W4HM DISCUSSION OF DAILY SOLAR SPACE AND GEOMAGNETIC WEATHER-
For Wednesday February 20, 2013
Solar activity is low as far as the emergence of the number of new sunspot
groups. Currently there is 1 new un-numbered sunspot group and 6 existing
numbered sunspot groups.
Solar activity is high as far as the number of solar flares, 11 occurred.
The largest solar flare in magnitude was a small in size C8.2, which
occurred at approximately N08W46 and associated with sunspot group #11678.
#11678 has a delta twisted magnetic signature capable of producing large M
class solar flares.
The daily solar flux index (SFI) has been at or above 100 for 21 consecutive
days, currently at 114.9.
The daily sunspot number (SSN) has been at or above 100 for 2 consecutive
days, currently (NOAA) at 106. Unfortunately though it appears that the
daily SSN may drop below 100 again in the next day or two.
With the daily SSN above 100 that means that there will be some east-west F2
layer radio wave propagation openings in the northern hemisphere. On
Wednesday February 20, 2013 from Florida on 10 meters I made 10 east-west F2
layer contacts on the digital mode JT9-1 into Europe and central and east
Asia with only 5 watts.
The geomagnetic field was quiet for 2 consecutive days with the Kp
(planetary) index in the 0-2 range. As collected by Potsdam Germany WDC the
3 hour Kp (planetary) intervals were 11222211. As collected by NOAA/SWPC the
3 hour Kp (planetary) intervals were 11122221.
The Dst ranged between -1 and -23.
Via SOHO the maximum and minimum solar wind values were 338-420.
Via NOAA the maximum background x-ray solar flux value was B3.2.
