It would have been helpful if I had made note of the language. I do not think it was Thai. Penang and Phuket are 1460 and 1315 miles from Xuanwei, Yunnan. which is listed as 600kw. If it were directional south, it would be a remote possibility 3 hours before sunset.

Yep. The flight path to the runway was low, over dense population with mountains on either side. It was spooky at best.
