Re: [IRCA] 1017-Tonga Mystery

Hi George,

Thanks for your information on the resources available at the Tonga Broadcasting web site.

As for my recording of a presumed 1017-Tonga sign off at the Oregon cliff at 1203 UTC this morning, noted Finnish DXer Mauno Rittola has confirmed that 1017-Tonga has variable sign off times-- so that was the final piece of the puzzle in identifying the station. Bruce Portzer had recorded a sign off from 1017-Tonga at 1108 UTC on Tuesday morning, so I was wondering why the times didn't match up.

A 4-man contingent from the Yachats DXpedition group (Bill, Vlad, Victor and Mauno) just passed through Cannon Beach, OR, and we had a nice lunch together discussing DXpedition experiences. 1017-Tonga is apparently a prime DXing target in Finland, where Perseus-SDR DXers use monster beverages to chase South Pacific DX.

Website tonga-broadcasting.net/radio-tonga.html has program schedules & listen
live times. It appears it is possible to listen live (and record that), then DX
that program hours later (and record that), and then compare the two recordings.
It shows last program 7/24 started 11:15 am (I think they mean 1115 UTC?), for
7/26 live stream is 12 am to 5:30 am (assume UTC?), last program starts 10am. So
this does seem to suggest different sign-off times to me. I assume the dates are
UTC, but not sure. Tonga time is UTC +13 according to WRTH. 73, George S., MN

Thanks Guy,

Your help in listening to the 1017 recording is appreciated. It sure sounded
like Tonga to me, too (heard previously on a couple of DXpeditions), so unless
there are any objections from TP-DXers more experienced than me (which aren't
hard to find :-), that's how I'll log it!

I'm currently waiting for Bill, Mauno, Vlad and Victor to pass through Cannon
Beach on their way back from the Yachats DXpedition. Hopefully we can all go out
for coffee and a meal, and do our best to convince each other that despite
sacrificing sleep every night in a fanatical effort to chase weak transoceanic
AM signals (most of which can now be heard on the Internet), we are still
completely normal individuals.

73, Gary

Hi Gary,

Your nice recording sounds exactly like music from Tonga that I've heard on
1017 for many years. I'm sure Bruce and Chuck would agree. Tonga must have
been on an extended schedule.

As the old DXers' saying goes, "who else could it be?"
