Gotcha, Marc.  You did a great job of answering my question even though
I didn't 'splain it very well.  So, it just depends on where the donut /
oval is as to what you will or won't hear.  Makes sense!!!  The donut
was at least 200 miles North of me, lat night.  If it were further
South, then I might have heard different stuff.

Sorry, I'm not sure I understand your question.  However, increased
solar activity will cause the Auroral oval to move (or expand) from its
normal location over the North Pole further to the south.  If the
southern edge of the oval reaches your location, you will experience the
type of conditions that you have described, i.e. weakened signals from
the north, west, and east, and enhanced signals from the south,
southwest, and southeast.
