Re: [IRCA] TP for 30 Aug from Victoria, BC ...notes from Masset, BC

Well things were very different up here, although difficult to assess due to our power failure.  Here's my report:

TP report for 30
 August 2008 from Masset, B.C.

Good morning!
Monitored between 12:33 and 14:15 and during most of that time (until the
last 20 minutes) there was a power failure, so all I had to use was the laptop
with the SDR-IQ as my 12v DX setup was outside.
Oh well.  Sure makes me thankful
for the Perseus SDR which is far more user-friendly than the IQ.  A good Asia opening
but with a rapid fall off at about 14:00.  Plenty of CC stations, KK, JJ and some
Russians.  A few of the highlights:

540:  CC with echo ++
at 13:22

576:  Strong RR at 13:24.

594:  JOAK didn’t seem
very strong today.

657:  North
  Korea

711:  South Korean
very strong today with good modulation.

801:  Might have heard
KTWG weakly for first time this season late

810:  Russian dominated
here today both early and late.

819:  Early mostly
jamming, but on recheck 14:02 very
strong KCBS.

963:  Very strong CRI
in Russian.

1089:  Nice audio from
NHK2 JOHB

1251:  VOR in CC
strong with many cochannels.

1422:  English program
from JORF, with ID  “This is JORF” and
into a big band 40s program at 13:02
at 9 level.

1475:  Malaysia
back today at 7 level at 12:56

1557:  WYFR Taiwan
there early at 12:45 at 8 level.

1566:  HLAZ with no
sign of cochannel this morning, at least early.

X-band:  Minimal signals
today.  No DU stations heard this
morning.

Now for the more interesting details, and that is, the TAs
last night.  Best so far by far and I
actually could follow program details from TWR Benin on 1566!  I heard lots of audio between 04:15 and 05:40
UTC, with virtually all the audios from the Iberian
peninsula, and mostly Spanish stations.  A list of TAs heard (hets unless noted)
follows.  Note the big cluster of audios
in the mid band!

531, 666, 684, 693, 711.05 (improved to 5 level at 05:30),
738, 747, 783, 801, 819, 837 (a six later at 05;28 presumed COPE), 855 (a 6),
864, 873 (a 6 at 05:27 presumably SER), 909, 918, 936, 945, 954, 963, 972, 981,
999 (very strong at 7 to 8 COPE), 1008 (8 to 8.5 at 05:25), 1017, 1026 (6 at
05:24 SER), 1035 (7), 1044 (7), 1053, 1071, 1089 (6), 1098 (5 to 6),  1107:  2
stations here including R. Nac. Espana and someone off frequency on
1107.08  ?who??, 1116 (9 level at 05:22
with SS talk SER), 1125 (Radio Nac Espana at 7 level), 1134, 1143, 1152 (6),
1179, 1206, 1215 (8 level with Spanish at 05:20), 1224 (6 COPE), 1251, 1268
(6), 1287, 1296, 1305 (6 at 05:16), 1314 (6), 1341, 1359 (6 at 05:15), 1368,
1377, 1404, 1413 (6.5 at 05:15 Spain), 1422, 1431, 1458, 1485 (6 at 05:14),
1494, 1503, 1521, 1539, 1548, 1557, 1566:
Finally!  Readable audio from Benin,
but no definite ID.  Just American style
preaching in English from 04:37
tune-in.  Levels would go up and
down.  For example, heard “Spend the rest
of our lives blaming God” at 04:54
at 8 level, then faded down a bit, but up again at 04:57:30.
Remained strong until 30 seconds before 05:00
then faded down a bit.  No obvious time
pips or IS at 05:00,but instead a
hymn and then further preaching.  Lots of
“Hallelujah”s.  Gone by 05:40.
I’m very pleased with this catch!
1575 (6), 1584, 1602 (6).

A comment on antennae.
Whereas the Wellbrook phased array works well for TPs, it’s the worst
performer for the TAs in seems.  The
North mini-Beverage and the ALA 100 perform the best for the TAs.

That’s it for the morning!
Good DX to all….Walt Salmaniw, Haida Gwaii, B.C.

PS:  During the power
failure I briefly pulled out the Eton E100 and quickly found the 3 strong NHK2
stations audible at fair to good levels…on 747, 774 and 828.  This with just the internal antenna at the
window (I have a metal roof here).
