Re: [IRCA] KDAC 1230 is alive and well

Between the FCC web site and a wavelength conversion spreadsheet I have the tower is 400.32 feet tall. The wavelength conversion spreadsheet is fun if towers interest you. If anyone would like to have it write me directly.

Being a bachelor for a long weekend, I hit the road today to see if I could get any definition on my problem with my closest un-heard, KDAC 1230 in Fort Bragg, CA. Being that they were on the way, I also made stops at KUKI 1400 Ukiah, KLLK 1250 Willits and KPMO 1300 Mendocino. KUKI is an un-interesting installation in an un-interesting town (a van parked out in front of the studio still had "Country KUKI" markings - they've been SS how long?). The KLLK site is three unlit and unpainted towers (I didn't realize that was legal) slightly east of town. No studio. KPMO is in the hills NE of the town of Mendocino with a single tower. It may have been a studio at one time, but it is unmanned and the building and site are rather seedy. As Patrick has mentioned, the KDAC building is a Classic Radio Station. Not a KFI or WLW classic, but proportionally so for a small town graveyarder. The site is not staffed. The tower was the tallest I've ever seen for a GY station. Some time in the recent past, there was a discussion here about tower height and how it relates to groundwave and skywave, but I can't locate it. Based on what I saw today, I'm wondering if the taller sticks don't indeed favor groundwave (I should know better, but it escapes me)? Google Earth and my own "perceptions" aside, there was no immediate horizon blockage. As I drove south, it didn't take long for KDAC's signal to tank. BTW, Fort Bragg is a neat coastal town. I'll be back. I have pictures of all four stations. If anyone is interested, let me know.
