[IRCA] "Slider SWP" Generally Superior to Slider E100 Models

Hello Guys,

In a rather poorly-kept secret, three C.Crane SWP ultralight radio
units recently were fully modified by Steve Ratzlaff (Murata IF filters) and
myself (Slider loopsticks) to create a modified ultralight radio with
unprecedented weak-signal DX capability. In comparison to the fully modified E100
models, the Slider SWP's not only have slightly superior sensitivity, but
significantly easier Slider coil tuning.

Balanced against these benefits are the somewhat inconvenient SWP
pushbutton volume controls, and a chassis which was not engineered for easy
disassembly (unlike the E100). The Slider modification in particular is a fairly
serious test of a technician's patience, with the two leads from the single
loopstick coil routed to an awkward, tight location on the back of the RF
board. This contrasts with the supremely simple Slider modification to the E100,
which can be done with no prior experience.

Owners of the fully-modified E100 models already possess most of the
DXing capability available on the SWP Sliders, and there is no reason to feel
that the SWP provides a huge leap in capability. DXers who have heard both
models in comparison (Guy Atkins and Kevin Schanilec) agree with me that the
SWP model simply has slightly better weak-signal capability, and somewhat
easier Slider-coil tuning. Both should be excellent for travel portables or basic
DXpedition receivers, however.

Because of a serious backlog in pending ULR articles (including the
2009 Shootout), there hasn't been time yet to write a full report on the C.Crane
SWP "full transformation" modifications, giving instructions and part
sources. This is planned to be completed and posted soon, however.

The C.Crane SWP is one of the models which will be fully covered in the
upcoming 2009 Ultralight Radio Shootout review, along with the Degen DE1123,
Kaito KA11, Degen DE1105, and Tecsun DR-910.
