     Greetings from Puyallup, Washington (home for  Guy Atkins and me, and a 
modest TP-DXing location about 5 miles from  salt-water Puget Sound).  We take 
great pleasure in welcoming  you, John, Gary and any other South African 
DXers to our worldwide  Ultralight radio enthusiast group, and are especially 
thrilled at your superb TA  loggings from Canada and the USA on your Murata-filter 
modified Eton E100 (no  doubt the first of many, which will probably eclipse 
the DXing records that our  Grayland, WA group has assembled).
 
     In November of 2007, I was astonished to  receive three TP's on a $17 
Sony SRF-59 Walkman that I had purchased for my  8-year old son, in a dubious 
attempt to interest him in MW DXing.  The  attempt was a total bust, but the $17 
was anything but wasted, as that humble  SRF-59 became the inspiration to 
kick off the worldwide boom in medium-wave  Ultralight radio DXing.  When 
co-conspirators like John Bryant and Rob  Ross joined the cause, the wildly booming 
niche hobby suddenly became well  organized, and quickly grew into the 150+ 
members of the Yahoo ultralightdx  group (with the outstanding DXer.Ca web site 
as a home base).
 
     We hope that you and the other SA DXers will avail  yourself of the 
extensive resources published in the Ultralight Radio  File area of DXer.Ca, and 
also take advantage of the superb Ultralight Awards  Program, administered by 
John and Rob.  We are very honored to have you all  in our booming group, and 
will be eager to hear more of your amazing  DX loggings!

Vince Stevens here from Cape Town, South Africa.  I've just joined this 
group thanks to some gentle prodding from John  Plimmer..

But the real credit for getting me up and running with an  Ultralight 
Radio has to be collectively given to John Bryant, Guy Atkins  & Gary 
DeBock who generously combined forces and provided the 4 of us  South 
Africans with some of the little radios to play with. None of these  
radios are available in SA as far as I know and the costs of importing  
them would have been too high, so we'd all been stalling on purchasing  
them the normal way, bearing in mind that we all have decent table top  
comms rxers anyway.. But thanks to the above gentlemen I now have an  
Eton E100 and a little Sony SRF49, which ultimately will probably do the  
rounds and be shared amongst all of us here in the Cape..

Best I  introduce myself at this point. I'm 42 years old and have been 
DXing for  28 years. I started off on a domestic valve set then moved to 
an FRG-7  (when the DX bug really bit), then an Icom R-70 in 1984 (which 
I still  own), then a Drake R8A in 2003.. I also own a Collins R-389 (the  
antithesis of an Ultralight!!antithesis of an Ultralight!!<WBR>, with tw
valves if I remember correctly - a wonderful beast) and an AR88D. I now  
live on a farm 30KM east of Cape Town and have enough space to run some  
shortish beverages. Presently I have one of 130m running North-South. I  
also use a ALA1530 and a 50m longwire running NW-SE. I focus almost  
exclusively on MW and do try for QSL's when something good comes in. The  
best DX is not heard at home however, so trips to the coast are quite  
regular..which leads me nicely into some loggings, heard at Noordhoek a  
few mornings ago:

Ultralight loggings: Noordhoek Village, 20 KM  south of Cape Town on the 
Atlantic coast, about a kilometre form the  beach. Listening from my Land 
Rover 4x4. Gary Deacon also in attendance  with his ultralight..

930 USA WBEN Buffalo 04h05, nx, wx & ID,  poor-fair (5KW - personal first)
1300 USA WJFK 03h13, ID & website  info, poor
1660 USA WWRU (presumed) 03h24 in Korean, poor

Many other  UNID's also heard including some potential 5 kilowatters plus 
some  non-regulars

720 WGN (normally hear Brazil here)?, 870 WWL?, 680 one of  
WPTF/WRKO/CJOB ?, 1370/1420/1680 - all USA no idea which stations  tho'..

12 Jan was a very good morning for USA reception, probably one  of the 
best I have experienced. Noordhoek in mid-summer has been good to  us in 
the past, its just a darn struggle to get up at 4AM in order to beat  the 
sunrise which happens at around 0530 ;-)...and I did switch over to  the 
Drake at one point because the DX was flying in and I can't yet record  
from the Eton...

so that's hopefully the first of many reports from  me...
