WORLD OF RADIO HITLIST Update

Hi Glenn, my latest Hitlist update.
https://www.w4uvh.net/hitlist.htm

1) China - V of Tibet: Updated link to home page, added link to
programme schedule, deleted link to live stream (no longer found)
2) Cuba - R Havana Cuba: Although no change to link, I have labelled
the RHC podcasts as "sporadic", and added a link to archived editions
of The Jazz Place on YouTube.
3) Germany - Shortwave Radio: Updated link to frequency schedule to
point to revised A-23 schedule (Thanks to Lesley Illingworth in WOR
iog mail list)
4) UK - BBC WS: Added links to BBC WS News-Africa Facebook page, and
to "Focus on Africa" home page
5) USA - R Martí: Updated link to homepage, added link to current
(A-23) frequencies and added link to Facebook page
6) USA - WRMI: Updated link to WRMI Legends live stream

The next update is scheduled for early June.
Best wishes and 73, Alan Roe

** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98 RC USB, Sat Apr 29 at 1938 I tune in early for
a change to LRA36 frequency via Argentine remote; and hear a humroar
as if a carrier already on? Synchro mode cannot lock on to any
specific frequency, anywhere from 1 to 400 Hz on the plus side! But at
1940 the noise changes to rock music in Spanish sounding best on
15475.98 RC USB, S9/+10 - so that`s it! with a prélude. But it`s off
abruptly at 1945*. More to come?

*2005 cuts back on with song in progress. 2006 conversation between OM
and YL voices, some of them off-mike - as if they don`t know yet they
are really on air worldwide. 2007 fast Morse code including ID maybe
LU1ZV, 2008 s/on in spoken Spanish; and canned greetings multi-lingual
including English; 2009 YL reads scripted piece about Antarctica with
too-loud SFX, crashing waves? 2013 OM starts `Uniendo Voces`, joint
produxion with RAE and that university, Quilmes; with credits not
including the new 5-YL crewe, and yes, Nicole is a Srta. Accompanied
by one YL voice. No date mentioned so could be a rerun. Talking about
helicopter contacts with other bases such as Marambio. 2020 she gives
wx condx: -7 C, wind chill -14, winds 17 kph. 2022 refers to geomag
storm last few days so seems new. A lot of talk about Patagonia. 2025
multi-lingual RAE-only canned IDs. `Ecos de la Antártida` may be new
show title. 2028 acknowledging mail from listeners; contact info
including whatsapp, email, streaming. 2033 talking over a song, always
annoying, then rock song alone. 2038 multi-lingual RAE IDs again, then
as LRA36; etc., etc. (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ASCENSION. 21630, April 29 at 1545, surprised to hear JBA signal
here, as BBCWS in English does not start until 1600. But HFCC shows a
complex sked in Hausa before then via ASC or UAE, since April 15 on
Saturdays only at 1330-1600, no doubt for stupid ballgames (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** BRAZIL. 10096 USB, April 29 at 0637, brief ATC contact in
Portuguese. Nothing in EiBi, but search of UDXF iog leads to
Atlântico, Recife (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA. 332 MCW kHz, April 29 at 0706, dash and QT, 1000-watt ND
beacon at Thunder Bay ON. With 248 WG WinnipeG QRT, QT may now be my
#1 Canadian, even tho it`s co-channel to IC wIChita KS, much closer
and a hefty 400 watts itself; totally different pitches makes them
easy to distinguish. Also at 0704 a carrier on 346 kHz, likely YXL,
SiouX Lookout ON, 500 watts. Editors: please do not mess with my
capitals inside names denoting match with calls (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** CANADA. 7554-7586 approx., April 29 at 0635, wideband DRM-like
noise, centered on 7570 where it`s also audible under one of WRMI`s
strongest frequencies, aimed thisaway. Does not sound very loud but
S9/+10. Suspected this, as I posted originally on April 19 to the WOR
iog:

``CGA984, HF Trading from Ontario --- While looking for something else
in the EiBi listings, I notice: ``CANADA CGA984 HF Trading 0000-2400
-CW NAm ex``

same entry on 9 frequencies; surely merely available 24h:
``7570, 10306.5, 14592, 16301.5, 18190, 18322, 19230, 20152.9,
23861.5``

Transmitter site ex:
``ex-Essex County (Harrow), near Detroit, ON 42N92'30"-82W58'27"``

Are these really mere CW or some more complex digital mode? Could this
be the source of some wideband DRMish noise against WRMI on 7570? But
not very overpowering. There are no US or other entries designated HF
Trading, tho that is certainly in the worx if not already operating in
some cases.``

There is obviously a typo in the coördinates, probably means
42N02'30". Some DXers in adjacent Michigan also hear it circa 7570.
How about all the other frequencies? (Glenn Hauser, WOR)

** CUBA. 5025, April 29 at 0628, R. Rebelde is OFF again, as are all
the 6 MHz RHC frequencies, nor any found on higher bands this time.
Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba.

Ron Howard replied to my previous reports: ``Hi Glenn, Just like you,
on April 27, no Cuba (5025) heard at 0728, 0748, 0808 and 0844 UT.
April 28, I did in fact hear good reception of Cuba, on 5025, as early
as 0454 UT. Ron California``

And Wolfgang Büschel: ``My strong guess, 5025 was coming now at
present from Bejucal 2 x 50 kW site instead lately, because of the
un-usual oddity of fq accuracy mostly outlet on lower sideband approx.
5024.994 ... kHz. Seemingly some of the Bauta site antennas or main
power availability is difficult or even much bad, since the past
hurricane season!? At present only the five 250 kW Quivicán outlets
are in good service condition. 73 wb df5sx`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KURDISTAN [non]. 17450 and slightly stronger 17460, April 29 at
1548, JBA carriers, the only ones direct just below 17500; ergo, the
uncoordinated radio war between Denge Welat via Uzbekistan(?) and
Recep the Turkish jammer, or vice versa (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 17855, April 29 at 1547, NO signal from REE for N America,
scheduled to start at 1400 on weekends; while there is a JBA carrier
on 17715 for S America, so we know 17855 must really be off despite
poor prop. That leaves nothing better than 15520 off the back toward
ME (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 13566+ CW, April 29 at 0700, JBA HIFER beacon IDs repeated
as RVA. LWCA roster shows: `
`13566.40~ RVA Richmond VA FM17 Unknown op; CW (h,r 2023/02)``
No others on ISM band audible now (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2188 monitoring: confirmed UT
Saturday April 29 at 0130 on WRMI 5850, S9+20/30 direct. This is the
first chance each week to hear it with a bigsig across the continent.

Also confirmed UT Saturday April 29 at 0400-0429 on WBCQ R. Angela,
5130 -24 Hz = 5129.976, S8/9+5 but VG into NH SDR.

Also confirmed Saturday April 29 at 1600 on WRN N America webcast;
there are several more repeats over the weekend, I don`t usually need
to check, and also via satellite.

Also confirmed Saturday April 29 starting rather late at 2012 on
WA0RCR, 1860 AM, MO, after TWIAR, steady S9+17 groundwave into nearby

UNIDENTIFIED. 6964 AM, April 29 at 0632, JBA carrier, again suspecting
something piratical. Nothing reported currently or lately in
HFUnderground, but many in the past decade+ on or near or in USB
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR

UNIDENTIFIED. 13730, April 29 at 1550, jazz piano music, but soon
stops to dead air past 1551, S9/S5 direct, the SSOB except for the two
USignals on 13605, 13845. What`s this? Nothing at this hour in Aoki,
EiBi, but at other hours mainly jamming and Sound of Hope. HFCC, not
updated for over a week since April 21! shows:

= ELBurg, Radio Delta International, Netherlands, certainly not that
with 1 kW. Of course, all those Russian regs are imaginary. Nor
anything fitting in latest WRTH Update.

By 1608 I`m on Maryland SDR which gets a JBA carrier varying around -9
Hz offset; and UTwente, JBA carrier around -12 Hz offset. Maybe was a
test from a major site, perhaps Asia/Pacific more likely (Glenn

** CUBA. 5025, April 28 at 0327, R. Rebelde is off again, into Georgia
SDR. It was off last night but then detected in the daytime. No, 4765
Progreso remains off too. Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba. But
at 0703, 5025 is on again, S9/+10 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 12200, April 28 at 0710, RHC S9+10, English mod audible only
in AM mode; in USB & LSB just a screeching sound, same as heard
earlier on 6100 at 0659 with music; i.e. second harmonic, and 12200 is
stronger than 6100. Both cut off abruptly at 0712.5*. Something`s
always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ITALY [non]. 7290, Fri Apr 28 at 1800, IRRS SW via Bulgaria,
S9+10/20 into UTwente. I`m just curious what is going out now during
the hour which once accommodated WOR. `Feature Story News` followed by
-sounds like- VOA News, some music fill; 1817 a PSA for Al-Anon - with
US tollfree number, so is that of any use in Europe or beyond? 1818
starts `Radio Curious` which I soon found matching this from their
webarchive, originally broadcast Apr 19, 2005:
http://www.radiocurious.org/2023/04/06/david-osborn-the-papal-conclave-2/
Length is 29:00 --- but guess what, chopped off less than halfway thru
at 1830 for FSN again, then a music show with a DJ I did not catch the
identity of. Yet another sad example of IRRS filling `generic` airtime
with fragments of free programs. Anyhow lots of interesting stuff at R
Curious. Among many different categories, there is Radio (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KIRITIMATI. 846 kHz, April 28 at 0622, JJBBA carrier direct from R.
Kiribati and no other 9/kHz splits in MW bandscan. Ron Howard was
hearing it later upon Asilomar State Beach, California: ``KIRITIMATI.
846, R. Kiribati, 0741-0800 UT, April 28. A rare reception with
definite audio; religious program with what
sounded like YL preaching and playing religious music/songs; very poor
to poor reception with QRM; my audio is at -``
https://app.box.com/s/ooevd6998f0wn65tgjv7ne6st4pv7c3w
Lots of splatter, maybe from 840 KXNT Nevada? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 17855, Fri Apr 28 at 2200, token English from SNR, previews
that after news will be about Meryl Streep receiving the first
Princess of Asturias prize this year; later a report from Beirut
correspondent about Armenians in Lebanon. Music heard already at 2205,
Lebanon report at 2207, earlier not later: on descendants of survivors
of the Turkish genocide which Turkey still refuses to recognize, well
integrated into Leb. society, represented in parliament; most live in
a certain Beirut suburb. Via Maryland SDR, 17855 is VG; 15520 off the
back to ME is almost as strong, then 17715 for SAm, inaudible 11670
for Af, and 11670 also off/inaudible to UTwente. Something`s not right
at Noblejas. 2220 Meryl`s speech about Freedom of the Press, CPJ.
Oops, outro that speech was from Golden Globes years ago. Her field is
the Arts: different awards follow in other fields each week thru June
14:
https://www.fpa.es/en/princess-of-asturias-awards/laureates/
2228 fill with some music with words of Nelson Mandela in 1964y (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 11785.003, Apr 28 at 2157, VOT IS & ID, S9+30/40 into
UTwente, overmodulated and slightly distorted. Also ACI splash from
11780 Brasil unless narrowed to 5 kHz, or USB-tuned. Brief spot after
news presumably `Review of the Turkish Press`; 2210 song; 2213 `Always
By Your Side` VOT promo liner; and `Weekly Analysis`, something about
Erdowan`s re-elexion bid. 2221 music. 2233 `Feeling Supreme/The
Healing Spring` about methods to combat dandruff --- is this a first
in the history of ISWBC? 2240 music. 2244 `Did You Know That` about
friendship, WWI battlefield, Gallipoli. The extreme-accented YL is
speaking slowly, giving it a try. The SDR is stuttering now, not
helpful, and the signal is weakening. 2253 s/off of the 1230, 1830,
2130 and 1630 broadcasts only. Are the studio announcers so out of it
that they don`t realize there are still some other airings including
this very one? 2255 IS plays for less than a minute before chopoff
air. Something`s always awry at Ankara, erroneous at Emirler (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2188 monitoring: confirmed first
SWBC, Friday April 28 at 1430 on WRMI 9955, S4/S7, no jamming audible;
still at 1450 recheck presumably fully until 1459; then off, no signal
by 1509.

Not confirmed Fri Apr 28 at 2030 on IRRS SW via AM Italia 1323; I had
set up to record in my absence but the SDR crapped out during
`Wavescan` before WOR would have started. Did anyone hear it? Anyhow I
confirmed neither 918 nor 207 on air before I left. Next:

** U S A [and non]. April 28 at 1511, NO signals at all on 16m except
nearest 17790 WRMI. More signals on 19m, mostly weak with Doppler
flutter including 15520 Spain; 15825 WWCR is L&C, closest via sporadic
E. 22m signals are weak and Doppler-fluttery all over except for
nearest 13845 WWCR and 13605 Grimesland. Must be quite a geomag
disturbance again. WWV reports:

``:Product: Geophysical Alert Message wwv.txt

** U S A. 9395, April 28 at 0706, this WRMI is unusually absent; while
9455 & 9955 remain nominal. At 1516, 9395 is on with TOMBS while 9955
is missing as scheduled. Something`s off at Okeechobee (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** U S A. 7505, April 28 at 0703, WRNO in dead air again, S7/S9.
Something`s messedup at Metairie (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VANUATU. 7890, April 28 at 0705, JBA carrier from R. Vanuatu on 2 x
3945; and 11835 at 0714 is S7/S9 with Bislama talk on 3 x 3945. Ron
Howard reports:

``0701-0715, news and sports in Bislama (lead story about Chinese
"warship 989" arrived in Port Vila harbor this morning to download
relief supplies and on hand to welcome the crew were Prime Minister of
Vanuatu Ishmael Kalsakau and Chinese Ambassador to Vanuatu the
Honorable Li Minggang, who had a sound bite in English...`` (Glenn

THE TINY TRAP

``This tiny island nation``, CNN reporter Erica Hill calls the
UKOGBANI, discussing the upcoming coronation of King Charles III,
April 28 at 1454 GMT; and isn`t it about time to remove the
paternalistic, sexist nation name, if not 70 years ago? Make it:

** ANTARCTICA [non?]. Correcting second time cited: 2340, not 2240:
15475.98 RC USB, again this Wed, April 26, I neglect to check for
LRA36 as early as 20 or 21 UT, but no one else reports it either. I do
tune from 2309 via Argentine remote, not hearing it but instead some
intermittent rather musical utilitones. Can be roughly once a minute
or much less often, to 2340. Sounds like same sequence each time. They
last only a few sex, never enough time to try to pinpoint the
reference/carrier frequency if any. I do also hear them on 15478 USB
where the tones are of course quite different. I suppose these have
nothing to do with LRA36? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2188)

** CUBA. 5025, April 27 at 0607, R. Rebelde is OFF -- had been
reliably on with VG, very wide signal. Check at 1615 into Boca Ratón
FL SDR, can tell it`s on VP, S6/S7; don`t know if that`s normal for
midday. Not at all into Orlando; and Key West is offline (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2188)

** MEXICO. 6185-, April 27 at 0606, S9/+10 of dead air from XEPPM,
which happens all too often late at night (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF
RADIO 2188)

** NORTH AMERICA. 7400 AM, April 27 at 0557, S6/S8 a few words spoken,
seem like Russian, into music thru hourtop. Presumed R. Vostochnaya

** U S A. 395 MCW kHz, April 27 at 0642 UT, CA, 25-watt ND beacon at
Newton / Harvs KS, JBA but usually blocked by local HNL peaking around
400 kHz, which must have abated slightly. Likewise for 407 kHz, HRU,
25-watt ND beacon at Herington KS. Also now need to overcome external
high storm noise level (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, WOR)

** U S A. 4095, April 27 at 0610, sweeps up and occasional DW in CW,
the Desert Whooper, JBA despite HSNL; logged for the record as usually
audible (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 2097.3 CW, April 27 at 0611, single-letter beacon A, JBA in
HSNL; usually audible but logged for the record. Probably SW USA,
anywhere but Quartzsite AZ (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 7505, April 27 at 0559, S9+30 of dead air from WRNO, still

RADIO 2188)

** U S A. The latest from George McClintock, on fixing WTWW-1:
``Subject: WTWW: final power module found --- ALL, I don't fully
understand but someone or Jason sent a burned up power module to be
copied. The company said they could not do it. The module has been
sent to me and I should have it on this Friday. This is the missing
module number 48 of 48 for transmitter #1. I will now have all the
power modules. I am still missing 4 control cards for the power
modules and am waiting to see if Continental can find some damaged
control cards lying around to send to me. George McClintock
4-27-2023`` (via Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ANTARCTICA [non?]. 15475.98 RC USB, again this Wed, April 26, I
neglect to check for LRA36 as early as 20 or 21 UT, but no one else
reports it either. I do tune from 2309 via Argentine remote, not
hearing it but instead some intermittent rather musical utilitones. Can
be roughly once a minute or much less often, to 2240. Sounds like same
sequence each time. They last only a few sex, never enough time to try
to pinpoint the reference/carrier frequency if any. I do also hear
them on 15478 where the tones are of course quite different. I suppose
these have nothing to do with LRA36? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KURDISTAN [non]. 17460.010, April 26 at 1519, S9+15 into UTwente
SDR of a speech, so a Recep Turkish jammer? While 17480.008 has a YL
talking, S9+20, so Dengê Welat? Anyhow they are failing to collide, so
what`s the point? Something`s always erroneous at Emirler. Next check
at 1605: 17480 with OM talking over music background; 17460 with
choral music. At 1648: 17460 still music; but 17480 has changed to
17470, with talk at S9+25/35. At 1657 on 17470 I axually perceive a
``Dengê Welat`` ID. That means ``country voice``, preceded by sounded
similar to ``inja`` which appears in Farsi IDs as ``here``. Google
translate suggests it could be ``li vin`` = ``here`` in Kurmanji
Kurdish. At 1737, music and shouting on 17460, weaker than talk on
17470. At 1755, both are finally on same 17460 with a SAH. At 1800 the
dominant one crossfades from a vocal song to instrumental music,
shortly YL talk, mentioning ``Kurdistan`` several times, but no
explicit ID for D.W. heard. At 1839 both are still on 17460, talk
and/or music, and the SAH is 2 Hz, as fits for the original .008 and
.010 measurements on different frequencies. Not rechecked until 2033,
when there is only one signal and on 17470.008, talk S8/S9 with no
CCI, 2044 into music. All this via UTwente SDR (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** SPAIN. 17855, Wed Apr 26 at 2200, token English from SNR is not off
the air today, rather sufficient direct tho with some deep fades,
better than 15520, 17715. News first about Bras. Pres. Lula visit to
Spain and reluctance to side with Ukraine against Russia. Feature from
2207 is about the opera ``Nixon in China`` being produced for first
time in Spain at Royal Opera House = Teatro Real. Interviews with
minimalist composer John Adams who considers himself a synthesizer,
not innovator, same difference among classical composers. Also with
various others involved in the produxion. It`s daunting, as part of
the time different singers are not in unison but singing different
texts in different keys simultaneously. First produced in 1987y, one
sesquidecade after the real event. Boner: Hélena refers to ``Mrs.
Tse-tung`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 11785, April 26 at 2158 & 2230 chex, NO VOT English signal
audible direct. Something`s always erroneous at Emirler (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** U S A. More from George McClintock about repairing WTWW with
captions to close-up multi-MB photos:

``Subject: WTWW: not enough control cards --- I have only 5 power
modules for 6 empty slots out of 48 in transmitter #1. 2 power modules
are now being repaired.

I have only 2 control cards to use for the 5 power cards. I am short 4
control cards. I have been unable to find any more on the property.
THEY have done something with the cards. NO CHANCE THEY will tell us
anything about where the cards are. Continental says they do not have
any and cannot make any more. George McClintock 4-23-2023``

``Subject: WTWW: typical repair problems --- Burned resistors on power
modules left by the GOOD OLD BOYS. Bad traces repaired. Burned in half
resistor. George McClintock 4-21-2023``

``Subject: WTWW: #1 transmitter repair --- This is what I face in
trying to get all of the transmitter burned up power modules
operational. I have replaced 7 burned transformers on the power
modules. I have only one transformer left and hope I do not need any
more as I only ordered 8. Of the required 48 power modules, I am short
one (1). The real problem is that I am short 4 control cards and they
are not anywhere to be found. THEY have done something with the cards
and I am sure THEY will not tell us. Continental says they do not make
these cards anymore. I will ask if they have some damaged or half
built cards lying around. George McClintock 4-24-2023`` (via Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)
