Re: [IRCA] longwires--elevated or not?

Hi Derek,
My longwires are elevated in the traditional fashion; generally 10-15 feet off the ground, using the standard 3:1 turns ratio matching transformer, with isolated coax from the longwire. www.dxing.info has several very good articles on matching transformers and related antenna info. I use Home Depot 500 foot spools of THHN stranded #14 wire, splicing the ends as needed to get 1600 feet for the E/W wire. And since dead trees usually break the wire several times a year, there are probably 10 or more splices in the current antenna. Any gauge wire will work since there is no current flow in the antenna, but wire strength is a big factor for permanent installations. I used #14 as a compromise between the stronger but more expensive #12, and a narrower gauge that would break easier. I use poles over exisiting fences where there are no trees for supports, and use trees the rest of the run. IRCA list member Neil Kazaross in Illinois is an expert on using terminated wire antennas lying on the ground (BOGs--Beverage on Ground)--he's developed fairly close-spaced parallel-wire BOGs with one wire somewhat shorter than the other. He'd be the one to ask if you were interested in such antennas. Generally, BOGs are more directional and have weaker output than a traditional elevated longwire or Beverage antenna.

Steve

Is your wire elevated or is it on the ground??? Is your 1600 all one wire or is it pieces put together???

Thank you.....
