** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98 RC USB, Sat March 4 at 2037 I posted to WOR
iog: ``[WOR] LRA36 imminent again --- Reminder that LRA36 Antarctica
is scheduled to start another 6-hour broadcast shortly at 2100 UT
Saturday March 4 on 15475.98 RC USB. Usually is on somewhat earlier
with musical prelude. Glenn``

Manuel Méndez, Spain, quickly replied that it came on at *2040, and
then many other reports of it, but I did not get it until 2335, S7/S9
into Argentine remote. 2342, Morse code and English: ``CQ, CQ from
LU1ZV,`` mentions Feb 24, and apparent replay here of the real ``ham
broadcast`` last week on 14336 USB, ``Antarctic Radio Bulletin`` with
efemérides for various Feb dates, ``Uniting Voices``. Seems to imply
that regular sked of LRA36 will be Wed at 20, Sat at 21 UT. 2359
mottoes, contact info, whatsapp for LU1ZV. March 5 at 0001 autoID in
Spanish, music; recheck at 0020 already off: so much for a ``6-hour``
broadcast. Bruce Churchill, listening via VE6JY remote in Edmonton,
says carrier cutoff in midsong at 0018:15* (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. March 5 at 0747, NO RHCs to be found on 5, 6, 10 or 11 MHz
bands; boding ill for Esperanto Sunday at 0800. A carrier on 12120
might have been 2 x 6060, and no other broadcast now on 12120 per Aoki
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 9330, Sun Mar 5 at 0759, Spy Numbers presumably about to end
non-daily 0700 transmission; and no sign of WBCQ/WLCR (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** CUBA [non]. 6030, 7355, 7435, Sun Mar 5 at 0749, 0806, R. Martí is
still on with bigsigs in Spanish, like S9+30/40 with hardly any
jamming audible. Had been totally off SW 05-11, or 7435 off at 05-13.
Wonder why the stepup now, all night? Cuban jamming had been running
already just in case (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** JAPAN. 13860, March 5 at 0744, ballad song and Japanese talk,
S8/9+10, another bigsig on 22m besides 13755 NZ: NHK at 0655-0900.
HFCC shows 85 degrees for CIRAFs 14 & 16 = Southern Cone of Chile,
Argentina, and parts of neighboring countries: that`s 4-6 am local,
where there must be a lot of JJ migrant early-risers? Probably also VG
to Hawai`i flanking midnight (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KIRITIMATI. 846 kHz, March 5 at 0808, no JBA carrier from R.
Kiribati, presumably another silent Sunday; nor any other 9/kHz splits
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 12030, March 4 at 2228, no signal from SNR ME frequency,
while the other three are well audible direct: 11940, 9690, 11685. If
it`s Sunday, there is no English (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 5960.016, March 4 at 2319, VOT English is on, S9+25/40 into
UTwente with fast SAH, presumably from XJPBS closer to on-frequency.
At 2321, ``Always by your side`` promo but now reads 5960.004: unclear
if TRT axually shifted or is locking onto understation? And song. 2326
salute to foreign Search & Rescue teams. 2328 YL with ``whipping
piles``? about how gratitude is the path to happiness. 2333 `ABYS`
promo again. 2341 recheck ``VOT always with you`` variation promo,
`Turkey`s Geomarked Products`, i.e. apples. I`m trying to monitor
ANTARCTICA at same time. 2356 VOT IS is playing before closedown
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2180 monitoring: confirmed Saturday
March 4 from 2028 on WA0RCR, 1860 AM, MO, S9+20 into nearby SDR.

vs HNL; and // synchronized on 15770, bettter S6/S8.

Also confirmed UT Sunday March 5 at 0030 on WRMI 7780, S7/S8 into
Maryland SDR.

Also confirmed UT Sunday March 5 from 0414 on WA0RCR, 1860 AM, MO,
nearby SDR not available, but respectable S5/S8 into Maryland SDR.

** U S A. 15770, March 5 at 0745, JBA presumably really WRMI running
all-night on high band with TOMBS: yet amounts to SSOB vs several JBA
carriers lower on 15 MHz (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VANUATU. 11835 & 7890, March 5 at 0805, no signals from RV
harmonix. Manuel Méndez heard 7260 closing at 0659* but then not heard
on any other known frequency. Tony Rogers, BDXC-UK agrees but live
stream was working until 1102* (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 1710 kHz, March 5 at 0810 UT, concluding my 9/kHz split
TA/TP bandscan on 1709 USB detects two JBA carriers beating here;
usually just one. There is a part 15 Spanish church station in
Lexington KY, and TIS possibilities further east among many others

** CUBA. 11670 & 11760, March 4 at 0735, no overtime carriers from RHC
unlike most madrugadas recently. Something`s always wrong at RHC
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NEW ZEALAND. 7242 LSB, March 4 at 0743, unusual call ZM4T making
rapid contest contacts with US states specified; sounds like American
accent. I failed to note exact frequency on 40m, but later found it at
dxheat for this very minute. Lots of info here, including layout
diagram of stations, photos:

``ZM4T New Zealand flag New Zealand

New Zealand

We are a contest group, not simply a radio club. Contesting is what
binds us together and gets us going. It’s what makes us tick. The
group was initially formed and lead by Lee, ZL2AL (SK in 2015). ZM4T
is located in Hawke's Bay, 30 minutes South of the cities of Napier &
Hastings, New Zealand on the East Coast of the North Island. The
location changed in 2015 from 20 km North of Napier where we were
guests at a local farm site to the Kiwi-DX-Lodge (ZL3IO). We are now
about 3-4 km inland and about 320 m above sea level on a high ridge
looking out East across the Pacific Ocean towards North/South America.
We participate in many contests as Multi OP team but also in Single
Operator classes. We are regulars in world wide contests like WWDX,
WPX, WAE, ARRL DX, AA, Oceania DX and many others using SSB, CW &
RTTY.

Our local members are ZL2MY, ZL2IFB, ZL2WG, ZL3IO, ZL4YL and the
occasional guest operators that we always Welcome. Since we moved to
the Kiwi-DX-Lodge we can accommodate guest operators incl. their
families. It all started in 2006 as ZM2M. In 2009 we changed the call
to ZM4T.``

As I was checking for VON & VBTC on 7255 & 7260, I noticed that 40m
was crammed with phonehams in the 7100-7250 range, but hardly any
activity 7250-7300. Of course, outside Region 2, no hams above 7200
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NIGERIA. 7254.93, March 4 at 0738, VON dead air at S8/S9, when I
hear a ham calling CQ in English while I am listening in AM mode; i.e.
he is zero-beat on VON as BFO pretend-AM; but nothing further, no ID
caught (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2180 monitoring: confirmed UT

Also confirmed UT Saturday March 4 at 0500 on WBCQ Radio Angela, 5130
minus 9 Hz into Maryland SDR = 5129.991, S9/+10.

Also confirmed on WRN NAm webcast, Saturday March 4 at 1700.

** U S A. (7490v), UT Sat Mar 4 at 0100, WBCQ webcast for `AAAWWW`
soon obviously a playback of last week`s prayerful screed by Allan;
never mind (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 9975, UT Sat Mar 4 at 0300, KVOH is certainly back on after
absence 6 nights ago, S9+20/30 with ID just as I tune in & out, saving
myself from salvation (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 12160, Sat Mar 4 at 1800, WWCR-2 listening mainly to
webcast: starts saying is returning to air after maintenance, then
`The Talking [sic] Machine Show`, the only WWCR produxion worth
listening to. At 1817, webcast restarts! while 12160 itself is dead
air; totally out of synch. By 1830, 12160 back to usual gospel huxter.
At 1834 webcast restarts! TTMS with ``Irish Eyes Are Smiling``.
WRecheck at 1852, *another* restart of same at least on the Winamp I
have wrunning. And *again* at 1908: music stops, pause, and
``returning to air``. At 1910 I click on the other streaming link, mp3
- and it is gospel huxtering apparently lively. I close and then
reopen the Winamp and now it`s `live`, no more Irish Eyes. Something`s
wreally wacky at WWCR (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. Re ex-720, how does KDWN manage to be on 101.5, only a
translator?

Frank Merrill Jr., Chicago, replies on HCDX: ``Glen[n] Hauser's
question about KDWN translator (now that KDWN-720 is gone) --- I think
that KDWN continues to exist as an HD-2 "primary" on one of the major
FM stations, and the FM is merely translating that. That's apparently
legal, because I've heard at least one that was doing that. A few
years ago I heard a Bonner Springs KS translator on 102.5 as "Comedy
102.5" - and their legal ID as the HD-2 for, I think, the 94.9 biggie.
So, yes, they can translate an HD subchannel, and in effect the
translator is the "primary" but they're allowed to run it as a
translator. Hard-Core-DX mailing list``

Greg Hardison, CA, also replies on WOR iog: ``"...how do they manage
that with no AM to relay?..."

101.5 echoes an HD-channel from one of Audacy's full-power FMs, an
FCC-legal and widely used method of preserving services such as KDWN &
KXST. I wonder if the talker still calls itself "K-Dawn", or even
"KDWN", while actually having no per se bonding with the call
letters?``

Yes, I later realized that when hearing the clear ``legal`` ID on the
YouTube clip. As in WTFDA db, the intermediary is KMXB, i.e. what
K268CS relays on 101.5, that is, the HD3 subchannel of KMXB which is a
100 kW on 94.1 licensed to Henderson, not LV.

It seems neither FCC nor WTFDA know what`s really programmed on that
HD3! HD subchannel info is very deficient; does anyone or anyentity
keep track of them?
73, (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VANUATU. 7260, March 4 at 0738, RV is JBA here, despite Gary Pence
and Tony Rogers detecting them on 3945, 7890 and 11835 last night. Now
at 0734 I could hear nothing on the harmonix. But maybe they are about
to use 3945 fundamentally again?

Follow-up at 1918 UT March 4 from Tony Rogers, BDXC-UK:

``Radio Vanuatu was heard on 7260 kHz with good reception when checked
at 0950 UT this morning (4 March) on the Brisbane KiwiSDR. The
emergency broadcast was still in operation with a talk in Bislama
about the emergency situation throughout the country. The news
followed at 1000 UT (9 pm local time) with reports of damage that the
cyclones have caused to the various islands.

Checking this evening (4 March) at their usual sign-on time of 1830
(that would be for the start of the Sunday broadcast at 5.30 am local
time), there seemed to be no trace of them on shortwave 3945, 5040 or
7260 kHz (or any of the harmonics that are sometimes heard). The live
streams for Radio Vanuatu, Paradise FM and Femme Pawa FM were also
silent. The RNZ News website was reporting extensive power outages
though in Vanuatu. Tony`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 7710 USB, March 4 at 0736, JBA 2-way seems like tonal
Asian language; one of them is quite lively, and there is a noise
burst after each transmission, like relay of FM squelching? (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KIRITIMATI. 846 kHz, March 3 at 0743 UT, JBA carrier from R.
Kiribati and no other 9/kHz splits; except possibly 1044 with JJBBA
carrier. Now just about too late for TA Eurafrica, but Spain? TP, only
a 10 kW in NZ would be dark (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA [and non]. 341 MCW kHz, March 3 at 0746 UT, can`t make out
local NDB, EI at Woodring Airport, EnId; just OIN, OberlIN KS.
Normally EI is as weak as OIN and only three dits sometimes obscured
by the longer OIN call if they do not happen to be alternating at
different periods. However, at 2108, EI is definitely on and only one
audible (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 12030, Friday March 3 at 2300, token English from SNR, VG
here direct off the back of the ME beam, and overally sounds
marginally better than NAm [not ``Nam``] channel 9690; weaker 11940
SAm and 11685 squeally for Af are also on. At 2306 after news, Justin
Coe presents what amounts partially to a `Radio Waves` mailbag after a
long absence, based on correspondence from only one listener, Greg[g?]
Hathaway in Ann Arbor MI. His latest email was Dec 29 about J`s
interview with ex-BBC correspondent in Spain, Frank, back on Oct 22.
Greg complains that webcast goes into buffering every 3 minutes unlike
other stations so could RNE fix that? Justin implies don`t hold your
breath but passes on the info. Then he retrieves previous mail from
long-time listener Greg as far back at 2011y who was listening then on
6055 at 0000 UT. Justin says the SW receivers he got were a Sony
ICF-7601 and a Panasonic RFB-65. On Dec 1, 2012, the English broadcast
was cut without notice to the staff or listeners, management`s way of
finding out whether anyone cared. Greg did, and it was resumed a few
days later after this brief crisis.

Then on to other topix with Justin. 2316 song, `Trip to Everywhere`.
2318 doctors on strike due to insufficiencies of health care being
changed from federal to ``autonomous`` regional levels. 2321
discussing terminology: should Roma replace Gypsies, etc.? Refers to
website of Brazilian guest, www.LeonardoMartinsDias.com --- 2326 bit
of music, Queen of Sheba from Handel`s Solomon oratorio (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** TAIWAN. 11745, March 3 at 0818, S9/+10 in Japanese from RTI via
Paochung site this hour. Carries on well to here far beyond (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 5960, March 3 at 2258 direct, I can tell that VOT is on
with IS, but too poor to copy, so no excuse for not listening to
SPAIN, hi, q.v. (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2180 monitoring: NOT confirmed UT
Friday March 3 at 0330 on WRMI 7780, which had been our first SW
airing anywhere; instead Alameda Bible in Spanish -- now that gets
blasted by noise for the first 14 seconds, as heard direct. Checking
the WRMI skedgrids, there do not appear to be any open slots on any
system or frequency early UT Friday where WOR might refit.

I hate to recommend download or podcast over SW, but if you want it
when it`s hot off the `press`, you need to get WOR that way, usually
ready by 0200 UT Fridays. Sometimes I mention very perishable info,
like specials barely in time. We still have several airings later,
well-heard in North America, such as 5850, 9395, 15770.

Confirmed Friday March 3 at 1530-1559 on WRMI 9955, VP direct S5/S8
with no jamming audible. At least WRMI lately has been keeping this on
until WOR is finished rather than turning it off earlier other
weekdays. We still have some later good airings.

Also confirmed Friday March 3 at 2130 on IRRS SW via AM Itaiia, 1323
kHz only, S9+10/20 into nearby Noale SDR; well atop CCI from an
understation, presumably Smooth Radio, Brighton, England; with Romania
as usual closed down by now. The IRRS break at 2129 after Wavescan,
was asking for donations. Next:

** U S A. 9330v, March 3 at 0811, no signal from WLCR/WBCQ. Wonder
what`s wrong now? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 720 kHz, March 3 at 0750 UT, on the DX-398 with WGN nulled,
KDWN final final DX test heard again as supposed to start at 0746.
This time heard a goodbye ``thanks for listening to KDWN`` referring
to 101.5 FM where it will continue but is really a mere translator:
how do they manage that with no AM to relay?; Nevada state song about
the desert etc.; 0751 IDs also for a translator? in Henderson; and the
rest same as heard last time: 0752 `Star Spangled Banner`; 0753.7 SSTV
beepery; 0757 Morse Code including several KDWN IDs, starting and
ending with QST. Before it became a magazine, in the Q-codes, QST was
defined as ``General call preceding a message addressed to all
amateurs and ARRL members. This is in effect “CQ ARRL.`` --- at least
that is how ARRL defines it. So this wasn`t even for us, non-ham BCB
DXers!

On the WOR iog: ``A poster (“NickD”) on the RadioDiscussions site
recorded the final sign off of both stations, including the Morse Code
goodbye as well as SSTV images of the transmitters.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyddrXyTBXI
Stephen Luce, Houston, Texas``

WTFDA Database does not show any Henderson station associated with
KDWN 720! As for 101.5 in Vegas, no relation either:
``K268CS relay of:KMXB-HD3 101.5 LAS VEGAS NV USA 0.25 0.25 0.0 0.0
36-08-55 115-09-15 D1ED`` Yes, website now claims 101.5 only:
https://www.audacy.com/stations/kdwn#
FCC FM Query for NV 101.5 hits only K268CS in LV, licensed to Audacy,
nothing more.

So did both really turn off this time? Later I search out the state
song, ``Home Means Nevada``. Here is a version with lyrix:
https://youtu.be/OpY-I0eAInA
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 1140 kHz, March 3 at 0655-0717 UT, listening for a possible
final final DX test from KXST Las Vegas NV, but no sign of it, just a
mélange of unID signals presumably again including Greybull cheater
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VANUATU. 7260, March 3 before & after 0800, I don`t have a log
entry for RV when I was mainly monitoring Nevada and trying to stay
awake. However, these reports:

From Tony Rogers, BDXC-UK at 2039 March 3: ``No trace on Radio Vanuatu
on 7260 kHz when I checked this morning (3 March) around 0800 UTC on
the Brisbane KiwiSDR. Gary Pence confirmed this on the World of Radio
iog whilst using the Half Moon Bay KiwiSDR in California at 0939, but
he detected a weak carrier on 3945 kHz, a stronger S7 carrier on 7890
kHz (the second harmonic) and S5 carrier with weak or no audio on
11835 kHz (the third harmonic). I had also noted that carrier on 11835
kHz.

This evening (3 March), first checked on the Brisbane KiwiSDR at 1855
UTC and found nothing on 7260 kHz, but there was a carrier with no
audio on 5040 kHz, one of their alternative frequencies. The live
stream had no audio at 1855 but sprung into life at 1901, news reports
and emergency reports followed in Bislama from which it was easy to
determine that the situation was/is quite serious as the BBC News
report implied,

** CUBA. 11760, March 2 at 0748, S9+20 of dead air; AND 11670, S9/+10
of dead air; obviously RHC which may have been modulating English or
Spanish before 0700; while no RHC signals remain on 5, 6 or 10 MHz
bands. Something`s always wrong at RHC. The Other Side:

``One year of war in Ukraine: a timeline of the Cuban regime's support
for its Russian ally --- Havana has tried to ease the UN’s pressure on
Moscow and has echoed Putin's disinformation in Latin America. DDC
Madrid 01 Mar 2023 - 01:47 CET

Russia's war in Ukraine is one year old. Since February 24, 2022, more
than 42,200 people have died and 14 million have been displaced in
what Vladimir Putin defined in his speech as a "special military
operation" in defense of the Donbas region. Beyond the human and
material consequences for Ukrainians, the first territorial invasion
of a sovereign state in Europe in 80 years has had international
repercussions, from food to energy.

What the western democracies condemned from the very first moment, and
continue to today, with heavy sanctions against the aggressor, was
justified by the Cuban regime, also from the beginning of the
conflict. Havana has been in charge of reducing pressure on Moscow
exerted by the United Nations, and has disseminated the disinformation
spouted by Putin across Latin America...``

** U S A [and non]. 1140 kHz, March 2 at 0700 UT, rock music dominant
on both DX-398 and R75 with E/W longwire. I`m here for an unconfirmed
DX test by KXST Las Vegas, sibling station to 720 KDWN, both about to
go dark. I never hear any sign of KXST with gambling format or
anything. Instead, it`s ``Good Time Oldies``, 1140 KZMQ IDs heard at
0701, 0707. That`s a 10 kW *daytimer*, non-direxional in Greybull,
Wyoming, but address in Cody some 40 miles west. I see it`s been
reported at night before as early as 2020, and as recently as last
month. But not this: ``1140 KZMQ Greybull, WY old slogan: “Good Time
Oldies”, new: “Star 92.9”`` as per Broadcasting Info, IRCA DX Monitor
Feb 25 --- no mention of the latter, still G-T-O.

Meanwhile on 1140 also noted: 0701 ABC news, 0709 Coast-to-Coast, both
likely WRVA Richmond VA; 0710 XEMR Monterrey, Spanish from south
plugging its platforms but asserting that AM is still primary,
probably a gospel huxter (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2180)

** VANUATU [and non]. 7260, March 2 at 0740, R. Vanuatu back on
tonight, S8/S9 with JBA talk probably cyclone warnings; aside Nigeria
7255- dead air. Others` reports:

Ron Howard: ``7260, Radio Vanuatu: Feb 28 - From 0742+ UT; tuned in to
hear emergency sirens followed by multi-language cyclone warnings for
Tropical Cyclone Judy and advising people to have plenty of water,
food for 2 to 3 days, have candles, batteries, etc. due to electricity
possibly being off for several days, and for information, listen to
TV, Radio Vanuatu and check the Internet; followed by more sirens;
0750, the usual advertisement for the "mobile stage" for events in
Vanuatu and PSA for mental health; 0831, more sirens and cyclone
warning/advisories.

March 2 - From 1002+ UT; emergency sirens and advising people to
listen to TV, Radio Vanuatu and the Internet for the latest cyclone
info; 1007-1017, sounded like the Prime Minister's speech to the the
nation (poor audio quality); 1026, "Tropical Cyclone Warning Number 4"
for cyclone Kevin, giving location, direction, and speed.

. Map showing the location of cyclone Kevin -
https://zoom.earth/storms/kevin-2023/
RV totally blocked at 1057, with very strong sign on of CRI, in
Japanese (*1057-1257* UT). Ron, California``

And Tony Rogers, UK, BDXC: ``Checked for Radio Vanuatu on the Te
Kauwhata KiwiSDR in New Zealand at just after 1200 UTC today (2 March)
and found them back on 7260 kHz with an emergency broadcast now in
place for Tropical Cyclone Kevin. 7260 kHz also has CRI Japanese
between 1100-1300 (from Xian 500 kW) but Radio Vanuatu still well
audible on this SDR. 73’s Tony`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO
2180)

UNIDENTIFIED. 9510.1, March 2 at 0759, S9 carrier with hum, one
zero-beat about +0.1 kHz. It seems no one else is interested in
pursuing this? Ah, here is one other report: ``9510 S8 hum back;
missing a few days; 1723, 3/1; 1438, 3/2 (Harold Frodge-MI)`` (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 9895 USB, March 2 at 0756, JBA 2-way seems like Spanish
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
