[IRCA] Best portable and Ultralight Radios for Domestic DXing?

--- Begin Message ---
Until someone comes up with a portable radio whose antenna pick-up pattern is cardioid instead of figure-of-8 (or switchable between those two choices), these radios are not a serious game player here in the New England states.

NYC is opposite to TA's we want to hear. The antenna HAS to handle that problem.

Spectrum storage - something typically not found in portables - is a DX power tool few of us up here would want to take off the table. That's as applicable to domestic DXing as foreign DX. Many of us operate successfully "in the field" with SDR's and suitably directional antenna systems to knock down the pests. Granite Pier, Tonset Rd., Quoddy Head, and Cappahayden are some sites you've likely read about.

But in many places the situation may be different. Certainly in recreational and business travel, as contrasted with DXpeditioning, portable receivers fill a niche and help to gather information that builds up the DX knowledge base.

Some of the better portables I've used include the Kaito KA-1103, Sangean PR-D5, Tecsun PL-380, CC Radio Skywave, and Sony ICF-2010.

Non-digital-readout ones worth a mention: Sony ICF-S5W, GE Superadio II, and several '60s and '70s Realistic TRF models.

I wonder if we could start a discussion thread on this topic. (I just did by changing the subject line)

What are the best portables you?ve used for domestic AM (medium wave) DXing? Please list both portable (meaning battery powered, any size) and ultralight (must fit in a pocket).
