[IRCA] Queen Charlotte Islands DXpediton: Part II

Part II: Rumblings of disturbed conditions 31 December 2008 Masset, BC.

I noticed the K index starting to rise this morning, with it being 4 at 12:00 UTC. The SF remained low at 69 and A index at 0. From previous experiences, I recalled that disturbed conditions from our end preceded any changes in the A/K indices, and I suspect today was no different. This morning I listened starting at 13:55 UTC. The Russian LW stations were present at very good levels. I noted that 279 was not in parallel to the other LW stations with it having a National Anthem at 15:00 at 9.5 level. Also heard were: 153, 180 both at 8, 189 at 6.5, and 234 at 7.5.
Now onto the MW observations. Today I?ll comment on the stronger stations, or those of interest:

531: NHK1 at 14:07 at 9 level.
549: Russia at 14:09 at 8.
558: KBS2 at 14:12 at 7 // to 603.
567: NHK1 at 7
576: Russian at 9 level at 14:15
594: JOAK with New Year?s programming at 14:16 at 9 level.
603, 612, 621: all 7 level
648: Russia with Korean at 9 level
657: North Korea at 7 level, but both 657 and 639 (and 684) spoiled by IBOC hash.
666: 2 cochannel: Chinese and NHK1 around 14:27.
675: 7 level
693: NHK2 and another cochannel at 14:31 at 9 level.
711: KBS1 at 7 level.
720: Interesting channel. Russian with new year?s greetings, not Radio Rossii. It appeared to be a local Kamchatka program, although not // to SW Kamchatka frequencies such as 6075. Also over N. Korea which is on the lower side. Then CNR2 faded up past 14:59 dominating (or eliminating the Russian) and at 15:00 IDd as ?China Business Radio? in English.
729: NHK1 and Cochannel Chinese at 14:38 at 9 level.
738: Chinese (Taiwan Fisheries stations) cochannel with KBS1 at 14:44.
774: NHK2 and weak cochannel at 14:49 at 9+ level.
819: Probably North Korea with weak modulation at 14:53.
828: NHK2 and cochannel at 14:57 at as close to a perfect 10 as possible.
837: Chinese not CNR1 at 15:08 at 9 level.
918: Shandong with echos at 7 level at 15:15.
945: CNR1 and cochannel at 15:16 at 7 level.
954: JOKR at 7 level.
972: Korean at 9 level at 15:22, and still a 9 at 18:27 (when it was // to 1134, an 8).
981: CNR1 at 8 level.
1026: 8 level with instrumental music ?Chinese?, at 15:25. ?Beijing?.
1035: CNR1 and echo at 7 level.
1053: CJMB Manitoba early, later JOAR and cochannel.
1071: Chinese at 15:36 at 9 level.
1089: JOHB with NHK2 sign-off at 15:42 which is earlier than the 16:00 scheduled. 8 level.
1188: Christian sounding music from FEBC at 18:53 at 8 level.
1503: NHK1 at 7 level at 18:14.
1548: 4QD at 18:03 at 7 level.
1557: WYFR at 15:59 at 7 level.
1566: Russian at 9 level from HLAZ. Heard throughout the morning at very good levels.
1575: VOA Thailand at 16:00 at 9 level. Later, I?m sure I heard Russian at 17:55?not sure who this would be.
1611: weak audio at 16:01?so some Australian propagation this morning.
1701.06: Radio Brisvaani at 7 level.

Overall, I wouldn?t call this morning a very strong one. There were hints of northern signals weakening and some openings weakly to the south. Tomorrow?s another day!
