Congratulations Colin,
 
     It's always helpful have a ham license, even if  you don't plan to make 
any 2-way contacts.  You can learn a lot of antenna  theory and propagation 
concepts from ham radio, some of which apply directly to  AM-DXing. There are 
also opportunities to practice foreign languages, and make  friends worldwide 
(all of which I've enjoyed).
 
     Medium-wave DXing (especially Ultralight DXing) is  a different kind of 
thrill, however.  Although I've had the highest U.S.  ham license since 1982, 
the recent Ultralight Radio boom and related technical  experimentation have 
been fascinating indeed, making many hams completely  content to stay on the AM 
band.
