Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] Apollo 13

IRCA,

Several NASA installations broadcast the audio from manned space flights from their facilities, on a frequency that most scanners could hear. And others, like NASA Ames in the San Francisco Bay Area used to send it to a one of the local Ham Radio repeaters.

I drove down to Edward AFB to watch STS-4 land and took a scanner with me. The Air Force was rebroadcasting both sides of the conversations with the shuttle on a couple of different frequencies.

I guess what I am trying to say is that I can think of a couple of ways she could have been hearing the audio. Now whether or not that really happened, or was it put in the movie for added drama? I don't know.

I see the shape of the speaker now. However, the questions still remains, where's the radio? How did Marilyn Lovell have access to the communications between the crew and the ground? Oh...and they moved the speaker to several places during the movie. Kinda' bugs me and I hope someone has an answer.

I was talking to someone just the other day about that very scene in the movie. The speaker you see is actually the external speaker for the old Radio Shack/Realistic DX-160. I had one, so I recognized it immediately. All they did was stick a NASA sticker on the front of it! Another Hollywood blunder.

Here's a question for those of you who are a lot smarter than I am...I'm watching Apollo 13 during the commercial breaks tonight while the ALA - LSU game is on. They show a couple of scenes in the movie where Jim Lovell's wife is listening to the transmissions from the spacecraft. It's a grey speaker, with a NASA logo on it, but it never appears to be attached to a radio. Anybody know anything about this? Did the families have access to the communications? It puzzles me every time I see it.
