Glenn Hauser logs July 15, 2023  View Printable Version

Hauser
** ALGERIA. 13590, July 15 at 0111, S7/S9 of just barely modulated
music, presumed Ifrikya FM as usual. Nothing on 13790 now. The latter
is always there after 0600 making a double het with CNR1/RFA Saipan.
EiBi, Aoki, HFCC July 13 and WRTH Update #15 as of July 14 all agree
on: 21-03 13590, 131 degrees from Béchar; 13790 20-09, 210 from
Ouargla. And they are all wrong, quoting excessive registrations
rather than monitored usage (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98 RC USB, Saturday July 15 at tune-in 1905 via
Argentine remote, LRA36 good S9+15 but zero signal direct, just as
they are IDing for RAE, credits mentioning the Catamarca FM station;
1907 produced segment with music background about Malvinas, etc., etc.
At 2000 still talking about Catamarca, maybe playing segment produced
there. JBA S5/S6 by 2042, local noise level undiminished, and
inaudible by 2100, off early? Regular Saturday broadcasts nominally
18-23 UT (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6869.9 AM, July 15 at 0615, unID pirate once again
late-night, vs storm noise level. Only station on band. Two more logs
this date, 0435-0705*:
https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,115940.0.html
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6200 AM, July 15 at 0630, JBA carrier, now assumed
pirate R. Vostochnaya Zvezda, ex-7400v (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 11785, July 15 at 2243, no VOT English signal into UTwente,
probably missed entire 2200+ broadcast. Something`s always erroneous
at Emirler (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2199 monitoring: confirmed what is now the
first SW airing, 24+ hours after completion, UT Saturday July 15 at
0130 on WRMI 5850, S9+10/20 direct vs high storm noise level, and NOT
on 7730, something else.

WRMI skedgrids keep showing both 5850 & 7730 on red System F for WOR
and everything else daily at 00-03, but now the frequency grid atop
shows WRMI-2 on 7730 with Hal Turner from System L at 01-02 Tue-Sat.
In previous reactivations for months, 7730 has not really had WOR.

Confirmed Saturday July 15 at 1600 on WRN N America webcast.

Also confirmed Saturday July 15 at 1930, just started on WA0RCR, 1860
AM, MO, S9+15 into nearby SDR and no storm noise, ending at 1957 so
began circa 1928. Next:

0030 UT Sunday WRMI 7780 to SW
0245vUT Sunday WA0RCR 1860-AM [nominal 0315; as late as 0457]
1330 UT Sunday WRMI 9955 to SSE
[also phonecast, webcast][jammed by Cuba?]
2000 UT Sunday IRRS 1323 & 918? & 207?-Italy

** U S A. 7490-, UT Sat July 15 at 0000, `AAAWWW` on WBCQ, poor
reception direct with storm noise, but soon obviously a rerun as he`s
recruiting two more engineers, apparently without much success. Never
mind. Still can no longer see his twits on disgraced Twitter without
signing up. Should he say anything significant there, please let us
know (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 11670, July 14 at 0645, tonight`s only extra RHC, S8/S9 in
Spanish but undermodulated with squeal. Something`s always wrong at
RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** EGYPT. 9439.995, July 14 at 2117 via UTwente no signal at first,
then R. Cairo cuts on S9+35 of very distorted hummy English at
9440.000. A few minutes later I notice it has settled to usual
9439.995. Something`s always egregious in Egypt (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. RF 17, July 14 at 1606, K17JN-D Enid is back to normal
3ABN panoply, video not black, sound not silent. BUT, at 1741 recheck,
back to dark silence yet signal meter shows it`s transmitting despite
``NO SIGNAL`` displayed on screensaver. Must be intermittent, tsk3.
But later after 1730, 1830, frozen verge frame of video sometimes
flashes on and signal meter is weak - maybe K17JN-D QRP or really off
allowing something else to attempt to reach me? Garbled and can`t
recognize anything (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 11785.009, July 14 at 2235, VOT English not off the air
today, S9+50 into UTwente, with ``Always By Your Side`` promo, then
`Feeling Supreme/The Healing Spring`, repeat on dietary advice for
breastfeeding mothers of gassy babies. 2242 music. 2248 `Did You Know
That`, spoken by the badaccentedess, something about archaeology, but
I refuse to strain to try to understand her. I wonder, would someone
else speaking English as awfully as she does, understand her better?
2252 s/off by the same, 2254 IS and shortly off*, Something`s always
awry at Ankara (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2198 monitoring:
``9395 kHz, 0030, too weak to hear,
9395 kHz, 0130, too weak local static, July 11 UTC 2023
73’s, Richard Lemke, St. Albert, Alberta, Canada``
{correct date must have been UT Thursday July 13 --- gh}

WORLD OF RADIO 2199 monitoring: NOT confirmed Friday July 14 at 1455
the 1430 on WRMI 9955! This had been our first airing, but now it`s
something undermodulated, seems like Spanish talk, then singing; also
with lite jamming audible direct. Yet another time on WRMI is canceled
without notice -- but of course still shown on the blue-green System B
skedgrid. Also, don`t you believe same sked for WOR Saturday 1930 UT
on 15770 -- that was canceled many months ago but never deleted from
sked.

Confirmed Friday July 14 at 2030 on IRRS SW via AM Italia, 1323 kHz
only, S9+10/15 into nearby Noale SDR, with little QRM at first but
growing later. Next, we hope:

0130 UT Saturday WRMI 5850 to NW, 7730? to NE
1930vUT Saturday WA0RCR 1860-AM
0030 UT Sunday WRMI 7780 to SW

** U S A. 91.5, July 14 after 2200 UT on caradio, finally the days and
days of dead air from presumed KSNS Medicine Lodge KS, is gone; since
July 7, last noted July 12, not checked on 13. Now a much weaker
signal with a far-right, far-Christian gospel huxter against Trans; no
music at all, fading in and out. If KSNS be off, the next nearest
possibility is from the south near the River Red:
KCBK 91.5 FREDERICK OK SOUTHERN GOSPEL THE GOSPEL STATION 100.0 155.0
34-21-52 98-50-04 //KCBI 90.9
Its primary KCBI once had a SW station in Dallas. KCBK is the only
other KS/OK of more than peanut power except for KANU Lawrence and
this was certainly not an NPR station (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 11500-11520, July 14 at 0646, strong multipitch wideband
whine, but goes off before I can explore it further; maybe centered at
11510. Rather like multicarrier often heard in daytime circa 17450.
What are those?? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 9535, July 13 at 0649, RHC Spanish, S7/S9, only overtime
frequency tonight (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6869.92, July 13 at 0658, unID pirate music for
another late night. S7/S8; I think there was some talk but if any ID I
missed it; 0700 change to different music style. Three more reports
here, with talk but never IDs:
https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,115889.0.html
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2199)

** OKLAHOMA. RF 17, July 14 at 0147 UT, K17JN-D, Enid`s only local TV
station -- axually a 3ABN satellator, is on with steady signal bar,
but all 7 channels are black and silent, not just the top of the 3
audio-only channels, which is always silent. BTW I have never seen any
other DTV signal with audio-only portions, but why not if you want to
allocate your resources thus. As with other unpersonned outages, this
could last for some time until HQ notice and get some contract
engineer out there to fix it (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Glenn Hauser logs July 11-12, 2023  View Printable Version
Thursday, July 13 2023

Hauser
** CUBA. 11850, July 12 at 0332, RHC is S7/9+20 but suptorted Spanish;
15230 is S7/S9 but undermodulated; 9535 audible, weaker; but one
frequency, 11670 has VG modulation and strength. Something`s always
wrong at RHC.

6000 is the only English frequency, July 12 at 0351, S9+30/45 but
undermodulated with hum. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA [non]. 5024.9, July 12 at 0353, JBA carrier with R. Rebelde
missing. Something`s wrong at RadioCuba. R. Quillabamba, Perú, has
been reported elsewhere and elsewhen on such an offset, but this may
be a local birdie since it varies down to 5024.7 (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** EGYPT. 9884.961, July 11 at 2332, as scheduled, R. Cairo has moved
from 9899.961 by 2330 for Arabic to follow Portuguese toward South
America --- and at exactly the same -19 Hz offset, as UTWente displays
both, but modulation now is even worse, only bits at peak spikes.
There is also heavy lightning over Netherlands and this S9+30/40
bigsig is not enough to suppress it completely. Also an RTTY-like
warble. Something continues egregious in Egypt (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** MEXICO [and non]. 1670, July 12 at 0401, ``Focus está contigo``,
into EZL or love song; Sportstalk in English soon takes over, no doubt
WOZN Wisconsin. First time I`ve managed to catch XEFCR, Focus Radio,
10 kW in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, a relatively new station. With a name
like that and on the border, I was wondering if it`s ever in English.
Steve Ponder had reported it June 23 so I asked him.

``Glenn, The ID’s and announcements that I have heard over several
nights of monitoring XEFCR Focus Radio (1670 kHz) have been in
Spanish. I haven’t heard any English, which is unusual to me, since
Reynosa is not that far from McAllen and Pharr. I will continue
monitoring the frequency … Steve Ponder, N5WBI, Houston, TX`` (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. Heavy tropo on maps around Enid, so a DTV bandscan July
12 at 1544 UT: BAD signals on RF: 10, 11, 14, 17, 22, 31, 34, 36.
Still at 1620, 17 is mostly bad, occasionally 3ABN, K17JN-D, so Enid`s
only local TV signal is again being overcome by DX. Decoding well are
20 KQCW-HD, 19-1 CW for Tulsa from Muskogee - and this one has NO
extra channels, what a waste. Rabbitears shows suffix as KQCW-DT; and
RF 34, 28-1 ION, KTPX-TV Okmulgee and its panoply of seven extras. At
1650 occasional decodes on RF 34 of 41-1 KMYT-TV Tulsa (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** SINGAPORE. 12025, July 12 at 1627, BBC English relay for ME, S5/S8
direct and insufficient to copy -- on ITS FINAL DAY. Walt Salmaniw, BC
reported at 1503:

``[WOR] BBC Singapore off from tomorrow 13 July 2023 --- Listening to
12025 just before 15:00 with the BBC bells, and then an announcement
that the BBC site at Singapore is going off the air tomorrow and will
no longer be available. They gave an internet option only. Very good
into Masset, although there is a weak sounding grinding sound --
either from the transmitter (I think), or another transmitter. Walt``

Kai Ludwig, Germany replies: ``The exact wording: "We start to tell
you that from tomorrow we're closing our Singapore transmitter." So
much for the replacements effective 16 July, as still shown in the
public HFCC data.

So it could be that the very last Kranji transmission has already
started, even that the St Mary-le-Bow bells have already for the very
last time introduced a BBC transmission, or are they still inserted
anywhere else?

Anyway: The very first piece of hard evidence at all. And perhaps the
only statement from the BBC on this matter at all. Kai Ludwig``

And Kai provides this historic recording July 12, 2023, at 1459 UT:
https://www.w4uvh.net/BBC_Singapore_closure_announcement.mp3
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 17855, Wed July 12 at 2200, token English from SNR, news and
2206 feature is ``a guided tour of the Royal Opera House in Madrid``,
a.k.a. in Spanish just `Teatro Real`. Interview with some official
about history of the building, etc., during a celebratory week. VG
S9/+15 into Maryland SDR and the other three frequencies also audible
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SUDAN SOUTH [non]. 11650, July 12 at 0330, Arabish language,
S7/S9+5 and HornofAfricish music -- yes, it`s R. Tamazuj via
MADAGASCAR just starting, to be followed by another hour of R. Dabanga
until 0530 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 11785.009, July 12 at 2200, VOT English is not off the air,
S9+35/45 into UTwente, but first I`m listening to simulSpain.
2225-2231 `Feeling Supreme/The Healing Spring` tips for breast-feeding
mothers how to avoid gassy babies. Mostly music then, except 2237
`Always By Your Side` plug; 2250 usual canned s/off; 2251.4 IS,
2253.5* off (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [non]. 7260, July 12 at 0348, VG S9+20/30, VOA Somali via
VATICAN, violating Separation Of Church And State, sked 0330-0400
only; before, during, and after that, Mongolia and East Turkistan
could also be on 7260, but by 0600 it`s only Vanuatu to be heard
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2198 monitoring: ``From: Richard
Lemke, St. Albert, Alberta, Canada, the desk of Richard’s listening
Post, Radio: JRC NRD-535 HF, Antenna: random long wires in the trees,
Dear Glenn: Confirming World of Radio #2198, not great reception this

Confirmed Tuesday July 11 at 2330 on WRMI 9395, S9+10/15 into Maryland
SDR.

Also confirmed Wednesday July 12 from 2059:45 = 15 seconds early on
WBCQ 7490 -70 Hz = 7489.930, S7/S9 into Maryland SDR. Next:

0030 UT Thursday WRMI 9395 to NNW
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 9395 to NNW

Next WOR 2199 should be ready for download early UT Friday July 14.

Thanks this week to John, N9JL: ``Hello Glenn, I routinely listen to
your weekly podcasts, and really enjoy them. You consistently provide
your listeners with a broad cross-section of SW and BC band related
information. In only 30 minutes I know the stations I should be tuning
for over the following several days. Please accept this small
contribution in support of your on-going efforts. 73, John, N9JL,

** U S A. 7489.930, Wed July 12 at 2130, WBCQ S7/S9 into Maryland SDR,
new program following WORLD OF RADIO -- who could ask for a better
lead-in? `Plain Old Doug Show`, brief intro, then straight novelty
Dixieland tunes, 2153 brief outro with email, 2154 into `Line Break` -
these are two survivors of `Radio Angela`, which previewed them this
way before it was decided to stop:

10:30pm-10:55pm EDT (Fridays 0230-0255 UTC):
Plain Old Doug Show
Host: Doug Feldmann (US)
Format: Doug is a long-time loyal WBCQ listener who began to try his
hand at making shows for us. Often featuring early string band music
but sometimes heads off into completely different directions.
Email: custodiandoug@aol.com

10:55pm-11:00 pm EDT (Fridays 0255-0300 UTC)
Line Break
Host: T.D. Walker (US)
Format: Poetry. T.D. Walker is the author of poetry collections and
science fiction stories as well as a shortwave radio enthusiast.
Includes selections from several other poets.
Email: qsl@linebreakshortwave.com
Website: https://www.linebreakshortwave.com/

2130 Wed is still shown as an *available timeslot on the never
up-to-date BCQ websked. BTW, on Sunday July 9 at 2200 another ATS was
occupied by another repeat of `AAAWWW`, but Bill Tilford says he plans
to resume that hour with his two main shows, FTIOM and UBMP each once
a month:

``Beginning August 6, Julio Cesar Pereira and I will be purchasing a
shared weekly hour Sundays 6-7 pm [EDT = 22-23 UT] on 7490 (right
after Marion's Attic) - I will be taking week 1 with From the Isle of
Music and week 3 with Uncle Bill's Melting Pot, Julio weeks 2 and 4
with Ginga Brasil! Unlike 5130, 7490 does livestream (but does not
archive) on the wbcq.com website. Marion's Attic and Behavior Night
have already been on the frequency for many years as was FTIOM and
UBMP for a few. At this writing, while the shortwave press has
lamented Radio Angela's passing, there has not been a sufficient
listener groundswell to be able to have any significant leverage with
possible sponsors. Personally, I am moving on, but with good feelings
about what we did while we did it.`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 7505, July 12 at 0347, WRNO in presumed Hindi but having to
resort to English to slowly convey their Fort Worth postal address,
S9/+30. Still not running overnight, off circa 0645 recheck (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 91.5, July 12 at 2213 UT, another futile check for Es FM DX
at least accomplishes this: KSNS, Medicine Lodge KS, is now into its
sixth day of dead air as first noted July 7 but probably started
earlier (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
