[IRCA] Drake R8 service update

I got a call this morning about the R8. There is more wrong with it than
they usually see, but it can be repaired. The 28-pin diodes in the front
end, over half of them are leaky, so they are going to replace all of
them. There also are some caps in the power supply that are getting bad
too, plus the numerical push pad is worn out, which I know that as the
receiver had to be warmed up to get several of the numbers to work. I
mentioned before, the R8 has been used thousands of hours and would run
for hour after hour, morning after morning in the 90s for years. So no
wonder I wore it out. hi. It had been my DX worhorse for 19 years. The
cost without shipping is about $300, so I went ahead and told them to
fix it. Spendy, but I have little choice. A used one may or may not be
as good, or down the road it could go bad and I would have to have Drake
fix it then, if they still are repairing the R8 series. They generally
continue to repair a unit until the major parts are no longer available
the tech told me. They should have it done by next week and will ship it
out. so I should get it back by the end of the month I would guess. It
took a week to get there. It will be nice to have it back.
