Hello All,
Favorable Asian propagation continued for a second day here, although
a somewhat different set of TP stations provided the excitement. 738-BEL2
(Taiwan Fisheries) had its best signal of the Fall Season, as did 1575-VOA
Thailand. A generous sunrise enhancement boosted several second-tier Asians
up to vibrant levels, and most of the "big gun" TP's were still going
strong well past 1500. Koreans seemed to do especially well today, as opposed
to the Japanese (favored yesterday) and Chinese (favored the day before).
Unlike yesterday, the band seemed relatively sedate around 1300, but
livened up fairly quickly. 738 kHz had an unusually clean-sounding Asian
carrier fade in around 1412 ( as opposed to BEL2's raspy, NK-like signal),
which turned out to be a rare solo appearance from a presumed HLKG. Shortly
thereafter BEL2 replaced the Korean with a huge Chinese pop music signal at
1422-- easily Taiwan's strongest audio for over a year. The unusually
strong 738-Taiwan signal stuck around for about 10 minutes, providing a chance
to record an ominous pulsating noise in the transmitted signal (more
later). As noted previously by both Nick and Tom, 1575-VOA had a strong signal
around the 1500 TOH, but here the long-range TP managed its best audio of the
season (although only the "barefoot" 7.5" loopstick Ultralight was used
for the reception). The Thailand mega-station blasted in on the modified ULR
alone shortly before 1500, complete with a "Voice of America" ID at the
TOH. Even though it's far from rare DX, it was one of the more exciting
moments in a pretty enjoyable session.
The following were heard on a C.Crane SWP Slider model (7.5"
loopstick), inductively coupled to a 9' sided PVC tuned passive loop (in the back
yard). A modified ICF-2010 (30" loopstick) was used as an SSB spotting
receiver:

For those Ultralight radio DXers (and any others) who need to hear
their first Taiwan station, 738-BEL2's sick-sounding transmitter gets out
quite well. The carrier sounds like something out of North Korea, and during
strong Chinese speech reception there is a menacing buzzing noise that is
clearly audible, such as in this strong recording at 1433 this morning:
