[IRCA] Antenna work

I've done some antenna work lately.  First project was to install a large
ferrite loopstick to the inside roof of my Blazer.  That has a fiberglass
cover over the short pickup bed in the back.  The ferrite rod is mounted on
a pivot and then to a mount so it's a few inches from the inside of the roof
and out of the way.  I was sitting about 100 feet from the #1 tower at
WDDZ-550 tonight.  It was on 500w night pattern.  Turned the rod to null the
550 signal.  I could hear both 540 and 560 with perfectly listenable
signals.

Second antenna project was a vertical.  I had a 7 foot length of 2" PVC
pipe.  I got two 35' lengths of #14 THHN wire.  I made two windings from the
center to each end.  I used a 450 to 50 ohm transformer I had kicking
around.  Probably took ten minutes to make.  I set it in the outside corner
of the radio room.  By moving it I could significantly reduce signals from a
number of locals.  I also found that putting it horizontal actually was
useful.  Right now it's sitting on top of the curtains on two adjacent
windows in the front of the house.  Heard what sounded like CFOS-560.  Also
could drop WBZ-1030 far enough down so their IBOC wasn't an issue at all.  I
will experiment some more with this until my wife gets cranky about having
that PVC pipe above the curtains.  (g)
