Re: [IRCA] Survey of Participants in the Recent Ultralight DX Sprint

Hey Gary;

Thanks for the reply. Yes, John and Gil have worked EXTREMELY hard on
the DX ULR Sprint Contest and my hat is off to them (and all the
contestants). As for the logs, I was thinking more along the lines of a
quick, "down and dirty" cut and paste. In fact, after my incessant
ramblings below, I have "cut and pasted" my logbook from the ULR sprint.
If anything, this would be for other DX'ers to look at what I have heard
as potential DX targets. Curtis Sadowski, just 100 miles away has heard
stuff that he considers "run of the mill" that I have never heard (DX)
so I check out what he reports and think that he does likewise. Gary,
they asked for suggestions about the Sprint and I obliged. :)

As for the cassette units. My wife has been sick and missed months of
work. Long story short and I don't want to drone on about my financial
situation but I not only watch every dime, I watch every penny. So when
at Goodwill I saw a Sony cassette walkman unit that resembled a
SRF-M37V for $2.99, I bought it. I still felt bad about spending $ on
buying it. I think that it has mucho selectivity issues, which seems
similar to the 37 but it hears some good DX. Curtis did try to "gift"
me a used SRF-59 but I paid him for what it he paid for it and shipping
and it is an amazing receiver as is and even better when "peaked." My
point is that the cassette units are as widely available as radio-only
units and I think that they are great fun to use, also. My suggestion
is, if you are trolling a Goodwill or a yard sale and see a Sony tape
model, buy it - I think that you'll like it. I would even offer one of
my tape Walkman units as a test bed, if need be.

About the detailed reports and shootouts on the ULR craze - yes man, I
have read every article, post or blog on ULR's and most at least two or
three times. I want to personally thank you (and everyone else) for
contributing to this movement. It has motivated me to DX more, even
though I'm using standard and non-standard ULR's.

To David Hascall,

Thank you for your comments. I am sure that all of us would enjoy

detailed log information from the Sprint Contest, but we must remember
that John
and Gil have already invested an enormous amount of volunteer time and
effort
to organize and administer the Contest, and be sensitive to this fact,
before suggesting additional workload on their part.

Also, concerning your view that your cassette combo unit would
have
been one of the "receivers of choice" had it been discovered back in
November,
may I suggest that you take the opportunity to read the detailed 2007
and 2008
Shootout reviews on dxer.ca, which were both drafted after significant
time
and expense for purchasing, testing, reviewing and grading all
Ultralight
radios suggested by enthusiasts at the time. The current "receivers of
choice"
are those that have proven successful in actual Ultralight DXing during
the
past four months-- not the ones that were "discovered" in November.
The
"Shoutout" results have guided most purchasers in making wise
decisions, and I
hope you will also take advantage of the detailed reports in making
your own
choices.

Thank you again for your comments.

          73, Gary DeBock
