURDISTAN [non]. 17460.016, July 10 at 1613, music, presumably
Turkish jammer at typical Emirler offset, S9+10/15 with squeal into
UTwente; while 17480.001, S8/9+15 in talk about Kurdistan, presumably
Dengê Welat, via Uzbekistan? broadly missed by the jammer. By 1658 two
signals making SAH on 17460, no signal on 17480. Earlier in
nightmiddle had JBA signals at 0623 on 17460, 17485 (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** MADAGASCAR [and non]. Nightmiddle, summermiddle scan of 16m band,
17460-17890, July 10 at 0623-0627 finds 23 carriers from JBA to VG
17640 BBC, 17790 AWR both via Talata. See also KURDISTAN [non] and for
13m, CHINA [and non] (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SINGAPORE. 12025, July 10 at 1511, BBCWS news in English, S9/S8,
EiBi-listed as Kranji site at 15-19 aiming for Mideast. Site allegedly
to be closed as of July 16 or 23, but already phasing out (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 17855, Monday July 10 at 2200, VG direct, token English from
SNR, previews after news: more on the Pamplona festival; about Royal
Shakespeare Co. produxion of `As You Like It`; report from Lebanon
about Cervantes Institute activities in Beirut. I heard the first part
2206-2218: getting gored by bulls is only part of the San Fermín
Festival with many other activities. Animal-rights groups have been
unable to stop the bull-run, a major touri$ t attraxion (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 11785, July 10 at 2200, 2219, 2231 chex, zero signal from
VOT English. Something`s always erroneous at Emirler (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** U S A. 28300 CW, July 10 at 2152, K6FRC/B over and over, beacon.
WI5V roster dispenses with the /B, to be assumed, u.o.s.:
28.300 K6FRC C TRACY, CALIFORNIA # 100W, "POGO stick" VERTICAL Freq
change 8 July 09.
28.300 K6FRC/B2 TRACY, CALIFORNIA 10W, VERTICAL Backup transmitter for
K6FRC/B
Now it`s the OSOB, no other beacons to be heard, nor any phone up to
28500. And it`s been quite a while since I`ve detected K6FRC on 13565
which is at a different location, Patterson, allegedly 1.8
milliwatts.

26110 FM, KMK282 at KOVR `13` Stockton/Sacramento, I check for
whenever also on 10m band and have heard no sign of it since March 28.
Frodge-MI had it April 6. Is it ever on any more? --- also no local CB
pirate on 27185 relaying Enid FM stations (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2198 monitoring: confirmed Sunday
July 9 at 2018 the 2000 on IRRS SW via AM Italia 1323 only, S9+10/20
with only lite understation CCI.

Also confirmed UT Monday July 10 at 0030 on WRMI 7780, S8/9+10 into
Louisiana SDR - and for first time in long time, NO external noise
blast for first 14 seconds: we can only hope it`s over.

NOT confirmed UT Monday July 10 circa 0300 on Area 51 via WBCQ 6160
minus 67 Hz = 6159.933, S7/S9+5 into Maryland SDR, but DEAD AIR.
Webcast? 404 but 7490 air and web are running OK. Does not matter that
there is some ACI from 6165 VOT. Tuned in at 0258 when already dead.
Hope Larry Will is OK. I let both run thru entire unoccupied WOR block
to 0330 and whatever would follow until 0400, when 6160 comes to life
with ID and right into TOMBS. Next:

Thanks this week to John, N9JL: ``Hello Glenn, I routinely listen to
your weekly podcasts, and really enjoy them. You consistently provide
your listeners with a broad cross-section of SW and BC band related
information. In only 30 minutes I know the stations I should be tuning
for over the following several days. Please accept this small
contribution in support of your on-going efforts. 73, John, N9JL,
Lutz, EN51vm, Shorewood IL`` -- with a check to Glenn Hauser, P O Box

One may also contribute via PayPal, not necessarily in US funds to:
woradio at yahoo.com (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 15150, July 10 at 0619, WMLK booming at S9+30, presumed
DEJOM, denouncing other Yahweh sects who`ve got it all wrong. Ho, hum.
Was originally blasting in like this when I first discovered, but
lately had been quite weak, all depending on propagation, or
operation? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WTWW: George McClintock updates us on July 9: hopes to be
back on air this week or next, first 5085, later 9475, as he has been
sales-approaching various ministries. Also is selling some expensive
extra parts to help finance the station for rest of year, such as
twelve only partially ~half-depleted final tubes since Ted mishandled
them. You`re supposed to gradually increase the voltage as time goes
on. KVOH may be buying two of them for Zambia. Could only get $ 200/ton
for scrap metal. BTW, the WTWW building has a fabulous floor (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. Es FM DX: gotta take it whenever it decide to
happen! In the not too hot garage, on the Nissan Sentra 2004 stock
caradio with fender vertical antenna only, so no antenna manipulation
but disfavoring horizontal-only stations, if any; all logs in real
time with my own ears, one frequency at a time, no RDS capability, no
recording, no internet for stream comparisons; but research later from
my scribbled notes, mainly the excellent WTFDA FM Database, also in
general searching if needed.

All times strictly UT! Numbers just before geo coordinates are kW ERP
and antenna height above average terrain in meters. Identical horiz
and vert figures, u.o.s. Last figures are distances in km/stmi
city-to-city so approx., not site-to-city, from distancefromto.net.
Showing distance does not necessarily make a log more definite, but
FYI.

I do not count stations, states or anything, what`s `new` or not, and
am not in a competition. Each DX log I view as a potential learning
experience. Clarifications, correxions welcome. Sunday July 9, all
times strictly UT!

91.5 at 1742, KSNS *still* dead air but some classical music is
off-and-on trying to overcome it. From subsequent probable target area
obs, likely:
WXXO 91.5 ROCHESTER NY HD CLASSICAL CLASSICAL 91.5 45.0 134.0 43-08-07
77-35-03 93C8 WXXI -FM Classical 91.5 WXXI-FM Rochester NY Classical
// WXXY 90.3 & W298CE 107.5 -- and again at 1805. Recently changed
call from WXXI to WXXO. The XXI derived from the now surely irrelevant
old analog channel of its TV station which must have preceded the FM;
altho one might guess it denote our century 1882/1169

94.5 at 1748, 1755, 1804, classical music in mix of others, surely:
WNED-FM 94.5 BUFFALO NY HD CLASSICAL WNED CLASSICAL 94.0 220.5

94.5 at 1750, ad for seabreeze.com on the shore of Lake Ontario,
mentions Rochester. No stations there, but apparently:

Then at 1751 ad for Kia in East Syracuse 1993/1239

94.5 at 1750, mention news network and KNN. Can`t be sure whether this
be one of the more definitely IDed on 94.5. KNN could mean Kentucky
News Network, rather than Kurdistan or Korea. If so there is one
possibility in KY:
WMXL 94.5 LEXINGTON KY HD HOT AC MIX 94.5 85.0 194.0 38-07-24 84-26-37
16B9 Artist/Song - Mix 94.5 Artist/Song - Mix 94.5 Adult Hits
but I have not been able to make any such correlation. There is such a
thing in KY, but no radio affiliate list found. A music station might
incidentally get newscasts from KNN, not worth website mention

97.3 at 1756, hymn VG and very briefly. No format fit in OH; in NY
only two very low power religious teachers. In PA there is one, east
of Pittsburgh; possibly but lowpowered:

93.3 at 1758, CCI to OKC, Yankee Honda ad, Hometown Rent-to-Own,
mentions Erie PA and 93 -- but no fits for Erie. I seem to get hits
for Yankee Honda in Erie, but real name of dealer there is Bianchi
which I may have misunderstood. Hometown Rent-to-Own rather generic a
name, but top hits are for Jamestown NY and Salamanca NY. I bet it`s
this: Jamestown NY is near Erie PA:

92.3 at 1808, ``check out 97-9 WJLB``. So which 92.3 could be a
sibling station to WJLB 97.9, which I did NOT hear, but FYI:

Still DX at 1839 but I have to suspend for lunch; resuming at 1901,
only sign of DX is some country atop 95.3 KOKC OKC translator; quit at
1914. Another false alarm checking at 2122-2129, just noting that 91.5
KSNS is *still* dead air.

2221 another session: 99.3 with NASCAR talk over KLOR Ponca; despite
next log, no sports format listed anywhere in VA or FL on 99.3.

94.5 at 2223, rap; 2236 ad for dancing at Main Street Station; in &

may be too generic, also one in Richmond VA. Both have local 94.5s. VA

Nothing more, quit at 2245. Keeping an eye on DXMAPs for Es MUFs and
favorable paths, there appear to be some further chances, such as UT
Monday July 10 when I`m back in the DX car at 0309-0315 but nothing
unusual - 91.5 KSNS still deadairing. Likewise July 10 at 2010 (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)
