Re: [IRCA] 1st NEW STN on 1400 Khz since 1982!!! WDNY Dansville, NEW YORK

Kaz,

I've done some limited but literal A/B (antenna switch) comparisons between the two receivers and could find very little difference in their performance in terms of pulling out a single weak station from the noise. But when you consider that the Elad allows you to record literally the entire AM band in I/O format for later review, and that's it's performance range extends up to 160 MHz, and that it costs less than the Perseus, I'd say that all equates to "outperforms".

I sold the Perseus recently, because it was sitting unused in the shack.

In terms of the ability to hear weak and marginal signals under the crowded band conditions and noise on today's AM band, both receivers leave rigs like the Drake R8B and 7030 in the dust. I mostly DX domestic stations on the AM band, and FM stations---though I have managed to log about 17 countries from Central Alabama on AM--so a lot of what I'm looking for involves being able to remove splatter from nearby stations that are super-srong.

Another situation that I encounter often is that I use a phaser to null a strong station on a given channel, and then need the receiver to still have the sensitivity to pull out the weaker station that is now audible underneath. The Elad really shines in that department.

With decent speakers and/or headphones, it's also very pleasant to listen to for hours at a time.

I admit that the learning curve can be a bit steep, and some of the software could be more user friendly...but overall, it's impossible for any box based receiver to come close to the performance of a good SDR overall.

The filtering on high end SDR's like this enables one to MUCH better DX adjacent to strong locals than with any non-SDR I've ever used.

Les, I am curious about your comment about the ELAD outperforming even the Perseus.

Have you or anyone else here done a direct comparison between the ELAD and the Perseus for Medium Wave AM BCB DX ONLY?

73 and thx .. KAZ

Welcome to the world of SDR DXing, and congratulations on the new GY
logging on 1400 KHz.

The Elad SDR outperforms every receiver that I've ever owned including
giants like the Drake R8B, AOR AR-7030+, Palstar R-30CC, etc. It's even
a better performer than the Perseus which I thought might be impossible.
You'll really enjoy it during an e-skip opening on FM, when you can
record nearly 6 MHz of bandwidth for later review.

I highly encourage you to download the latest Beta version of the
software, which includes a much improved scheduled recording feature.
It's pretty easy now to record the entire AM band and catch
TOH ID's overnight. I'm sure you'll log a lot of new ones in the weeks
to come.
