Hello All,
Â
This morning was the final session of the Rockwork 4 DXpedition, and since I'll be hittingÂthe roadÂsoon, this report will be in two parts.ÂAustralian stations really hit the skids this morning, with Oz totally shut out on all frequencies (including 531, where they have dominated for 4 days). Kiwi propagation was not bad, however, so this was the cue to go after the weak Kiwis on the Oz big gun frequencies. The new 576-StarÂ(2.5 kW) had been heard at a weak level // 657 previously, but this morning it actually sounded pretty healthy for its 2.5 kW power (maybe we should call this a "dwarf Star?"). 585-Radio Ngati Porou is an underachieving Maori station which usually getsÂburied underÂthe Aussies 2WEB or 7RN, but this morning it had the frequency all to itself-- sounding almostÂas strong asÂits 2 kW power. 828-Trackside is another 2 kW Kiwi station which has a better reputation, and the lack of the 3GI Aussie left it in the clear (except for some 830 splatter).
Â
Unlike previous mornings I had the Rockwork 4 turnoff all to myself, with no RV's or other visitors.ÂApparently the Portland visitors congregate on these Highway 101 turnouts during the weekend, then clear out on Monday. It was tough to get used to all the space, especially after the Saturday morning extravaganza featuring three fanatical DXers and two "squatters."
Â
Anyway, this ocean cliff DXpedition really was a thrilling experience for all concerned, and I was surprised at the potent late June DU propagation. I'll beÂeager to hear Chuck and Tom's results after they go through their Perseus recordings-- and I'm sure thatÂthe MW-DXing community willÂhave someÂadditional evidence supporting cliff-boosted transoceanic propagation.
