I have an 'original' NRC 4' loop which was designed and built by the lat Gordon Nelson, which I purchased from him in 1969. This design is 4' on the diagonal. 

DX'ers have varied that design anywhere from my ( 1969-70 ) 2' loop design ( also in the NRC Antenna Manual ) to various other sizes up to 5 or 6'. These changes were part experimentation, and part born of necessity in that the original loop does consume a fair amount of space.
