Re: [IRCA] KKFO app's

Mike,

Back in the very early fifties when I started listening it wasn't that hard to get graveyarders coast to coast and all spots in between from my rural locale in N.W. Iowa. Running 24/7 was just getting started by a few risk takers and 24/6 was a bit more common with most of those stations taking sunday night/monday morning off. Sometimes the dial would almost be wide open. These are just a few of the GYs that I heard on regular programming running 24/6 or 24/7: 1230-WNOR-Norfolk VA, WJBW-New Orleans, WITH-Baltimore MD, WCPO-Cincinnati OH,

1240-WEDC-Chicago IL, WBBW-Youngstown OH, WKDA-Nashville TN,

1340-KMYR-Denver CO, WOOK-Washington D.C., WBGE-Atlanta GA, WEXL-Royal Oak MI, KORK-Las Vegas NV, WHHM-Memphis TN, WKGN-Knoxville TN, KSET-El Paso TX, WEMP-Milwaukee WI,

1400-WGRC-Louisville KY, WJLB-Detroit MI, WMIN-St. Paul MN, KENO-Las Vegas NV, WOND-Pleasantville NJ, KONO-San Antonio TX, WLOW-Portsmouth VA, KRKO-Everett WA,

1450-KSAN San Francisco CA, WILM-Wilmington DE, WWPB-Miami FL, WNOE & WTIX-New Orleans LA,
WHLS-Port Huron MI,

1490-KWIK-Burbank CA, WTMV-East St. Louis IL, WOPA-Oak Park IL, WJBK-Detroit MI, WSRS-Cleveland Heights OH, CMOX-Havana Cuba...

I spent a lot of time dxing 1950-1953 and logged well over 1800 stations during that time including 85 on 1230, 79 on 1240, 106 on 1340, 107 on 1400, 118 on 1450 & 95 on 1490. These were the days of many many frequency checks and the dial was loaded with equipment tests from brand new stations taking the air (in droves). Sunrise dx was super as almost all the stations used either the SSB or Dixie to open up with and sunset dx from Iowa could last for 3-4 hours.

Things have changed a wee bit now days.

WOW. They went on the air in 1947, on 1490 -- and like all class IV AM stations -- 250 watts was maximum power -- day + nifgt. They used a short 150' tower in Magnolia Park --- a city owned park. I'm impressed. _______________________________________________
