[IRCA] ULR Definitions Committee Review of Tecsun PL-450 Portable
Hello All,
The Tecsun PL-450 is an AM-LW-FM-SW double-conversion portable which
was recently introduced for sale on eBay, as well as on Amazon.com, for a price
of around $90. The radio has excellent medium-wave reception, primarily
because of its 4" x .4" two-coil fixed (non-alignable) loopstick, which also is
used as the LW antenna. Dual selectable filters are also used, although this
feature is quite useless on medium wave, as is the double-conversion
capability (which allows images of local stations to blare away, 910 kHz lower than
the fundamental frequencies).
Based on initial information from China, the Ultralight Definitions
Committee approved the PL-450 as a recognized Ultralight radio in November.
Since then, after an actual model was ordered and received for the 2009
Ultralight Radio Shootout review, it was discovered that the model's volume actually
exceeds the 20 cubic inch limit for Ultralight radio qualification. As
such, after a brief review by the Committee, the PL-450 has been dropped from the
list of recognized Ultralight radios.
Despite this, the PL-450 would be a very sensible purchase for
medium-wave DXers looking for a sensitive and selective portable, which also performs
quite capably on FM and SW. With the same basic circuitry as the Sony
ICF-SW7600GR, it provides very similar performance at a much lower cost. I have
posted a brief review of the PL-450 on Amazon's web site, and if there is
sufficient interest in the model, a full review may be written at a later date
for the AM-DX clubs.
