Re: [IRCA] IRCA Digest, Vol 54, Issue 41

Karl - thanks for your advice. I know you've been at this for a long time. I've seen your name numerous times over the last 25 years. I have a number of radios that will receive LW. They are:

Sony ICF-2010 and ICF-SW7600GR
Kaito KA1103
Radio Shack DX-398 (Sangean ATS-909)
Sangean ATS-808

My guess is that the Sony 2010 would be my best bet. I never cease to be amazed at how well it performs. It must have really been ahead of its time when it first came out in 1985. I bought mine used in 1990.

Unfortunately I have nowhere to put any kind of external antenna. For SW I tried dropping a wire down from my 3rd floor patio but the noise actually got worse!

I'll check out Long Wave Club of America web site. I've looked at it before, but not for a long time.

Hey Dennis:

Long Wave is everything medium wave is just more so.

The most important feature about long wave is nulling out noise, but signal strength is a challenge too. You would like to get both. If you have the real estate try to phase long wires. Make sure you have a huge ground system. The more radials the better. This band is driven by ground wave. Don't forget to capture it. Using just a ferrite loop might be OK, but you'll need quite a lot of taps or capacitive tricks to make it tune the entire band well. My best advice is to head for a quiet park, find a place where there is a good ground (like a water fountain) and work from there. All the electrical noise in an apartment will make your LW catches difficult if not impossible. Check out the Long Wave Club of America. They have great reads about this region and they are a great bunch of guys. www.lwca.org.

What are you using as a receiver?
