Re: [IRCA] South Pacific DXing for 17Nov09

Hi Walt - Some interesting logs. See below for a couple of comments

Listened again last night after an absolutely gorgeous sunset. Didn’t catch the “green flash” that’s sometimes visible in equatorial areas the moment the sun’s disk drops below the horizon (we saw that the previous night), but it was more than made up for with the glorious cloud pattern. After cool and drizzly weather the night before as we left New Zealand, last night was very comfortable and dry. Unfortunately, there appeared to be more static. I concentrated on 10 kHz channels, hoping for North America and did hear a number. Overall, I didn’t think conditions were as good as the previous night, though. I also jumped around a bit. Mostly, I started at 1700 this time and worked down.

801: Not heard the previous night, but this is Rhema from Nelson with 1.6 kW. ID noted for Rhema around 07:15. After Insight for living, noted ads for Hastings and Christchurch, and Affordable Taxation Services in Auckland.

1580: Probably the most fascinating frequency of the evening. Mostly dominated by Radio Disney (which should be KMIK, Tempe AZ with 50 kW) at good level at 07:38. Later faded to be replaced with a SS station at good level with phone # mentioned at 08:04. Again Radio Disney ID at 08:58. Best heard aiming pretty much N/S. Not sure how to explain that!

1540: Initially I thought that I was hearing French here. Mostly EZL music and talk by OM. I’ll need to recheck the mp3 file for this one!

1500: KUMU, Honolulu with 10 kW with ads for Hawaiian Telecom and a condo development. Good level early in the evening.

1150: Interesting station as they had a call-in show with a toll-free number at 07:55. At that moment, the announcer said: “You’re NOT the rest of the world”, and then silence. The signal disappeared. Sure like to know who they were. Did not return while I waited for a couple of minutes.

1020: Spanish station at fair to good level at 08:07 with 2 men talking, mentioning “economica”.
KTNQ is Spanish and sends about 90% of its power out into the Pacific, so probably them.

580: Another very interesting channel. I could hear around 08:16 2 men with conversation of a religious nature. Could this be Petersburg, AK, or KJAL, Tafuna? Help needed here!

The last I heard, KJAL was off the air and its tower was in rather poor shape. That was just before the Tsunami struck. But please check further on this freq if you get near Samoa - the station may have risen from the dead. On the other hand, the tower might be now at the bottom of the bay. While you're at it, try checking for American Samoans on 630 648 720 and 900 to see if any of them are on the air at the moment.

Bruce
