Logs
** ALGERIA. 17600, Apr 27 at 0641, JBA music into UTwente, so can`t
confirm any English this time. Propagation depressed, no signal direct
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA [non]. See CUBA; EAST TURKISTAN

** CUBA. 6000, April 27 at 2335, something strange here: long
narration in English but only an occasional word understood, with
continuous Chinese music background; like storytelling. Bigsig has to
be Cuban relay, not direct from China; no CRI English relays are
supposedly sked at this time nor frequency. This is Sat, but on a
weekday, 6000 would be running the alt RHC service, `Mesa Redonda`, //
11950, which is not on now. At first during AC power outage due to
storms, I`m monitoring on the D808 or DX398 portables. AC back on at
*2345, then on the NRD at S9/+10 including the HSNL. 2358 ``until next
time, goodbye``; 2359 promos in Chinese/English. 0000 no timesignal or
ID but into song, strange ToH behaviour for CNR domestic or CRI
external.

By 0044 next check into Georgia SDR, 6000 is mixing Spanish and RHC
English at equal audio levels. Spanish mentions China, so that may be
from CRI, S9+40/50. Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba. None of
this is accounted for in latest EiBi or Aoki (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** EAST TURKISTAN. 13740, Apr 27 at 2326, music and Spanish with
flutter into portables during power outage. CRI Spanish sked 2300-0057
& 0100-0300 via Kashi-Saiba per Aoki. 13740 used to be a Cuban
frequency; see also (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 27184.74 AM approx., Apr 27 at 0100, Enid CB pirate relay
of K288FX, // 105.5 (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. Tornado outbreak all day April 27, disrupted our
monitoring. Several came close to Enid but no direct hits. Two power
outages of about an hour each were also problems, 2030-2126,
2138-2245! OKC TV channels, ``4, 5, 9`` normally go to wall-to-wall
coverage with choppers and storm spotters deployed. 4 was slowest to
dispense with a stupid ballgame. We mostly followed KOCO 5. Except
during power and thus cable outages, the only station we can get on
indoor UHF loop is KFOR 4, RF 27. We did get backup AC power supplies
going to run the TV. In the past, a number of commercial AM & FM
stations in OKC would plug into live tornado coverage by one of the TV
stations. This time I could not find a single one doing so on FM; nor
AM but weaker signals blocked by high storm noise levels. Some would
break into regular programming only for NWS warnings. The additional
noise level on some of those daisy-chain relays is incredible.
Instead, KFOR coverage was being relayed by three otherwise gospel
huxters audible here, on 88.5, 89.7 and 90.5: 88.5 KZTH Piedmont is
relay of 89.7 KJTH, ``The House``, Ponca City; and 90.5 KGVV Goltry,
``My Praise/The House of Praise``. No locally-originated coverage was
to be heard on any Enid market AM or FM commercial station (Glenn
Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** TURKEY. 11785, April 27 at 2302 and still 2319, during AC power
outage due to storms, I get enough signal into portables with inside
longwire to hear some German, i.e. another erroneous Emirler TRT
overrun past the 2200 English hour (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2240 monitoring: confirmed UT
Saturday April 27 at 0130 on WRMI 5850, S9+10/28 into Missouri SDR.

Also confirmed UT Saturday April 27 from a few sex before 0400 on
WTWW, 5085, S9+15 into Missouri SDR. Followed by about a minute of
music with no formal ID or s/off to 0430*.

Not confirmed Saturday April 27 at 1450 the 1430 on SW Radio, Germany
because 6160 is OFF the air, no signal into UTwente, what`s wrong? Nor
on 3975 but which normally would not start until 1700.

Confirmed Saturday April 27 at 1616 the 1600 N America webcast of
WRN.

Confirmed Saturday April 27 at 1733 the 1730 on SW Radio, Germany,
whew, both now back on air: 3975.001 S9+5, and 6160.000 S8/9+10 into
UTwente. Yes, #2240 not 2239.

Confirmed Saturday April 27 after 1930 on WRMI webcast only, and WRN N
America webcast.

Also confirmed Saturday April 27 at 1952 the 1930v on WA0RCR, 1860 AM,
MO, about 22 minutes into.

Also confirmed Saturday April 27 after 2000 on WRN Europe webcast.

Also confirmed UT Sunday April 28 at 0000 on WRMI 9955, S8/S9 direct.

Unique Radio, Australia, as of Apr 27 ``currently off air except for
Jen live`` -- and Tim Gaynor does mean off, not even webcasting as the
program sked is now entirely blank, so we have to remove Wed 1200 &
1230 WOR entries. https://www.uniqueradio.biz/
One of Jen`s shows, `Calling All Radio Nutzzz` has been appearing
irregularly, but publicized in major DX lists a day or two before.
Last one for the season was today April 27 from 1800, including Dr
Richard E Wood`s language recognition lessons, and Ian McFarland`s
classic SW IDs and interval signals. CARNs are also archived
afterwards. Next WORs:

0230vUT Sunday WA0RCR 1860-AM [nominal 0315; as late as 0500]

Glenn Hauser logs April 25-26-27, 2024  View Printable Version
Saturday, April 27 2024

Logs
** ALGERIA [and non]. 17600, Apr 26 at 0630, another check direct of
Ifrikya FM for English segment, as reported Apr 23 & 24 but not 25.
S5/S3 in French for starters, then sounds like some Portuguese? Or am
I dreaming as dozing off. Awake at 0650, now it *is* in English with
IDs, closing at 0656 giving FM frequencies in Alger, Oran; 0700 5+1
timesignal a few sex late and French news. SSOB and would be the OSOB
if not for a JBA carrier on 17850, i.e. RFI Issoudun. Simulmonitored
by:

``Manuel Méndez, Lugo, Spain: ALGERIA, 17600 // 15160, Ifrikya FM,
English today from about 0648 to 0657, identification, "Ifrikya FM,
The Voice of Africa", comments by female, at 0657 song "Despacito" by
Luis Fonsi, French ID, comments, at 0700 French "Le Journal de
l`Information", news in French`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 15140, Apr 25 at 1903, VP signal direct, can`t be sure RHC is
in English; via Georgia SDR at 1914, yes, it`s English and with
flanking spurs about plus/minus 3.6 kHz, clearly on the H2Ofall. 11760
is not on. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
date correct, missed in previous report

** OKLAHOMA. 27184.74 approx., Apr 27 at 0100, Enid CB pirate is back
relaying and //105.5 K288FX, translator of ``K-Love``, KYLV 88.9 OKC;
seems in a pledge drive rather than music. AM mode but distorted. NO
skip at all on 26, 27 or 28 MHz bands (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** SPAIN. 17855, Fri Apr 26 at 2200, token English from SNR is VG
direct into portables with clipons. Leading news item about whether
Sánchez will stay in power. 2209 feature is about some medication
that is hazardous especially to Brits (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 11785.009, Apr 26 at 2207, VOT not off the air, sufficient
S9+10/20 direct in English, 2211 ending news, bit of music, `Review of
the Turkish Press`; 2213 multi-lingual ID filler reel; 2215 music.
2231 I have switched to UTwente where measured, S9+45/55! 2233
`Turkish Folk Tales` about animals; 2239 music; 2243 promo TRT English
website, music; 2252 TRT World promo. 2254 s/off by badax for the 1230
only and 6 notes of IS before chopped off, no finesse. Something`s
always erroneous at Emirler (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** UKRAINE [non]. 17690, Apr 26 until 1956, the stirring Ukrainian
national anthem, immediately followed by Martí-Noticias ID; only S1/S5
direct from Grimesland, USA in very degraded propagation: K-index at
18 was five and a third; G1, R1 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2240 monitoring: confirmed Friday
April 26 at 2044 the 2030 on IRRS via AM Italia, 1322.996 kHz, S9+8
and no CCI but some ACI from strong Spanish from Spain on 1314.

Confirmed Friday April 26 at 2207 the 2200 on WRMI 9955, S9+10/20
direct vs lite jamming and yet poor copy, the first SWBC.

Not confirmed Friday April 26 at 2248 the 2230 on SW Radio, Germany,
3975.001, S8/S9 into UTwente, since 2239 is replaying. SWR listeners
shall have to wait until 1430 Saturday to hear #2240. Next:

** U S A. Pre- `AAAWWW` check of WBCQs, Apr 26 at 2337 into NH SDR:
3265 OFF. 5130.201 S7/S9 `ATATT`. 6159.930 S9/+15 TOMBS. 7489.935
S9+15/20 FKB. 9330.000 S9+15/20 too despite WLCR 10?X the power of
Classic WBCQ.

After 0000 UT Apr 27, `AAAWWW` sounds very familiar, yes, replay of
last week. Never mind. But this time only on 7490! 3265 is still off,
5130 still ``Radio *rump International on Radio Angela`` at 0015
instead of diverting to AAAWWW, 6160 some gospel huxter presumably
TOMBS (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Logs
** ALGERIA [and non]. Due to this report: ``Manuel Méndez, Lugo,
Spain, Log in Friol, NW of Spain, Sangean ATS 909X, Tecsun PL-880,
cable antenna, 8 meters: 17600, Ifrikia FM, Bechar, 0635-0646, 23-04,
English program, ID “Ifrikia FM”, news and comments about African
countries, “Radio Ifrikia FM”, “Ifrikia FM, The Voice of Africa”,
African song, at 0645 news and comments in French, African songs, at
0700 time signals, “Le Journal de la Information”, news in French.
35433. Also 0626-0650 , 24-04, African songs, at 0630 news in French,
more French comments, at 0634 English program, news, comments, songs,
at 0645 French, news, comments. 35433.``

I make a point of checking the next night after 0630 Apr 25 for what
could be a regular English segment. During that hour the other //
scheduled is 15160, which ought to propagate better across the
nightside.

In fact, 17600 is still incoming direct much better, S3/S6, but there
is no English, rather 0634 French, 0638 song, 0644 French and into
Arabic 0646. At first I thought much weaker 15160 was //, but then
clearly not, talk continuing while 17600 in music. 15160 never strong
enough to be certain of language, unable to recognize intonation as
English. At 0700, 17600 news in French.

MM was also rechecking this with somewhat different results: ``Manuel
Méndez, Lugo, Spain, Log in Lugo, Sangean ATS-909X: Ifrikya FM,
checked at 0528-0650, 25-04, on air on 9500 with program in Arabic
and French. Good signal.
At 0559 closed on 9500 and open on 17600 and 15160 with African songs
and program in French, at 0630 news in French and comments at 0638
African song. At 0638 transmission cut off abruptly on 15160 and
returns at 0642, no cut off on 17600, at 0645 news in French and
Arabic. No English segment today. Fair on 17600, good on 15160``

Was I getting something else on 15160? Yes! Aoki & EiBi show CRI
Mandarin via Jinhua 831 site until 0700. Without embargo, further chex
for Ifrikya in English are needed at this and any other time (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2240)

** TURKEY. Since the VOT English to us at 2200 on 11785 was missing
both April 23 & 24, I make a point of checking the 0300 UT April 25:
both frequencies are ON, into UTwente: 7275.017 thisaway S9+40 at 0257
with IS & English IDs. 6165.006 thataway is S9+10/20 again with
dittering on the upper side; autonotch gets rid of most of it. Not
really listening for content but noticed at 0335 the multi-lingual ID
filler reel is running (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2240)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2239 monitoring: ``From: Richard
Lemke, St. Albert, Alberta, Canada, the desk of Richard’s listening
Post, Radio: JRC NRD-535 HF, Antenna: random long wire in the trees.
Dear Glenn: Update, confirming WOR #2239, WRMI:

Georgia SDR off the back while Bonaire is busy; also on WRMI 9395,
S9+20/30 into same.

Also confirmed Thursday April 25 from 1630.8 on SW Radio, Germany,

soon recovers.

Logs
** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98 RC USB, Apr 24 at 2209, I can almost imagine a
JJBBA RC direct from LRA36. This is Wednesday but am checking now
since there was one report of it last Wed Apr 17 by Roberto Pavanello,
in the playdx iog which keeps running some years after the passing of
its founder Dario Monferini: ``[playdx2019] TIPS da Vercelli 15476USB
17/4 20.40 R. Nac. Arcangel S. Gabriel - Base Esperanca SS talk
suff`` -- I meant to check earlier when it might have been on again.
No current/recent info from station about its scheduling. It used to
have a Wed airing as well as Sat (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 15140 & 11760, Apr 24 at 1908, NO signals direct from RHC

``Shortages
Cuba: the old relationship between rationing and totalitarianism
At the root of rationing in Cuba is the system's productive incapacity
and its control over its people.
Dimas Castellanos, La Habana, 22 Abr 2024 - 21:22 CEST

On Monday, April 15, Cuba's Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a
message asking the faithful to pray for "mothers who are struggling to
feed their children," and stated that "our dear homeland is going
through very difficult times," recognizing that "Cubans are suffering,
crying, and lack the essentials."

The issue brings us back to the "supply" book, a government euphemism
for its rationing of basic groceries. Since only what is produced can
be distributed, since the implementation of rationing the quantity and
quality of the items regulated have been dwindling, and delivery times
have increased.

When rationing was first implemented, Cubans received beef, chicken,
oil, butter, condensed milk, toilet paper, coffee, rice, grain, and
industrial products, thanks to Soviet subsidies. Currently the monthly
distribution consists of seven pounds of rice (3.2 kilograms), four
pounds of sugar, half a liter of soybean oil, a pack of 115 grams of
"mixed coffee" (coffee with peas does not qualify as coffee, according
to the International Coffee Organization, when the mixture is more
than 5%; in Cuba it is 50%), five eggs, ten ounces of beans, and one
pound of chicken...``

effective today, ex-11825; 250 kW aimed 200 degrees for Indonesia
centred about Jakarta. Not clear what was the problem with 11825.
Listings showed no co-channel anywhere this hour; only possible
adjacent QRM would be 11830 CRI Spanish via East Turkistan, but which
should not be a problem in target.

11645 is the *only* scheduled BBC English channel this hour in its
ever-shrinking SW output. I believe some N Americans had been
listening to it, perhaps via longpath. I check it direct after 2306
and find it JBA S3/S4; 11825 vacant; 11830 presumed CRI JBA S4/S5.

9440 remains at 22-23 on same parameters. Checking it direct at 2213,
when it is also the *only* BBC channel, it`s JBA slightly offset + and
bothered by a carrier on 9441.00; have to tune LSB for any chance to
listen. Het might be jamming, tnx to the ChiCom where they have
allowed far too many megadenizens to understand English (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 17855, Wed Apr 24 at 2200, token triweekly English from
SNR, VG direct and almost as good backward on 15520, starts talking
about World Book Day, celebrated in Spain by public readings of Don
Quijote de la Mancha, not only in Castilian but translations. One
lasted 48 hours. Says Spanish is #2 language in world, 500
megaspeakers native plus 600M as second language. After news, 2210
Justin Coe voice with contact info including complicated postal
address. 2212 feature interviews curator of a photography exhibition
until 20 July by the Banco de España, about history of Spain, not just
the bank. Naturally, no visual element to this radio report (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 11785, Apr 24 at 2200, no signal direct from VOT English
for second night in a row; still nothing later in hour into UTwente,
nor a possible 9875 overrun. Something`s very erroneous at Emirler.
Need to check whether others be absent such as 0300 on 7275, 6165
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
